    • @TMATDP
      @TMATDP 8 років тому +18

      +Human Observer I think they're all equal in their roles when carrying the band. Maynards voice isn't quite as strong as it once was, but it's matured - it's softer now, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. To me, his lyrics are unparalleled. Also, don't forget Justin; practically rewrote the book on playing bass. They're all incredible.

      i am studying music for a living now... and i saw them around this time... maybe a little bit before... and i'm glad i did. that being said, i came to the shows right after lateralus was released and i was slightly disappointed that maynard was going through his "i'm a black shadow" visual phase, and you could tell the scream-sing parts had become more singing than screaming. there were parts where he would break through, but for instance on a song like stinkfist it is obvious. like someone said earlier, that's just life. i was born a smidge too late to see them in what i personally think was their prime of 96-00. hell i was just a kid when i saw the shows i did. watching this and a '98 show confirms that i wasn't crazy or hearing things... you can just only scream for so long even if it's melodic as maynard's. RIP maynard's scream.

      My mate lent me Aenima about 2 weeks before they toured Adelaide, Australia in about 1997... We were about 15. I listened to it maybe once or twice and my tiny brain must have just been too blown to understand what i was hearing. Compared to grunge it just seemed weird timing and all strange sounds. There were still tickets, and I was like, nah i'm good. They went and still talk about it to this day... Kill me now. (seen them about 6 times since!! Including this tour)

      It's been a while since I've looked, but I'm pretty sure this is the song that talks about Saturn in astrology, which returns 29/30 after you're born - pretty big transition period for most. Here, most of us either sink or swim, in life from this point on. We sink if we don't let go of control, of old habits and paradigms...when we let go of it all, we're freed. Regardless, Saturn will teach us whether we're willing to learn or not.
      I believe there are also references to the crown, or the crown chakra and the Tree of Life in Kabbalah.

    Thank you, and TOOL, for making this available. Lateralus is literally getting me through my PTSD of repressed memories from when I was a 13 yr old girl and how much it has FUCKED my lifeup. Watching MJK literally embody his artwork in performance has left me speechless. My hubs and I were literally having the babies when this album came out. He'd seen them live when Opiate came out, lucky shit, but I had yet the ability to see my favorite artists live. Thankfully Fear Inoculum showed up; kids in college...finally saw them in November 2019 before the world exploded. With the 1st album TOOL entered my life when I was younger and NEEDED these words and music more than I knew. Raised Catholic,studied opera and theater, now an 'ol gothmom...their skill, mastery of their art and sense of humor have helped me survive my time on this planet. Danny Carey made my son want to be a better drummer ..* single tear*, and MJK my spectrum gifted son a better artist through words..then images.
