Warren DeMartini is a very underrated guitarist. He doesn't get the recognition he deserves as a true badass. Stephen Pearcy is a great vocalist too. He has a unique voice when you hear it, you know exactly who it is. You mentioned "Lay It Down" which is a gritty, nasty song, but so many others on the Out of the Cellar album are so awesome. Lack of Communication, Back For More, and my personal favorite, Wanted Man are definitely worth a listen also.

Agreed. Not my favorite genre, but so many incredibly talented musicians get overlooked and under appreciated these days because hair metal is one of the only "retro" genres that is looked back upon as silly instead of cool, for most people. I would say Nu Metal has a similar situation, some really great musicians in some bands that just don't get any respect because the mainstream thinks the genre is not worthy of being looked at with rose colored glasses.
TRUE THAT, brother! George Lynch, Jake E. Lee, Vito Bratta, Akira Takasaki (Loudness) Reb Beach....to name a few. Cinderella was a great “hair metal” band.Try “ Somebody Save Me”, Shake Me”, “Don’t Know What You Got Til It’s Gone”, “Coming Home”, and “Nobody’s Fool”.
Yes, awesome 80's band. During that time in L.A. These were the bands playing the circuit. GnR, Ratt, Poison, Van Halen, Crue, Cinderella. They all knew each other and a lot of them partied with each other. Slash actually was hired by Poison but refused to do the "Glam Metal" look. In fact right before the audition he walked into a second hand store across the street, saw the stovepipe hat and well.....the rest is history.
The opening riff to "Lay It Down" used to literally give me chills... watching you guys react to it did it all over. When those drums kick in tho! LOL! Love you guys!
That guitar sound that you like is muted picking. The palm of the pick hand partially mutes the strings. Eddie Van Halen certainly uses this technique a lot. Steven Pearcy, the Ratt lead singer, has said they looked up to Van Halen.
Ratt was an arena band in the 80s... huge... people forget that. True they were influenced by Van Halen but many other bands, specifically Aerosmith. Aerosmith: Rats in the Cellar Ratt: Out of the Cellar Ratt has a ton of great songs. Some to check out: Wanted Man I'm Insane Lack of Communication Between the Eyes You're in Love
Never heard of Ratt before now.. so, thanks guys! I love Ratt! And am finding with your marathon that I'm getting more turned onto 80's stuff and dropping a previous prejudice i had for glam/80's/whatever. Awesome vid as always, guys! Love and peace out \m/
Wow! I've been begging for Ratt and gave up. You played the 1 "hit" from an album full of killer melodic metal tunes, but that's cool. Out of the Cellar and Invasion of Your Privacy are filled with awesome rock. MORE RATT! MORE RATT! 4 straight albums of grooving metal.
"...like disciples of Van Halen." LOL Yup, you just described about 80% of the 1980s metal scene, of which Warren Demartini (Ratt lead guitarest) is one of the *best* examples.
I've always thought that some of the most known bands had their own thing going on. Crue and Wasp had heavy metal, Bon Jovi had more pop, Cinderella had blues, Extreme had funk etc.
@@Rosario_Verano I can agree with every one of your band characterizations, but it doesn't diminish in the slightest the long and deep influence of VH over all of them. Nuno Bettencourt (of Extreme) has an extraordinary amount of EVH in him. So does Richie Sambora (Bon Jovi). Mick Mars (Motley Crue) dreamed of having some. Leff Labar (Cinderalla) too. They all did. Almost to the man (+ women, like Lita Ford).
@craig 22 Eddie just took it to a whole new level than Vittorio did. But I feel most musicians have someone that they learn from & are influenced by. Even the great Eddie Van Halen

Ratt is awesome. Warren DiMartini is way underrated. Juan Croucier lent so much with his backing vocals. Robin Crosby can kill at rhythm or lead. One of my favorite bands of the 80s.
The model on the cover of Out Of The Cellar is Tawny Kitaen, the same girl who appeard in Whitesnake's Here I Go Again video in 1987. She is also the "legs" on the cover of Ratt's debut EP from 1983. For whatever that bit of trivia is worth to you, lol. Oh, and the model on the cover of Invasion Of Your Privacy (1985) is Marianne Gravatte, who was Playboy magazine's Playmate of the Month for the October 1982 issue (38 years ago!!!??), then as the 1983 Playmate of the Year. She also appeard in the Lay It Down video.
Ratt was one of the most underrated hair bands of the 80's. They were more on the darker/sleazier side of the genre which didn't get as much mainstream airplay.
So sleazy! 😭 WASP too. But Ratt was really fun, they had that street vibe. I love how George felt them out and checked a couple more songs.. and they lit them on fire 😂
I'm very impressed at how quickly you guys noticed their guitar tone because that tone is precisely what sets ratt apart from the multitude of cheezy 80s rock bands. I grew up listening to 80s metal, but I cant really listen to much of it anymore, because very few of those bands have stood the test of time & Ratt is definitely one of the few that have. They are one of the few bands with a tone so original that you can listen to one note & know exactly who it is. Well spotted guys 👍
Not sure, but I think Panama and Round and Round were released at about the same time? Maybe Round and Round was out first? That said, Van Halen obviously had been around for several years and had a huge influence on all the 80's rock bands.
i looked it up, both songs/albums were released in 1984. Van Halen's 1984 came out in January of that year while Out of the Cellar came out in March, but i think Round and Round was released as a single prior to the album release.
Way Cool Jr is awesome as well. You really can't go wrong. RATT just has that style and are so consistent with those nasty riffs. I saw them live with Dokken it was my first concert and it was mind blowing!
Dimartini had some stylistic similarities with George Lynch (also one of my favorites), but definitely carved out his own niche. Very melodic player who used his shred abilities judiciously. Also a master of weaving major and minor patterns over chord progressions that made those kind of shifts. Lay it Down is a great example. Very memorable solo with simple yet catchy lines and reserved use of high speed phrasing.
My dudes - UA-cam recommends many reaction videos in my feed based on my history of watching yours. I've watched many of them and y'all are THE BEST in the business. It's so awesome to see people discover, appreciate, and often times fall in love with the music I've listened to for a large part of my 52 revolutions around the sun. Rock!
One of my favorite songs from growing up. I always felt I was a cool kid for loving RATT (and Dokken). You need to do some Tesla - Little Suzy or Modern Day Cowboy.
One last thing guys, lol, I actually really like the thing you did at the end where you listened to a couple snippets of other songs. That'd be cool if you did sort of a "Reaction To A Band" sort of video where you listened to a handful of the biggest requests to get the overall vibe. I understand many songs need their own video and reactions from top to bottom, but we need to be realistic, I thought the bit at the end of this video was really cool, and Honestly, for something like this Glam/Hair Metal Marathon, most songs are going to follow the basic Verse/Chorus/Verse/Chorus/Bridge/Chorus/Chorus Formula, including some sick solos of course, and some songs have some really dope parts, so I'm not knocking that, but what I'm saying is if you listen to the first 90 seconds you're going to get the vibe of 90% of the songs from this genre. Just a potential idea, especially if you do a poll or something where you have a handful of songs that people want that may spread a bunch of different vibes.
Check out Dokken - Don't Close Your Eyes, Dream Warriors, When Heaven Comes Down, Lightining Strikes Again, Lost Behind the Wall among many other great songs!
This may have been the song of theirs that crossed into pop/rock territory the most. It was certainly a great choice of song to introduce them to the masses during the summer of '84. I remember it being played on radio constantly, and it sounded like nothing I'd ever heard before. Plenty of their stuff is much heavier hitting, yet all of it is very listenable while also rocking. Underrated glam metal band, for sure. Just a ton of fun to listen to them!
@LF X , we could argue all day long about how to classify certain types of music and never come to an exact agreement about it. Nonetheless I agree that they are essentially a metal band. By "pop" I simply meant that I first heard this song on radio stations that played "popular" music - what was termed "Top 40" at the time, and I would say a variety of genres actually fell under the "popular music" designation. What's so wrong with that?
@@nancysmith8626 Correctly stated Nancy. Nice twin guitar(Thin Lizzyish), with uptempo riffy songs. So much fun to listen to today as was then. I'm a big fan, but would not classify Ratt as "heavy" metal. Too melodic and catchy for that description.
@@johnford3543 , huge fan here too. It's hard for me to classify Ratt because their music contains so many different elements - but all of it comes together perfectly to make some damn catchy, melodic rock.
My best friend had STARDOG as a personalized tag after hearing Mother Love Bone....and yeah being a teenager at this time was great...spurred such a love of guitar from this era
@@johnrhemphill So the album "out of the cellar" was released in March 1984. I assume they released the single "Round and Round" prior to the release date of the album. So that is likely why you remember hearing that song in late 1983. It's easy to double-check me. Atlantic Records released the album. I bet it's on the Rat Wikipedia page.
Ooooooh! Ratt is one of the first bands I got into as a kid in the 80s. Loving this! You need to do some WASP, boys! Blackie Lawless is a beast! Edit: I'm about to go listen to more Ratt and make it a favorite on spotify. Nice choice buddies.

I know both songs, and honestly man, Ratt is pretty fuckin lame dude, lol. My favorite song by them is probably You're In Love, and it's literally not even in my top 1,000 best rock songs.
@@djjazzyjeff1232 I ike 5-6 Ratt songs out of their entire catalogue so I'm not a big fan of their other stuff either however I don't think they're lame at all lol but you're entitled to your opinion so we'll agree to disagree :)
What made Ratt really special is they made it big and on to the radio with a metal rockin song, most bands from this time only got radio play with with ballads. Ratt never tried or used a ballad!!
Ratt's album "Out of the Cellar" is a masterpiece all the way through. You two should play the whole thing front to back. All killer no filler. While l can't prove it l think this album had significant influence on the Guns n' Roses "Appetite for Destruction" album.; another 80's hard rock masterpiece.
Ratt are one of the few metal bands from the 80's that I still love. Invasion of your Privacy is their best album for sure. Take a listen to songs from it.
I thought "heaviest matter in the universe" and your love affair with Gojira was the peak of this channel. Gotta say the looks our boy Warren got after he dropped the solo were right up there. That's how it goes with some of the "glam rock" bands...usually safe vocals, boring drums, root-note bass, and then...BAM!..guitar players carpet-bombing the whole scene. You guys are awesome thanks for everything.
You guys were dead on in your analysis of this song and Ratt. Of all the hair metal bands influenced by Van Halen, Ratt were the band that took that influence most seriously, and you can definitely hear it in the riffing. In fact, Lay It Down sounds rather similar to Unchained. For the all the shit that 80s hair metal receives, one undeniable fact is that the 80s were the golden age of phenomenal guitarists. Warren DeMartini was one of them, and extremely underrated. Beyond that, though, George Lynch, Steve Vai, Paul Gilbert, Vito Bratta, Nuno Bettencourt, Jason Becker, Michael Angelo Batio... even the more "mainstream" guys like Richie Sambora, CC Deville, and Mick Mars were excellent. BTW, you guys will really be missing out if you don't hear Whitesnake's Still of the Night and Warrant's Uncle Tom's Cabin. Two of the better songs from that era of bands.
solos yea, vocals and vocal.melodies, idk..i find them mostly predictable and overproduced. the harmonies on round and round are amazing and that gated reverb is perfectly placed, but in most songs i find the effects are needed so the vocal sits in the mix and it ends up feeling fake. he does have a nice way of singing in a pocket in the verses of round and round and lay it down, but the chorus melody and lyrics of lay it down suck imo. the chorus of round and round might be predictable, but i think it's great. between that and the guitar solo (duo really), i really think it's the best song of the genre

They all knew each other and a lot of them partied with each other. Slash actually was hired by Poison but refused to do the "Glam Metal" look. In fact right before the audition he walked into a second hand store across the street, saw the stovepipe hat and well.....the rest is history.
I think Cinderella was a little more than that. Like Tesla, there was a LOT of blues and soul in their sound.
Fire and ice was a seriously underrated song by them too
I love Don't Know What You Got Til It's Gone, awesome song.
Ratt - "Wanted Man" is another good one.
Back for More
Rob Rabionet and they mentioned the crue who are in the video for it.
Love Wanted Man. Just a tale of the old American West in hard rock style.
Wanted Man should be Ratts intro song as they step into the ring.
I still tease my son about his high school girlfriend leaving him to follow Ratt. 😂😂😂
This is the most 80’s shit I’ve heard in a while 😂
Was her named Denise?
My blunder I was thinking of my Aunt in Anaheim
Lol
Lol parenting done right 💯
Yo I'd leave anyone to follow Ratt in the 80s.
The opening riff to "Lay It Down" used to literally give me chills... watching you guys react to it did it all over. When those drums kick in tho! LOL! Love you guys!
Johnny Lawrence's go to band... Fear Does Not Exist In This Dojo!
Yes man. Miguel’s ringtone
CHeck out the RATT EP. Sweet Cheater - You Think Your Tough - Tell The World - Back For More . Raw AF and most RATT fans know what I am talkin' bout.
When this first came out, I listened to the album for DAYS. They were on FIRE!
That guitar sound that you like is muted picking. The palm of the pick hand partially mutes the strings. Eddie Van Halen certainly uses this technique a lot.
Steven Pearcy, the Ratt lead singer, has said they looked up to Van Halen.
Yep. Unlike lay it down which is drop d tuning, this song is in e standard tuning
David Ernst I thought this is half step down
@@charleskopievsky1245 maybe it is, I cant remember off the top of my head. I thought it was e standard not e flat but u may be right
@@charleskopievsky1245 you're right, I just grabbed my guitar it's in e flat
David Ernst yea I was gonna learn this song one day and it was in a different tuning so I just didn’t bother that’s how I remembered 🤣
If people don't like this song, they either liars or deaf 😂
Even rats like this song!
May also want to check out Tesla. Really underated. Modern day cowboy has a harder sound.
Yes! Tesla for sure.
Cumin atcha live
TESLA!! MODERN DAY COWBOY!!!!!
Yes! Modern Day Cowboy or Heaven’s Trail by Tesla.
Tesla might be the most underrated band from that era. Mechanical Resonance and The Great Radio Controversy are incredible albums.
Ratt was an arena band in the 80s... huge... people forget that. True they were influenced by Van Halen but many other bands, specifically Aerosmith.
Aerosmith: Rats in the Cellar
Ratt: Out of the Cellar
Ratt has a ton of great songs. Some to check out:
Wanted Man
I'm Insane
Lack of Communication
Between the Eyes
You're in Love
Me too! I've been DYING for them to react to RATT. They didn't disappoint, and got Lay it Down and What U give is what U get. Who would've thunk.
"...like disciples of Van Halen."
LOL Yup, you just described about 80% of the 1980s metal scene, of which Warren Demartini (Ratt lead guitarest) is one of the *best* examples.
@craig 22 By this logic, almost no one is original. Not the Beatles, not Hendrix, Zeppelin, nobody. I can dig it.
I remember cruising back in the days jammin this loud... good times.
“You’re in Love” is a staple Ratt song as well.
A guilty pleasure of mine. To. This. Day.
I don't understand why people label music as guilty pleasures. Either you like it or don't
The video to Round and Round is a classic. It features legendary actor Milton Berle playing the husband and wife roles.
His nephew was ratts mgr.
Yes 👍
Milton...so funny in that video :D
Actually from what I understand Stephen Pearcy was Milton Berle's nephew, that's how he convinced him to be in the video. Although I could be wrong.
Ratt always had a nice "Crunchy" sound with their guitars.
I saw them live on this tour. Warren and Robbin did a great dual solo. Awesome tone
There's just something undeniable about Ratt's best songs. I'm glad and not surprised they got it immediately.
What are their best? I love this song and would like some recs from them
Ratt's guitarist "Warren DeMartini" is a beast, much like "Chris DeGarmo" of Queensryche.
DeGarmo is in another league imo
@@DannyGadish both Italian. They, therefore, are equals.

This is one of the catchiest songs ever written.
A person doesn't even need to like rock, let alone metal - to get into this one.
Yea a black coworker of mine heard the song on a commercial and asked me about it. He mostly listens to hip hop but he said he loves the song
RATT and Marvin Gaye - “I Heard it Round and Round the Grapevine”
, by Bill Maclintock. Great Mashup xD
This.
YES! !!! Bill is the undisputed MASTER of the Mashup....I've heard that one, and it's actually really cool. I don't know what editing software he's using, but he has that shit down to a science!
I'm a subscriber to his channel and I enjoy what he does!
RATT is an acronym for Rockin All The Time. So it is all CAPS!
Most underrated 80's band is Y & T you need to react to this band that's still rockin after 45 years!
I am from India,Never heard of Ratt before but enjoyed it,Thank you.
@@midnite8729 WASP were insane..don't get the respect they deserve
Maybe it was because Warren DeMartini (Torch) was from San Diego, but KGB played Ratt heavily in the rotation. Never considered Ratt , underrated.
Ok guys here is one from Ratt. It has a blues kind of sound to it "Way Cool JR." You will love it.
I second that.
Way Cool Jr. is Warren’s best riff ever.
WCJ is a great song!
I was gonna mention it too, as a guitarist and lover of blues and rock/metal it's one of my favorites songs ever. I'd love to see them react to it.
Warren De Martini is probably one of the best from this era on guitar. Blue's player's and shredders alike love him. He has great groove.
Holy shit. Im just now realizing how close this is to Panama. Even in the vocal harmonies in "Panama" and "Round And Round"!
Not sure, but I think Panama and Round and Round were released at about the same time? Maybe Round and Round was out first? That said, Van Halen obviously had been around for several years and had a huge influence on all the 80's rock bands.
Same here. Heard both songs hundreds and hundreds of times, but never made that connection.
i looked it up, both songs/albums were released in 1984. Van Halen's 1984 came out in January of that year while Out of the Cellar came out in March, but i think Round and Round was released as a single prior to the album release.
the bridge (pre chorus) lines remind me of the chorus to the (later song) Battle Stations by Winger
Way Cool Jr is awesome as well. You really can't go wrong. RATT just has that style and are so consistent with those nasty riffs. I saw them live with Dokken it was my first concert and it was mind blowing!
This whole album is bangin guys
DiMartini was a young virtuoso, Ratt came on the scene swinging fot sure
Dimartini had some stylistic similarities with George Lynch (also one of my favorites), but definitely carved out his own niche. Very melodic player who used his shred abilities judiciously. Also a master of weaving major and minor patterns over chord progressions that made those kind of shifts. Lay it Down is a great example. Very memorable solo with simple yet catchy lines and reserved use of high speed phrasing.
That album you had posted in the back ground , That entire Album is badd asss
I wonder if they will get to some Scorpions. My favorite song is The Zoo. Simple but powerful.
Alien Nation is mine.
@Chicken Bubblegum
That's a good one, crazy world is another so is Hour 1.
@Chicken Bubblegum Make it Real is a great choice for them!
They need a week for The Scorpions. Too many great songs.
still living you, live would be great.
Have you seen the recent commercial where they have a “rat” infestation and it turns out to be the band Ratt playing in their living room?
Love that commercial. I actually watch it every time it's on TV.
It's a punny twist. Lol
That commercial made me feel old. I know they didn’t look like that when I saw them in concert. 😊
Yessssss hahahaha I Love It! Yet hate the other one where they have a clogging problem!
Collect that paycheck :D
Whitesnake - "Slow an' Easy"; or if you do another Ratt tune, definitely either "You're in Love" or "Wanted Man"
seconding the "you're in love". Lyrics are terrible but main riff is so damn catchy
Ahhh, There's nothing like David Coverdale's golden pipes!
RATT is soooo underrated! Their Greatest Hits is incredible!!
Off topic: But the Geico commercial with the "Ratt Problem" always makes me laugh.
Oh man how bad did Pearcy look....oof.
so if a man rap your daughter are you gonna call the man who report it at the cops *A RAT*
JP 93 at least he didn’t put on 50 lbs!
You have to do "Lay It Down" It has one of the most iconic guitar riffs ever...based off of the main riff of Van Halen's "Panama", lol ;)
They just did. Lol! Finish the video.

Invasion of your privacy was one of my favorite albums.
Great White "house of broken love" bluesy guitars great vocals ...great song and very underrated band.
Omg yes! They totally need to do that song at some point!
The whole Out of the Cellar album is kick ass. Try 'Back for More'. DeMartini howls on every song.

The woman in the cover album is Tawny Kitaen she just passed away.
Everybody was clowning on Ratt for the longest time, but the truth is they rock.
One of my favorite songs from growing up. I always felt I was a cool kid for loving RATT (and Dokken).
You need to do some Tesla - Little Suzy or Modern Day Cowboy.
Damn I love Modern Day Cowboy
"Lay It Down" is another badass song from RATT. Dokken is the same genre: "Just Got Lucky" would be cool.
They covered it in this video towards the end🎉⭐
Ratt goes in a different direction in Way Cool Junior. Probably my fav.
I’ve always thought this was one of the coolest choruses. His vocal tone and style just fits it so well. It’s catchy but not in a bad way at all.
Yup I like it a lot too. Not flat at all
One last thing guys, lol, I actually really like the thing you did at the end where you listened to a couple snippets of other songs.
Gotta put in for "Way Cool JR" from Ratt. Song is dirty.
Check out Dokken - Don't Close Your Eyes, Dream Warriors, When Heaven Comes Down, Lightining Strikes Again, Lost Behind the Wall among many other great songs!

Ratt has always had the respect of musicians. Great songs and great talent that still holds up today.
Beautiful and wonderful time when I was a teen in the 80s listening to this album.
My best friend had STARDOG as a personalized tag after hearing Mother Love Bone....and yeah being a teenager at this time was great...spurred such a love of guitar from this era

Interesting note: round and round was released in March 1984 less then two months after the song Panama from van halen was released in Jan. 1984.
Actually I had the 1984 album in the fall of 83, I was in 7th grade.
I was listening to round and round in 1983
@@johnrhemphill So the album "out of the cellar" was released in March 1984. I assume they released the single "Round and Round" prior to the release date of the album. So that is likely why you remember hearing that song in late 1983. It's easy to double-check me. Atlantic Records released the album. I bet it's on the Rat Wikipedia page.

Do RATT's "Way Cool Junior". Such a great groove.
@@johnlynde2 I agree
Well said, but there were a lot of great riffs, from the cream of these bands!
They were not fond of the Warrant song. They've done it already. But some good suggestions.

Ratt has TONS of great songs, as does Dokken.
uh, they have cool guitar riffs..
stk Yes, and catchy melodies, great vocals and great solos.
solos yea, vocals and vocal.melodies, idk..i find them mostly predictable and overproduced. the harmonies on round and round are amazing and that gated reverb is perfectly placed, but in most songs i find the effects are needed so the vocal sits in the mix and it ends up feeling fake. he does have a nice way of singing in a pocket in the verses of round and round and lay it down, but the chorus melody and lyrics of lay it down suck imo. the chorus of round and round might be predictable, but i think it's great. between that and the guitar solo (duo really), i really think it's the best song of the genre
stk It’s a great song, but not even close to the best song in the genre. It’s not even Ratt’s best song, but to each his own.
stk Don’t even. Dokken is and was a phenomenal band.
Yall need some " Uncle Tom's Cabin " by Warrant and " Shake Me " by Cinderella.
