    I’m an Amsoil dealer; if Honda says Amsoil voids your warranty contact Amsoil immediately and we’ll get lawyers involved on your behalf.

    I’ll be honest with ya, I’m not sure if this is how you drive everyday, but it looks like you’re moving the shifter unnecessarily quick between each shift. Not saying you need to, but it would make your driving experience much better if you learn to move the shift lever with a more SMOOTH transaction between each gear rather than a quick shift. I had the same impression with my evo x gear box. It was making the same noise when I shifted from 2nd gear to 3rd gear. Took my car to my tuner to find out everything was okay with my transmission. My tuner told my I should try to learn how to shift between each gear with a more smooth transaction rather than a quick one. So I began the learning process of shifting each gear with a more smooth transaction. Ever since then, the grinding went away 😬 again, this is just my opinion, you can take it for what it is but I hope you could give it a shot, maybe this could help you as much as it did with me?

    glad this worked. Im skeptical if it's a complete fix though. What you described sounds more like a shift fork issue. Amsoil is def better than the stock fluid though. What made you choose Amsoil over Motul? I'm running Motul and it's notchy as fuck when cold. Curious what made you go with Amsoil.

    Here in Poland people are changing clutch fluid to motul rbf 660 and put heat cover over clutch secondary cylinder to prevent heating up clutch fluid. And it works.

    Although I don't have the issues with the transmission as you and others have reported. I'm curious to see if the higher quality oil resolved the issue. I used a synchromesh oil from BG back in the day with my Integra and it completely cured a grind I had going into 3rd gear.

    Did you purchase the trans oil and take it to them or did they get it themselves? Also, when you got your oil changed did you go with OEM oil and filter? Im due for an oil change myself. Hi there, I was curious how the Amsoil handles when it's still cold. I read a few years ago, especially with the S2K guys, that while the Amsoil was good after warm-up, it felt really rough when still cold. Would love the feedback! I am also an Amsoil dealer and have been advising to stick to the Honda MTF over Amsoil to Honda customers. Thanks!

    • @FlyinGato
      @FlyinGato  6 років тому

      Amsoil works great, but especially in the R transmission, you have to be very ginger when you're shifting for the first 10 minutes, after that, it's all good. I recommend it.

      I was tempted to, but I wanted Honda to get it, I want them to hurry up with the fix. I already know what they will find - lots of synchro material since I've been grinding the hell out of 2nd gear synchro

  • @MayhemCanuck
    @MayhemCanuck 6 років тому +1

    15 year Honda Tech here... I would have first off driven with you, then watched your video then started a Techline file then pulled the transmission apart and checked the synchro's as well as an inspection. My reason is from 06-11 I replaced so many 2-3 synchro sets in that gen of six speed that I had 13 files open one time.. during that time they came out with a service bulletin. Premature wear, replaced with Carbon lined ones, fixed everyone, even the accords. We have two out in the field and no issues with them yet and I know that the R trans is new but I am guessing that when enough get sold and the complaints start coming in more frequently there will be more attention at Honda brought to it. Ya it's a pain and I bet they are already working on a fix or at least looking into but they won't say anything till there is a repair. Either way if the problem gets worse or the transmission hand grenades it's covered for 5year/100,000km here in Canada , then they replace it.

    • @FlyinGato
      @FlyinGato  6 років тому +1

      Awesome, always nice to have Honda Techs comment!!! You guys are always insightful. Our trans is covered for 5 years too, but that means that you can't mod it for a bit of extra power if you think your trans will die off rather quickly. It's a bit of a conundrum.

    I saw on the vtec academy channel that the trans has a water cooler. He mentioned that it doesn’t just cool but it warms the Tran oil up quicker too. That was interesting!
    Traditional trans coolers are air cooled. This may have something to do with a special need for this trans? Not sure

    Flyin gato I have a question. I have a 2017 Honda Civic Si and when I go into first gear going pass anything 5 mph it seems a bit hard to get in to. It’ll feel clunky and not smooth. Is that normal?

    • @charlestx2x44
      @charlestx2x44 6 років тому

      It’ll only feel smooth to get into 1st gear while I’m come to a stop around 1-2 mph ( or if I’m already at a stop )

    • @johnbauer4367
      @johnbauer4367 6 років тому

      Charles Xiong I have a 2017 civic SI as well. That's unusual to shift back into 1 st while the car is still moving. If you really need to go back down to 1 st gear, rev match first, by blipping the gas pedal to engage the synchros.

    • @charlestx2x44
      @charlestx2x44 6 років тому

      john bauer I do rev match to engage the synchros. Maybe I’m just gently pushing it into 1 gear a little too much. I tried pushing it into 1st gear with a little more energy and it felt smooth soo.. idk

    • @FlyinGato
      @FlyinGato  6 років тому

      They actually didn't design the transmission to go into first gear unless you're stopped at a light. The only way to do this is to carefully revmatch the shift.

  • @BrokeBuilt

    It smooth because the fluid has no life to it, it's still thick and has it's minerals and vitamins in it (lol) , give it a few days/months let the fluid really get hot and try your crazy shifting again , I wouldn't do crazy shifting all the time putting wear on your transmission components, I'm thinking it will do something once the fluid starts to age I always used Pennzoil synchromesh in my cars because it's a little thicker than honda m/t fluid , could also try regular oil like 5w30 I use 10/40 in my car and change it out every time I do oil changes .

    I don't know. It would just leave a bad tasted in mouth having paid what many people have paid for this car and have this kind of a problem. The automotive industry has years and years and years of experience building transmissions. Sure, you can miss something in testing or what not, but what happened to standing behind your product? I've had no issues with my EX-L coupe and the CVT, so I'm inclined to think that the design is there. Of course, I drive it fairly easy 99% of the time. But, a Type R, with it's more honed and defined purpose, ought to be designed to handle the more aggressive driving, right? I'm sure Honda has to deal with customer of all sorts, but they should respond in a collaborative manner to those who are demonstrating a good faith attempt to solve an issue.

      TBills 3000 there won't be a recall unless Honda gets more of these coming to the dealerships, once that happens Honda will release a Service Bulletin for the Service Manager(s) to review and inform Technicians and Service Advisors, within the bulletin it will give a repair procedure(s) for the techs to preform.

    the dealership shouldn't charge you for the service because the reason you getting it done is to fix an issue the car has

      +turbocars4fun I agree, but it's out of their hands, Honda won't pay for it since their official position is that there's no problem

      I'm a tech at one of my local Honda dealership, the reason why it's not under warranty is because they just drained the fluid and put new fluid in. That is considered regular maintenance for example an oil change. This may have solved the issue but for us techs the real question is what caused the problem.

      Edgar Dominguez do you have good favor with your warranty manager? If so can you give us an update on what they believe the problem is "unofficially".

    I was considering buying this car but I don't want to be a beta tester for any car manufacturer. I bought a 2018 Civic Sport in a manual. I know this is the car you owned before you traded it in for the Type R. I'm going to wait a year or two before I consider the R. Plus there are rumors they are going to release several variants to this vehicule. Maybe an even more powerful version. I would more likely consider this car if it didn't have that big wing in the back. I'm not going to drive it fast enough to have that thing be functional. You would probably lose your license if you get caught driving it fast enough to have that thing actually be functional lol. But I love your videos and good luck with the vehicule.

    • @e5m956
      @e5m956 6 років тому

      Then why buy a Type R if you're not going to utilize its performance? ;)

    • @klong4uify
      @klong4uify 6 років тому

      I would utilize the 0-60 performance like I did with my S2000, and the handling. You don't need to drive 120 MPH to have fun. I also own a Mazda MX5 ND and that's a blast to drive within the speed limit. Of course I'll speed here and there. All I'm saying is do you realize how fast you will need to be driving to need the downforce that wing provides? If you are tracking the car then that's another story. It's a style preference thing. I'm not crazy about the wing, but I understand other people are and that's just fine. I'm going to wait to see what the variants look like and enjoy the hatchback for now, and the MX5.

    As most of us know High performance transmissions from Honda usually have this grinding/gear lock out behaviors. In personally own a DC5 Type S and it had this same behavior. I used fresh green label Honda fluid, amsoil fluid as well none did the job.
    I have been using ACDelco Synchromesh Transmission Fluid, It solved all my issues for over 2 years now. It has NEVER come back.
    I recommended it to all my DC5 fellows (6k+ on IG) they all solved their issues as well. They are extremely happy.
    Give it a try if this Amsoil fluid doesn't work for you.

    This is not a problem tranny oil will fix (it does help a hair). You need to delete the cdv in the slave. Then go ahead and properly adjust your clutch pedal and cmc. Every single person who's purchased ANY manual Honda in the past 15yrs+ should be doing it the moment they take ownership.

    I've posted before, I will post again. The grinding, notchiness, apparent lockout of certain gears is purely an issue with the syncronizers along with the clutch delay valve compounding the problem. As others have posted, this is not unique to the Type R manual transmission, the tolerances in all Honda manual transmissions are very tight, throws are short, and engine RPM's are typically higher for Honda cars. There were similar issues when Honda released the S2000, the one easy fix was to change out the Honda MTF for another kind. Back then GM Syncromesh FM was what everyone was using, it made the transmission shift smoother, removed the notchiness and all but eliminated the gear grinds. My 2002 S2000 was one the cars that had notchiness and an occasional grind when shifting. Changing to a different MTF resolved the issue, made shifting feel very smooth, and I ran GM Syncromesh for many years, until Honda reformulated their MTF upon which I switched back to the Honda fluid. The new Honda fluid is good, much better than the old, but probably not quite as good as a Syncromesh fluid (Amsoil or GM or Royal Purple or Redline). Once the fluid was changed, it was a permanent fix for pretty much all AP1 owners that were complaining of shifting issues. However, you did need to change the fluid regularly, every 20k-30k miles. When Honda released the AP2 S2000 they changed some of the low gear synchro rings from brass to carbon which also improved the shifting feel, however GM Synchromesh fluid was not compatible with the carbon synchro rings, so using that fluid was not recommended for anyone with an AP2 who might have had some shifting issues, although I think most shifting issues were resolved with the carbon synchro rings. I'm a bit surprised Honda may not have learned their lesson and not using carbon synchro rings for all of their high performance manual transmissions (maybe they are and it's still a problem). If not, it makes me wonder if once again Honda will change to carbon synchro rings on 2019 models of Type R transmissions.

      Best post ever right here. I had a turbo EK civic with a nasty 3rd gear grind above 4k rpm and it went away when I went to GM synchromesh. Amazing stuff. Honda used to specify that you could use engine oil if didn't have honda MTF so clearly they just didn't give a shit because any quality fluid would say that there is no substitute.

    Sooo, we're at the point where we buy a brand new $40,000 car and the freaking transmission doesn't work? We have to immediately put in a new transmission oil? Back when Honda was good I drove an Accord Hatchback DX and NOTHING ever went wrong with it over 5 years!
    By the way, your transmission is still broke. Honda does it on purpose so they can still keep the money train rolling. Sure, they'll be nice and professional to your face but if you notice they've got their hand in your back pocket while doing so.
