Ranking 6 Different Carrots By Taste and Overall Performance

- Опубліковано 5 сер 2020
- We grew 6 different types of carrots this year. yWe tasted them all and then ranked them by taste. After our carrot taste test, I ranked each of these 6 different types of carrots by how they did overall in our garden.
In this group of carrots, there were 5 heirloom carrots, and one hybrid carrot. The six carrots in this video are in no particular order are Purple Dragon, St. Valery, Purple Haze, Koral, Cosmic Purple, and Black Nebula.
If you've grown any of these carrots, let us know what you thought of them in the comments below.

Thank you for doing this. It’s a huge help to get actual first hand reviews of something like carrots that has so many different varieties. It saves lots of precious growing season time.
You're very welcome! I was hoping that some folks out there might find it useful.
I wholeheartedly agree! I LOVE real experience/production/taste reviews. Great series!
I really like the variety of colors! They would make a salad look picture perfect. Great points made on the rankings friend 😊
I agree. In a salad, they can really add some eye appeal.
What a lovely carrot review ☺️
Thank you very much, Ariana!
Them carrots all looked great, thanks for ranking them in taste.👍🏻
Thanks David! We sure got a bunch of them this year.
I had never seen rainbow colored carrots before. I got some sent in my Imperfect Food box today. I'm looking forward to tasting them. Too bad I didn't know about them being sweeter if harvested more towards cooler weather. I'm in Sun Valley, California.
I hope you enjoy them. The purple ones also have more antioxidants.
I loved your video! Your voice is really nice to listen to and the descriptions you gave were organized and thorough.
Thank you very much, Danielle! I really do appreciate the kind words. I'm glad that you enjoyed the video.
Great review! My fav for juicing is Black Nebula & the niece & nephew love eating it cause Their mouth turns purple😄 My fav orange carrot for eating fresh is Shin Kurota, it’s so sweet and almost buttery. My fav for production is Amarillo carrot, it just grows consistently large nice carrots wherever I plant them. I did get 4 new variety I haven’t grown yet from Baker Creek & they are springing up now. I love carrots 🥕 in general.
Lol, I never thought of the purple mouth benefit, but that's a good one :) I'm with you....I love carrots in general too. Thanks for the info on the Shin Kurota and the Amarillo. I might have to check into those.
Midwest Gardener , You’re welcome 😀
Nice video, such beautiful carrots! I really like 'Atomic Red', coral/pink colour and yummy raw and cooked. Just received Black Nebula seeds! They will be my juicing carrot this year. Least favourite are white/pearl carrots, not much 'carrot' flavour, just a bit too bitter.
Thanks for sharing your favorite. I'm not too fond of white types either. I'm growing several types I've never grown before this year, so I'm really looking forward to seeing how I like them.
Thankful for the over winter tip, I was going to let so many go to seed, saved🎉 😍😍😍great video!
Thanks Lesley!
Those are some nice looking carrots. Thanks for the taste test and information. Stay safe and have a great weekend!
Thanks CB! We're doing our best to stay safe. You have a great weekend too!
Good afternoon Jim. I really haven't done much carrot growing. I guess with the current state of things I guess I'll do more this year. Thanks for the review of all of them. Stay safe my friend. Best wishes Bob.
Good afternoon Bob. Yep, with as much room as you guys have, you might as well give them a shot.
Interesting review Jim. I bought some of those exfoliating bath gloves for washing veg and they worked well on my black nebula carrots, they were super hairy but scrubbing with the gloves on made quick work of them. Those gloves have been great for washing up.
Thanks Nikki! I sure will try to keep those gloves in mind for next year.
Awesome review ! Your carrots did really good . I have never really had much like growing carrots .
Thanks Aaric! They really like sandy loam soil.
Amazing video😍❤️
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks for the video!
You're welcome!
Thank you so much for such a valuable information!!!! Appreciate your work! Will try to grow your #1 and #2 next year. :)
You're welcome! I hope you enjoy growing and eating them as much as we did.
@@MidwestGardener Thank you :)
6A mid Kansas here. thanks for the info.
You're welcome! Always great to hear from another Kansas gardener.
Cool video! Your carrots look beautiful!
I've grown St. Valery, Purple Haze, and Black Nebula. I've also grown the cheap seed varieties like Danvers and Little Finger, and Chantenay. I tried growing the Solar Yellow last year. I will have to try Cosmic Purple and Purple Dragon this winter, I haven't heard of those. I thought the Solar Yellow tasted the best, Solar Yellow was much sweeter and juicier than others I have tried. I seem to get the highest yields from the boring old varieties like Danvers, Chantenay, and St. Valery. I didn't get great germination on Purple Haze last season, but the seeds were also treated unfortunately. The purple types always seems to grow the slowest for me and don't yield as well, but they are so cool when served raw or pickled and seem to tolerate the heat in spring better than orange varieties. I usually plant carrots in November/December for harvest in February/March. By April and May my carrots turn into wood. You can let hybrid carrots go to seed, it just means the next season will be a surprise! The F2 generations from seed saved from hybrids gets even more interesting, all kinds of unpredictable traits. Happy gardening and cheers
Thanks a bunch for sharing all of your carrot results!! It's kind of interesting how different varieties seem to do better in one location than another. True about the F2 hybrids. That is the generation that has the most variety. I have some F2 hybrid peppers growing this year. It's interesting to see just how much variation there can be in siblings. I also have some F3 pepper hybrids growing, and I'm still trying to figure out which ones to save for next year. Thanks again for the information on your carrots. Very useful, and I'm sure others will think so too.
Beautiful carrots!!🥕
Thanks Melinda! We had a great year for our carrots. We ended up putting a bunch in the freezer.
@@MidwestGardener this is my first year and i got micro carrots lol..i wish you could see pictures
Lol, well, you can only go up from there :) They seem to grow pretty well in our sandy loam soil as long as I give them plenty of water. I'm sure you will do better next year!
I have just planted some Purple Sun F1 looking forward to harvesting in Autumn as I've never tried a purple carrot before and thought it would be great to have the first one I tried grown by myself
Very informative video too just what I was looking for with how they compared in taste etc. I have subbed!
Sounds great! Harvesting in cool weather will make them a bit sweeter too. Thank you very much for subscribing!
Hello Jim
All those carrots look good
Hello. They were all good. Some were just better than others.
Nice review of your carrots. They all look very tasty. I hardly ever buy those orange things that they call carrots from the store, unless we're making soup or stew. I can't wait to start my crop this year. Have a good rest of the week.🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋
Thanks Shirley! They were/are pretty good. I know what you mean about the store bought ones. I do prefer the ones we grow. You have a great rest of the week too!
Great video
Thank you!
Thanks for that review Ive been looking for some good open pollinated carrot varieties. I am wondering where you got the initial seed. The ones I got for this fall are all F1s. I have a lot of wild carrots around me so I wonder if they might cross with the wild ones when I save seeds.
You're welcome! Some of the seeds were gifted to me, and some seed I already had, and the rest I got from Baker Creek. I'm pretty sure that wild carrots can cross with your cultivated carrots, which would probably not work out too well.
Thanks
You're welcome!
really nice video. It would be interesting to see if some of them taste drastically better after cooking. My experience (unscientific) is that how they taste fresh is often very different than how they taste cooked, and I almost always eat them cooked.
Thanks Peter. I wish I would have had time to do that comparison also. I agree....that would make an interesting comparison. When they are harvested can make a big difference too.
I'm still learning with carrots, but my favorite so far is oxheart. I can harvest those without worrying about breaking the root. I love growing different carrots because it's fun to have different colors, but I really don't like amarillo from baker creek as they are always scrawny and not much flavor.
Thanks for sharing the tips on Oxheart and Amarillo, Rose. We enjoy trying different types, and were a little surprised by our own taste test.
@@MidwestGardener Thank you for reviewing your carrots and how they grew!
You're welcome!
Rose, I also LOVE Oxheart carrots! We spiralize carrots a lot and those work great for that!
I've been curious about oxheart also as we grow in heavy soil. May have to try. Surprised the Amarillo didn't do better for you - it was our sweetest carrot in our rainbow bunches we sold last season.
have you tried the atomic red carrot? Im going to try it out.
I have, but it's been 4 or 5 years ago....or more. I couldn't really tell you where it would rank compared to these.
Of these I have grown cosmic purple only, which produced some nice roots, but not large in number. We enjoyed the flavor though.
I'm in zone 7, northern GA. Our favorites have been Danvers half long (176?) A nice consistent size orange carrot, also good for juicing. A surprise for us was a free seed from Baker Creek that was our top performer last year - Amarillo. A pale yellow root, sweet and the longest of any variety we have yet grown. Will grow again this fall for sure.
Parisienne does well for us too since we have heavy soil, nice market appeal as they are small and round. Hard to clean though and a favorite of our local wild rabbits, so we don't get many of those.
Thanks for the information on the carrots that you've grown. Much appreciated. I'm not sure why, but I've never grown Danvers before. I might have to give those a try. And it's nice to know that Amarillo does well for you too.
@@MidwestGardener we grew scarlet nantes and danvers side by side one year and decided we liked the danvers just a bit better. Similar size.
Thanks! I'll try to keep that in mind when I'm making a list for next year.
I haven't tried many carrots. Danvers half-long and Scarlet Nantes do nicely for me, and inexpensive seeds are available everywhere, so I stick with them. (I also prefer vanilla ice cream to other flavors. I think I'm food-boring!) Hope you got a lot done in the cool days. I did!
Lol, there's nothing boring about sticking with things you like. Scarlet Nantes is a good one, and those seeds are very easy to find in the spring around here. I did get a few things done around here during the cooler weather, but I'm still behind as usual. I know you appreciated the cooler weather with all of the plants you have to take care of. We're back to the heat again though.....oh well.
@@MidwestGardener our cool was a little deeper, I think. We had two days that it was 56F at dawn. In August? Man, I'll take that any year and work from soon after dawn until I drop at noon. : ) Now off to start the first batch of tomato sauce. I've harvested/frozen a bushel so far with 20 pounds on the counter waiting for the freezer bags to be freed.
@@wendysgarden4283 Yep, 56 is almost jacket weather. You can't beat that for this time of year. Sounds like you are having some impressive harvests!
I grew bolero and Danvers this year. I thought the fall crop was much better as you pointer out.
Thanks Larry! I will have to check out bolero. I hadn't heard of that one.
Which one tasted the sweetest?
It's been a while, so I can't really remember.
Hi friend..i have a question for you plz,I'm trying to save seeds from a pickle cucumber..i let it mature and turn yellow on the vine..i removed the seeds and tried planting some to make sure they're viable but they didn't sprout..im wondering if it's cuz they need to be fully dried b4 planting..i planted a few fresh ones..i hope it was mature enough?so my question is do cucumber seeds have to be fully dried b4 planting? Thx
I don't know if they have to be fully dry or not. I've always let mine dry first. It only takes a few days. The seeds should be full and firm. Sometimes you will have those skinny seeds that aren't viable.
@@MidwestGardener thank you very much
@@mystiquerose620 You're welcome.
What kinda carrot has a bitter zingy zesty taste to it I have some that are sweet and some that are zingy like spicy or taste weird
I can't think of one that fits that description.
Performance carrots
Some of them did well.
Good afternoon to you 😊 l found your channel by accident and lm so glad l did.Lots of information about lots of things.l have a allotment hear in the south west of England for about eleven years and one of my favourite things to grow are carrots,So thank you so very much for this very interesting video.lve been slowly going through your videos and lm finding them a great help . Good afternoon. I'm really glad that you found my channel. I have quite a few viewers from the U.K. There's always room for more :) Thanks so much for subscribing!
He needs to label them or point when talking about them.
Thanks for the tip!
I guess 6 is worst and 1 is best?
That is correct.
You can't serve God and mammon
Food for thought
I'm not sure what that has to do with carrots, but thanks.
