Instead of buying seed to start with, I recommend just planting a carrot top and letting it re-root. Since it's already mature, it will produce flowers that same year (instead of having to wait two years to generate flowers if you start from seed). It's better than buying seed, because if you buy a carrot, you get to eat the carrot AND you get flowers that same year!

I got a bunch of carrots from my employer when she had a whole bag of spoiled carrots to throw away. Instead of just chucking them in the compost, I took the ones that looked like they had a good chance of sprouting a top, chopped them in half, and planted the top part while composting the bottom. Thank you for showing your technique for collecting and processing the seeds. I will be doing it later in the year. Why not harvest all your carrots though? You can enjoy them and re-root the tops, then you'll get the flowers that same year as the plant is already matured. I experimented with 10 store bought carrots. All 10 rooted and sent up shoots! Looks like a bumper crop of seeds later!
I planted mine from carrot tops...ate the leaves, waited for the main stem to grow out...got the flowers... didn't know what to do with them...or how to harvest them...or for how long to leave them to get seeds. So here I am. Thank you Sir.

I love how very thorough you are - showing absolutely every step, and close-ups of the flowers and seeds. I'm a little visually impaired, and this really helps me!
I bought organic rainbow carrots at the grocery store and cut the tops off with an inch or two of the tap root. I left them in water till they sprouted new roots and I popped them in the ground. They won’t regrow the root vegetable but they have started to flower and will have seeds for my seed bank next year. Thank you for the tips on harvesting the seeds!

Thank you so much for posting this video - love how well the seed collection is done and the work that it is involved to do it. Now I can collect my own carrot seeds myself instead of buying them. Again, thank you.
One mature carrot plant will give hundreds of thousands of seed! Wow! (Based on your estimates- on the low side) 1 carrot plants x15 stems x 25 umbels x 30 flower clusters x 10 flowers per cluster 1x15x25x30x10= 112,500 seeds FROM ONE PLANT Thank you so much for all the information!
Scott, we got some cosmic purple seeds from the store and I think I will try to let some go to seed as well. I'm amazed by how big these plants get from all those little seeds.
Wow. That was very very helpful information.!! Also, as an fyi, i tried to grow carrots from a carrot end (bought store carrots, ate them, and shoved the cut-off ends into my garden). The stems grow quickly and produce flowers immediately (not biannual). I dont know if any carrots grew (yet) or if they even will at all by that method. BUT, if it's flowers and seeds you're after, for sure just plant a used carrot end and you will definitely get flowers.
Thank you. The carrots from the store spent their first season in the ground and when you grew the ends, they effectively flowered in their second season; they're still biennial because it takes two seasons to produce seeds. You should get carrots from the seeds, but they may not be exactly like the original. Most of the store carrots are hybrids so the seeds will not grow true to the parent. Go for it and see what you get.
Good to know! I recently planted a rainbow color mix and I hope that they grow. It has purple as well as white, black, red, yellow, and normal orange. Thanks for sharing/making this video. Heidi
So glad I found you, was wondering how to harvest the burrs in the carrot flowers. I planted carousels, they were so delicious and the most beautiful ones I've ever seen. A little disappointed to learn they only last 2 years, oh well I'll have some to give away.
Great video.....couple of comments from the peanut gallery. First- I planted carrots and ate them first year no problem. I left a few for following year. They grew back and flowered! At flower stage after handling I got nauseous (ignored it). When I cut flowers off I got nauseous ( ignored it) sifting seeds same thing. ( ps. Don’t sift on balcony you will have carrots growing everywhere in your yard....even a rock yard) planted new seeds and was excited to eat my first one. My throat closed up on me. Scary!! I recommend wearing a mask when harvesting the seeds if you get that same feeling I did.
Gardener Scott has so many videos on so many topics and packed with great info... I've re-watched a few just to keep on top of all the info he's giving for free... Thanks so much Dr Scott...

thank you very much for a simple way to collect carrot seeds, now I will never buy anymore carrot seeds again. I just let 5 carrot plant to bloom flower and let it dry for collecting seed. once again thank you very much❤️👍
@@gailland8681 If the seeds you bought from the store were F1 hybrid seeds and not heirloom seeds, they're basically very unstable, inbred seeds that react weirdly after they first grow. Seeds you harvest from them might not grow new plants and some may not grow any seeds at all. A second problem could be that you waited too long to harvest the tops and the seeds already "flew" out during a storm or windy day. You could try and clip them off while the flowers are still alive and dry them inside, to make sure you keep the seeds. That works for me, at least.

Not good, especially near edible food. It can kill you if ingested!

Thanks! Welcome to the channel and enjoy your journey.
Thanks a ton. Started growing 🥕 some flowers and was wondering. Is literally a therapy and we eat what we grow!
Exactly what I needed, thanks @Gardener Scott! Left some carrots I really loved overwinter and have an abundance of seed now to last me to next few years (or to help me start a carrot farm).
I really appreciate your clear, measured and good paced video. It was to the point, informative and you're very well spoken. Thankyou!

Thank you for the video, it was very informative. I like the way you talk us through each step.
Absolutely the best seed saving demo I have ever seen on youtube. Thank you!
Loved the video going to see if you have videos about collecting seeds from other vegetables to grow.
Awesome, thank you! I left a few carrots over winter, now I know exactly what to do!
Glad I could help!
Thank you so much for posting this video - love how well the seed collection is done and the work that it is involved to do it. Now I can collect my own carrot seeds myself instead of buying them. Again, thank you.
You're very welcome!
Your voice is sooo calming. I binge watched you for the past 3 days.
Thanks, Jaime. 🙂
So that's where carrot seeds come from!!!
EXACTLY. never really thought about it.
At first I think that the seed were chemical
One mature carrot plant will give hundreds of thousands of seed! Wow!
(Based on your estimates- on the low side)
1 carrot plants x15 stems x 25 umbels x 30 flower clusters x 10 flowers per cluster
1x15x25x30x10= 112,500 seeds FROM ONE PLANT
Thank you so much for all the information!
THANK YOU VERY MUCH! I NEVER KNEW THIS AND I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO TRYING IT! GOD BLESS YOU AND YOURS!
I finally got carrots 🥕 to grow. I will keep some for collecting seeds ,thank you.👍👍😊😺
Wonderful!
Scott, we got some cosmic purple seeds from the store and I think I will try to let some go to seed as well. I'm amazed by how big these plants get from all those little seeds.
You are an AWESOME teacher!! Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful talent.
@@GardenerScott Thank you!! I will get the seeds this year and see what happens next year.
You were extremely informative, much appreciated.

You are such a good teacher. Great voice, tone and speed for learning. Thank you.
You're very welcome!
Brilliant. Thanks. I'm just about to do this so your guide is just what I needed.
Thanks! That is scary. Apparently you have a sensitivity to the carrot flowers and dust.
That was great, thank you!
PS love the doggy chilling out not listening to a word you say 🤣
You and me both!
Hi Scott!
Boston company selling seeds label recommendation date and yearly.
Your experience how many years we can save seeds
i planted the top of a carrot and now the flowers have started to dry up, whole process took 6 months :) now i know how to plant carrots! thanks!
Thank you for this. Am new to cultivating so this was perfect!
Gardener Scott has so many videos on so many topics and packed with great info... I've re-watched a few just to keep on top of all the info he's giving for free... Thanks so much Dr Scott...
Thank you!I did not know that about the 2 year thing
I finally have 3 carrots that I flowered.. lots of umbles! Thank you for posting how to harvest and clean the seeds. I'm excited to plant these next year.
Happy gardening from 🇨🇦
Thanks, now I won't starve. Great video, very helpful.
Glad to hear that. 🙂
thank you very much for a simple way to collect carrot seeds, now I will never buy anymore carrot seeds again. I just let 5 carrot plant to bloom flower and let it dry for collecting seed. once again thank you very much❤️👍
Very informative and well displayed procedure. Thank you.
You're welcome.

last year I grew carrots from the store. they produced flowers but they were empty without seeds
@@misfitvillainz1769 maybe. but I did harvested seeds. from a beet.. that I bought from the store. planted it. and it gave me seeds.
but carrots didn't give me any seeds.
Thank You , Scott
For the complete and easy hands on seeding process , A thru Z ......
Very valuable information ........
Glad it was helpful!
I like your channel. This is a really good video. I learned a lot!!! Thank you!
You're awesome Gardener Scott thank you!
Perfectly explained.
Thank you very much.
By the way, looveed the background music
I just discovered wild carrots this year, along with their highly medicinal properties, and I'm so excited to learn all I can about this wild plant! Thank you for this seed saving information! 😁
PS. I sure hope those "leaves of three" by your carrot bed are wild raspberry and not poison ivy!! 😬
We have poison ivy all over our yard here in MI, but we also get the prickly wild raspberry plants sprouting, too- stay away from leaves of three, folks! Not good, especially near edible food. It can kill you if ingested!
I never got the idea to collect carrot seeds, since I used all carrots. But since I found few carrots remained from last year, definitely U will keep them and wait for the seeds. Very good idea Scott, and nicely explained. Thank you.
i let my carrots go to seed and had tons of them! I had to wait a long time, but when i finally harvested the seeds they were nothing like what you buy. i have been confused until this video! thank you Gardener Scott!
