- Maynard James Keenan (born James Herbert Keenan; April 17, 1964) is an American singer, songwriter, musician, record producer, actor, and winemaker. He is best known as the singer and primary lyricist of the rock bands Tool, A Perfect Circle, and Puscifer.
Originally from Ohio, Keenan spent his high school and college years in Michigan. He joined the U.S. Army after graduating from high school. After leaving the Army, he attended the Kendall College of Art and Design in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He relocated to Los Angeles in 1988 to pursue a career in interior design and set construction, and formed Tool with Adam Jones shortly thereafter.
In addition to his music career, Keenan owns Merkin Vineyards and Caduceus Cellars in Arizona, where he resides. Since rising to fame, he has been noted as a recluse, although he does emerge to support charitable causes and for the occasional interview. He has also ventured into acting.

He’s let many people. He just seems to prefer a person he’s comfortable with rather than a random stranger with a microphone. Like joe rogan, David cross and that one girl from the fifth element.

Unfortunately, there was the Guy Fiero and Sammy Hagar interview, tho. Those two clowns did ZERO research beforehand. MJK handled it well, particularly when he told Guy he was gonna smack him for touching the vines!

Wow he mentioned Siousxie Siou as a melody inspiration. That woman needs the attention she deserves. It’s good to hear her name from someone like Maynard.

Rick is a different interviewer than what artists have to put up with. Rick is not a journalist who has to do an interview with an artist he doesn’t like, or one that is full of himself, is provoking artists to get quotes to sell magazines or intentionally misquotes trying to cause a shitstorm for publicity.
Rick is a musician himself and genuinely cares about the people he interviews and their art. It shows. And the artists see that. And then they let their guard down, because he is not one of the vultures they usually get.
Rick asks a good question and lets the interviewee talk. Simple as that. So many so-called interviewers can't seem to do it.

Rick is asking the questions he would like to know and he's interested in knowning how his peers approach music. Result is amazing interviews.

An expert interview. He let the guest talk - no interruptions, and did not force topics. Well done.
Maynard isn’t just phenomenal song writer and singer, he’s an inspirational human being who doesn’t buy into the stereotypical ‘rock star’ life style. He does his own thing, he focuses on his passions regardless of how that sits with his music persona. He comes across as a confident, thoughtful, intelligent man who doesn’t have the usual demons many in his profession have battled with. Maynard and his music have been truly inspirational to me personally, given me strength in hard times and the confidence to follow my passions. Excellent interview Rick, cheers man.
When he was entering the 'rock star' lifestyle he was really into it. In the sense of depraved sex, narcissism and the latter. He talked about it a few times about it all coming on so fast and not knowing how to deal with it. The only reason the music existed, was because of said demons.
Thankfully he's chilled out during the years into the fine intelligent man you speak of.
Touring and singing that long is he was a typical rockstar, he'd be dead, or his voice would be messed up. Thank God he knows enough how to take care of his incredibly delicate instrument - he even doesn't eat many hours before a show to maintain his sound. He cares more about his art than his personal preference to fk around as many stars moved into. He is quite an impressive artist and human. And he acknowledges that.

I love Tool. First saw them in 1993 at Lollapalooza. Dozens and dozens of shows since including leaving the US twice to see multiple shows in Europe and South America. I just bought tickets to see them play again in October. Maynard is a prick. I wouldn't want to meet him even if given the chance.
Rick has made his bones in music and those he interviews get that. He asks questions that a musician would ask and then subtly mixes in a few questions that a friend would ask...it's just brilliant. Best interview of MJK I've ever seen...
i will second that. MJK is usually a bit clandestine. To see him so at ease here is amazing.

I love that Maynard mentions Siouxsie Sioux as an inspiration for good melody writing. She and the Banshees are so underrated and don't get the recognition that they are due.
I've seen many people mentioning how good she is here in the comments. I'm gonna check her out. I stumbled upon Tori Amos and My Dying Bride through comments from fans as well.

I really love the fact that no matter who Rick talks to...Frampton, PRS, Sting, or now, Maynard...every episode starts as an interview, and ends as a conversation between friends/musicians. Rick is so damn versatile, its fantastic.
💯% One of these days I’m going to (try to) make a list of the “sub-fields” of musical knowledge of which Rick Beato is an expert…but I am sure I would miss some or many including several that are on dimensions of which I’m not even aware yet…I mean this guy could interview John Williams in Berlin tomorrow and produce the same quality result!
I think the biggest thing Rick has going for him is that when he breaks down artists songs he points out things the artist themselves didn’t realise, I think the artist respect that….and Rick unlike a lot of interviewer’s does not ask stupid irrelevant question….keep it up Rick….brilliant.

That's because Rick has the perspective of a music producer and music teacher. He has an understanding of music theory. That's very different from most interviewers that are usually journalists.
Not many former music producers do what Rick does. Rick has found a niche on UA-cam that no one else is doing from a perspective of a former music producer.

It's wild hearing a legend like Keenan describe his songwriting process and how he tends to defer to other people when starting. It takes a lot of self-worth to take a backseat and trust others to do their thing, especially as the *frontman* of all of his projects. Quite a rare thing in this industry!
He gets a bad rap...I think he is entitled to be selective with who interviews him. I dont believe just you are a rock icon, you HAVE put yourself out there. You put out great music...and your fans could care less. That's the way I see it. You brought up a good point about taking a backseat. No "l" in team.
I've always thought of bands as "the lead singer's band" or "the lead guitarist's band". Tool is different. It's not Maynard Keenan's band; it's Danny Carey's, since he calls the shots. Maynard pitches up and asks "What can I contribute to this?"
I cannot tell you how much I love Maynard for starting his other bands. It has kept Tool Tool. Most bands change their sounds and piss off fans. Maynard got out his other creative avenues with other bands. As a lifelong diehard Tool fan that doesn’t like any other stuff Maynard does I am very grateful!
Look, I even haven't finished to watch the whole interview yet, and I can already say something based on what I just saw: as a huge MJK and Tool fan, I've literally never seen him so relaxed in an interview, and that says much about how rick can make simple yet very interesting questions. Wonderful job as always❤️
yeah, i am about to watch it. seen maynard in a few past interviews where i come out thinking what an arrogant a-hole. but he has helped create a ton of my favorite music so i give him a pass:-).

It's really embarrassing I'm not a freak but I love this man more than anyone will ever understand seen him live probably close to 15 times and I cry every time I hear his voice live amazing singer and how he handles his success and his personal life is such an inspiration for people

Maynard is usually a difficult beast to tame in interviews and it's been a while since I've seen him so comfortable and talkative. What a nice interview. Congrats Rick!
He’s speaking with somebody who writes music and understands every nuance of the method, and Rick asks open questions and allows guests to feel comfortable answering them which is a great interview style. I think Maynard just had an instant respect for Rick.

As a Arizonan born and raised. Everyone loves him, from what I've heard from multiple people who have met him, he's also a super down to earth, great to fans at all times and a real renaissance man.
Him being super nice to fans literally contradicts almost every single fan interaction ever.
Can confirm. Lived in Prescott Valley about 20 minutes from Jerome where his record and wine stores are I've had a couple friends meet him who've said the same.

Rick is easily one of the, if not THE most respectful and insightful interviewer around. He never interrupts or oversteps, asks questions that we ALL want to know the answer(s) to, and is extremely passionate! So many times you will get an interviewer who just seems robotic and disinterested which ultimately turns the interview sour. Awesome job as always, Rick!

Wow, Beato got a lot of good stuff out of Maynard. Maynard is notoriously tough to interview. I guess maybe because Beato is so straight up enthusiastic about music, and willing to really dig into it, he is able to get Maynard to really engage. Or maybe I'm all wrong. But good interview all the same!
I agree, and I think Maynard himself has great expectations about who Beato is as an interviewer. The last time I saw something close to this was the one Lars Ulrich made to Maynard 4 years ago
how is he tough to interview? From what I've heard he speaks freely and honestly, I'd say the tough part is most interviewers are blowhards or clueless when it comes to meaningful topics I guess?
A lot of interviewers tend to ask the exact same questions over and over again, which can be annoying. Rick kind of starts out the same when he opens with his "Why three bands?" line of questioning, but he starts going into different places that allow Maynard to go over topics that haven't been done to death. He also has very specific technical knowledge about both music and instruments which I'm sure is very refreshing, like when they started talking about the Fairlight keyboard, something your average Rolling Stone interviewer isn't going to be able to discuss.
I'm fascinated with Maynard and his work ethic . Tobias Forge is another example of one man keeping at it until he hits his stride and his creation comes to fruition .

Maynard is very acerbic. Ask the wrong question, set the wrong tone and he will eviscerate the interviewer. Rick just gets him talking. Simply amazing.
I don't know much about Mr Keenan. I listened to some Tool in the nineties. In regards to your comment, he looked to have the urge to be cynical a couple of times, but instead chose gratitude and humility. That's the wine maker, and ageing as you do.

Rick is probably the first interviewer I've seen that can get Maynard engaged. Even more than he was on Rogan. All of the guys in the band are pretty private. This is legendary, great job Rick!

@@drmlabs Yea, Joe isn't the best. I remember there was a period where Maynard refused to talk about music in interviews at all. I think it may have been because of the lawsuit. But I remember that he would only really talk about comedy, wine and jujitsu. I think that last Rogan interview was Rogan's fault for sure.

The brilliance of Tool live, IMO, is the utter suppression of ego the four artists demonstrate. With the level of virtuosity, artistry, and decades of experience Tool has now, its breath taking to attend their performances and feel this incredible thing that is so unique to these four guys! And easily the best fans each time ive attended. Entire audience of mature, glowing, and loving fans. A musical temple where no one is separate or above or worshipped

This is the best MJK interview I have ever seen. He can often be aloof and cryptic. In contrast, this felt like two people who respect one another having an open and earnest conversation. Wonderful work, Rick. You are a treasure.
when he respects the interviewer he shuts off the troll and gets comfortable.
Rick ask real questions and Maynard picks up on it right away and gets into it.
I loved when Maynard was on Sammy Hagar's show and in the vineyard Sammy asks of he can just snap off a bunch of grapes (instead of taking one grape) and Maynard calmly and sternly says "I will punch you in the face".
Sign of a great interview, anywhere I skip to in the video, the guest is talking, rather than the interviewer. Nice job

I've never heard the classic question of" what is your writing process" answered like this. Only Maynard can answer it with such depth and clarity.
Puscifer's constant evolution of their songs is one of my favorite things about them. Favorites " The Undertaker" and " Momma Sed".

so good to get to revisit Jerome AZ, Maynard’s adopted hometown via this interview. Maynard and Jerome are now inextricably intertwined and the haunted mysterious vibe of Jerome and Maynard make perfect sense together. When i lived in Flagstaff would go down to Jerome, a tiny little town carved into the mountains between Prescott and Sedona, and got to meet the great Maynard a couple times. I love how he has become such an integral part of Jerome’s vibrant essence.

This is probably one of the best interviews I've ever seen with a musician. I think my favourite part is that not only is it an insight into Maynard James Keenan, but also an insight into you. I also appreciated that it seemed like you obviously had a list of questions you wanted to ask, but you also "read the room", identified his mood, and what he wanted to talk about and shifted gears to match it. I was smiling the whole time because you all were just "waffling".
I'm only 25 mins into this interview and I'm going to say, this is probably the best Maynard interview I've ever seen. He's totally relaxed,the questioning is on point and seem totally in his comfortable zone.
In 8 minutes and it feels like 15 minutes already. Amazing discussion!

Tool has been around for a long time.
Maynard is nearly 60 himself, so hardly some young upstart. He’s been doing this for a long time.
Tool has been around a while, but Puscifer has not. Perhaps it’d not have been a point that people would take issue with, had you mentioned them instead of Tool.
Either way, I get your point, and I feel you. Most people don’t continue to appreciate new music/new bands past a certain age (I think 30 is about right.. actually I think there’s studies that back this up), and it’s kind of a shame because there are so many good younger bands (and older bands/artists doing new things) who are making incredible music that’s just as impressive as anything from the musical/genre lineage that they’re existing in, and influenced by. There’s also a lot of crap, sure, but that’s no excuse to write off newer music altogether, and a lot of people do…
I became completely disenchanted with music by the time I was 28-30. I think it’s more common than you think, unless you struck gold
The musical references Maynard makes, shows his knowledge and understanding of what goes into making good music. It also speaks of a man that’s been humbled and knows there are many great musicians that came before him, and hopefully more to come after.
The whole song writing process just blows my mind. These musicians are true artistic geniuses!
I saw Tool twice this year, and I was stunned by the power and consistency of Maynard’s vocals. Just as good as when I first saw them in 2006. Maynard explaining his preparation for each gig therefore made a lot of sense. This dedication to vocal quality is really appreciated. 😎
seriously explains issues I've had with my voice over the years. Acid reflux, other crap trashing your vocal chords. The struggle is real
Saw Tool twice this year and once before covid and you are so right about the vocals. He sounds amazing. Sounded better during the Lateralus tour, but for someone who dealt with covid twice, he sounds badass. He pulled off the Grudge scream! This dude 🔥🔥🔥
Same. In total I've seen them 10 times but that Bonnaroo show was different. They were all having a blast. Maynard wasn't hiding in the shadows at all. He was in full on Rockstar mode, talking to the crowd and melting face. Best performance of theirs I've ever seen.
@@rubaidaallen2764 Oh yes, I've seen Tool twice, in 06 and 07. Yet to hear The Grudge live, but hearing a live bootleg of it from an 01 show, first time hearing it ever (as I was new to Tool music at that time), the song blew me TF away! Just a darkness and deep emotion in his voice. Almost shaman like. As I took in the lyrics and music, it was THAT SCREAM that shook my soul and inner psyche. I was literally shaking my head back and forth and started to shed tears, as if all the grudges and anger that I had ever held inside was released in a mad fury. Then he goes "Let go. Let go. Let go..." as it builds into that intense climax and coda. With the bad ass Carey drums and triplets at the end. Wow! It was quite an experience. It was like an exorcism of my inner demons finally released. And in my mind, I ended up forgiving a lot of people in my past that did me wrong or screwed me over. I still get emotional when I hear it. But yes, again, that scream was the capper! Many other songs get me emotional and fire me up in a positive way. Think Drop D tuning can really hit ones soul deep. Tool music in many regards is like musical psychotherapy.
@@briankelley4492 There's nothing like seeing these guys live. My goodness so fn good. There are certain songs that are played live that send you to another dimension, another realm. The Grudge, Reflection, Schism, Descending and Fear Inoculum. For me these songs are the most Tool. There is something super therapeutic about their songs. Absolutely 100% agree.

Crazy that The Noose is one of the most memorable drum tracks with APC for me. sometimes the space can be as significant as an insane drum fill.

I've been a massive Tool, A Perfect Circle and Puscifer for as long as I can remember, and I can honestly say this is the single best interview of Maynard James Keenan ever recorded.

Bravo Rick. As much as I love MJK's interviews where he trolls the interviewer for 5-10 minutes, this was awesome. I'm not sure you can find anything out there where Maynard goes deeper into his process, thinking, and even feelings, than you accomplished here.
I typically don't listen to interviews of bands, read articles on them or otherwise follow them. I'm more interested in their artwork and in some ways I think that is what Maynard and the boys were about in the early days of Tool. I didn't care that they said that they were into Lachrymology back in the day. Because I don't follow interviews I assume that was a joke back in the day but I think that my initial reaction was what they were after. Think for yourself. Interviews are all too often about the interviewer rather than the interviewee and THAT is what, I presume, Maynard was against (along with the idea that most singers shouldn't overly influence any fan).
Maynard also had a thing for jujitsu because he brought it up for no reason.

It's absolutely insane knowing this was the man fronting Tool through all those transcendent nights of revolt and apple bongs and existential angst of my teens. The painted man cowering behind giant Alex Gray screen prints at all those shows on the Lateralus tour. From Prison Sex on MTV to Inoculum on a phone, the journey we have been on Maynard has interwoven a thread into my own evolution. Pushing 60 and still irreverent as ever, I salute you and the human condition that has brought us to this moment.
Im 40 and TOOL is still my all time favorite band. Will be forever as their music is timeless. Keep rocking myfriend. Spiral out!

@@ileutur6863 simple ego maniac apc and pucifer he has all control. Tool he has to wait for danny , adam and Justin before he can do his thing. In interviews you can hear his displeasure with waiting for them..that being said waiting for over a decade would drive most people in his position just a bit crazy . I like alot of apc and pusifer songs but they are not the same quality of tool song's. There is not one tool song I dislike. Quality over quantity.
Listen with headphones. At first 8 minutes you will aware the one octave down on his voice. It makes him alienish human being. Lovely.
