One of the funniest stories was from a very good friend's mother and grandmother. Ratt was playing a concert in Jackson, MS sometime in 1987. My friend's grandmother and mother were staying at the same hotel as the band because the grandmother had an early morning procedure at a local hospital. Anyway, the band got onto the elevator with the mother and grandmother. They were so nice, making small talk and making sure the ladies were ok. When the ladies got home, they were telling my friend and me about their time with Ratt. Grandma ended it with "such nice boys"! So every time I hear anything about Ratt, I always think "such nice boys".

The older man and "older woman" who left the dining room early in the music video, were both portrayed by Milton Berle. He was one of the biggest stars in the early years of television, and was known as "Mr. Television", because the number of televisions in the US in 1949 doubled, from 1 million sets, to 2 million sets, because everyone wanted to watch his highly-popular comedy-variety TV series "The Texaco Star Theater" on NBC. Milton Berle's TV show aired from 1948 to 1956, and Elvis Presley appeared twice on his show during the program's final season in 1956. Berle appeared in numerous films and TV series in the ensuing years. Milton Berle's nephew was the manager for Ratt, and arranged for him to appear in this music video, and in the music video for Ratt's song, "Back For More". Milton Berle passed away in 2002, at the age of 93.

Glad you hit on Milton in the video. The age of golden oldie comedians of our time are slipping away but, their history of "greatness" is well preserved thanks to the Internet. Red Skelton, Milton Berle, Rodney Dangerfield, Buddy Hackett, Carol Burnett, Tim Conway....man, the list is so long and gave way to greats like Robin Williams, Richard Pryor, George Carlin, etc.

Loved this song! RATT was underrated and not appreciated enough, if you ask me. The old man at the dinner table was Milton Berle -- an iconic comedian and actor whose career spanned 80 years. He was the uncle of RATT's manager and was in two of RATT's music videos and did them for free. Thanks for the reaction!

Ratt was one of the bigger bands back at that point. “Wanted Man”, “You’re in Love”, “Lay it Down”... these were huge hits!! Jake E. Lee from Ozzy Osbourne’s band originally played with them when they were known as Mickey Ratt. Carlos Cavazo from Quiet Riot played with them recently. Warren DeMartini (the main guitarist) was like Siamese Twins with George Lynch from Dokken. Check out his multiple-layered vibrato at the end. Fantastic!! RIP to Robbin Crosby who, at one time, dated Tawny Kitaen, David Coverdale’s (from Whitesnake) wife. In fact, she’s on two of Ratt’s album covers and in a video... Shout to Stephen Pearcey, the singer, who’s battling cancer now. RIP to Milton Berle, who played old man AND played his own wife!! Great band during a great era!! Thanks, Rob Squad!!

Yes! More hair metal! This band is just one of many to emerge from the LA metal scene in the 80's. Although Round and Round was their biggest hit, you gotta hear Back for More, Lay it Down, Way Cool Jr., Dance Dance Dance, and Wanted Man. The band is: Stephen Pearcy - vocals, Warren DiMartini - guitar (the dark haired one through the floor), Robbin Crosby - guitar (RIP), Juan Croucier - Bass guitar, and Bobby Blotzer - drums. Unfortunately, the band is a shadow of it's former self, as of late. Only 2 original members are still in the band. But what a ride!

Ratt was one of the biggest hair metal bands of the 80's. Definitely in the top ten along with Motely Crue, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Twisted Sister, Ozzy, ACDC, Scorpions, Poison, WASP, Bon Jovi, and Cinderella. There were literally hundreds of hair metal bands in the 80's. One of the reasons it died in the 90's was because it was so over-saturated with cookie cutter clones.

Iron Maiden, ACDC, Priest... not "hair bands". Long hair didnt equal "hair band"... otherwise Metallica and Megadeth would be hair bands. Twisted Sister, despite having a lead singer with makeup and big poodle hair, was not a hair band either.. they were closer in spirit to Motorhead.. a grimy, agressive, fast rock band full of ugly dudes. "Hair bands" were specifically "Glam bands", mostly from the sunset strip in LA... so yeah Ratt, Crue, Poison and Quiet Riot were in that group.

Two things: There were enough Hair Bands and metal bands that MTV did a 4 hour show weekly for them called Headbanger's Ball. Yes, I watched it religiously.
Two. I saw Ratt once and found the singer to be the greatest person ever! I've gone to a lot of shows at this point and never understood why people would throw their drinks. It's such a waste of money and dangerous for the band. Well, a guy threw a beer, Stephen pointed the guy out, continues his song. A bit later another beer is thrown. Stephen walks off stage. The band continues to play the intro to a song (sorry I don't remember what song) . Stephen comes out after they play the intro nearly 10 times, they finish the song. When the song was over, Stephen explained that it is not okay to get his equipment wet and that the guy has been escorted out of the building, "He's just lucky I don't take his girlfriend too." Or something along those lines. I laughed so hard! The band, especially Stephen, went up a few notches in my favorite bands list after that.

The "hair metal" genre existed simultaneously alongside a thriving underground American rock scene. The former would have included bands like this, Motley Crue, Def Leppard, Poison, Warrant, Dokken, Winger and the latter bands like R.E.M., The Replacements, Husker Du, The Smithereens, 10,000 Maniacs, Camper Van Beethoven. Older bands and artists from the 60's and 70's were still active, but the newer bands had younger audiences and seemed more like the next big thing. The metal bands had more support from mainstream radio and recording companies, while the underground bands were creating a support system from college audiences and independent labels, and what would become alternative rock. Both of these genres were somewhat subsumed by the breakthrough of Nirvana and grunge, because that music was as rocking as anything hair metal had done, but seemed like a hipper version of it that acknowledged that punk had happened. Honestly, there was a lot of great music in all those fields, and I never saw any reason to have to choose sides or anything.

For all their masculine swagger, a lot of 80s "hair metal" bands were often criticized for "dressing up like girls", so it was extremely savvy of Ratt to have Milton Berle in the video, who was a comedian and early TV pioneer who used to dress in drag during his show (he plays the guy in the tux AND the woman who both leave after the first verse).
Of course, Ratt having Berle's nephew as a manager at the time didn't hurt, either. :)
Man, you're hitting all of 1984's high points recently- Thompson Twins, Go-Go's, RATT, "Jump"-era Van Halen- next up (maybe for Female Friday), "The Warrior" by Scandal (if you watch "Glow" on Netflix, this is the song that opens each episode).

To clarify, there's several comments claiming Ratt had "tons of hits". This was their only big hit on the Billboard Hot 100 (#12). "Lay It Down" just barely cracked the top 40. (Bon Jovi, by comparison, had 8 songs in the top 10 from 1986-89.)
Ratt did, however, have 7 or 8 songs chart in the top 40 on the Mainstream Rock chart. That chart was introduced in 1981 because Top 40 radio stations began to favor more Pop music. So the Mainstream Rock chart could gauge airplay on specifically "rock" radio stations.
Also, I realize comedy is subjective, but in my opinion Milton Berle was never funny. He was an old vaudeville type comedian who happened to be around at the dawn of TV when there were only like 10 tv shows. 😀

So here is what is sorely over looked when referring to "hits". Ratt, at their core, were a heavy rock band. Not metal, but heavy rock. And heavy rock bands rarely have had "hits" on the Billboard Hot 100 singes charts. Pop radio wasn't playing bands like Ratt and Motley Crue etc for the most part back then. Yes those bands had a breakthrough "hit" every once in a while on the pop charts, but their music wasn't geared toward a "pop" audience in the way that Michael Jackson or Hall & Oates songs were. The more accurate way to evaluate Ratt's success, and bands like them, is to look at album sales, and concert tours. Ratt's debut album went Triple Platinum. Their 2nd album went Double Platinum. And their 3rd and 4th albums went Platinum. Even their 5th album which came out in the 90's went Gold. And Ratt headlined arena's and coliseums on 3 straight albums/tours starting in 1985. Ratt were absolutely a seminal hard rock band from the 80's. If you don't understand this, you either weren't around at the time, or you weren't paying attention, or you just weren't very smart.

One of the biggest bands of the 80s. The Ratt-Poison tour was huge.
Check out "Dance, Dance, Dance" and "You're in Love", two of their MTV hits.

My son loved the hell out of this cut/video when he was a toddler, whenever it played on MTV, he would stop doing whatever he was doing and dance the cutest little bop to this. Thanks for the memories. In the 80's there was room for everybody, and Hair Bands were in abundance, along with every other genre; new wave, mod, ska, industrial, funk, romantic, house, dancehall, reggae, arena rock, heavy metal, imports, jazz, just to name a few.

I graduated in 82, and I can tell you that our generation had the best music ever! Everything from Alice Cooper to Frank Zappa ( neither of which have you done yet) and all points in between.
