Never Buy Seeds Again - How to Collect Carrot Seeds

  • Knowing how to collect carrot seeds is a little more involved than typical seed saving. Carrots are biennial plants and don't flower until their second year. By planning ahead and leaving a few carrots in the ground over winter, you can reward yourself with thousands of carrot seeds.

    Instead of buying seed to start with, I recommend just planting a carrot top and letting it re-root. Since it's already mature, it will produce flowers that same year (instead of having to wait two years to generate flowers if you start from seed). It's better than buying seed, because if you buy a carrot, you get to eat the carrot AND you get flowers that same year!

      I'm doing that this year. We got some really nice sweet carrots and decided to take an inch of them and root and seed them out for next summer. They were an organic store bought carrot.

      @@Emeraldwitch30 That's when you know it's good - when you've already eaten the carrot! And you know, in my experience, you don't even need to leave an inch! (I only left about 1 cm.) When the flowers are in full bloom, they have the most wonderful smell, almost like sweet corn bread. I'm excited for you!

      @@cvdinjapan7935 I've grown out a few carrot types over the years. Little finger carrot is a favorite and I found 4 cosmic purple carrots I must face missed last fall so even tho they are very tiny if I get a few 100 seeds (or more cross fingers) I'm hoping to try again this year to put a good bunch aside for next year.

      @@mikhailkalashnikov4599 I have learnt from other UA-camrs that if seeds are unavailable or too expensive - as is the case most times- we can utilize a more practical and ingenious method: Grow from kitchen stock and collect the seeds after a few months. This way u now have an endless supply of seeds. Even if u purchase the seeds, Gary and a few other popular bloggers also encouraged us to allow a few crops to go to seed.
      By following these suggestions, I have saved money which I then reallocated to making other necessary purchases. I'm happy and feel fulfilled.
      I would love to take a moment to say thanks to all u guys for sharing ur vast wealth of information and experiences so generously with others. Thanks for taking the time to deal with our individual questions and needs. ♥️♥️♥️

Seeds you harvest from them might not grow new plants and some may not grow any seeds at all. A second problem could be that you waited too long to harvest the tops and the seeds already "flew" out during a storm or windy day. You could try and clip them off while the flowers are still alive and dry them inside, to make sure you keep the seeds. That works for me, at least.

      carrots are the easiest thing in the world to grow. Just throw out seeds and water. I throw them out anywhere I have weeds that I don't want so the carrots will fill the space in.

    Just a suggestion....the mesh size of the seive and colander would be a significant piece of information...great informative vid

    • @GardenerScott
      @GardenerScott  5 років тому +2

      Thank you. That is a good idea. I used a basic colander and I imagine the big holes are probably standard among different brands. The mesh is more important in separating the seeds and chaff. I have used a sieve, plastic screening material (like from a window), metal screening material, and retail screens sold specifically for separating seeds. I use a mesh/screen that works best for the seeds I'm separating because the same size doesn't work best for all seeds. Often it's trial and error to choose the best one.

    Wow. That was very very helpful information.!!
    Also, as an fyi, i tried to grow carrots from a carrot end (bought store carrots, ate them, and shoved the cut-off ends into my garden). The stems grow quickly and produce flowers immediately (not biannual). I dont know if any carrots grew (yet) or if they even will at all by that method.
    BUT, if it's flowers and seeds you're after, for sure just plant a used carrot end and you will definitely get flowers.

    • @GardenerScott
      @GardenerScott  4 роки тому +11

      Thank you. The carrots from the store spent their first season in the ground and when you grew the ends, they effectively flowered in their second season; they're still biennial because it takes two seasons to produce seeds. You should get carrots from the seeds, but they may not be exactly like the original. Most of the store carrots are hybrids so the seeds will not grow true to the parent. Go for it and see what you get.

      Thanks, Kate. I didn't discuss storing in this video. Be sure the seeds are completely dry before storing. It's best to keep your seeds in a cool, dark, dry location. Refrigerators can be a great choice. I keep my seeds in glass jars, but envelopes and bags are good too.

    I never realized those plants were carrots. In the field behind my house growing up those flowers were everywhere. I just assumed they were weeds like everything else back there. But it makes sense now that they were probably carrots as that field used to be part of a small farm many years before. There were also abandoned greenhouses that would grow entirely full of tomato plants every year before they were eventually torn down because of the amount of wildlife they were attracting to the neighborhood.

      There are two wild carrots that look like the ones in the video. Queen Anne’s Lace and hemlock. Queen Anne’s is edible. Hemlock is deadly. Always research. I’d hate if you ate the deadly ones.

      @Jaradis 4 роки тому +1

      @@kmcte5 Thanks, but I haven't lived there for 30 years, and my mother sold the house, and that field was plowed over and a house put on the field probably 10 years ago. Interesting. I knew queen anns lace could be used as a salt substitute. And the way to tell the edible one from the poisonous one is one has a purpleish stem and one dosent (not shure wich is what now) but i didnt know it was also a type of carrot! Thats cool.

    Hi Scott, thank you for the wonderful education. During these CV19 times we here in the UK are having a difficult time purchasing seed due to very high demand. We will all learn lessons during hard times, thankfully you are sharing good ones! Can I ask , can you use this process on all varieties of carrot?

    • @GardenerScott
      @GardenerScott  4 роки тому +1

      Yes, this method will work with all varieties, but some varieties may be hybrids. If you save the seed of a hybrid carrot, you won't know what characteristics the resulting plants will have.

      Storing the seeds in a zip-lock bag in the freezer wouldn't be a problem; they keep longer than 2 years in the freezer than at room temperature. The reason I say "longer than 2 years" is because at room temperature, the seeds become duds after the 2-year period.
