- The 1984 Chevy El Camino gets a wash after 16 years. It also gets cleaned out on the inside. But most importantly we try and start this classic to see what we are working with engine wise.

I bought a 1982 305 elcamino, back in 2005. And it didn't run to good when I got it. After air gap intake and a Edelbrock black series 850 cfm carb, and dual exhaust with flowmasters, good tune up, timing adjustment. It ran fucking hard, nobody believed it was a 305
Oh I believe it!! I've come across a couple like that!! 1 just recently...ratchet floor shifter and all lol
Thanks watching!
That a Conquista model as well. These cars are becoming a collectors item. I have a original 1987
Yep! I hope you stay tuned! Thanks for watching!
It's Alive... Great Job. I have 1982 Chevy G20 Sportvan 305 It took over 10 Hours to change spark plugs, You cant even touch the front 4 by hand.
I never used so many extensions in my life, I had to go through the wheel well to do them. It's still a daily driver 12 MPG.😂 . Thanks for the Video.
Wow! That's crazy! Glad you still drive it!
Thanks for watching!!
I bought my 84 with a 305 a couple months ago with 57,000 original miles, I decided to keep it as I save for a 5.3
Cool! Sounds like a plan! Struggling with my sibling on the fate of the 305 😆.
Thanks for watching!
Came for the brotherly shenanigans...was NOT disappointed! It was beautiful to watch you two fixing up that Elco. That engine can run. Throw a few belts and stuff at it, check the timing, and you should have a solid engine there. It would keep the momentum of your project going. Finding and acquiring an LS engine, while a worthy goal, could take the wind out of your sail. Cleaning your Elco up BEFORE getting your hands EXTREMELY dirty was an excellent idea . You two have a great car there. Looking forward to seeing you folks paint it up and doll it up. After you like what you see...THEN get rid of that darned 305 and toss an LS in it, lol! Aloha and take care!
I have no words for that statement! Just a big grin and laughing out loud! Thanks so much Jim! And thanks for watching! Preciate your support! 🍻
Agreed. Thanks for the comment maybe with your words added to mine I can convince my brother to roll wit the 305.😅
@@jasonboyd9691 did you read the end of Jim's comment? He's leaning more on my side 😁!
@@jasonboyd9691 It was a pleasure!
I have four antique vehicles that have familial connections to both grandfathers. I would be included to keep it. Plus two 1953 tractors connected to two of my great grandfathers.
Wow! Awesome! Thanks for sharing JB! Thanks for the support! Preciate ya!
the 305 is a solid Motor decent power keep it till is stops- save up for what your want
Appreciate the advice, but it has stopped lol... Thanks for watching!
Just found your channel, subscribed. Love it, especially the el camino. 😊
Hey! I appreciate you subscribing! It's coming up soon, getting a little housekeeping done to empty out the garage. Thanks for watching! 👍🏼 🍻
I’d get the 305 running and driving, if you really need it use it, while putting something better together. The 305 is fine for a non performance daily driver, not really hot rod material. A mild 350, or a 383 would be a drop in. You could go old school big block Chevy or spend the big buck$ on an L$ conversion… depending on your intentions.
Hey thanks for the input! We're still sorting the direction details, so no rush to drive. Thanks for watching! 🍻
This is gonna be a dope build. 🤩
Preciate ya 😊😊!
Definitely worth keeping and rebuilding honestly not in to much bad of shape
I'll take this under advisement...
Thanks for watching!
That thing is in beautiful shape is a diamond in the rough is worth bread let alone your sentimental value a lot of people would love to get their hands on that thing
Thanks! And thanks for watching!
305 engine tough reliability...that cruck is classic make a sleeper
Haha! Yessir! Thanks for watching!
I just picked up an 87 SS a couple days ago.
😯 Nice! I've always loved the styling of the SS!! Thanks for watching!
luv your channel.
Hey thanks so much! I appreciate you and your support!
No matter what y'all do with it, I'm tuned in. I've mentally decided that I'm going to daily drive an El Camino for as long as I can (winter aside). No more monthly car payments for me.
Ha! I hear you! Preciate ya staying with us! Thanks!
I have rebuilt a few Chevy 305 engines, the decks on the 305 heads are thin compared to the 350 heads,In all rebuilts,I had to replace the heads on the 305 with heads from a 350,which work out good.used 305 heads we found were all bad.
Are they prone to have valve seal issues? Thanks for watching!
Yes,stress cracks around the valve seats, when we had the 305 heads clean and dusted, the stress cracks were visible
@@markboyce1001 😒😮💨😣
@@SkaggsGarage After the rebuilt, with the 350 heads, the 305 engines ran good, one was built back in 1989 and was installed in a 1969 Chevy pickup, daily driver, still running strong today, and it pulling trailers, hauling loads,no oil leaks, does not used oil,oil change every 3000 miles, the gentleman takes care of it
I literally just bought a elco a week ago ❤❤
Nice! 👊🏽✊🏽
Thanks for watching
I have an 82 el Camino with the original 267 in it. Kinda cool to see since they’re not so common to my knowledge.
82? Cool! You're right, hardly see them at car shows let alone on the road...
Thanks for watching!
I have an 82 el Camino Royal Knight and it also has the original 267 in it.
I think it looks tuff in that patina paint
Thanks! And thanks for watching!
I'm glad you got it running, but it doesn't sound very healthy.
Does the transmission work?
If it works just drive it as is for a few weeks and work out all the small problems that pop up.
Aaah...no reverse. I needs a proper detail before I'd consider sitting in it though. Yeah hoping it was just the bad gas...lol NOT! Thanks for watching!
The 305 is a boat anchor, just can't make the kind of power that that El Camino deserves. Mine's got a 327 in it, and it definitely runs a lot better even with the highway gears in the diff. For yours I would absolutely rip that 305 out and put in a 383 or a 400 small block, but a 350 would work well too.
Hey thanks! I appreciate the advice and concur! Thanks for watching!
Wish I can see more. Your engine bay is all original. Smog pump n lines are still in. I desperately need to compare mine with one like yours. I can't figure out where passenger side smog tubes go into exhaust manifold.
Definitely all original and all there. I haven't torn into anything yet, so I can definitely snap a few pics for you. If you're on Instagram or Facebook, contact me @Skaggsgarage
Thanks for watching!
Great! I'll have to start a Instagram. One thing I learned is not to throw anything away. No matter the condition someone will want it or you will need to fix or restore. Parts are hard to come by. Great Elco. I love it. SUBSCRIBED.
@elcodreamin5280 thanks so much!
Remove the air conditioner and ALL the smog stuff. It's easier to work on. Will run better.
Sounds like you got a timing problem. Check your distributor and your timing mark and throw some sea foam in it.
@@tcapo514 Preciate ya! 🍻
Also have the 305 caballero and removed the stock carburetor and now I’m just like ugh what do I do
What do you mean? Did you get it back together again?
should call the car fred beautiful videos
That was a thought...lol
Thanks so much and thanks for watching! 🍻
That 305 Gone make you sad.
Ha! Tell my brother that please! Thanks for watching! 👍🏼
What model is that power washer. It's dope
Ha! I have no idea other than it's a ryobi with a Honda engine lol
TM would put a 480/480 in it and call it a day.
If you check my channel you'll see my 85 El Camino and man we ditched that tired 305 for a fresh built 350
Oh! She sounds good!! Thanks for watching!
U got exhaust leak
Yeah it's the tubes that run up from the manifold to the EGR emissions crap...😖
Least of our worries 😁.
Thanks for watching!
No the 80's 305 had major design flaws and were recalled multiple times.
I keep trying to tell him 🤣🤣
Thanks for watching!
Mine is original with 280,000 miles still going. What design flaws are you talking about?
That engine eas a pos.My father bought a 1979 El camino. The engine was trash in 1980.Put a 307 in it with a fresh 350 turbo trans go thru.A fine smooth ride. The vehicle rode as smooth or better than anything out there.AC worked excellent.
Sounds like a twin cylinder fiat 500...
Hahaha! Yeah pretty rough...
Trash it with carb
Yes! 😁😊
@@SkaggsGarage I personally would stay away from anything from 1980
Please do not hack the car up with a stupid LS swap.
Ha! I'm starting a "Rebuild a 305 Fund" I'll send you the link 😉!! Just kidding! Thanks for watching!
1984 305!!! Definitely not worth keeping!!!
Exactly! Thanks for watching! 😁
I'm currently thinking about buying a 1983 Elco with a 305 in it for $600 and wanted to know if it worth the money?
@jamesfisher3755 if it's not a complete rust bucket absolutely!!
@jamesfisher3755 the El or the 305? For $600, I'd say snag it? In researching for our project, parts are reasonable and plentiful. Thanks for watching!
@@SkaggsGarage I ment to say $6,000 mybad 🤣🤣🤣
Nope!!! Simple answer
Right?! That's what I'm saying! Thanks for watching!
@SkaggsGarage the car is cool but the 305 is junk. Tro in a 383 stroker or obviously LS swap it.
@SkaggsGarage or sell it to kamikaze chris. He always needs parts lol 😆
@michaelbrinkey8652 hahaha! Nah, she's a keeper. Too much family history...😁😆
