  • Week 4 of my 7 month journey as I train from zero prior experience to complete an Ironman in order to raise awareness for T2KO and support those facing this tough battle.
    This week I discuss my progression over the first month, prior injuries and rehabilitation as well as effects of completing most my sessions solo.

    Gels: it will take repeated use to acclimatise your stomach to take such a concentrated hit of sugars, GI distress should get better over time. Try different brands too, I find Maurten to work for me and is the official sponsor at Ironman at least in Europe, so it's good to train using the same brand as what you get on race day.
    Toilet: on the bike you pee while riding. If there is a downhill you can stand up and coast and let the wind blow it off, otherwise it drips into your shoes and you just have to take it. Then wash yourself off with a bottle of water from aid stations. With good eating plan and morning coffee, you shouldn't have to poop on race day.

      There you go! Thanks for the info!!!
      I did also get told to trial Maurten! I’m going to grab some next week after I finish these endura!

      Maurten is also very expensive, so I only start taking it about a month before race day. In training I drink straight maple syrup as a gel, you can get 50mL soft flasks from brands like Salomon to hold it. For sports drink I just do plain sugar + pinch of salt + lemon juice. 50-100g/L sugar depending on intensity and sport and weather. Warmer = more fluid intake = less sugar and vice versa. The prepackaged stuff might be better but my cheap solutions so far worked great for my 10h Ironman time.

    It's definitely worth looking into some running belts or vests! I did not realise how much strain it was on my wrist over long runs initially, it's like lifting 400g a rep for every stride you take. Good luck training!

    Second of all, something I really liked about running in Melbourne is that they have a lot of public toilets around, mainly by the parks. I was in St Kilda so not sure if they have them in your area.

    So I no longer use gels, they give me massive stomach issues and I’m doing an ultra race next year and can’t be dealing what that for 100km 😂 I’ve switched to things like raisins, a sandwich and banana, as well as drinking a hydration drink that will refill salt and hydration levels which will help muscle fatigue. Get yourself a running vest or backpack. Can store everything in there, keeps your hands free for better running position. Loving the videos so far!

    1- you’re not imagining things… trainer sets are tougher then riding outside. I had a coach that would make you drop 15-20% off of long rides if you do it on the trainer
    2- gels take a minute to get use too 😂
    3- SPI belt or Naked belt for your phone while running. I’ve recently switched to the naked belt because it holds my phone and a 500ml soft flask but you don’t even notice it there while running.

    I have a very cheap camel bag for my long runs. It has additional pockets for keys, phone, gels/snacks and of course water. Also if you have time, you can try rice cakes as snacks (Globaly Cycling network has a great video on it, how to make them). Sadly my stomach despises gels…

Small tip, try to look in your area for something like a triathlon club, there are usually loads of other crazy people training for an ironman who are looking to train with people! I get stumach issues really fast as well from gels. My recommendation are gels from maurten or amaxc. They don't give me any issues and the one from maurten is a bit more solide, amaxc is very liquide and easy to get in during effort. Goodluck!

    If they have the option, you should definitely swim in a 50 meter pool and learn how to flip turn, its the most translatable to open water swimming.

      @brodysearle  8 місяців тому +1

      The outdoor pool is 50m and indoor is 25m! I still haven’t mastered the flip turn, will start learning it more when I get a bit more confidence in the pool! Thank you heaps for the advice!

    • @DublinDapper

      Learning to flip turn is an absolute waste of time for an Ironman lol

    • @jtccligzy3373
      @jtccligzy3373 8 місяців тому +1

      Its defintely not, if you don't learn how to flip turn, you will be getting two-three more breathes while turning back, which you wont get while open water swimming. The flip turn wont allow for extra breathes to be taken and hold some sort of continuity. Its almost like every Ironman athlete learns the flip turn for a reason@@DublinDapper
