  • David Howard takes us through the testing of the hydraulic system warning lights and the rectification of a faulty pressure switch. The actual example worked on is a Silver Shadow but the system architecture and switches are common to all the main derivative R-R and Bentley

If you press the check button on top of the steering column (engine running) on a Shadow one (later dashboard), just the "Coolant" light ignites and you hear the warning buzzer. Anway, I utterly enjoyed your video! Excellent work.

This pumping test is only valid if your pressure switches are NOT sticking and thereby slow to respond to low pressure which is common after many years. Switches are easy to overhaul. Ream out the nickel sized brass plate a tiny bit so the fiber plug slides freely and reassemble the switch. Now you will have a valid brake reserve test by pumping pedal. Very important to have at least 10 pumps reserve in both hydraulic systems to drive this Shadow 2 safely as there IS NO BRAKE MASTER CYLINDER after 1975.

If you select any gear other than park or neutral, then turn the key to start your warning lights will illuminate without the engine turning over. Check all bulbs working.

System 1 pressure seems good but system 2 does not appear to be holding quite so well. It's possible that there's an internal leak in system 2, maybe at the height control valves but a test using a hydraulic pressure gauge and blanking plugs on various components in sequence would pinpoint where the pressure loss is occurring. 40 pedal pumps before the pressure warning light illuminates is OK but not perfect.
