Highly recommend as a fellow R owner to purchase the Perrin rear engine mount insert. It gives the overall sturdiness of a hasport mount but is much more compliant for everyday use. Eliminates wheel hop completely. One of my favourite small mods that I’ve done that made a big difference!

I respectfully disagree with your comments about the rev matching. When you're under 2k rpm, there really isn't a need for it. At that RPM, the car is very docile, a sequential downshift is about 300 rpm, you can do it without rev matching and barely feel anything. The rev matching above 2k rpm works perfectly, and if you're driving at a more "spirited" pace it's absolutely spot on. I didn't think I'd like a car with auto rev match, now I think it's one of the best features.
As with any car, there are things that you'd do differently to suit your own preferences, but as a total package the Type R is very well thought out. Don't like the exhaust? Drive it with an aftermarket exhaust and the thrill will wear off in 10 minutes (see the amount of used exhausts in the classifieds) Compared to Veloster N? Are you kidding? Build quality and long term ownership issues serve Honda over Hyundai hands down. It's not even close folks.
Style wise, I had a hard time getting over the rear end and wing... I finally bought one, then I drove it. If you like to drive... it doesn't matter, (you can't see the wing from the drivers seat) and it drives better than anything south of $100K and better than some north of $100K. They're THAT good. I can buy about any car I want, but for a DD that handles the road, AND trips to the hardware store, it's just about the perfect car. And in my neck of the woods, I never see another one. That's nice!

@@layne4376 You do know that Honda has addressed all of those issues for the 2020-2021 Type R right? With 20 percent better cooling, better brakes, and also fixing the second gear grind. As for the thin paint you can easily just get a decent ceramic coating on it that’ll protect the paint if you’re so worried about the thin paint.

    • @toddtharp4226
      @toddtharp4226 3 роки тому +3

@@layne4376 Do YOU have those issues on your Type R? I'm speaking of first hand experience with mine. I can't say anything about the paint... I haven't experienced any issues, I run it thru the car wash occasionally and it stays on. LOL! I have not experience any 2nd gear grind (mine is a '20), I will say there is definitely a rhythm or pace for the 1-2 shift, you can shift quickly but you can't rush it, if that makes any sense. Never an issue downshifting to 2nd. I've never had an issue with heat, but you are correct that some do. I do think that there's probably something to do with what kind of track layout and ambient temperature that would have lots to do with that issue, but it can be addressed. After all it is a street car, and there are limitations to what the manufacturer can do and still keep the pricing in line with the market. I'm sure the vast majority of owners (like me) do NOT track their car, nor plan to. If I did, then I'd expect to address some shortcomings as I would with any other street car that I wanted to run at the track. But it DID manage to stay cool enough to set a record at the Nurburgring! ;-)
Lastly, I can be obtuse about many things, but you are off base about your assumptions on my "obtuseness" and my financial status. I don't have car payments. That is not a boast, that is the product of many years of hard work and saving my money to get to a point of financial independence. I do not stack up my monthly payments to match my monthly income. I do however look at things like cost of ownership very closely. So I stand by my comment on Honda over Hyundai, because imho, everything in the "cost of ownership" category , including purchase price, maintenance, and resale value will favor the Honda. That's been proven over the years. Specifically, the Type R is a great example because of it's extremely low depreciation rate. If you're able to get one at MSRP or, as in my case below MSRP, then it makes for a really fun car to own and drive, and is practical for everyday use, and doesn't cost much to own. It's a winning combination.

With that price range, the STI, a camaro ss 1le, or anything in that price range seem better overall performance car. Maybe its the power or the way the car pulled, it just felt like I was waiting so long to get in the next gear. I've driven an FK8 a few times, and what I don't like about its auto rev matching is that it won't do it going down into 1st. The two situations I like to rev match into 1st is super slow stop and go traffic, and for rolling stops at stop signs and free right turns.
Otherwise, while I agree with the sentiment that auto-rev matching should just always work anywhere in the rpm range, I admittedly can't fathom why you would ever want to let your rpms go below 2k unless you're bumming around in 1st gear, or slowing to a stop from 2nd.
Personally, I almost never let this type of manual car get below about 24-2500, especially in something that's turbocharged, that way if and when I want some power sooner rather than later, I don't have to simultaneously hurt my turbo by it asking for more power than it can currently give me.
Being rude to the turbocharger aside, I'd say the proper cruising rpm range in a car like this is going to be 2 to 3k, and I'd personally always be much closer to 3k than 2k. Do that, and you'd of course never have an issue. It wouldn't surprise me if Honda figured people generally aren't trying cruise around below 2k rpms, because it really doesn't make sense to.

I have a new Type R, never noticed that it misses rev matches. Never a miss. The reason I use it instead of turning it off, the pedal is offset poorly. Making heel toe very difficult. The 2k limit hasn't been a problem because at that low rpm you really don't need the rev match. I agree that the exhaust should have modes for those that want it. My biggest grip (though I LOVE the car) is the sixth gear ratio. It needs to be longer for street driving. Rarely will you clip into 6th on a track, and if you do it will be for minimal time. They should have made it way longer.

I know you shouldn't have to do that but it makes a huge difference keeping the fibers healthy and standing up. Get some Dr. Beaselys Alcantara cleaner and Once every month or so spray the wheel, lightly dry it with a microfiber and brush the fibers back up. Alcantara takes consistent maintenence to stay looking good and healthy. And never over saturate it. When you clean it, use the least amount of cleaner possible

Having owned my FK8 for two years and having done a fair few track days you make a good point on the three modes not being interchangeable enough. I find the heavy steering annoying in type R mode especially if you have the driving aids turned off. The car is more lively and I prefer a lighter steering to aid correction. As for rev match it doesn't need to work below 2k as your rpm differences are in 100's not the 1000's. I agree with the steering wheel as well. Its great for grip and feel but will not wear well at all. On the subject of the exhaust I think its silent for a reason. Every aftermarket exhaust sounds too raspy for my liking. They make the car sound like a small 2 door cheap hot hatch. Good honest review though. Get some more seat time and enjoy.

Also was sie feststellen . Dann , mal ganz ehrlich : Was soll dieser G-Punkt ?

Never have I ever had a problem with my steering. Personally, I feel like the steering is perfect and as for the rev matching I don’t always count on it to rev match for me if it does it for me than great if not whatever I’ll do it myself. I do agree on the matter of the wheels, the offset is weird and the rims should’ve been at least 19in.

Your rev match complaint is lame, I’ve never had a problem with my rev match and it’s always smooth. Of course it wouldn’t rev match if your below 2k because it wouldn’t rev match such a low rpm. The steering wheel for me is leather and I love it, also the stiffness of it in +R is perfect for tracking the car. The lower back support on the seats I agree 100%. The wheel offset is made purposely for 2 things first being rocks flying and hitting your paint as second for the torque steer when hitting it.

So glad my '18 has the leather steering wheel.
As for lumbar support, I have no fatigue or aches after even an hour or more, so the seats work even without any obvious lumbar support.
As for the wheels and tires, stock is best. Look best, drive best. Worth the extra maintenance.
You did not mention the one real annoyance- the 39.5 foot turning circle, which makes parking harder, and means you will curb the wheel if you cut a right turn too sharply. Word to the wise.
