- I haven't played this one in over a decade. Am I coming back to something that's truly a treasure? Or is there a reason for the spacious time gap? Super Mario Sunshine is the 2002 sequel to revolutionary Super Mario 64. No pressure or anything, but does Sunshine offer something that the N64 classic could not besides better graphics? Let's pop this in and enjoy the summer breeze.
I love how a ton of you noticed the Xbox One almost immediately. :) It was a half and half deal I made with my brother. I was gonna get one eventually anyway, so why not pay just half the price?
I've heard that the Xbox One isn't as bad as people thought it would turn out to be. Is that true?

ToskiHero and EHAN oh with out a doubt, its fixed all of the initial problems they came out with and they almost have the UI all sorted out. I have all three consoles and i have to say that the xbox one's controller is better in every aspect compared to the ps4 except the d-pad. None of the consoles, as you must know, have an extensive library of games its really just preference. The graphics look identical, your naked eye cant pick up graphical differences past 702 pixels. And when it comes down to it, its all about your friends and what they have, or in someones case like Johnny's, its completely on preference. I think if you want to pick a system on preference id say ps4, but since i have a ton of friends that have the x1, ive had a way better time. Friends can lengthen or shorten the lifespan of a game

Super Mario sunshine and sonic adventure 2 are awfully similar. Both have a fake Mario/Sonic (Bowser Jr. and Shadow) and that causes Mario/Sonic to get arrested.

And both suck hard when trying to do 100%.
SA2 is bullshit to just complete and get to the final boss. Some of those levels are pure torture.
And by many people both games are considered the best of their series, but forget how badly it has aged

It's funny, I only got around to completing this game about 2 months ago, in the midst of the lockdown. I've had the game for 18 years and only when a CORONAVIRUS shuts down the world do I get to finish it.
This aged well.

This is my all time favorite game! I have completely cleared it! I collected all 120 shines, all 240 blue coins, all 100 coins in each level, and ever rebeat the final stages to get the alternate ending (which is just a different picture at the end but still) I wanted to do and see everything this game had to offer me!

Well, say if there WAS a reward, I'd probably still complain about the brutal difficulty of some of the Shine courses. Pachinko was never fun, and the Poison River is just royal pain in the ass to complete, and tiring to reach.

If you try to 100% any video game, your expectations of the reward for doing so would be as high as the difficulty for 100%-ing said game. I think video games, if applicable, should have a good difficulty-to-reward ratio for if gamers want to go after the 100% completion.

Supposedly after Mario's vacation, Isle Delfino received *IMMENSE* backlash from the entire mushroom kingdom. You would think that they would contemplate that the Princess of said mushroom kingdom was captured by an impostor of the hero while the real deal was forced to tidy the entire island. Some of the civilians actually realize there's another Mario, including the Mayor of Isle Delfino who should be erupting at the police department.
I only just noticed that on the airstrip in the beginning of the game, the goop is arranged into a mario head.
I 100% this game every year at least and I manage to do it in two days at most with only playing a couple hours at a time. I couldn't list off where all the blue coins are but playing the game I just know where they all are. I have played it so much I have learned how the psychics work in the Pachincco machine level and can do that first time. This is my favourite game ever and I am award it has issues but the issues don't bother me and also the good out weighs the bad for me.
Was I the only one that as a kid was scared of Mario's doppelgänger? I swear it frightened me to think of that thing at night.

The way he feels about this game is the way I feel and am gonna feel years from now with The Last Jedi
Don’t even compare the two. Sunshine is still fantastic and amazing overall by mass amounts of people while last Jedi is still heavily controversial and damaging to a lot of people.
i know you don't use emulators but trying this at 1080p with the dolphin emulator makes for an amazing gaming experience!

personally this is my favorite Mario game the music is amazing its one beautiful looking game (I love the tropical beach setting) and using fludd is very fun but I still agree its not worth 100% completing
If you ask me, you should consider the game 100% completed when you get all the missions completed in every level, including the two secret shines and the 100 coin shine. Plus all the secrets in Delfino island. You really shouldn't waste your time on the blue coins.
You can purchase shades and a shirt in delfino plaza with shine sprites
Honestly, I didn't rage at all when playing the Pachinko machine. I played this game on the switch port, and I just took my time knowing that the slots with the red coins go down a slide that puts me safely back on the bottom. I still went in knowing how frustrating it is, but it seems best to just not try and get all red coins in one pachinko launch.

I couldn't take my eyes away. I often forget how beautiful this game is, and I loved the focus on the controls! It's something that is often forgotten. While I'll admit, it's not my favorite Mario game (my nostalgia boner is too hard for Super Mario 64, both N64 and DS), it's charm is definitely something that can't be imitated. Great review :)

The picture of the whole cast isn’t really “nothing”, but it’s not a good reward either.
@@Mac14329 It might as well be nothing. The reward in 64 isn't all that great (i think it's the triple jump, Yoshi being on the roof of the castle and Yoshi giving Mario 100 lives). The 64 rewards kind of suck because you are basically done with the game, but it's still better than a postcard and nothing else.
Not to mention Sunshine is a sequel and sequels should in principle improve upon the failings of the previous entries, not be worse.

I have to agree. The blue coins are miserable. There's no reason to attempt them without a guide, given that some will only appear in certain missions on each stage. And that's assuming you want to try at all. I love going for the shine sprites. Even the pachinko machine and Lily pad death river. They're a right pain in the ass, but at least I know where they are and how to get them. They're challenging. I don't have to scour the same stage up to 8 times in different missions to find the last blue coin. That's not a challenge, that's alienating the player.
I 100% every Mario game I play. Every star in 64 and both Galaxy games, full 5 star completion on the NSMB series, all that. But I refuse to get 120 shines in Sunshine. It sucks. It's not fun

I got Super Mario 3D All Stars when it came out.
Even though I got 100% on my copy of Galaxy AND Galaxy 2 (One of my proudest moments as a gamer was beating The Perfect Run. And oh yeah, obviously it sucks that they didn't include Galaxy 2.)
Even though I got all *150* stars in Super Mario 64 DS.
But I have never played Sunshine before SM3DAS.
And I feel like a masochist.
I mean I do have 99 Shines and I'm slowly chipping away at every area in the game.
But... I only have like about 150 blue coins.
And I still have to beat the Lily Pad.
And Pinna Park Episode 8 (The balloons on the roller coaster)
At least I beat the Pachinko machine (something my brother couldn't do) and the Sand Bird.
So I'm going on this long spiel to ask...
How much hell am I in for to find the remaining 90-something blue coins?
@@iexist_15 I mean when I say, you want a guide. I love a lot about Sunshine, but blue coins aren't one of those things. If you're bent on finding them all without a guide, you're in for some real shit. Some of them are super obscure. And like I mentioned, only available in certain missions.
I applaud the person who has it in them to get through everything, but it is not a good time on your own unless aimless scavenger hunts are your thing
@@tilerh17 Good thing I've been to Super Mario Wiki so much in the last 5 months it's been added to my "Frequently Visited" section of my search bar.
To be honest I haven't specifically been on the hunt for the blue coins yet, the only places that I really need it for are Noki Bay, Sirena Beach, and Pianta Village.
Then again, when I saw the blue coins in Corona Mountain for the first time (I had already died about 10 times from trying to steer the goddamn boat) I immediately avoided them and went straight to Bowser.
Even then, I usually haven't been a guy who needs to 100% stuff. The only games of done that for are the Mario Games I mentioned, the port of Majora's Mask on the 3DS, and Madden 12 on the Wii (seriously).
I'm only really doing this because 1. I'm trying to keep myself occupied until Bowser's Fury gets released and the Wii U becomes even more irrelevant (and maybe BoTW 2 and Galaxy 3 pls pls pls). 2. I kind of want to get a lot of value out of SM3DAS and the best way to do that is to 100% every game. And 3. Especially between me and my brother, I have a lot of pride with completing stuff that's hard as balls. Saying that you beat it makes dying 50+ times on The Perfect Run worth it. Having to deal with Dreadnought Galaxy's purple coins and the stupid trash Stars twice makes it worth it when you finally get the last star. Somehow getting every Star in Tick-Tock Clock and Rainbow Ride is worth it when you get to go up to the roof and read Yoshi's spelling typo. Johnny said that the only thing 100%ing Sunshine is worth is bragging rights, and sometimes that's good enough for me. But it still would've been better if they did more than just a picture. (Like what if it turned out that the picture was a postcard that Mario sent to Luigi and we got a cutscene of him reading it at his mansion and that inspires him to go to Isle Delfino and we could play as Luigi. Wouldn't that have been so much better?)

There isn't even a point to collecting them, because only the 49 specific Shines from clearing the 7th mission of all 7 stages matters! This game's structure is seriously flawed.

Haha! Best Mario review yet Johnny! I've heard lots of things about Super Mario Sunshine, both the good, the bad, and the ugly. Every franchise has that 1 game that you don't care about, or are simply not interested in. And right now I'm trying to do as many Mario games this season as I can on my channel. But I will NEVER do a walkthrough on this game
But of course. Sunshine is one game that's too long, too tedious and just... too time consuming.

As someone who loves this game to death and back, I respect your opinion. Getting 100% in this game is a pain in the ass. With Sonic Adventure, you got a Metal Sonic skin (and Game Gear games in the DX port), with Mario 64, you got 100 lives and a cool triple jump, with Sonic Heroes, you got Super Hard Mode, in Mario Galaxy, you had the final level and being able to play as Luigi, but in this game, you get a post card. Why not have another playable character, or some new nozzle that F.L.U.D.D. could use, or anything, or even a bonus level or like Sonic Adventure 2 did when you 100% the game, havinga throwback level. I still love this game, but the reward is awful.

I agree completely. It's a bullshit excuse for a shitty reward. Like, an extra level, overpowered F.L.U.D.D. nozzle, unlockable character, secret mode, ANYTHING that affects the gameplay, not just a postcard. I mean, if Mario Sunshine's graphics were THAT good (cause let's be honest, for Early GameCube, it's a beautiful looking game), they could've easily worked in a reward.

So, I finally finished this game. %100. Every single blue coin, every shine sprite, everything.
While I do think it's kind of bullshit how they don't reward you with anything for %100ing it, I still had tons of fun. Sunshine really is great, but the whole %100 for nothing really is frustrating.

Me! I just beat Mario Sunshine on that game.
i am, some missions sofar have been kind of irritating but overall im having a lot of fun
Everyone who played Sunshine for more than 2 hours and needs this video as a sort of therapy session for PTSD.

Mario Sunshine is great game with full of fun and amazing content and moments in a great beach island aesthetic with amazing water based scenery/aesthetic to it all. The only thing that sucks is the post game end stuff like collecting all the blue coins and a few of the shine sprites that were had ridiculous moments to obtain as all that shit's not worth it as you're not getting rewarded with nothing, other than that it's an amazing game said perfectly by johnny at, 15:11 on how great the game is.

I never get why people expect a reward in Sunshine. There was never a reward in the 3D Mario games to begin with.

The only game that has a good reward is galaxy so why do people constantly have to think there is a reward. The only reward is the journey (except Sunshine's blue coin hunting.)
Edit: Because people are too lazy too read the earlier comments, let me go in greater depth. I'm talking about the reward you get for beating the final level. That means the stuff you get for beating levels such as grand master galaxy or champions road. Plus it's like me saying the reward for me beating Mario 1 was 1-2.

That's not the proper reward. You still have 249 stars before you tackle grand master galaxy.
It's not so much the "reward", but what it took to get there. If Sunshine was nowhere near as aggravating as it was to get 100% then the postcard thing wouldn't have been a big deal.
Same thing for galaxy 2. Those 1 hit stars were a pain in the ass! I don't know why people don't bring galaxy 2 instead thanks to the grand master galaxy.

It's ironic that he's saying it's better than nothing to get Luigi's Mansion as a Mario launch title yet all he got was a postcard for completing Super Mario Sunshine 100% which was technically something but he was annoyed about that but not Luigi's Mansion.

I never understood why is many people are displeased with this game. Like you said, it's a huge step up from Mario 64 in multiple departments and is a blast to play.
It's not that the game itself is bad, far from it. But 100% the game is incredibly tiresome and tedious. And the pay off for all the stuff you had to do isn't worth it. But as Johnny said, if you play the game normally it is better that Mario64.
The road to 100% percent was just painful, blue coins and all. After all that struggle you get a fucking picture.
But that's only for 100%. Play it normally and it's not nearly that bad.

I'm loving this game so far but you're gonna need A LOT of patience with some of these shine sprites. Also, use a guide when going for the blue coins. It's not worth the headache trying to find them on your own.
His opinion on Super Mario Sunshine is pretty much similar to mine on Sonic Adventure 2 and Crash Bandicoot.
Playing through the game normally is fun. Trying to complete it 100% is not.

Judging by the comments, this is the Sonic Adventure 2 of Mario games.
Think about it.
1. People say that it's the best despite some REALLY annoying stuff in it that isn't present in latter 3D games. Adventure 2 is straight up frustrating though.
2. The story has quite some bullshit in it, even by their standards.
3. People want a sequel to it even after a decade that had at least two better games.
4. Johnny's getting a little shit because of his review being honest.
And 5. It is NOT worth getting a 100% completion for the bonus. I'm aware of Green Hill Zone in Adventure 2, but Generations pretty much puts its open mouth on a curb and stomps its head down as if it (Generations) were Edward Norton (Christ, that scene still gives me chills...) and there are some PRETTY BULLSHIT missions that'll put some people off of even trying. Adventure 1 was easier, and that involved doing all of BIG'S missions. BIG.
I'm probably missing a few more similarities. Like Johnny said though, Sunshine's pretty cool. Can't say the same for Adventure 2 though.
And again, the hate for Adventure 2 ensues.
You do realize there was a lot more than just green hill zone for Sonic Adventure 2 right? Most of the extra shit is for co-op mode so I guess it makes sense that people only focus on green hill zone...
