Hoyt Carbon RX3 Ultra Vs. Mathews Traverse Bow Battle

  • What do you look for when buying a new bow? We thought we would do some head to head battles with some of the new bows on the market for 2019 and test them against one another. The first matchup pits the Hoyt Carbon RX3 Ultra against the Mathews Travers. We'll test each on draw cycle, valley, back wall, hand shock, quietness, and speed to find out which one we think is the winner. The tests are done based on our opinion only.

    Loved this review. When I bought my traverse, the shop tried desperately to get me to buy an RX3, but in my opinion there was no comparison. Traverse was so smooth and quiet with solid back wall and no vibration at all in the hand. Just felt like an extension of my arm. I couldn’t be happier. Your review is spot on. Great review. Did not like the banjo string sound at the end of the draw cycle on the Matthews. It did look a bit more notchy on the draw cycle in the frontal view. The Hoyt seems like it's a bit louder but imo they've always seemed just a little louder than most top of the line bows. Even in the carbon configuration they just seem loud.
    I wouldn't pay the price that any bow manufacturer is asking for their top of the line flagship bow. Me personally I usually wait until they've been on the market a year or two then buy some other fanboys throw away for the latest and greatest gimmick and save a ton of money.

      Sammy Hughes thank you. Both are great bows along with a few others I’ve shot this year. It really comes down to a person shooting all the bows within their budget before making a decision. The bows are really getting that close and the details are minor that separate each one. Appreciate the comment.

    Thank you for a great video. I love the fact you are shooting real world hunting set ups, showing real world speed and not trying for the trumped up speeds that the companies claim. All this speed talk and who's bow is fastest needs to stop. To many guys buy a bow based on its speed and not how it shoots. When I started in the early 80's, speed was never really given on a bow. I shot Hoyt bows for 20 years and have switched back to Mathews and love my Triax. Keep up with the videos.

    Great job on this comparison! In my opinion Mathews and Hoyt are the top two bow manufacturers out there. I really feel you couldn’t go wrong with either one of these bows. Maybe the Helix ultra would have been a better choice because that one is aluminium and way more similiar to the mathews, and i would love to see these bows going at the max so 80 pounds 32 inch draw :). but eh

    • @chompo9135
      @chompo9135 5 років тому

      I compared the Hoyt Helix Ultra to the Mathews Traverse yesterday in my local archery shop. I was amazed with the Traverse. The draw cycles are very similar, almost identical on these bows. All the weight is up front, it levels out then tapers off into your valley and the back walls are both very good. The grip on the new Mathews bows is terrific. I didn't like the grip Hoyt as much and the vibration felt after the shot was WAY more than the Traverse. They both shot well, but we also put them both through the chrono and the Mathews was around 5 FPS faster at my 30" draw on both bows set at 70 lbs. I love the ability to customize the Mathews so heavily with their online bow customizer. The Mathews held better on target, felt better in hand, vibrated less and costed less. I am in no way a Mathews fanboy but this Traverse is extremely underrated when the Vertix is getting all the attention and marketing. If you are someone with a longer draw length or just like a longer axle to axle bow, try the Traverse, you'll have a hard time not throwing your money at them.

  • @bertcard698
    @bertcard698 5 років тому +2

    Well I am glad I shoot a Prime but I just went and shot a tuned with a whisker Biscuit at 29 inch DL 70 lbs on the nose Hoyt RX 3 2.1 Cam now the 1st arrow 453 grains and a 442 grain arrow both were surprisingly faster then said in video the RX Ultra shot the 453 grain arrow an average of 279 fps the average for the 442 grain arrow is 285 fps. Now for those that are going to shoot the number 3 Cam it was an average of 10 fps slower so the 3 Cam disappointed us at the local shop as where the number 2 Cam shot smooth and the grip was good as well as the draw but for me a 442 or a 453 grain arrow out of a bow in this configuration will get the job done as for vibration just a hint nothing that would cause any issues down the road or on the line or in the field Hoyt made a good bow here as far as the draw and shot on this bow remember shoot a bow towards its max dL and you will get more speed

  • @LouStoriale

    How to make this better: All bows set at same poundage. Get actual decible readings. Get Actual FPS. Edit tighter. Shoot groups at 30/40 meters. Which one shoots best for you. Watch Paul Harrel videos on shooting guns, etc. Always excellent.

    • @ElkCallingAcademy
      @ElkCallingAcademy  5 років тому

      L. S. Thank you watching and commenting. The bows were set to same poundage and verified with the same scale. I agree about the decimal meter and have that in place for the videos we have coming next. I could do a camera angle of the target instead of the second camera angle I did in this video. Appreciate the input.

      Awesome! I shoot at a place called G4 Archery in Hillsboro Oregon. It's a custom shop where I get the good fortune of shooting allot of different bows. They sell Botech's like popcorn, can't keep the carbon fiber in stock.

    Neither one of these are probably on my list, but curious when picking a winner and giving attributes why no mention of physical weight in the deciding factor? I am just curious since you have to pack them all day on a hunt. When hiking 12-15 miles a day over a half pound makes a difference. Thank you for the review!

    • @ElkCallingAcademy
      @ElkCallingAcademy  5 років тому

      Brandon Howren thank you for watching. I did forget to mention the weight when doing the final scene and that is my error. But, I do prefer a bow that has a little more weight to it as for me it hold steadier, especially in the wind. Loads of people will start with a light bow and then add weight to the stabilizer to get the bow to hold better. Why not just start with a bow that already has that little extra weight and not add said weight to the stabilizer. I appreciate you commenting and I will be sure to address the weight bow in the head to head reviews we have coming up.

      If you really want to shed 0.6 lbs then the Hoyt makes sense. I had similar conclusions last year between the halon 32 and RX-1. I couldn’t justify a higher priced bow that was inferior so I got the halon 32.
      That said I was bummed the triax technology wasn’t on a longer bow. It was crazy dead in the hand. So this year.... I am purchasing a traverse. Wasn’t planning on another bow purchase this quickly but the traverse was the bow I wish I could have purchased last year. That’s how impressive these new Mathews bows are.

    @leelathrop9539 5 років тому +1

    Few things. First on the speed test. It's fairly well known Mathews runs 1/2 inch or more long on draw lengths so that's about 5fps there. Also was the Hoyt a number 2 cam or number 3? I would think a number 2 cam at 29 inches would be right in that 275-280fps range. Also I think it woulda of been a lot better comparison if it was the Helix ultra and the traverse. On tunabilty the Hoyt is easier to tune than the Mathews. Much easier to twist cables than to shim cams. I do think the Mathews is a nice bow. But they are top heavy and just don't fit me. The Hoyt is much lighter an balances better for me.

    • @ElkCallingAcademy
      @ElkCallingAcademy  5 років тому

      Lee Lathrop thank you for watching and commenting with your preferences. I prefer a little heavier bow and that played into my decision. Both are great bows and honesty people need to shoot both before deciding one way or another. I’ve heard several time that it should have been the Helix instead on the matchup but everyone continues to miss that I was asked by followers and subscribers to match these two up. Specs are very close with weight and price being the two areas that have the largest separation between the two. We all have the right to our opinions as well as features we like in a bow. The separation between ALL Bow companies have narrowed dramatically and there are a lot of great bows out on the market today.

    • @Kyle-mx6hh
      @Kyle-mx6hh 5 років тому +1

      The point Lee lathrop is making is that your bow review was inaccurate. First of all the cams on the Hoyt should have been the #2 cams and that would add about 10-15 FPS for your speed test and secondly you should have had the Hoyt drawing 29.5 adding an additional 5 FPS to your speed test....all this being said you are now being asked to make a more accurate video between the helix ultra and the teaverse. The Hoyt carbon bows are a joke and not even a real close comparison. For the best comparison between these bows you would go with the helix ultra. I would bet you would have a different conclusion if you did.

      Gritty Grizzly I appreciate the comment but again the point is being missed that I was asked to compare this specific matchup. I also trust the tech that sets up all the bows to make sure that everything is set up as close to identical as possible. Yes the Mathews was an 1/8” long. And yes, I have been asked to do the Helix Ultra vs Traverse matchup. We are also talking about personal preference in what each of us like in a bow and I can tell that you really a fan of Hoyt and there nothing wrong with that as we all have different likes and things that we look for in a bow. I will get the Helix Ultra vs Traverse video done as soon as I can.

      I have no bias between the Mathews or the Hoyt. I want to get a longer ata bow and the two best options in my opinion are the helix ultra or traverse. I just want to see an accurate review that isn’t focused on the carbon craze that so many people have bought into. The carbon bows are being sold as a premium bow when they are actually inferior to their aluminum counterparts(this is an example of personal preference).

    I hate that there are so many reviews of the RX3 Ultra in the number 3 cam and not the 2! You have to use the 2 cam when testing 30 inches and under in draw length. In this video, you can clearly see that the cam isn't being fully utilised. Inside out precision has a much better video. Reviewers should stop putting misleading information out there.

      I do like your videos, and I've watched all your bow review videos and plan to watch more in the future. I do agree the traverse is an all around better bow. That being said I still bought the RX3 Ultra. I live in New York and aluminum kills my hands in December and January and I hate the new Mathews grip shape. All I ask on the videos is to give all the information on a bow. Your not the only reviewer that has made the RX3 Ultra look slow. Garrett Weaver has done the same thing. From other videos I've seen. The RX3 Ultra with the #2 cam out performed the traverse even though the traverse has a higher ibo. Sorry for the rant. Keep the videos coming!

      Gary Miller I appreciate the feedback. I use it as guidance to make better quality videos so to me it is important to hear from everyone that cares to comment. These were my first ever bow comparison videos and I have learned quite a bit. I’m filing the Traverse vs The Helix Ultra this weekend and I plan to put both bows on a draw board and provide that exact draw length in the video. It will be a number 2 cam on the Helix Ultra. I already put both bows on the scale to make sure the draw weights are matched and I will do the decibel meter test outside.
