The original first generation Dodge Viper RT10 has one legacy in most of car culture: FEAR. For today's review we drive a car that has been deemed incredibly unforgiving, dangerous, and intense for its era of the early 1990's. The Dodge Viper came out as a car that used parts from everything - even a Dodge Dakota. So what made the Dodge Viper so intense for the masses and non-professionals? The lack of electronics. There is no stability control, no traction control, or anything to save the driver from making mistakes. It's the ultimate test of driver discipline and skill. Don't go fast enough and it's not rewarding, barely go over the limit and you are off the road. So are we able to tame Carroll Shelby's spiritual successor to the Shelby Cobra? Let's talk about it. Thanks for watching!

Yup,it’s a sports car not a rolling computer.
Having owned 6 Vipers of all generations I can say that they do exactly what you tell them to do. Use driving technique and the car works very very well
is there room in the trunk for my golf clubs and pull cart??
How is the power comparison with the 1st gen and the one from 2004 and up? Would you say the first gen is still fast?
@ZondaF355 - I am "SO HAPPY" to hear you say that.!! Everyone say's the Viper didn't have this or that as Safety features etc. BUT ...... neither did my 1955 Chevy and all the cars back then. I still want to own and drive a Viper .... 'EARLY EDITION'. !

Tvr speed 12. Stopped before taking off due to being so dangerous :( wish they built them
@Trevor Halperin my favourite is the cerbra I love how long they are. The stupidly low roof line the amazingly wacky interior and the sound of the V8. Been after a fixer upper one for years but still out of my reach currently. Hopefully one day :)
@Trevor Halperin the segaris are definitely cool and different. When the factory closed down they left behind a lot of molds for the cars. I'd of loved to of gotten my hands on one but I don't actually know the fate that became for them. I'm in UK myself but actually have a 1979 dodge sportsman 6 birth RV I'm renovating. Credit where credit is due. It was built solid. Especially compared to most British vehicles of the same era.
'90s.
TVR Typhoon is more dangerous than Tuscan because it was the only road-legal TVR to hit the 200mph mark (more than 210mph for supercharged variant) with no electronic assistance nor enough downforce to stay on the track properly, also not to mention how short the wheelbase is
I bought a 1995 Viper with 12k miles on it back in October. I had a Challenger Scat Pack which was faster, but definitely doesn’t feel like it. The Viper is so analog. It’s the most engaging car I’ve ever driven. I don’t even touch the radio ever, not because I can’t hear it over the exhaust (I can’t), but because I want to focus on the experience.
Awesome review. Thanks for posting.
The Dodge Viper is the scariest car I've ever rode in. It's such a tight interior it feels like if you crash, you're gonna die on impact

@@brianc5537 me to till I hit a wall at the track (back left hit into 180 and then back right hit) and walked away completely unscathed! I realised just how great those little shitboxes are and upgraded to the older spec (NA pop up headlight model) chucked a roll cage in it (you know, to protect the thing that matters most) and never looked back! 2 years happy sailing around the track so far and still giving a different feel every drive!
Plus it always fun beating the bigger cars to the back straight so you can hear them scream past again lol
@@brianc5537 Take away ABS, Traction Control, Any roll protection, and airbags then add 250 horsepower and then you will know what a Viper is like.
Everyone is debating about the Viper being "the most dangerous car" and I'm sitting here in a Ford that's caught on fire 3 times. lol
last year here in Ct a guy just bought a brand new Corvette was driving it home when all of a sudden it burst into flames it had less then 50 miles on it .

Hernan Dominguez-Rivas totally right- I saw one when I was five years old and was like...what the heck is that thing?!
Lol Star Wars speeders🤣
Hernan Dominguez-Rivas it was quite the big deal. Went to the Dodge dealer to see it. I wasn’t a fan. Always respected and praise Dodge for bringing it to the market. Took balls to bring such a raw car to a market where luxury blended with performance was becoming a thing.
These came out when I was 6, almost 7. We went down to the dealership afterhours to look at it because the internet didn't exist back then. I stood there for a half hour, face pressed to the glass, just...in awe, staring at this crazy car. In a world of Chrysler K cars, boxy trucks, fox mustangs and 3rd gen camaros this car blew my damn mind. I recorded, on vhs, motor trend and car and driver's weekly tv shows in hopes I'd catch the one with the review of the viper. I bought my first car and driver magazine just to see pictures of it. To a car kid in the early 90s, the Diablo, F40, and McLaren F1 were dream cars but there was no chance of ever seeing one in real life in a small town in Arkansas. The viper though, it was at the local dealership. It was tangible.
Exactly what happened to me. Saw one fly by on a road trip back in 1996 and I loved the car ever since.
TDIB: "The 93 Dodge Viper is the most dangerous sports car ever"
Lancia Stratos: "Are you sure about that?"

Also the 930 911 Turbo, it was even dubbed the widow maker if I remember correctly.
@@mwmmatt1 993 GT2 was the widow Maker too
Don´t forget about th AC Cobra!
@@Alexnahar The Tuscan is probably one of the least dangerous TVRs. The Cerbera Speed 12 was pretty fucking bonkers. I believe the production road car was cancelled because the owner of TVR at the time took it for a drive and decided fuck no, even that is too dangerous for TVR. There's actually one or two of them still around, I believe.
The Typhon is also pretty fucking bonkers. Saw a guy driving one about 10 year ago...in the snow...right at a junction where a land rover had crashed and took out a traffic light and most people were deciding to just not fucking drive.
The balls on that dude probably had their own gravity.
When I was a kid in the 90s, I dreamed of owning a viper and a H1...
2020: still a few dollars short to owning both of them

*ba dum tss*
Yeah 2, 5cyl volvos racing each other because the viper has a v10 right? Hilarious.
Or a UPS truck delivering packages at an extremely high rate of speed.
I was a teenager in 92 when these came out. I remember the owner of the local Dodge dealership bought his son one of these for his first car at 16 years old. Needless to say,he totaled it within 48 hours of getting it.
As is tradition
Chris Munsey my god... thinking of it now, a 16 year old getting a manual V10 sports car with no T/C, S/C, ABS, nothing to prevent the stupid mistakes teenagers make. I mean I’m 18 with a 2000 Civic, got it at 17, even for it being slower than a Miata it’s very easy to get in trouble with it. Can’t imagine someone younger than me with a damn near supercar as his first car.
That "Father" should've been arrested for endangering the welfare of a child. LOL Not a smart decision giving a 16yr old basically a Supercar at the time!! Geez!
@@francobnyc it's not endangering a child. The son just was being stupid at the wheel and crashed it.
@@moparmanicgarage I was being sarcastic. So basically you're putting ALL the blame on the 16yr old not the father!!!?? I put all or at least 80-90% of the blame on the father not the kid. Sixteen year olds crash Civics, Corollas, Sentras, etc etc. cars with a quarter the power of that Viper. I definitely think it was an Extremely, Extremely Stupid, Negligent decision on the father.
It's amazing how well vipers age, hideous wheels aside. A 1st gen viper still looks pretty fresh 20+ years later considering it's age, that's a real achievement.
The wheels are amazing!!
Dude it has the coolest wheels ever! And they fit the car so damn well!
The first and ‘second’ gen Viper look better than anything new. Beastly, yet sensuous. You just don’t get that with all the hideous Asian influenced styling today.
When I see a gen 1 Viper, I always think of the tv show "Viper". I loved that show, not because of the acting or story, but because of the car.

I love my Gen 1 Viper (1995). Reliable, attention-getting and fun. Without all the expensive electronics (windows, ABS, etc.) it hasn't been a money pit (with the exception of tires).
I had one..A 93...It was a hand full to drive that's for sure. Always had to make sure your tire pressures were good. I think it's one of the most beautiful and sexy sportscar designs of all time. The name and the looks go hand-in-hand so well.
The Dodge dealership in my hometown had one in 94 I believe. I was viper crazy as a little kid and my dad took me up there just to look at it.
There's a dealership in WI here, Kalscheur Dodge in Cross plains..they may yet still have their '93 I think it is..red one. I recall them relating to me how they took it out and drove it occasionally. Lean on it just a bit.. 1st gear, 2nd gear, shift into 3rd, "Holy crap, we're going 110!"

The viper is such a unique car. I literally can never think of any other car like it. Sure corvette’s are similar but a corvette compared to a viper just makes a corvette seem regular lol. The viper is just that insane of a car all around.
See I dont get offended when someone says they're similar but it kinda offends me when someone ask if my vipers a Corvette, I see so many corvettes a day it's more common than mustang honestly
Syntronz Remixx they’re similar in some ways, front engine, rear wheel drive, American sports cars. But a viper is just so much wilder. Corvettes are just the common mans sports car. A viper is a death wish lol.

Huge Viper fan here! I love the fact that you have to know what you are doing while driving one. Probably i will never own one (maintaining a Viper in Germany is very expensive and there are not many mechanics around who can deal with it) but it's one of my dream cars.

Growing up in the 90's I always loved these cars. When I was 10 I was lucky enough to catch a ride in one. Family friend owned a detail shop and was good friends with the viper owner. My dad set it up and surprised me when he took me to the shop. What a thrill for me as child. Definitely lit the flame to my addiction with cars.
Dude. Great video. Very much enjoyed it, and the drive. Thanks.
Look at all the cars we drove in back in the 40's 50's, 60's 70's and so on. Those cars didn't even have seat belts, and had metal dash boards. No power steering, no power brakes and more. And we loved em. I still want this Dodge Viper and have been looking for one. Best part is ....... they're cheap .... AND .... you can actually work on them yourself.

Only as dangerous as the driver. I've driven lots of 440 powered Mopes from 84-2000 even in Wisconsin winters..when they weren't yet worth a gold mine and had only a few slide offs. A lil care and quality tires and accidents..amazingly..go down :) lol
Don’t forget about the recall. The steering racks were coming loose from the frame. I did about 15 of them. We had to weld on a support on the frame. Man it was fun to test drive those things!!!
I remember seeing one at a dealer in Memphis when they first launched. Rode in a 95 Special Edition Emerald Green Viper back 25 years ago(I was 8 y.o.) in the dead middle of winter with the top off doing over 100 mph on the snow and ice. Always wanted one and maybe one own one.

Love first gen vipers, I just recently bought one and can't wait to get it home.
Great review, you described the Gen 1 / Gen 2 Viper driving experience perfectly! It’s exactly why you rarely see high mileage vipers as they are crashed because the rear-end breaks loose so easily with the car making almost all its torque below 3,000 RPM... Plus it’s a “front mid-engine” car which makes the torque to the rear-wheels feel completely different than any other car... You really need to drive one to understand and ultimately respect the car...
My car looks so good in this video! I have watched it over and over again! Thank you so much David.

So it was a real sports car.
And no abs.

1991tommygun definitely!
Dealership in Norwalk, CT got two the first year. Sold them for three times the $54k sticker. Used to occasionally see them out in my hometown of New Canaan. Such unique cars that stood out in a crowd of Italian, German and English exotics! Still love that first generation.
Worked for a Dodge dealer as parts manager in San Diego in 1992-1995 Went to see the Viper unveiling in LA. Got signed copies of blue prints and original materials at that event. Still have them in the closet. Also went back to the dealership and ordered a front Viper Snake head Front ornament. Still have that in the original package. Hopeing someday worth some good coin.
“How much driver mod would you say is needed with this car?”
*”Yes”*
My Dad has a 94 rt/10 this is a spot on review on how crazy is driving this car.
That awesome video!
Love Vipers! I find Vipers especially the older ones for some reason sound like a JDM V6. Wish the wheels were more modern and bigger. Great vid!

Viper: True American hero.
😂
I always loved the Dodge Viper (but not the newer ones). I first saw the Viper as a concept car at the Minneapolis Auto Show in the 90's and fell in love with it. Then someone told me about the Plymouth Prowler and I switched focus. I bought the Prowler instead and still have my 1999 Plymouth Prowler and I constantly get the looks like you did @ 07:54 The only problems I've had with my Prowler was [both} window regulators had to be fixed. Other than that, "nothing" else wrong. I love it. !! :) But now .... after watching this video, I think I'll buy a Viper and add it to my garage. :)
I love the sound of this car for the same reason I love the sound of the Nissan Z/Infiniti G. It doesn’t sound like your typical car; it’s still loud, proud, and powerful AF. This car’s sound is so raw, I LOVE IT!
I think RCR summed it up best when he said, "Dodge Viper, a car that makes wives grab their Bibles and husbands grab their DICKS."
Well fuckin said sir 👌🏼
The entire hood opens off like a Saab 900
😂😂😂😂
Yes
DoubleEdge90 RCR is dumb as hell.
I remember when I was 15 my classmate’s dad had a 2008 Viper bright green. When my friend was getting picked up the viper was blasting Accept Balls to the Wall
"Ya gotcher balls to the wall, man!!!" Ahaha, my cousin used to crank that cassette tape..yup, lol in his '73 Charger, that and Ratt, on the way to a job we had together. my car was a '71 Satellite 2 dr painted to look like Daisy Duke's roadrunner & had a '74 cop 440 & 3.55 sg rear, 727 torque-flite trans. His charger only had a 318, but was in nicer shape, metal flake blue & Cragar SS wheels, lol.
Viper! I've never had the privilege of driving one, I'm quite sure I'd love it.
They're captivating af to look at & listen to.
My dream car since I was 5. Had a 94 for 3 years and survived, now have an 06 coupe. It's like a completely different car, love them both
