So as a Krait pilot, I've seen enough of the Chieftain, Challenger, and Crusader in conflict zones to develop a deal of respect for them. They're the few ships that I look to see if they're is any other targets. Why? They're a pain to kill. Their firepower doesn't bother me, I don't get hit often, but the problem is... neither do they. At least compared to the amount of hits they can take from me. It's enough for me to stop and go "is there maybe an Asp or Python nearby?".
As another Krait pilot I agree... The only thing that makes fighting this thing bearable is the fact that the drives are fairly easy to knock out... leaving the Chieftain drifting around helplessly while I can finally hit the damn thing without having to feel like I'm trying to compete in figure skating.
Even with an over engineered T10, a Chieftan is a pain in the ass to fight. I've had fights where I've won with only 30% of my hull left and a couple hardpoints to boot. Albiet, the fact that the shields are paper mache is true, but that can be said for any ship smaller than a T10 with a smaller shield generator and no shield cells.

At some point, the Alliance need to beg whoever at Lakon designed the C-series to build something in the Large size range, just so independent pilots can start flying around in something in the Cutter/Corvette size range without the feeling that you're morally compromising with two very dodgy governing authorities. Just imagine something that moves proportionately like a Chieftain and has a Huge weapons hardpoint.

Honestly, you shouldn't feel bad. While it's a viable AX vessel and easy to replace, Faulcon DeLacey accidentally created the meta for Anti-Thargoid combat with the Krait Mk II. So get in your Chieftain, get out there and make ships go splodey! Don't forget: Two MRPs will help tons with the canopy.
I've found that I need two MRPs on the Krait MkII as well. These lighter mid-class ships just seem to be very susceptible to module damage. I don't have a Python or Conda so I don't know if this problem scales up or disappears after the Krait. It never happend to me on smaller ships like the Vulture and Cobra, presumably because the modules are so hard to hit on a small profile. If I knew for sure it'd get rid of this module problem, I'd switch to the Conda in a second. But my experiences fighting Condas doesn't suggest it would, because I'm always able to snipe their modules really easily. Does module vulnerability just scale up with ship size?

Yeah, that line came out of nowhere. This video was the same kind of beautifully made look at the ship, not as polished as more recent ones maybe but that's to be expected with time and practice. That's what I expected to get with this video, any jokes or play on words in other videos were like "hail to the chief" at the end of this video. This hurt, and how out of place it felt only made it hurt more.
Pushed by this video I bought the Chieftain and pumped it up to its new worth of 89 million credits. And this babe is worth every bloody cent! Wherever I show up this ship sends a clear message to every other ship in the system: "Dont start a beef with the Chief!" So, thank you, The Pilot, for making pirates fear for their lifes. Thumbs up!!!
Love the videos, and love the Chieftain. But from 14k LY away from the bubble on my way to beagle point, my weaponless, shieldless, 45ly jump range chief disagrees that it can't be used for exploration. I fly 100% FA-OFF and I haven't found another ship that is more fun to fly than the Chief. All hail the Chief! Keep up the good work on these videos! o7
That is an interesting thing I've noticed about the Chieftain - it can jump. Not amazingly, but compared with the Vulture it doesn't have that "oof it's gonna take multiple jumps to get to the system I want to fight in" vibe. Heck, it even outstrips my Type-6 or Python when they're full of cargo. I guess Lakon have a lot of experience when it comes to making FSD housings...
Here's my thing. I avoided the chieftain and its sister ships for quite some time. When I finally upgraded from a Viper MkIV to a medium, I immediately went to the Krait MkII. 3 large, 2 small, fighter bay, and enough space to do everything well, with some practice. The alliance ships looked..... flimsy. From there, I bought a Mamba, because the FDL looked wrong. Do I regret my choices, no. Do I regret not trying it before several large, and then some more smalls? Yes. The chieftain and its sisters have become my main arsenal, from a pack hound boat, to a multicannon monster, and the chief, hailing all with its railgun call. I love these ships, probably more than the Krait, it's coffee maker and all. And that, I don't regret.
The Chieftain actually makes an outstanding shield tank if you build it carefully. My own build is: - 2 Large Thermal Vent Gimballed Beams - 3 Small Scramble Spectrum Gimballed Pulses - 1 Medium Advanced Missile Rack (for Odyssey FPS stuff) - 6A Clean Drag Drives - 6C Bi-Weave shield, reinforced with thermal resistance - 4 Utility Shield Boosters, 2 Heavy Duty Super Cap, 2 Thermal Resist - 3 Guardian Shield Reinforcements in the military compartments (these are the key to the build!) - Pre-engineered size 5 FSD (gives another 3ly on this ship vs. a regular 5A Long Range FSD) - A 5A fuel scoop, size 4 Guardian FSD booster, 2B AFMU, size 2 SRV bay, and DSS. This ship has 71 sustained DPS (not counting the dumbfire rockets) that drops heat as it fires, with over 2,100mj of effective shielding after resistances, and a 42ly jump range. It's my go-to combat explorer and unlike other ships I've tried - namely the Kraits - it doesn't have to sacrifice combat capability to also be a solid explorer. And yes, it is absolutely a shield tank, which it turns out is kinda genius. With over 1200mj of absolute shielding it is more than capable of surviving some extremely rough landings with the shield still online, and it has the agility and raw thruster power to make those landings extremely rare occurrences, even on 10g worlds. This, in turn, means you have no need for a cargo bay or limpet controller. You're never going to take hull damage anyway. And sure, you don't have any crazy-high burst damage, but you don't need it. The Chieftain's outstanding agility means you can indeed park it on the ass of anything you're shooting at and stay there. That means you don't have to build it for short burst damage windows of other similar ships. Instead, you build for sustained DPS and just keep firing until the target dies. As much as I desperately prefer the look of the Kraits or the multirole capabilities of the Python, the truth is the Chieftain is simply a better combat ship than either. That it turns out to be an above-average explorer is just icing on an already delicious cake.
you have no idea how much you made me want to start working on my thargoid chieftain again. just needs a prismatic shield and more engineering than you can shake a stick at...
Bought my Chieftain on the same day I bought my Crusader.... I have NO regrets.... Hours of Pirate killing, and Trolling fun... And I like it's defalt paint job. Called mine the "Murder Hobbo".... Keep up the awesome videos...
Thanks for posting these vids man as an upcoming E:D player looking at these reviews gave me an idea to what ship im getting and so far this ship stole my heart ❤️
I will say: This ship takes HUGE advantages out of keeping your throttle in the blue zone. boost-turning and jamming those vertical thrusters will help with the drifting. This thing laughs at inertia. Boost. FA-off. 180 turn. Boost. full speed the other direction nearly instantly. Frag Cannons. While the FAS is better for PvP and "advanced" PvE thanks to it's better armor, vertical. thrusters, harder-hitting weapons and insanely better module protection. I have used the chieftain for all kinds of bounty hunting and I love how well I can keep up big and even other medium ship's asses.
Back again - STILL entertained... After finally getting into AX combat (but with Crusader, coz i already had one...coz i like SLF tactics...and coz i wanted to _use_ SLF, against Thargoids and also a special AX-built Krait Mk2), i only just recently BOUGHT my very FIRST Chieftain! It's STILL sitting in one of my hangars, with factory paint-job gathering dust..... There's always 100 other things to be done in Elite!!!
I was 800 hours into Elite Dangerous when they released the Chieftain, immediately everything I was working on stopped, in order to buy and max out one of these. It's my favorite medium ship, the one I had been waiting for since I started playing in 2016.
The ship I used to get from deadly to Elite in combat , it can take on any ship in any elite environment, just put a small repair limpet and small cargo rack to be able to repair the canopy on the go. ..nice video
This may be my favorite video in the series. I feel the same way about the Chieftain but here The Pilot just puts it all in context and with a wit I don't have words for. Also, Chieftain is a joy to fly :D
I thought it had an itty-bitty living space too - but I just looked up the blue prints: the main body (without the engines) is about 50' X 200' X 60'. Let's say half of that space is unlivable i.e. cargo hull, weapons storage, maintenance passages etc. - that still leaves a 5,000sq ft house behind the pilot seat to call home. Too bad you'll never see it
This was the First proper combat ship I wanted in this game. I now love all of my Chieftains. I'm about to put together an AX one with two large shard cannons and two gaurdian gauss cannons.
I'm new to combat in Elite Dangerous, could the Chieftain potentially take on larger targets such as the Federal Corvette, Cutter, Fer-de-Lance or Anaconda? Like in player vs player situation?
everytime i see one of your videos i just wanna buy the ship and spend hours and hours flying it holy shit dude they should be paying you for this stuff you're literally making people fall in love with this game like goddamn these are amazing
this convinced me to save for and buy one of these as a new player , haven't looked back since I started flying it and have invested plus 60 mil. combat in this thing is beyond fun. the shields are next to useless, canopy blows out fairly regularly it overheats like there is no tomorrow but its seriously worth it. ain't noting short of a tactical nuke gonna get past the hull points, it turns/reverse trusts and rolls like nobodies business and the firepower can chew through pretty much anything, thins beauty can punch well above its weight.
Honetly i bought this randomly while playing with a friend hunting pirites and I fell in love with it as soon as I had my first fight in this ship I still haven't died once using this ship
Still can't believe the Alliance-the redheaded stepchild of the superpowers-stepped up and not only designed a ship for AX combat, but one that does it well! Seriously, I got one of these yesterday and took it out to the Pleiades sector to kill some Thargoids. It was a joy to fly and was able to stand up to multiple Scouts. Now to take on the big death flowers... I'm sure this can handle it.
The Chieftain is an amazing armed trader! Cargo space could be bigger, but I’ve never felt more confident being interdicted in any other ship of its price range. Sure I could carry more cargo, but I can easily make up the difference with the bounties on the heads of the pirates that come for my booty!
I LOVED this ship as a new E:D player. Outside of its looks, I picked it as my primary ship until I had the credits to graduate to my beloved Anaconda because it kept me safe in combat while giving me enough jump range to be somewhat useful as a mid range explorer. Then I decided to "graduate" myself to the Crusader. And then I almost didn't even bother with moving on to the Big Three. I'll yell you what...there's nothing scarier (or sexier) than a Chieftain coming in for the kill unless it's that same ship coming for the kill with a fighter being birthed from its launch bay!
@@ThePilot_ I knew why, I just wanted to express my enjoyment of it lol. I heard it on Cody's lab ages ago and tracked it down from there. I've heard it in atleast 10 other videos since lol
I like how according to lore the Alliance is the only faction that has a standing peace treaty with the Thargoids but they're also the only ones capable of fighting them competently.
All hail the chief!.... Mine is hull tanked with biweaves G5 engineered for thermal resistance just to protect me during the initial closing phase of the fight and while maneouvering into my target's 6 o'clock. My chef's staple diet consists mainly of elite anacondas, cutters, and vettes.

Fell in love with the Chieftain the first time I saw it. Bought it. Never looked back. Spend 150 hours the past week in it. Love it.
Keep up the good work on these videos! o7
Colby Johnstone exactly. I wanna make an explorer out of this thing.
Getting that Top gear vibe
I love those guys lol
I want that! I love watching your videos. Couldn’t help but to chuckle at the quote from genie in Aladdin. You do good work, keep it up friend!
I've purchased a Chieftain for AX combat. Been engineering it and equipping it. I'll be ready to start exploring that content soon.
The Chieftain actually makes an outstanding shield tank if you build it carefully. My own build is:
- 2 Large Thermal Vent Gimballed Beams
- 3 Small Scramble Spectrum Gimballed Pulses
- 1 Medium Advanced Missile Rack (for Odyssey FPS stuff)
- 6A Clean Drag Drives
- 6C Bi-Weave shield, reinforced with thermal resistance
- 4 Utility Shield Boosters, 2 Heavy Duty Super Cap, 2 Thermal Resist
- 3 Guardian Shield Reinforcements in the military compartments (these are the key to the build!)
- Pre-engineered size 5 FSD (gives another 3ly on this ship vs. a regular 5A Long Range FSD)
- A 5A fuel scoop, size 4 Guardian FSD booster, 2B AFMU, size 2 SRV bay, and DSS.
Love your videos man, Short sweet... Positive and informative! And entertaining! Keep them coming!
Love your style, please keep the reviews coming. I bought my Chieftain based on this review and LOVE IT, thanks!
you have no idea how much you made me want to start working on my thargoid chieftain again. just needs a prismatic shield and more engineering than you can shake a stick at...
mate... I subscribed because I love the way you review the ships. Please keep going and review them ALL !
That's the plan. Thanks, man!
@@ThePilot_ is this good for exploration because I need a cheap exploration ship with a fighter hangar
Bought my Chieftain on the same day I bought my Crusader.... I have NO regrets.... Hours of Pirate killing, and Trolling fun... And I like it's defalt paint job. Called mine the "Murder Hobbo".... Keep up the awesome videos...
5:24 I keep rewinding to this bit for a good chukkle lol
I bought it today because of this video and i CAN NOT put my controller down now. Its a drifting gunship!! I love it!
Thanks for posting these vids man as an upcoming E:D player looking at these reviews gave me an idea to what ship im getting and so far this ship stole my heart ❤️
GG on that Robin Williams Genie reference!
I will say:
This ship takes HUGE advantages out of keeping your throttle in the blue zone.
boost-turning and jamming those vertical thrusters will help with the drifting.
3 Weeks as a Rookie, went from Sidewander to Diamond X, than Asp X and today, right now - THE CHIEFTAINNN, YESSSSSS
It would be cool if it’s thrusters would point towards the ground when it landed
I believe a fully engineered Vulture can offer a few surprises sir.
Thanks for another great video, well suited for this amazing ship. Hail the Chief! 🤜🏻🤛🏻
I recently got my hands on a Chieftain and I’ve fallen in love with combat now, it’s just so much fun in this ship.
The Natalie dormer quote gets me everytime
I was 800 hours into Elite Dangerous when they released the Chieftain, immediately everything I was working on stopped, in order to buy and max out one of these. It's my favorite medium ship, the one I had been waiting for since I started playing in 2016.
This is my favourite ship to fly. It just handles perfectly.
Excellent videos you're doing here.
Finally! Great Elite Dangerous vids!!! Thank you sir!!! Liked and Subscribed!!!!
You deserve a lot more subscribers than you have. Also I never comment on videos but you deserve some praise awesome videos dude
I Think that the Chief is the best looking Ship in the game.
Better than even the imperial ships im terms of looks.
The ship I used to get from deadly to Elite in combat , it can take on any ship in any elite environment, just put a small repair limpet and small cargo rack to be able to repair the canopy on the go. ..nice video
I love my Chieftain. I've named it Dr. Giggles.
It's a lazer and cannon build that is just too much fun.
I'm about to put together an AX one with two large shard cannons and two gaurdian gauss cannons.
wow first time i have heard the "codys lab" music outside of his videos. cool video new to the game loving all the different ship reviews
Holy shit I kenw id heard that before wtf, wonder if he's still making videos, wonder how the bees are going, I'ma check that out
I Love the Alladin reverence XD nice one. Good old gheeny
Lately I've been thinking of going back and engieneiring my Vulture, but I think I'm gonna have a look at a Cheiftain now.
I'm new to combat in Elite Dangerous, could the Chieftain potentially take on larger targets such as the Federal Corvette, Cutter, Fer-de-Lance or Anaconda? Like in player vs player situation?
Yes
everytime i see one of your videos i just wanna buy the ship and spend hours and hours flying it holy shit dude they should be paying you for this stuff you're literally making people fall in love with this game like goddamn these are amazing
this convinced me to save for and buy one of these as a new player , haven't looked back since I started flying it and have invested plus 60 mil. combat in this thing is beyond fun. the shields are next to useless, canopy blows out fairly regularly it overheats like there is no tomorrow but its seriously worth it. ain't noting short of a tactical nuke gonna get past the hull points, it turns/reverse trusts and rolls like nobodies business and the firepower can chew through pretty much anything, thins beauty can punch well above its weight.
The way it screams when you boost. Saying it was designed for Anti-AX is an understatement.
Well hell. News room riot lol. I love how often this song gets placed in various YT videos lol
Part of UA-cam's free music library. That's why.
@@ThePilot_ I knew why, I just wanted to express my enjoyment of it lol. I heard it on Cody's lab ages ago and tracked it down from there. I've heard it in atleast 10 other videos since lol
Yup. You've got a new subscriber here!!
Thanks, man! Hope you like what's coming up.
Wow! So inspiring! Do you have a video explaining your build on chieftain?
Okay hear me out, lakon makes another combat ship based on both the chieften and dbx, and call it the diamond bace ace
I love overstatement, melodrama, stuff like that.
Then G5 efficient small beams and med + large PAs devastate pretty much anything. Ironically, the bigger the enemy ship the easier they are to kill. My chef's staple diet consists mainly of elite anacondas, cutters, and vettes.
Avenger? Cute name. Mine's Running With Scissors! 😁
I love my chief. The other ship in this class that I love, you didn’t mention. The clipper. Same price range, same agility or better and much better shields.
I enjoyed my tenure with this ship, and I quickly moved to the Challenger which is like a second helping.
I absolutely love the Chieftain. It's my PvP ship, but I do very little of that stuff so I sometimes take it to melt some AI ships. The power! Also a bit non-meta build so I do use some shield reinforcements, not that many though.
Like the tank it's named after, it gets the job done and is pretty reliable because it's cheap and well armoured
