I will point out, even as a child the idea of Sonic in a car makes sense in a racing game. He's the fastest thing alive...unless the game bends over backwards, there's no way to believe that Sonic would lose a race if he weren't handicapped in some way.
Guess you might as well not even have a Sonic racing game in the first place then.
Would be funny to see sonic handicapped, like running backwards with 1 leg up in the air

Once you beat the stage in the main game for the first time, you unlock it in Free mode. This lets you play the entire game in a more classic, solo experience.

Especially in the end when he went on Gamestop to to get his money back and trade it for another Kinect game. Despite the fact that apparently, it was not allowed to do that anymore.

I though so too before playing it again after watching the review and holy fuck was i wrong. it's difficulty isn't in the complexity, it's in the lack of explanation of said complexity
The game isn't very complex at all to be honest. The "complexity" just comes from the game throwing so many mechanics at you, but not giving you any real explanation of said mechanics.
Brian Antoine Yeah. Gaining Air is as simple as going ham on the control stick while in the... Well, air. Huh. Never noticed that before.
In short: It isn't difficult, but the difficulty curve is a fifty-foot brick wall that gains another 20 feet starting with the third level.

You are correct on Riders being an acquired taste. I got it on PS2 as a kid during a long shopping trip and read the manual as we wandered tons of stores and drove around town. That manual prepared me for...most of the game. When I hit a wall I checked around and found the tutorial video in options and I was set. Since then I played it for a long, long time, and now I have the PC version now that my PS2 has become cumbersome to use. It's a wonderfully fun and shockingly complex racing game.
I feel that Riders is one of those games with a high learning curve, where if you can get into it, you get really into it.

Well, when I saw this video in my subscription feed, I RACED to watch it! Ha ha ha... I'll see myself out...
I really hope Johnny will look a bit deeper into Sonic Unleashed much like he did with the games he looked at when he did the last Sonic marathon, including the PS2/Wii version. Maybe even with Elliot for some Nostalgia

Personally I think Sonic Riders and Zero Gravity are the most fun Sonic racing games and my personal favorite racing game, that being said, this is coming from a person that has been playing this game for years and has gotten good at it through trial and error.
This is bad design and there should have been a way better tutorial mode other than the mission mode which is sort of supposed to be a tutorial mode I guess? But yeah I agree with Johnny for the most part.

Yeah, It sucks. It's hilarious to watch other people play it, but not fun playing it yourself. But there are tons of better racing games, and better Sonic games, as well as better Sonic Racing games. Except for Sonic R, and Sonic Drift and Sonic Drift 2. Those are maybe just as bad. I don't know, I avoided the Kinect like the fucking plague. I had a Wii, still hate motion controls. Let's be glad the Kinect is nothing but a distant memory now, my man.
Apparently SEGA kept Deem Bristow as Eggman in the races as a tribute, as he sadly passed away the year prior.
No idea why they did that for Zero Gravity, as it's even more jarring than last time because Mike Pollock did make some new lines for the new gimmicks.
Fun fact: The "Eggman Nega" from the future in the Rivals games is not truly the same Nega from Rush. It's actually Eggman's descendant, 200 years in the future. Possibly the same thing with Silver, since in the DS version of Sonic Colors, Silver says his future is not bleak and desolate but bright and cheerful. So they're both the same characters while being completely different and where was I going with this again?
If he's Eggman *Nega* as in negative, why the heck would he be from the future?

sonic riders 1 is the best sonic racing game ever made till this day it has a community of people modding it making championships making better it is in my opinion better than any other sonic racing game ever coz it really captures the idea of sonic standing on a hoverboard and beingfast with it

I'm gonna be honest, I had NO problems learning Sonic Riders when I first picked it up. Some mechanics you learn later in the game, some you figure out by yourself, and he tutorial helped a lot. So I'm not sure what problems Johnny had. Not trying to be mean, just...pointing out it's not that hard for some people

It's not worth thinking too much about, my man. If Sega doesn't care, it's pretty difficult to care about Sonic though.
Eggman Nega is basically Nega-Eggman Negative counterpart to be exact from a parallel world which is blazes but then retconed in the rivals games after that iizuka reinforced it so it's canon
I had no problem with Free Riders, mainly because I somehow worked around the wonky controls. You cannot just stand straight up and lean back and forth, you gotta position yourself to look you're actually riding a skateboard, knees slightly bent and boom lmao

Sonic Drift series was pretty fun as a kid. Never played either rivals... and the Sonic Riders series can go fuck itself as the controls got far worse each time...

I never understood the "why does sonic use a car if he can run fast" question. He uses a Car because that's the rule of the race and it'd be unfair for him to beat everyone by running.
That is the whole point is to use cars
MrBKainX Plus in transformed, we're introduced to the sky and sea as part of the race track and I doubt that'd be easy for Sonic given the level contraction.

I actually find that Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed does more for me than Mario Kart 8. MK8 is still a phenomenal game, but there just seems to be more meat to the experience in Transformed and on top of that, it handles kartracing physics a little better (such as when you collide with a wall on the track) and the items don't seem as overbearing a part of the experience. That and the transformations do more for the racing than the antigrav mode that MK8 implemented, which is really just a visual trick, and are more interesting than the short gliding sequences in MK8, too.
Not that this is why I bought the game, I actually was lucky enough to win Transformed on Steam in a Raptr raffle. So, go me.

Transformed when I first played it I found superior to MK7, but the amount of content MK8 has with its DLC...those two are neck and neck for me.
Technically speaking there's a lot less tracks in Transformed (it's...really only 20 at base with barely any DLC tracks anyway, though I appreciate being allowed to race on Mirror tracks without the AI set to *MAXIMUM EFFORT*), but the mod mechanic gives me an incentive to learn how each racer handles instead of saying "Mario, Mii, Link, I'm good."
Fuck, playing as Vyse makes me ache for Skies of Arcadia having an HD re-release that Sega fucking refuses to make despite *CALLING BACK VYSE'S VOICE ACTOR AND MAKING THAT GAME'S DESIGNER FUCKING CRY LIKE A BABY FOR HOW BEAUTIFUL THE LEVEL IS.*

Thank you Lewis, I knew I wasn't the only one who thought that! I confess I never played Mario Kart 8, but from what I have seen, it is not as complex and fun as Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed. Truth be told, if I eventually buy the Nintendo Switch, I will surely buy MK8 Deluxe as well, it looks like a great racing game, but man I wish I could see a sequel to Sonic & All Stars Racing Transformed.

IGN gave Sonic Free Riders a 7.5 out of 10. Think about that. That means (in IGN's eyes) Sonic Free Riders is better than Sonic Unleashed, Sonic Lost World, Sonic Riders, Sonic Riders Zero Gravity, Sonic 4 Episode 2, and Sonic and the Black Knight. WHY???!!!!

And this game would technically be worse than 06 because at least in 06, you play the game with an actual controller and you can move wherever the hell you want, whenever the hell you want.

So I have a story about Sonic Free Riders. So my college held a tournament on it because people can suggest games, so I decided “hey why not I’ll see what this is like.” And I played as Knuckles cuz-do-u know-da-wae and used the motorcycle. All of the sudden Knuckles completely stopped randomly, so I pelvic thrusted in order to get him to move and he did, and I somehow won the race by air-humping the TV

If it wasn't it might have actually been good, and it wouldn't have killed the entire Riders series.

Chaotix is an odd game. Not just gameplay-wise but also how you can ONLY play it with a 32X. There are no ports of the game. Me thinks if a fan gifts him a 32X he would do a video on it, like he did for the PS1. (Though I feel like he would only do it if he also had a Sega CD.)

I didn't have too much difficulty with the motion controls, but I still abandoned them in favor of the GameCube controller.

I always thought Sonic Riders (the first one) was underrated. It was a good game.
Nikyle McIntosh I thought that it was a good game as well, just the air meter was a bit annoying.
Dead Short I never had a problem with it.
Teon Windley I have had a few occasions where it got in the way but my main issue was that it feels a rather unnecessary inclusion. When I got used to it after the first stage it just felt like a random bar that occasionally bleeps which made it annoying. I didn't have to go in the running phase though.
Dead Short I do agree that the air meter wasn't necessary but a part of me did like running and winning the race anyway.
Teon Windley I can understand that. Although, for some reason, Sonic moves slower running that he does on the board. For everyone else I can understand but Sonic and Shadow are speedsters. They move as fast as me in the morning.

There's many games that get a million times better in multiplayer, with the single player being kind of dull after a while. In fact many games released these days fall under that
Sonic Riders is a strongly made video game, but the problem with it is when Wave the Swallow bullied Amy Rose like a stereotypical mean girl bullying another teenage girl who made her crush look far inferior to her for not loving her back.

To be completely honest Riders and Zero Gravity are games with steep learning curves but once you learn them that's when the game is fun. You have to take in a lot to get a lot from the game and it's honesty what I enjoy about the game. It's fun and frantic and hell you race as fast as you can but also have to bare in mind what you can do as in the original Rider's case you need to keep Air filled up and in Zero Gravity it's best enjoyed with a Gamecube Controller to get the most fun out of it or of course the PS2 Version. As for Free Riders...That game should'ved allowed for control with an actual controller since motion controls weren't even needed and I'm pissed since that game killed off the Riders spin offs for Sonic.
The saddest thing is that it would've been fine had it just not been on Kinect. A really cocky, ignorant move as opposed to bold, and daring.

Sonic Riders was definitely more fun once you got the hang of it. I was bored and frustrated with it at first before learning the mechanics.
Maybe because he's more used to racers that don't have so much mechanics as the Riders Series has since let's be honest Riders is difficult to learn for those who have zero experience with the formula.
The Mechanics have a big learning curve but once learned the games both Riders and Zero Gravity are great just play Zero Gravity with a Controller as in Gamecube Controller if you have the original Wii version or the PS2 version.

As a kid, I thought Riders was the coolest god damn thing. I remember daydreaming about riding an air board down the school hallway like "later fuckerz!!". But even back then, this game was hard as fuck to me. Took me forever to beat the last race in Babyloanian Nickelodeon Bolognian or whatever the fuck it was called. One hell of a learning curve to it, but the multiple boards and soundtrack kept me coming back. Gotta lot of nostalgia for that shiny turd.

The Riders series is really underrated and needs another game after that crap that was Free Riders. Honestly one of my favorite racing games that relied on morose being good at the game than luck of the draw with items like Mario Kart it.

Riders can keep going, Free Riders killed it. They were great games, and honestly felt more fun than Mario Kart to me. Mario Kart type racers are to chaotic and feel luck based with the items you get dictating whether you win or lose, having played Riders, knowing the controls and knowing how to play is the deciding factor as to whether you win or lose.

I unlocked all of the boards in that game on Xbox... Never unlocked most of the unlockable characters though, because mission mode was really boring to me.

I don't blame Johnny for his thoughts on the first game's steep learning curve, it is something that takes a lot of practice and some trial and error to figure out the best ways through all the courses with their mechanics. I managed it a long time ago and what I learned has stuck with me, hence why I say it's a quick game to master once you've got the technique figured out. Riders ZG by comparison I can never feel like what I learned while playing the game does more than keep my head above water while playing. The mechanics are far simpler to pick up and grasp, but at the same time I don't feel confident that what I have to work with is enough to really help push me through the game on a professional level. Oh, and unless you hate yourself don't bother trying to unlock higher end gears, in regular races the AI opponents will more often than not use those gears themselves to far greater effect than you could possibly conceive! Free Riders I would avoid like the plague... not that it's hard when I never owned any kind of Xbox or the stupid Kinect thing. Simple and to the point: Fuck the Kinect, and the entire stupid idea behind it.

Devasia Mentality I personally thought that Zero Gravity was pretty easy to master. Granted, I've never played the first one so I can't compare it but for the many years of my childhood spent playing the game, I always feel confident while playing it (and I played it with a Wii Mote because I was a dumb kid and didn't know that you could use GameCube controllers). I ended up getting very used to the motion controls so I stuck with them anyway. Anyway, I found so satisfying to gravity dive and bounce off of objects, getting your special and taking all the shortcuts, using the different extreme, and I'd literally just open the game up and go to the BGM section just to listen to all the amazing music that game had. Sadly, I scratched one too many times and I can't play it anymore, but it'll always have a place in my heart. Loved it.
My lack of confidence with ZG is more with regards to the simplicity of the controls and how various techniques from the previous game were altered, simplified, or outright omitted. The gravity mechanic adds it's own flare, but at the same time I find it more limiting in it's utility than boosting or drifting is in the first game. If you say you mastered it I won't argue that you're wrong, I've spent somewhat less time with ZG than the first game and just never felt as comfortable with it.
Devasia Mentality See since I've never played the first game, none of that seemed like a problem to me. If the Riders ever gets a fourth game, I hope they combine the best of both worlds. I believe Free Riders, which I actually played for some reason, did bring back a lot of the mechanics from the first game, air for example, I kinda wish it had gear changes to build up your abilities rather than having it all from the get go. Too bad they didn't give a controller option because it could've been a half decent game. Story would have still sucked though (still images that change expression with voice acting? Sonic Rivals 2 for the PSP called, it wants it's cutscenes back). Actually, Rivals 2 had a much better story so that insulting that game.

Wow I just realized something about they overwhelming factor john was talking about. I love sonic riders and I used to spend hours on it but when I brought over to my friends house when were kids and all of us got together to play they were really confused about how to play I had to do a lot of explaining of mechanics in the game so much they eventually quit and went back to smash brothers wow john you just helped come to a understanding thanks lol
