    Changing clutch fluid to RBF660 and installing a thermal shield on master cylinder is enough to fix this issue.

    It’s pretty easy to modify the cmc yourself. I did. The delay valve is basically an extra chamber the clutch fluid has to go through. There are two small holes leading in and out of the chamber.
    To modify it you have to block the two little holes off. I blocked off the holes using some aluminum brazing bars and map torch from Home Depot( it’s basically a solder). Then I took some JB Weld steel stick and filled the whole delay chamber with it then I put the chamber cap back on. So it’s solder, steel stick on top of that, and then the cap.
    Next I drilled a 3/8 inch hole into the piston cylinder. I put my drill bit through the whole where the hardline fitting goes, and drilled into the piston cylinder from there.
    You have to completely disassemble the cmc to do this, and remove all grease and brake fluid.

    Just shows you how stubborn and ignorant new honda car buyers are. People, like mysef, have been telling this guy and others about the solution since the car came out. Wouldn't listen. Wouldn't listen... till finally they got it through their thick skulls. It's the crappy dampening clutch master cylinder that has been installed in every manual Acura/Honda since the Kseries first came out in 2001(02 rsx and 02 ep3s). Yes, EVERY manual Honda/Acura has the same issue. The fix for every one of them is to remove that dampening. ... easiest way to do it... buy the clutch master cylinder for an 01-05 civic em2 (call it the 05 civic EX to avoid confusion). Buy it directly from the dealer to avoid issues with aftermarket autopart store low quality issues. YES, this fits every Honda/Acura with the issue, which are all Honda/Acuras from 02+ (excluding the donor 01-05 civic EX). WHO SOLVED IT FIRST YOU ASK. NEW RSX BUYERS OVER 12YEARS AGO. IN 2005/2006 IF I REMEMBER CORRECTLY. I REMEMER WORKING WITH A BUNCH OF TURBO RSX OWNERS WHO SEEMED TO HAVE THE MOST PROBLEMS. IT WAS SOLVED RIGHT THERE AND THEN. ENJOY.

      It's funny that when Honda made the transition to the new "dampening clutch system," they made no mention about it in the USA... YET, IN THE AUSTRALIAN 2001 TYPE-R BROCHURE THEY DID MENTION THIS NEW SYSTEM... DID THEY KNOW THEN THE FATAL FLAW???

    • @michaelnasrallah

    • @copperkeyracing6167
      @copperkeyracing6167 6 років тому +1

      How did you know? That's exactly why the transmissions have problems, because they won't let me test drive it. Genius!... Wait. Are you saying the opposite, that the reason Honda doesn't let anyone test drive the Type-R is because they are afraid that people will find out that the transmissions/(clutch master cylinders) have problems? I do remember that back when the RSX-S came out in 2001, salesmen were ruining the transmissions and blowing up motors on test drives. The salesmen were doing it! Maybe Honda won't let anyone test drive the vehicle, including the salesmen, let alone the potential customer... Salesmen are crazier than the potential customer. What do they care? It's not going to be their car, so they just drive it like they stole it.

    • @FilthyFauci
      @FilthyFauci 6 років тому +1

      @@michaelnasrallah Honda can care less if you do or don't test drive the CTR. It's the dealership that doesn't want to let you test drive it. It's because the buyers of CTR's, want their car to have very minimal miles on it.

    Same thing happening on my 2018. Bought it 3 days ago and the 1st to 2nd grind has happened 4 times. Once with rev-matching on, three times without it. All four times between 3500-4000 RPM. Clutch fully depressed all 4 times...not "slamming" it by any means.
    I've contacted my Honda dealership to see what they think...waiting to hear back now. Clearly this is a known issue and fairly wide-spread.

    R-00123 here, currently 5,100 miles never a single grind or lock out. But some gear changes feel too notchy, especially 1-2. I'm hoping you're talking about the clutch slave cylinder. The type r does not have a stand alone clutch master cylinder, the brakes and clutch share the same master cylinder. The CDV is actually in the slave cylinder on the transmission. It seems pretty simple to remove on your own and is something I've been thinking about doing.

    Hi Elias, great video!
    I’m glad that you have your transmission fixed.
    Yes the problem was clutch delay, so it’s great that you have that fixed , plus you got a new transmission!
    I watched carefully how you press the clutch pedal. I would say that the oem transmission definitely doesn’t fit your driving style.
    You don’t press the clutch pedal for too long so you really needed the clutch delay fixed. I suppose that is the case of many Type R owners specially in the US.
    I’m from Europe and I have a very different driving style.
    I was a little worried about the gear grind in the FK8, but because of your videos I’m not worried anymore.
    I hope that one day I’ll be a happy FK8 owner.
    Thanks a lot Elias, keep up the good work!

    The CMC and slave in the 8th gen Si were notorious for having issues with the chambers that would act as dampers I'm surprised they even included that idea in the type R. I swapped it with KTuned CMC and slave and the vibrations are most definitely felt and can even be heard as well. Maybe the steel braided line intensifies this too. I can see aftermarket ones being made for the type r in the future.

      bouchy85 Will the new master cylinder fix it? I did go extra fast from one to two one time and heard a super brief minor non normal gear sound, my clutch was way higher than normal, might have just shifted too early, and then I realized that by nature I really don’t push the limits of the engagement point, I tend to wait until it’s more bottomed out like.

    I experienced it driving my 2018 CTR home from the dealer. I thought I was just a bit rusty driving a mt but it happened several times before. I have an Alta shirt shifter adapter now but it did it even before I installed that. It dies feel kind of crunchy. That delay valve in the clutch master cylinder is not allowing to disengage the clutch with the right timing.

Usually right wheel, no "sure trigger": clutch engaged/disengaged, throttle on/coasting, brakes on/off, usually STARTS during turning . At 4500 miles she's in for 3rd time. 2nd time, Honda grasped at rotor splash plate, no fix. They've heard the grinding noise, were horrified (also sounds like a submarine being crushed). I can still see the “notchiness” in the shifts. Got rid of that in my 10th gen si by doing the following: acuity shifter cable bushings, acuity shifter base bushings (most important upgrade), and a weighted shift knob (skunk2 matches interior the best IMO. I also swapped out the shifter assemble for the stock type R one for a shorter throw than the si. It’s a lot of labor to get to the base bushings but there’s vids on it. Good luck. I understand what you are saying about being persistent. It's just hard to do when you are frustrated with a brand new car not working as you'd expect. Did Honda ever get back with you and explain why they chose to do that with the master cylinder other than the engineering thought behind it? It seems totally counter intuitive to do such modification on the clutch function (where engagement and disengagement are critical) on any vehicle, let alone they Type R that is meant to be a performance handling car.

    • @Garismatic
      @Garismatic 6 років тому +2

      The idea of the clutch delay valve is to prevent "sidestepping" off the clutch. It's very hard on the entire driveline. Iirc, the first Honda to have it was the AP2 (late S2000), because so many people were breaking drivelines with drag launches.
      The clutch still disengages at full speed, but when the pedal is released, the clutch re-engagement speed is slowed.

    • @ksorsomeplace
      @ksorsomeplace 6 років тому +1

      I'm not sure of clutch engagement/disengagement would really affect the gear grind issue. The way I understand a manual to work is this: Disengage the clutch, thus disconnecting the engine from the transmission. Then, shifting into the gear you want. Since this is a syncomesh transmission, the syncros should prevent any possible gear grind as they sync the gear being selected to the output shaft speed. Then, engage the clutch to provide power to the input shaft of the transmission and apply the throttle and away you go. So, possibly, it was the transmission replacement that did more than anything for your gear grind issue???

    • @copperkeyracing6167
      @copperkeyracing6167 6 років тому

      Robert Bryant Honda wants you to ruin your transmission multiple times so that their dealer network will stay in business. Plain and simple. It's been that way since the new clutch dampening system went into use in 2001 with the DC5/EP3. They had such $$ success $$ with it, they put it in every manual transmission vehicle ever since. Simple fix, as I've mentioned and others have mentioned several times... use the 01-05 civic Clutch Master Cylinder. If you ever buy an aftermarket clutch, ACT requires this change with every clutch they sell for Honda/Acura. Even big name aftermarket companies know this.

    • @copperkeyracing6167
      @copperkeyracing6167 6 років тому

      When the clutch master cylinder delays the disengagement of the clutch, it's like your not using the clutch pedal at all to shift. Not using the clutch pedal while shifting is called power shifting, just ask Honda. Because that's what they will accuse you of when they open up the transmission and see all the damage YOU did. Power shifting will obviously ruin your gears. Using the factory original clutch master cylinder will ruin your gears. Ruin gears means the dealer stays in business making $$$$ fixing your transmission over and over and over again.

    That 4th gear lockout is usually to keep your engine from being damaged.....in this video you we're driving at 20mph in 4th with the pedal floored, this is how you run lean and detonate. Same thing when you put it in 6th and floor it going slow, turbo is boosting its ass off but not enough fuel until the car realizes it and then you see black smoke from the ECU trying not not run too lean and dumping fuel. It's not about missing shifts and over revving the engine....

      I have tried a couple things without going too far since I just got the car. I found that adjusting the clutch pedal slightly helps because it ensures complete disengagement of the clutch when shifting. I did try changing the trans fluid at the dealer with the same honda trans fluid but that did nothing. That was more of me wanting to make sure there was the proper amount of fluid in the car from the factory. I have heard that switching to Amsoil Synchromesh is supposed to really help. I haven't tried this yet but I really want to try it.

      I'm not talking about Honda's warranty (I have 5 years, by the way) I'm talking about the law ("Gewährleistung"). Honda's warranty ("Garantie") is a voluntary service they offer, so they can dictate the terms whichever way they want. The law however states that the dealer has to fix any issues that were present at delivery. And within the first 6 months a customer doesn't have to prove these issues existed at that time. Instead the dealer has to prove they didn't exist if they refused to fix them. Although I might be wrong I'm pretty sure that's not a thing in the US.
      Also, transmissions aren't considered subject to wear.
      And my dealer is a actually a pretty nice guy. I'm sure we'll get along.

    These aren’t 80’s F1 cars. People grinded the collars on gearboxes and wore out synchros in the 90’s Civics and Integras just the same. Most manual transmissions aren’t designed to be thrown quickly into the next gear as fast as possible even if it works and it feels smooth. Clutch should go in all the way, revs fall slightly as you move the lever between gears, after the slight delay you move the lever into the next gear, and quickly release the clutch so you’re not slipping it and putting heat into it (not saying dump it, just quickly as needed to be smooth). Truthfully, as much as we love manuals for the driving experience they provide, automatic transmissions are superior in almost every other way.

    Has anyone tried using a better tranny fluid. Most factory fills are not true synthetic. They are API Group 3 which has no true synthetic base. If the fluid id MADE in Germany or Japan, and says on the label "Synthetic", it must be true synthetic - API Group 4. The only motor oils that are Group 4 in the U'S. are Redline, AMSOIL Signiature, and Royal Purple. You can tell by the price. Most U.S. "Synthetic" oils are $4-6 a quart. Group 4 is $10-11. Redline gear lube is over $50 a gallon. Valvoline synthetic gear lube is only about $23 a gallon. The difference is that Group 4 can take heat and wear better. Totally worth it.

    The valve has nothing to do with the trans problems. Remember what a "normal grind" sounds like when you get lazy and then listen to the sound of those videos, totally different. What about the 4-5 lockout? Get Honda to fix the trans!!!!! The valve is a good thing and provides more modulation of the clutch pedal as opposed to the almost binary operation w/o it. Take that valve out and I suspect you will spin the tires more and likely at almost every stop if it happens to be wet out. Some may like this, others may not but no sense in spending money unless you have to but at least know what your spending on.

    • @michaelcooley8275
      @michaelcooley8275 6 років тому +1

      Only if the 8th and 9th are trying to slam the gears, but still a bandaid all the same. The valve doesn't change the throw or distance the plunger travels in the Slave Cylinder it just changes the time frame in which it completes that throw. The gentleman below describes it and what it really is is a bypass, ( Like all hydraulic equipment) and it doesn't activate until the pressure is equal in the chambers and that is what causes the delayed activation. Enlarge the hole size or clog them and you get a faster reaction and it could be a slam of that piston. Review the SavageGeese video and the trans problems go back a long time. That video, then you say 8th and 9th gen now these in the Type R --- not a terribly pretty picture.

Then, rather than fix the problem and change the CMC for this Honda and 17years of Hondas before it, they will give you new transmission internals, and then the next time you need new internals they will charge you about $3k to do it over and ovee and over again... until one day you get sick of paying Honda and you either change the clutch master cylinder yourself or you pass on the money pit to someone else as you sell the broken transmission Honda. Sad, but true.

    The gear lockout has pissed me off more than the grinding. What's crazy is that I'm way up there in number and still have it. #11884
    Edit: My Honda dealership sucks ass though. They won't fix anything they can't directly reproduce. (Like the static that plays out of 1 speaker sometimes that I have on video.) Is there a recommended way to get Honda to acknowledge these issues?

      Just keep calling national Honda, and keep bringing the car to the dealer until they fix it.

    What you have done is supposed to be an important recall from Honda. I dont want to buy Type R because i am deeply disappointed with their customer service.

    I had a 2007 Civic. The manual transmission was horseshit. Looks like they never got better. You guys should stop giving them your money, it's the only way they'll learn.
