Maybe my gym just has a different style but it was taught to take a step in the opposite direction of the incoming hook while falling onto that foot instead of your step with the foot closer to the hook and falling on the opposite foot
There are different ways of going about it. Sometimes when you are in action, you don't have time to take any steps. This is just a basic understanding of the movement. ;-) keep moving
