As a Pole, surprisingly I understood 100% of Czech. Sometimes its hard, really, but in this video each Czech word was the same/almost the same/archaic as in Polish.
Czeski jest trudny miejscami do zrozumienia tylko z mowy. Powodem tego jest to, ze w niektorych rejonach, np. okolice Pragi mają rozny od Polskiej wymowy akcent

Because these texts from Bible are very archaic and similar even in other slavic languages. But I understand pretty much nothing from that Russian text because Russian is orhodox and their texts are logically different, based on different history and culture.

BTW, the Russian translation used here is not which is used by the Orthodox church but a somewhat modernised one, preferred by the protestants...
@@sahteekrem I meant mainly that translations of Bible in catholic countries had mostly some common source, while in ortgodox countries, it may be translated from different version of Bible.
Russian doesn't have long vowels. Czech doesn't have unstressed vowel reduction.
They really don't have long vowels? I thought that some other slavic languages have them, but they just don't mark it in their writting system.
@@PidalinSerbian has both phonemic vowel length and phonemic tones, but yea, we don’t mark them in writing.
@@Pidalinstressed vowels in russian does sound a bit longer. You're right. I think it's logical. And yes. Only stressed vowels are pronounced as they are written.
@@werehuman2999 As a Czech, I don't even understand that concept of "stressed" vowels. 😀 Czech is pretty monotone language and everything should sound always the same and long vowels are totaly independent thing, it's not some stress or accent.

I’m Polish and I love Russian especially the way the guy in the video speaks it sounds mystical.

In Russian milovat’ or miloval in the Past Tense means to have mercy on, to spare, to pardon.
There is also a meaning of this word as "to love," but it is very rarely used

Czech is very difficult to understand by ear.
Slovak and Czech are very similar in terms of vocabulary. Slovak seems native in pronunciation, but not czech. Even Polish seems closer in pronunciation than Czech
Czech has long vowels like Slovak which others either lack or it's not common at all.

Fun fact: Czech is a reconstructed language. Almost all Czechs used to be German speaking in the past and they had to revive their language practically from scratch. Eventually they managed to do it thanks to a few enthusiasts.

The language itself didn't need to be "reconstructed" necessarily to my understanding, but it had never been standardized before. And they certainly did manage to revive the language as a primary language over time.
Hungarian had a similar phase in history, where it had almost been replaced by German.

This fun fact is wrong. Most Czechs used to live in the countryside and I am pretty sure that they were monolingual in Czech, unless they lived in an ethnically mixed region. It was in urban areas where Czech competed with German. Also, the Czech language was not really reconstructed or revived, only standardized based on 16th century texts.

When I visited Prague I could understand every sign on the buildings. And when Czechs spoke slowly I could get the point of what they were saying. So you’re wrong.

Yes, but in some words and some dialects there is a "h" sound. Just listen how they say Bog ("Boh") in the video.

Czech is the only Slavic language I don't understand at all, even Sorbian is much easier to understand. When I heard the first time Czech, I thought it was some Western European language.
German influence had been tremendous.
What's your native language? Czech went through some phonetic shifts, which apparently make it hard to understand for speakers of other Slavic languages, but I am not sure how much of it is due to German influence. The Sorbian language is definitely much more affected by German in its pronunciation. Anyway, I am pretty sure that there are lots of Czech words and even short sentences which could be easily understood by other Slavs.
@@Ayazidas He is just some troll which bullshits about Czech everywhere where he can. He had to be really deaf if he thougt that Czech was some western language. 😀 Of course German had influence on Czech but just like you said, Sorbian is affected by German much more, mainly with vocabulary and also ofcourse with pronounciation as well.
Czech doesn't have any schwa sounds, everything is pronounced totaly clearly (or it should be), no nasal sounds, so it barely sounds like a western european language, but it doesn't even sound like other slavic languages with their vowel shifting and unclear sounds like e turning to something between E and O like in Russian. So I think Czech sounds very unique, you immediately spot a Czech accent when person is speaking in English. Czech is very monotone language, accent is always on start of the word, while for example Slovak or Russian are very melodic languages. And it's even better, I can hear that person is for example from Ostrava or Brno city by accent in English. 😀
Some people say that Czech sounds like German, but that's absolute nonsens, as a Czech, I can't even pronounce half of German sounds and their super long words look really scary to me, I can't even read that. Most of Germanisms in Czech are somehow czechised, so Germans would not even recognize it.
For 95% people Czech (and other Slavic languages) sound just the same, the most often like Russian because Russian is basically the most known and spread Slavic language. Often foreigners think, when Czech is spoken, that it is just Russian or Serbo-Croatian due to harder pronunciation, which f.e. Slovak or Ukrainian doesn't have. Sometimes also foreigners think that Czech is Polish due to big word similarity and ž, ř sound.
@@ctiradperunovic It's funny because even when you are a slavic speaker (I am Czech), other slavic languages sound just like "some kind of Russian to you," you need some experiences to distinguish them. I would say that Czech and Polish are the most different in case of accent and pronunciation. I don't understand how can someone say that Czech sounds like Russian, we have totaly different accent and to pretend Russian accent is really hard for us.
When I really have no idea what language is that, it's mostly Bulgarian. 😀
