@@19hundoc47 unless someone’s a better than average car enthusiast the dodge v10 is most certainly overlooked for the more popular v8 powered corvettes and mustangs of the same time period. Sales alone proves that. Furthermore, the v10 when put in the heavy duty trucks of the 90’s was often overlooked for the “new” diesels when in comparison the power from the v10 was better to nearly identical until diesel advancements really took off in the late 90’s… and even then it wasn’t much. Its difficult to name any regular reliability issues with the v10. Even today the torque curve and power output from the v10 is better than any large displacement v8 in production. How often does some say “those dodge v10’s were a great engine, wish I could find one” when having a discussion about 90’s motors… it’s pretty rare. That’s Why I would call them underrated.

No need to throw the aftermarket at it either, its lots of fun for a daily driver. I have to admit it is hard on transmissions and tires, my 12 second 4000lb 70 GTO with 2.93 gears liked to break Th400s... with its 8:1 compression 455. Burnouts for distance by simply whacking the throttle was fun too. 1/8 mile was no problem leaving from idle and never touching the brakes. With compression and E85 its even more fun, like my 65 GTO.

Its almost all stock stuff, or stock replacement, and running 11s is rather easy. Headers and a camshaft/lifters and drop it in something as light as or lighter than the Viper.
If I get a bit crazy with it I can have the heads ported by Butler and upgrade the connecting rods, which makes the entire engine cost about $3200 and make around 550hp with nearly 600ftlbs.
I have a 72 Formula with a 455 HO in it, 8.8:1 compression, pushing a 3.08 gear, and it runs 12.60s. Its the original engine and had a ring and bearing job because its almost 50 years old. I am planning to clone it with a 71 Formula 400 I have, get another set of HO heads, put them on a 455, make it completely stock, and see if it will run in the 11s. Since that Formula has no AC, manual steering and brakes, and is a lot lighter than the every freakin option they had 72, it should get close to the 11s if not all the way in there.

The Viper was an amazingly well-engineered machine, and cost-effective too. The Viper's chassis was inspired by kit cars, being both cheap and stiff. The engine was the result of Lamborghini (then owned by Chrysler) taking the Magnum V10 used in Ram 2500 trucks and recasting it in aluminum, then providing tuned up internals for improved power and reliability. These two components held up dependably right into the modern era, and the Viper was only put out to pasture because the Challenger Hellcat produced more horsepower without having a bespoke engine, chassis and production line.

I live in a town/area in central NJ where it's common to see exotics, and even supercars, on a daily basis (Ferrari, Lambo, Audi R8, Nissan skyline, Maserati, Bentley, Rolls, etc .. high end Porsche, Mercedes, Audi, BMW, Corvettes, and muscle cars all day long) but it's still pretty rare to see a viper. I do see one from time to time but not often.
I would attribute this to the viper being a terrible daily driver, relatively high maintenance, terrible in rain or (God forbid) snow, and it's rather Spartan when it comes to features and amenities. It's a great looking, uncommon car that goes really fast and attracts attention. But that's about all it does. It's not comfortable, practical, or even remotely fuel efficient.
Considering the price of a new viper, you can get a lot more features and comfort (albeit maybe sacrificing some speed) from other choices which are better suited as daily drivers and most likely more fuel efficient. That being said, I'm surprised I don't see more older/used ones on the road that someone bought cheap just to have a fun fast summer car.

@@briansmith5539 Well now that's a trick question because they don't make them right now. Since its inception, it has been on and off production at different times.
2017 was the most recent model year and the base price was around $93k while the GTS went for around $110k and ACR model $120k.
There have been rumors of it's return circulating the past few years, with a new 2022 model sporting a V-8 as opposed to the previous V-10 and a price tag as low as $90k and as high as over $130k.
We'll have to wait and see. For now, you'll have to settle for a used one, if you can find it. There may even be a few 2016 and 2017 models floating around which were never purchased, so technically a brand new car but still 4 years old.

Trust me, their engines are underrated. Expect about 18% of the rated flywheel hp to be lost in the drivetrain. Which equates to 80 hp. So expect this Viper to make about 490 at the crank. This era of Viper's would run 192 mph, and yes, 40 additional horses over the flywheel rating won't yield much more top speed, but 192 mph wouldn't be possible with just 450 horses at the crank.
