  • Stick around until the end of the video for an exciting announcement!!
    Intimidated by watercolor? Afraid you can’t control it? Worried that watercolor isn’t a forgiving medium? Don’t let watercolor stress you out!! Come hang out with me for an hour or so while I paint four little landscapes and show you how to use watercolor in a way that’s actually relaxing! No particular tools, materials, brands, or anything else is required. Use whatever you have, even if that’s just watered down acrylic paint. Today is just about feeling, relaxing, and enjoying your time.
    Mr Jane and I started a new art and story blog!! Check it out here!

    Check out the affiliate links page on my website for a full list of materials I use and recommend. If you make a purchase through those links, I may get a little bit of a commission which helps me continue to provide free painting tutorials for you. Yay! bit.ly/2C8lK8I
    Materials:
    • Whatever brand or colors of watercolor you have. Seriously. Yes, even dollar store kids’ watercolors will do. I've used a combination of Daniel Smith watercolors, Winsor & Newton, Dr. Ph. Martin's Hydrus, and FineTec pearlescent watercolors.
    • Whatever brushes you have. I’m using the same brushes I use for my acrylic paintings.
    • Some kind of a palette knife. Totally optional. I do recommend a plastic one if you’re not used to this technique.
    • Whatever brand/quality of paper you have or like. I do recommend at least 140lb paper because it’s easier to work with and doesn’t buckle as much, but as long as you’re just in it for the enjoyment and experience, use absolutely whatever paper you have.
    • A Can-Do attitude! Fear is not welcome to hang out with you today. It’s just paper and water. What’s to be afraid of? I’m even going to show you paintings I did that didn’t turn out. I’m not afraid :D

    Love your paintings. I fall asleep listening to your voice. Wake up, find the last thing I remember and repeat....🤣 I get to see it all, which is all that matters. Maybe I should watch in the morning. Love watercolor, but put to much pressure on myself. This video really helped.

    I ordered Frank Clarke's beginner paint/brush set yesterday after watching a few of his videos. I've only watched part of this video so far. I'm intrigued. I love your ideas for getting to know the paints and how they flow, blend, etc. I will be trying out these methods once my supplies arrive. I might have to invest in a tube of lunar black.

    Many thanks, Jane! I used hot pressed paper for the first one and it looks like an atomic cloud, awful really! The other 3 I used regular cold press paper and I quite like them a lot...even my husband gives them a 'thumbs up'! I think I might do them again at some point.

    I like to work a bit like you do with my watercolors, allowing the paint to determine what direction I go. I'm sure you are probably already aware of him, but if not, you would appreciate The Mind of Watercolor here on UA-cam. Enjoyed watching you work and I may try using a palette knife myself :) Oh and if you don't already have it, I think you would really enjoy Daniel Smith's Green Apatite Genuine. It's an amazing color.

    Jane I love this! Your tutorials make me so happy. I’m curious about your watercolors and the texture of each color. It looks almost liquid or gel-like, and every other watercolor set I’ve seen is dry and flat. Is there much of a difference?

    • @PaintingwithJane
      @PaintingwithJane  4 роки тому

      Thank you so much, Sally! You mean when they're in my palette? I buy them in the tube and then just squeeze them into the palette. Some of them have a very firm texture so you see the bumps and shape from the tube. Some are more liquid when they come out of the tube so they look flatter. That's all 😊

    I enjoyed your video and your painting, here comes the but, stop with the black and paynes grey please, the one pic looks like a graveyard and that tree at one point looked nice but ended up looking like Ravens are sitting in it. It is SPRING and is just me but don't like closed in dark gloomy pictures with tall trees scratched in. Sorry you are a great artist and I am looking forward to you overcoming black and paynes grey... paintings with colors in them, it does look like you really are enjoying the watercolors and I do like them as well, Looking forward to seeing more. My passion is watercolor, but I do acrylics too. I have to say that I've never seen watercolors done with the techniques you use! lol I rarely see a palette knife used with watercolors, but I have to say that your paintings in this video are really nice. Don't you love D/S paints? They granulate beautifully. You had said that you're using 140# w/c paper. I'm wondering if you're using 100% cotton paper. I ask because I'm wondering if the knife worked out with 100% cotton paper. Also, are you enjoying using acrylic brushes - vs- synthetic blend w/c brushes or 100% sable, or squirrel brushes for w/c? After using both, I prefer a synthetic blend (black silver brand) brushes for w/c. I'm curious as to what your opinion on brushes with w/c is. Nice, moody, paintings - as always! Hope to see more of your w/c work . Oh - try the d/s "mayan blue", "undersea green", and "moonglow" - I have a feeling you'll love them
