- PART 28 of this New Series. In this episode I look at the rear height control valve and more importantly the front green spheres. This car does NOT retain any braking pressure so if it stalls going down a hill or at speed on a motorway the car will NOT stop. Let's try and fix that.
My biggest challenge yet! Can I FIX a 1988 Rolls Royce Silver Spirit with too many faults to list, there is more wrong with it than right. Will I end up crying into my Connolly leather seats or will this beast live on.
This is the cheapest Rolls Royce in the UK so I wasn't expecting much, hopefully bit by bit with sheer determination and zero skill I will attempt to fix each fault one by one.
This is PART 28 of this series. Every part will be filmed, and I hope to discover the craftmanship that has gone into this 34 year old moving piece of art.

Definitely go for the white walls. They’ll cheer up the look of the car a lot. You have to clean them fairly regularly but it’s worth it. Keep going - you’re helping to remove the ‘mechanical mystique’ of these cars no end.
Cleaning white walls is easy - you just use Ajax powder.
An amazing amount of work completed on a driveway. I watch a lot of amateur car repair/classic car channels and you have achieved more than most of them could without involving a garage. You should try linking up with someone on the other channels or attending some events once it is fully on the road as the cross over of subscribers might boost yours and their channels
Great series of videos I must say. Been following it over the weeks and having recently bought a 2000 Bentley Arnage with the 6.75 Rolls Royce Engine in it I'm starting to tackle some minor jobs by myself after gaining some slight confidence after watching your videos. You make these older cars just that little bit less scary!
Vince, treat yourself to some brake cleaner, it's the best way to clean off oil and dirt and stop it getting into where it shouldn't go. You could say it's the automotive equivalent of IPA. 😁

I was going to say the same thing!
But you have to be careful where you spray it as it will remove oil and grease from places you don't want and they will quickly rust. Such as a bicycle chain for instance.
It's always a joy to see your excitement at a job well done, especially on this Silver Spirit, because there are so many complicated issues with it. I've thoroughly enjoyed all of your videos, though, and I'll keep coming back, "thriving" or not. Your channel is gold!
I remember manually operating the height control valves to bleed the systems and free them off during a major service on these. Worth doing.

Personally I think your views are capped because of the things you are fixing. I think retro style old stuff isn't interesting to a young audience.
To be honest most of the retro style devices got thrown in the bin a long time ago. I not sure it's actually popular despite people claiming retro is in.
Then again, what do I know? Not much, other than my very limited experience with not many people.
Fixing devices that are popular may get lots more views. Things that are super popular seem to be a nightmare to fix and expensive.
@@pow9606 I really don't enjoy the fixes of the 70s/80s crappy plastic ebay stuff, although I watch it. The RR-fixes on the other hand are great, I don't know much about cars and this way I can learn along with the videos.
UA-cam has gone down hill VERY quickly in the past couple of years. The interesting chaps that provide content that I like to watch are being slowly eradicated from the front page. Manufactured 'viral' garbage content is being pushed as well as the ticktok style shorts. Susan has made a mockery of this site. Now we just get sponsored content from chinese manufacturers flooding hungry youtubers with garbage merch to hawk.
@@Markus-fw4px Everyone has their particular preferences - personally I like the 70s/80's plastic toy fixes as they were ones I had as a child. I still have a couple of ones that Vince and BuyitFixIt have covered - brings back good memories.

Just finished work and started watching this great video,but can I just say I would of moved that big air intake pipe thingy! Lol
Vince, just a suggestion if you haven't done this already, you should let the car start and run and get nice and warm for a bit (at least a half hour or so). You've done quite a bit of work and starting and stopping the engine. When you run it for short periods, it doesn't get hot enough to burn off any condensation that may build up in the engine causing water to sneak into the oil. You probably aren't doing enough to cause any kind of damage, but with all the work you are doing, better safe than sorry.
I'm really enjoying this series, and as an owner of an SZ it's really interesting to see how all these systems work. I was inspired by one of your earlier videos to have a go fixing my stuck aerial but it was a bit too stuck, fortunately it still works other than not going the full range, but even the garage I took it to couldn't loosen it. Looking forward to the next one, you're right about the brakes taking priority in the hydraulic system so hopefully your self-levelling at the rear will work now.
Another superb episode, just for a second I though the invincible Vince was beaten, but you came through adversity again.
Really enjoyed watching this one. You've made so much progress over the series and can't wait until the next one.

@@Mymatevince not the easiest things to work on, vehicles that is. Mechanical work is often the most labor intensive and often painful on the hands, back, ect. Hat's off to you Vince.
I've been away too long! I come back recently after realizing it's been a year or more without notificatiins of your new content, that UA-cam changed for whatever reason, and find my overseas cousin is a car guy!!!
I mean, I'm not 'shocked',, because you can do anything but as an old phart gearhead myself I'm pleasantly surprised. :)
One bit of advice I learned, thankfully not the hard way, don't wear a watch, rings, bracelets, or anything with sleeves. You're super vigilant and careful so I know you won't reach around at things on a running engine, but it's just good practice not to give anything the opportunity to grab onto you.
Great vid. Sorry to hear the UA-cam gig isn't thriving. You really need to think about including a sponsor in your vids. I don't think there's a UA-camr left who doesn't do sponsored content. Lets face it, if you're doing this full time, you need to provide for your family, and sponsored content might just fill that gap. You're nearing 1 million subs, its really insane you're not taking advantage of that to provide the extra income you need.

That hydraulic fluid shooting out reminded me of the time I took a valve out of a tyre with puncture proof liquid inside it and the green liquid shot out and went all over me, I looked like the Hulk 😂 good video 👍

Amazing job, Vince! I certainly admire your tenacity, bud! You certainly put your mind to it and make it happen! I have a 1990 SAAB 900 SPG and it uses the "bomb" pressure braking system, but there is only ONE of them you have to change if it fails AND it's very easy to get to and no where are large as those!! I don't have NEAR 59 pumps before the light comes on! Cheers!

I would go whitewall all the way. Like you said you’ll only ever have one Rolls Royce. Also save up and get a professional paint job, the car deserves it. I'd highly recommend the "La suspension hydropneumatique Citroën" series uploaded by Motor videos S on youtube. Don't worry, the videos are all in English as they were made by Citroën UK. They are fairly accessible videos that explain the hydropneumatic system very well. I'm not sure how much was just copy pasted by Rolls Royce from Citroën, but the pressure regulator you unmounted here definitely looks identical.
As for the spheres: it definitely seems like the membrane had split on the lower one. Upper one may have been okay though it's likely just as old as the other one ;)
Great video! I had a similar issue with the tire situation on my 91 Jaguar XJ40 Sovereign. This size of tire a bit harder to find and most of those available are pickup truck tires, for 90s and early 2000s Toyota Tacoma. They will do the job, but they aren't as comfortable as true car tires would be. I recommend keeping the front tires for a little while at first, so that you can confirm if the alignment is right, before ruining 2 new tires. Ask me how I know :)
I'm not sure if an exact date has been mentioned on the channel but I think the tyres are ancient so I definitely wouldn't feel comfortable driving on them. Might be worth having the alignment checked instead. On the other hand if the existing tyres aren't worn too unevenly, that should tell that the alignment is OK.
My dad recently complained about his 90s van being a lot less stable in wet conditions as it used to be. Had a look and the rear tyres are from 2010 (on a RWD van). Should explain the issues!

@24:26 - I went through something similar with having to reach down and bruise my chest trying to reach a part on a car. One day, i was under the car replacing a flex pipe when I noticed that the 'thing' I was trying to remove was right in my face and would have taken a fraction of the time to remove had I slid under the car to survey the situation.
A little tip for you if I may....at 33:54 in order to avoid the risk of damaging a thread, marry both faces lightly and turn anti clockwise until you feel or hear a "click". This indicates that female and male threads are facing properly. Now turn clockwise to tighten with confidence. Like this you avoid burring the thread absolutely.
Another idea::- to ensure a better grip on a sphere using a tool designed to unscrew filters, why not paint a stripe of epoxy around the equator of it. When this is hardened the unscrewing tool will have a better grip on it eliminating the need to use a Dremel to cut out a notch and then a mallet and chisel to loosen / tighten it. Any epoxy, Araldite two part glue is ideal;.

3) I'm simply not able to understand, why there is no big hex nut on those green spheres. With such, the effort to get the spheres off, could be minimised a lot.

Nice steps forward in fixing this car :) Certainly was surprise when that oil splashed everywhere with pretty high looking pressure!
Had a laptop keyboard problem myself, the T key stopped working. Opened the keycap but the structure looks weird, nothing like for example Playstation controller buttons. Solution was to buy external usb keyboard :D

Great job Vince. I have a quesion if you will. I have a Bentley turbo r with the same sphere ssteme as the Rolls Royce silver spirit. On mine as soon as I start the car I have the alert Low brake pressure. I have it although I put more mineral oil in the two reservoir. Once as soon as I start the engine when I pushed the brake pedal, the oil spilt on the floor orn the front passenger side. Woud please lead me in a possible solution. Please keep doing the great job you've done till now.

No rust! I'm from the Rust Belt in Wisconsin, USA. A car of that age would weigh 1/3 less here...the rest of it would be shed on the roads everywhere the car traveled. 🤣

Vince, can't remember if you said the age of the tyres, but all tires should be under 10 years old that includes the spare wheel as far as I am aware, because even though the spare isn't in use, there is a high chance the wheel will be used at some point in the cars life, like to get you off the motorway which is when an old tire will explode if it is going to. so you should make sure the age of the wheel you are keeping is good for a couple of MOT's.
Vince...look up andfamiliarilise yourself with high pressure injection injuries. Just something to be aware of when working on hydraulic systems. I did wince when you undid that high pressure line! Consequences can be devastating and injuries dont appear as bad as they actually are in the first instance.
take the air intake hose off next time. just a jubilee clip hold it on and you would have more space.

that looked like the accumulator to me and the 13 mm bolt will release the pressure to work on the system and btw it dose not need bleeding as the return system will take out any problems

When working on hard brake lines you really should use a flare nut wrench, it gets more sides of the nut and helps you avoid stripping or rounding of the edges
You might be able to get those spheres off with a 3 foot pipe wrench too but that notch has worked well at least twice now for you.
Getting that last sphere off reminds me of a German made MZ 125cc motorcycle I bought in my younger years, a crazy ignition key design along with a really stupid rotor removal specialized tool I had to buy. Funny thing with the key was if you saw another same model you have a high probability of riding it away.

25:10 We have the exact same Screwdriver. It is so versatile. Screwing, hammering, levering, stethoscope. Works just for everything.
I think there is a special tool for the spheres (sphere removal tool by Citroen). I dont know the details but it can work better from chained oil filter wrench(s). you have been breaking a lot of them lately 👀
Pleiades ( if I’ve spelt it correctly) sell one. It derives from a mole wrench and can deal with anything. I used it on my D model Citroëns. Spheres like oil filters are recommended hand tightened only but no one seems to quite believe it!
That height corrector on Vince’s Spirit is identical to a Citroën DS going back to the ‘50’s. I know having owned both cars.
I have heard that people here in Australia just use an oil filter removal tool and treat them the same way as an OF when installing.

Only one thing all the old Rolls engineers will shout mild expletives at, 'The Rattle Can Finish'. I'd imagine in every other area they would be 100% supportive and happy.
Find someone when it's all done who will do it nicely. You can do all the prep and finishing but super quality paint on a Rolls is essential.

Vince, these spheres come preloaded with pressurised Gas! (Non combustible, but nonetheless somewhat dangerous) so be careful when making grooves in the hull!
