I think pacing strategy can be greatly improved. Yes, everyone has equal time to rest, but stronger riders have to rest at lesser power so recover for their effort better. Also don't see if particular strengths were played like climber pacing on the climb and aero expert spending more time on flats
Agreed. This type of content is actually what got me onto GCN. I like all their content but these types of adventures breathe fresh air into GCN and all cycling related UA-cam content.
just got some messages in the club ride chat about how the saturday ride was a ride not a race. But where is the fun in just riding :-) Especially when the message comes from somebody who needs to work out more instead of slowing down the saturday train :-)
@@letoatreides5165 According to DB a train that is up to seven minutes late is still considered to be on time. That´s how in their books only 20% of all trains are late...

So can we admit that Ollie just looked the most chilled of those three? He doesn't even look tired at all =D... I think that's a great afford, he didn't get dropped! I guess he trains a lot lately? Well done ! :)
Don't forget Ollie's a few years younger then the other two who have other obligations like family. And have probably not trained as much as Ollie of those obligations.
I requested this challenge like a year ago. You replied it was a great idea for a video. I can't believe you finally did it. The Olympic record for 100km in teams is 52km/h average and you did 40km/h without the full aero setup and no previous prep. I was expecting around 45km/h average though. I am sure you would have achieved it without traffic and Simon bonking at the end. This is an outstanding and impressive result. Congratulations you did great. I am very grateful with you for doing it.
They should have been four as in the classic TTT. Dont know when they started using aeroish bikes, but before the 80's I think there were pretty much standard race bikes.
@@martinhammarlund3975 You are right the official event was 4 team members. The team 100km TT has always been my favorite Olympic event. It's a shame they cancelled it for good. There was so much strategy and teamwork involved. A true essence of what the Olympic games should be.
I went 100km in 1:59:32 in 1991 at the Olympiapreis in Forst, Germany. Together with Jens Voigt and Bernd Dittert (who went to win Gold at the 100km TTT Barcelona 1992).
I have been trying to explain to a friend of mine the sound a road bikes gears whirring and tires on hot pavement makes when you have that perfect cadence on a warm summer day. To me that sound is intoxicating and keeps me going. Its almost like your bikes were mic'd. Thank you.
Brilliant video! This demonstrates the soul of roadies. With the anticipated tail wind, the team would have made it. This trial should have been done in Italy where the trains are never on time. They define a delay as a train 15 minutes late where all other European countries define a delay as being five minutes late. Chapeau to the effort!
I've been watching this show for a while now and I'm already updated to Si's solo 10 hour trip video but this video, in particular, is one of the most badass GCN Presenter moments in my personal opinion. I've seen you guys in other serious group rides together and I've seen you all compete against each other which are fun episodes. This one with the 3 of you representing the matching GCN cycling jerseys and your high performance bikes along with all of your fitness levels just shows how incredibly professional you all are when necessary. It's all fun and games in other episodes but there are times that the world needs to see you all that you are no joke! Regardless if Alex and Si are 10 years retired & Ollie the young buck pushing the pace.
My favourite video you guys have ever made. Ollie nailed it - it's all about collecting your mates and getting absolutely battered together. Loved seeing some sweet bikes absolutely sending it and the fun that was had. This is just feel-good awesomeness. Cheers lads!
I live in Toronto and do a 100k ride to the train back home every Sunday. I can completely relate to that last bit....not so much to the 45km/hr average lol
I totally agree with Ollie, this type of ride is absolutely my favourite - just going out with some strong mates and smashing it. There’s something beautiful about a well drilled pace line working together
11:30-11:40 Ollie! The joy of riding the bike and being with your friends is what does it for me! Winning IS great, but so is a good time with the people you love! Super fun to watch! 👏
Great video, love the fact the good Dr is handing out cans of whip ass left and right these days. Where was Connor for an epic bonk and Hank for blasting everyone's doors off in the first 40km only to bottom himself out by 60km. Great effort.
I like these kind of videos when the guys just ride. Great banter, barbs, etc. I am 64 and recently returned to riding 4-5 shorter rides per week in the 20mi range as I used to when I started riding again at age 54 when I could no longer run. I can go full gas more often or any time I feel like it, attack one of our many hills, and I love riding even more. It is just fun. I will ride my bike to town (20 miles) for a chiro appointment or other appointment and set my time to leave so I have to hustle. My own version of what you guys did. It is great fun. Nice work!
fantastic video - you didn't fail on your mission - you did 100K full gas. you failed on calculating your departure time, that's it. Well done! And you can always trust a PhD with nutrition and hydration data.
Bunch of Muppets 😂 my word that was tense, the suspense when the bonk monster came for you. That was real entertainment. And the three of you word jabbing each other was funny as. Great ride, great video 😀 Some really nice bikes 👍🔥
2:29 for a 100k ride is still a very decent time! Nothing like feeling you're giving it all out and piercing thru the wind with your ride mates, congrats chaps!!! 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
That reminds me of "The Likely Lads" sketch where the Station manager says to them "You missed the train? Well you are really lucky then" ; "How are we lucky?" ; "You have got those bikes to get home" 😂
I remember my first 100 miler and did it in 4:59. Such a great ride and demanding 3 min per mile (solo) is a ride I'll never forget. Great video, great fun, great memories.
I recently relocated from the mountains to a flat region, which has enabled me to consistently ride 100k's almost every weekend. This distance is perfect. Just returned from another gateway 100k and found your latest video waiting!
Blown gasket or not that was really inspiring Si. Thanks Ollie for the interesting numbers re power and Si telling me his Max HR, really good effort guys 🎉
My friends and I took 6.5h to do 100kms this weekend. Really puts this into perspective. Obviously if Olly had arranged the tail wind properly, they would have made it.
I loved the group speed challenge. You guys nailed it in the intro; lots of epics, lots of distance challenges, not enough of these group speed challenges. I would be happy to see more.
i am deeply late but these guys are moving and they all look amazing. that dogma F just looks so smooth on the road. id like to add this is a good challang for all cyclist to attempt to do.
Now, that was a worthwhile effort and video. An achievable goal requiring teamwork and precision. Thanks guys. Would like to know more about Ollie’s fuelling strategy.
Such fun! Great content! Epic challenge! Now this type of racing/personal best within teamwork, I really enjoy!! Please keep doing such crazy fun videos!!!
THIS was a great video. Failure is a remarkable teacher. Went on a 3 hour ride today w/ nothing apart from water and found myself Face-to-Face with the bonk wall. I was deceived by the temps being below 40c.
Best video in ages. Loved that one. More challenges like this please. I want to work up to cycling from mine (in Glasgow) to Edinburgh which is about the same distance. I couldn't dream of doing it in that time!
Don't blame Si, blame the stop lights! All is okay - all the gents are great "idiots with super nice bikes".... and still damn fast! My last ride, 2hrs10mins in saddle, had 17mins of stopping. Bloody lights around here!

Great effort gents. A cracking vlog and challenge. Ir reckon you need to do it again and kick its ass.
Very entertaining to watch! Like to see you do something similar again, one more man or woman perhaps needed for more rest in the wheels 🤔
You TdF'd it the whole way... camera man motorpaced you 😂
My best time for 100km was 3h40m… but I weigh 100kg and ride in runners lol
More stuff like this please! So much entertainment and not filled with sponsor talking points. Just mates having fun.

If you would have tried it in germany you would have easily made it. The train would have been delayed by 45 min the least…

@@letoatreides5165 According to DB a train that is up to seven minutes late is still considered to be on time. That´s how in their books only 20% of all trains are late...

It's mostly fueling, a lot of people underestimate it

The whole Ollie getting dropped is a meme of the past
Ollie was already rapid, and has got a decent amount fitter in the last couple of years. He is actually flying these days

There's something pretty inspiring about Si bonking hard and then at the end only wanting a bag of crisps and some water to ride back

Doesn't cost anything to own up to the highest-grade idiocy available. Unless you're a Tory MP, then it just costs the future of the country.

Hats off to Dr. Bridgewood. His pacing/fueling in these longer efforts is consistently on point. We can all learn from that.
Let’s face it - even riding like these guys did would be one hell of an achievement for a lot of us!
More like 95% of us
We're just mere mortals remember that.....
I saw this ride posted on Strava by Dr B, which I think was titled 'recovery ride', and thought WTF - that is fast! 🤪
😂
Has Ollie just become Ollie the un-bonk-able?! First with Alex in Majorca and now with Si on this fast 100km...
And as usual, after the ride Ollie looks like he just left the house. Didn't even sweat.
What a machine.
I'm glad this isn't a "ride 100km on a super cheap bike" video. It's refreshing to see some nice new bikes.
Si's lights have well and truly gone out but he's still being made to take the front
Cruel to be kind
