That's a really lovely video, really enjoyed it - thanks for putting it together. I admit I was expecting a complete takedown of the poor old Sidewinder and instead you created a delightful love letter to it! I have an affinity for my Sidey (Juno) after taking on the Colonia Outlander Challenge with it on my Xbox account (22,000 LY in the unengineered starter ship - and yes the space madness got to me quite a few times). It gave me a real appreciation for this doughty little craft, and what a character it is. Mine is still sitting proudly at Colonia Dream, and though, unlike the Cobra, I'm highly unlikely to be using it again, it'll always have my respect, and a little place in my heart! Keep up the great work, looking forward to the next one. Would love to see the T9 and Python featured, two more ships with bags of character.
I'll second the Python as next ship. This is all adding some good backstory and ambience to the ships ED has still yet to mature properly and this kind of shizzle is helping.
Weirdly turned me off from the video with the initial loud static out of nowhere but this was an amazing experience. I (foolishly) ran to mining once someone told me about it and tossed out the sidewinder far too quickly. Nice to see Top Gear still exists in the 3300s. And I'm so glad to see so much love for the Sidewinder. I still have my Space Wasp, and it's probably the most fun of all my ships to fly
I have used the sidewinder on occasion because it's available everywhere, it's dirt-cheap to purchase and fit-out and is often a more efficient option as a commuter than shipping a module or ship to your location. Outside of using it as a cheap commuter car I don't touch it.
I may be late, but I got hooked on the game in a Sidewinder. When I was but a fledgling Pilot, a friend of mine was out mining, and I figured 'hey, I might as well join in with a pulse scanner and help her find some rocks.' At the time, I didn't know that doing so could spawn a pirate. Seeing as how it was my fault, I shot at that pirate in my Sidewinder to get his attention, expecting full well to get blown up. That is what got me hooked, and I had the perfect name for my Sidewinder: Little Acorn. Even now, she's a slippery little nut.

I recently got back into a Sidewinder, specifically for surface prospecting without an SRV, but I tricked it out just for fun. These things move at a good clip once they're engineered! I named mine the Lucky Pancake. Seemed like a good idea at the time.

When I recently unlocked (almost) all of the bubble engineers, I fully outfitted and engineered a Sidewinder. I took down an NPC wing of 2 with a Python and a Cobra (dangerous) with it. It's insane how unbalanced the game becomes with engineering.
I took my sidewinder, the Bella Ciao, all the way out to Hutton Orbital on a fuel scoop and an extra fuel tank. Came in on fumes, but I did it. 1.1 million credit courier mission. Probably wasn’t worth it, but it got me on my feet.
My original Sidewinder is called "Real Siddy". It is only slightly engineered, but it is totally A rated. I have a second one as well that is totally stock that I fly explicitly for it's cheap rebuy. In hindsight I should have bought a new sidewinder right away and upgraded that, keeping the original as a "free" rebuy.
I recently bought a sidewinder so i could play along with the FA-off tutorials who told me to get one. I thought i'd spend a few minutes in it to get used to this new method of flying and never touch it again. I never thought i'd start unironically enjoying flying it, and I certainly never thought i'd be able to kill an interceptor in one, less than a week after I picked it up. faulcon delacy had no right to make it as good as it is, but i'm certainly glad they did.
I can be proud to say, i still have my 2 starting ships, my og sidewinder and my Cobra mk III (the first ship i bought), and i gotta say, i love both of them.
The Sidewinder is a short-term ship with an even shorter hyperspace range. She'll make maybe 5 or 6 jumps without completely running out of fuel and even with a fuel scoop. With a fuel scoop, it takes forever to fill the fuel tank enough to make even 2 or 3 jumps. Unless you fit this ship with some serious engineering and the best modules, she isn't a long-range craft. When it comes to combat, she's got good maneuverability and fairly acceptable speed range. But the ship's shielding is less than ideal unless you're going up against craft that are about the same capabilities as the Sidewinder. And her pulse lasers aren't much against say an Asp or bigger ships with better shielding. At the most, one can carry up to 6 units of cargo, that is if you're willing to forego having a SuperCruise Assist. And unless ALL your modules are in the "D" range, the more cargo you carry, the shorter the jump distances are. All in all, there's a reason as to why she's basically a starter ship and nothing more.
My Sidewinders don't get names.. Just a Serial Number as I punch another one out of the Vending Machine for some inane purpose. Bookmarkwinder (Before actual Map Bookmarks were in game), Suicidewinder, Buckyballwinder, Canyonwinder.. ETC
Futurama is accompanying me back from Beagle Point a la Distant Worlds 2. But ... not in a Sidewinder. The next ship? Python. No, the Krait Mk2. Sigh. Once you have both, it’s like, do I want to take the Ferrari or the Lamborghini? Love the vids, eagerly waiting for the next one 😎
I totally sold mine when upgrading to a Cobra Mk III. Turned out that I actually didn't like the Cobra all that much so I switched back for a little while. I actually really love the Sidewinder. It's a ship I can fly in Open Play with no worries. :)
I love the eagle personally. The sidewinder is to the pilot as the eagle is to me. You can choose whether or not you upgraded, but you shouldn't feel bad about not having other's nostalgia.
My sidewinder doesn't have a name and I've spent entirely too much time in it. I used it to buy a Hauler and never looked back. I still have it (it's not worth selling) and it's fully upgraded, I take it out every once in a while but I never go far.
I just recently realised I could mail my sidey (Outrageous Fortune) half way accross the bubble for pennies, and since I engineered the hell out of it on a whim one day it's fast af on thrusters and jump range. So now I can leave my type 9 exactly where the powerplay is, order delivery, and be back in Cubeo in minutes instead of fighting the will of god not to crash big bessie into a star.
Really well done - welcome to the wonderful world of Elite UA-camrs! Great to see some love given to my all time favorite ship, the wonderful Sidewinder!

I took my sidewinder, the Bella Ciao, all the way out to Hutton Orbital on a fuel scoop and an extra fuel tank. Came in on fumes, but I did it.
1.1 million credit courier mission. Probably wasn’t worth it, but it got me on my feet.
I lost my first sidewinder by accidentally boosting while docking at the back of a station....oops
My 40ly shuttle "Pad Two Please." Transfers anywhere in the bubble for under 1500Cr.
Smart!
So the Sidewinder is the Key to open Raxxla or something?
Sidewinder is a great little beat when you remove the shields and bulk up on the hull protein
and slap two heat sinks onto it
I'll never forget how the friend I introduced to Elite described the Sidewinder as "the skid-mark of the galaxy".
3:30 one or two hits from those large guns and you are history.
i love the sidewinder,so much fun to fly.great video, o7
My favorite ship in the game. I have visited Explorers Anchorage and back more than once with it.
I can be proud to say, i still have my 2 starting ships, my og sidewinder and my Cobra mk III (the first ship i bought), and i gotta say, i love both of them.
I named my Sidewinder "Cardiac Arrest". About a week before I bought the game I had two heart attacks. Still have that ship.
Yessss, I love the reference to the top gear episode where they tested the ford fiesta
ETC
My Sidewinder's name is "Hot Rod Lincoln" (I name all my ships after songs). For those who've never heard the song, it's by Commander Cody.
So, which iteration of Benny are you up to now? You blew up a few during this video alone.
Love the Top Gear homage 😄
Great Video! Would like to see the Python next. Keep up the good work!
Got every ship in Elite except the Cutter but I still fly around with my Noobwinder in High Res and Conflict Zones. It's a fun carefree little ship.
0:300 and it comes with dual USB-C Thunderbolt 3 ports
I totally sold mine when upgrading to a Cobra Mk III. Turned out that I actually didn't like the Cobra all that much so I switched back for a little while. I actually really love the Sidewinder. It's a ship I can fly in Open Play with no worries. :)
Well, time to max engineering this bad boy for exploration, Beagle point, here we go!!
You mad man. Will you document this endeavour for us?
@@rwentfordable Surely it will be done, from engineering process. It will be first time documenting a trip, so I'm willing to learn on the go.
Federal Gunship would be an interesting counterpoint to your chieftain video.
Enjoyed the change in style.
Sadly right when I started the game i bought an eagle.
H-how the fuck do you even do that?
I love the eagle personally. The sidewinder is to the pilot as the eagle is to me. You can choose whether or not you upgraded, but you shouldn't feel bad about not having other's nostalgia.
My sidewinder doesn't have a name and I've spent entirely too much time in it. I used it to buy a Hauler and never looked back. I still have it (it's not worth selling) and it's fully upgraded, I take it out every once in a while but I never go far.
Holy shit the static at the start gave me a heart attack and nearly blew out my headphones!
