@@MV-ri7zu 6000 rpm _is_ high revving, regardless of how routine it is nowadays! As Harry Ricardo put it in his 1923 book on the matter, an engine becomes "high speed" when the dynamic forces on the components becomes the dominant design consideration and when effective heat transfer becomes a necessity too as the cycle rate increases. That's as opposed to simply withstanding pressure and temperature, or being the correct shape and size and strong enough to hold itself up etc. High speed engines are light and stiff, then, rather than stout and sturdy. Obviously there's a huge continuum between something like a Honda generator and one of their MotoGP engines, but they are still more similar in design to each other than either is to something like a container ship engine.

I remember many years ago, my buddy and I were in a pretty heavily modified Evo 9 MR (it beat super-charged Vettes all day) and we got the chance to race an SRT10 Viper. On the third honk, we floored it and I remember kind of ducking down because of this sudden horrendous noise. It sounded like the Viper had blown its engine. We had gotten to well over 100 Mph when we began slowing down. My friend and I were both looking behind us for the smoking remnants of that V10 engine, but we couldn't see any. Finally we saw the Viper slowing down about 25 car-lengths in front of us. We chatted with the guy a bit. He said that they race this particular car and, at sea level and on race gas, it's a tad over 1000HP.

I bought this car a month ago and I could not be happier. Interestingly, this particular Viper is extra special. Not only is it one of 100 VOI.9 examples, it also has the super rare Mopar Performance Option that added Belanger headers (as Tedward noted), full high-performance exhaust, a much hotter camshaft ("lope noted by Ted), an aggressive ECO tune, along with other modifications. There were 9 such cars built and output is estimated ~650-675hp (vs 510 in a "normal 2006 Viper). I plan to dyno it in the spring. Arrow/Prefix worked with Dodge to juice a few of the last Gen 3's to keep the excitement up before (600hp) Gen 4s made their debut 18 months later. There were no 2007 Vipers so this is why Dodge gave the unusual OK to add a factory-endorsed performance option (vs a cosmetic/paint only variant). This car is a beast and I feel very lucky and happy to be its next owner!

Imagine what the Viper could've been if Dodge showed it even an ounce of the dedication and care that GM gave to the Corvette and Camaro Z-models. Dodge consistently produced a car that was raw, unsafe, more expensive, less refined, and less technologically equipped than the Corvette for a significantly higher price. Looking at the interior and electronics of the Viper, it never evolved beyond 1990s kit-car interior quality and electronics -- which is utterly wild, given the incredible success Oreca and Zakspeed saw in the late 90s/early 2000s in professional motorsport. There is absolutely zero excuse for Dodge (and Ford, with the Ford GT) to have not been able to deliver a sportscar that competed with the Corvette for the same sticker price as a Corvette. There is absolutely zero excuse for Dodge and Ford to not have produced Corvette-price competitive sportscars in the Ford GT and the Viper. I love how the 5th gen Viper perfectly combined the best design elements of the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gen Viper into a single design. If I win the lottery, the 5th gen Viper (in ACR trim, of course) is near the top of my list (right alongside the 4th gen ACR).
That is one of the best, if not *THE* best and most honest reviews of the Viper I've seen. I've been so lucky as to see the Vipers at Le Mans from '96 through to 2015 and at the Spa 24hrs since '96 as well. Rarely have I seen a more hardcore racing GT. And indeed, that sound, that sound.... 👌🏻

When you talked about the amount of effort to put in to driving the car, you hit the nail on the head. I’ve owned a 1st generation Viper for a few years now and it’s unbelievable how engaging it is. If you haven’t yet, I highly recommend you drive one. If you think that pedal box on the Gen 3 is weird, the Gen 1 is even more cramped to the point where they didn’t even try to fit a dead pedal. There are no windows, no exterior door handles, traction control, ABS. Just the V10 with a hot sounding cam, 6 speed, and massive tires.
I got to sit in a 2nd gen. I wouldn't be able to wear my boots to drive it because the pedals are so close together, i couldn't press just the brake, or just the gas. That's how tight the pedal box is

As someone from New Zealand where we absolutely adore our JDM cars and aren't phased by muscle cars, this cars insane. This Viper is merely a muscle car and that engine bay is the best factory one I've ever seen on ANY car.
I got to ride in one of the prototype vipers back in the early 90's, my friends Dad was a high up guy at Chrysler and had it one day. The dash had all kinds of test wiring and modules hooked up. That thing hugged the road so nicely, it was quite the ride. Cars have developed way beyond that now but at that time it was something else and I was only 15 so it blew me away. I didnt know a lot about them at the time so I dont know exactly what model it was, it looked like the original release in red though.
One of my friends has a 1993 Viper that is a real rocket. Sadly, it’s NOT a pleasant car to drive. I’ve driven it many times and I really hesitate to call it a proper sports car because it’s just so big and bulky and is very tail happy. The ride quality could best be described as “punishing”. The 10 cylinder is a monster, but it sounds like the truck engine that it is, it sure doesn’t sing like a Miura or a 365gtb/4. Over the years I had sort of forgotten about these early influences but somehow watching this managed to bring back those memories and remind me how I was unknowingly a Dodge Viper fan as a child lol
I also had a 1/24 scale model of the GTS-R produced by Maisto, before to have played with a Viper in "Test Driver 6"
The games were a big influence but for me I think the TV show "Viper" was probably the thing that converted me to a lifelong Viper fan, even if I had sort of forgotten about it over the years. Watching this video definitely brought back that pure giddiness and those fond memories that only a Viper could inspire.
Test Drive, completely forgot about that game😁
Lol, same. Forgot all about them until a co worker took me for a ride in his first gen Viper... needless to say I bought one last year because of it. Pure 90s awesomeness.

It may not be a high revving screamer of an engine but man does that 8.3L sounds gooood.
Its low revs made it very reliable in endurance racing.
High revving is overrated 6000-7000rpm is plenty
@@identiticrisis No it isnt 8000rpm is high revving for the typical 500cc +-100cc per cylinder engine found in cars. If my fkin bone stock 1991 volvo 740 revs to 6500 stock then thats definitely not high revving lmao.
@@identiticrisis youre missing the context here. We are talking about high rpm when it comes car engines not motorcycles not ships not generators.

Omg thats some power

I've owned my Gen 3 Viper for almost a year now. I was initially on the fence, but I could not be happier with my decision. Always an amazing time to drive, demands attention, and we'll likely never see anything like it again. This video doesn't do it justice :)

This is simply my favorite car ever built in the history of mankind, this video should be one hour long
I bought this car a month ago and I could not be happier.
Congrats!! I knew something was special here
@@TedwardDrives Thanks, I am enjoying the heck out of it. Your video is spectacular, btw. Clearly, you're a talented driver. Since this is the first Viper I have owned, could you dive a bit deeper re: how you felt this example drove/performed versus a "normal" gen 3? To me, it seems like a (very fun) handful. But as you correctly commented, all Vipers are nanny-free!
Lucky you. Hope you enjoy it till the end of this world.
Now that you mention it how much torque does the viper have with all the upgrades 650 - 675 hp
@@Kingofdestruction2019 well the 645hp 2017 viper has 600 torque so my guess would be my Arrow Viper is in the 610-650 tq range. Plan to dyno it next year.

Yikes ! Massachusetts, I was so happy the day I moved out of there. I actually lived in Waltham for a few years. I haven't been back to Mass. and hope I never have to come through there again.

if I might make a suggestion for videos of performance vehicles, I love the shots you do of pushing the car, the accelerations, the cornering, the sounds. I'd love to see more of that.
Neat
All those points are exactly why I bought the 2nd gen. It's part of the death wish experience.
Driving that thing has to be a whole body experience, you probably feel that engine in your chest when you get on it.

Will it to me pls
I got to sit in a 2nd gen. I wouldn't be able to wear my boots to drive it because the pedals are so close together, i couldn't press just the brake, or just the gas.
That's how tight the pedal box is
Winding through the gears on the backroads in this is just prefect. I know you only get so much time with the car but I'd easily watch 30 minutes of just that.

No way!
That exhaust note!!! The original Viper was certainly up there as a “Widow Maker”, much like the RUF Yellowbird.
It’s a car made for driving very fast in a straight line, it’s not a car for winding roads. The later model Vipers were much better, like the one in this video.
