I take it you played this game or its sequel? I played both. Never beat both. Got further on Ecco 2. Ecco 1, I got stuck on the second level. Ecco Jr? 100& on hard mode. Fun game, but too short. Surprisingly challenging.
Same here. I find myself going back and watching the sonic reviews every now and then, the content is great, funny, and is a great listen if your busy playing a game, and, they are a delicious 40 mins long. Not only do I love the rants from a review standpoint, I love them as pure entertainment value too, seeing a known bad game get a chunky review tells me, im in for a good time!
5:56 “And these godforsaken trilobites that never let up, I’M GLAD YOU’RE EXTINCT!” Underrated outburst. This is easily one of my favorite reviews of Johnny’s and one that I revisit a lot. 7:00-7:16 also cracks me up.
"No More, Ecco died saving his family, a true dolphin hero! Now get this shit out of my Genesis." I just disturbed a lot of my coworkers with my raucous laughter.
Hey Johnny, this is my favourite review of yours, I too was sh*t scared of this game and all water levels in games (when the big fish goes after you in Jak and dexter lol) fantastic review buddy, keep up the good work
Lol I knew I wasn't alone in being scared shitless of water in games, cause of Jak and Daxter with the shark fish x.x everytime coming up and swallowing you whole like it's nothing but a snack
One hell of an accurate review! There is much to be appreciated in this game but watching you play it brought back all the anxiety and nightmarish claustrophobia that kept me from finishing it myself. The scenery and atmospheric soundtrack is calming but unnerving at the same time. This game is truly one of a kind. Maybe that's a good thing
I completely relate as Ecco scarred me as a child as well, Johnny. Ecco the Dolphin is a haunting, terrifying game. While it may not be exactly...easy to play, I still think the original Ecco (and Tides of Time, maybe to a lesser extent) is somewhat of a masterpiece in terms of its extremely potent atmosphere, feeling of isolation, and trippy concept. It's certainly unique and I think is definitely at least worth checking out.
the sound of Ecco taking damage is legitimately ear-grating and uncomfortable to listen to. like, shit, they really tried to make that sound as distressed as possible. definitely gets the point across
I'm sure you've heard this before, but the original game has a Sega CD "enhanced" version which fixes a lot of the difficulty issues, by introducing stuff like checkpoints. It also has an incredible soundtrack that really helps sell the underwater setting
When you put Bubsy out of that box at the end of the video, I bursted out laughing. I seem to enjoy the suffering of others. Maybe I should be concerned.
Johnny, you're not the only person who was terrified of this game. My older brother was terrified of this as well. I wasn't scared of it for some reason. At 4 years old it was the only thing I had over my brother. I used it as a way to mess with him and/or get him to leave the room when I wanted. Yeah, I was a bastard.
You know, speaking of surprisingly terrifying video games, my older sister became terrified of Chicken Run on the PC. And she was only watching our Dad play it. Actually, it wasn't the game itself that terrified her, it was the game over screen in the first level: when the guard dog captures you, the game goes into a close-up of his growling voice with a very dramatic failure song plays. I think I remember her telling me she envisioned the dog holding the sign and saying something. And this is the girl that was cool with watching our Dad play Bad Mojo: The Roach Game Redux where a cutscene concerning a woman dying in childbirth scared ME. Come to think of it, both of us were also kinda cool with watching him play one of The Witcher Project games, so maybe we both have messed up scare triggers.
Yup! Couldn't be more correct. After a smoke I still found it hard to get my head around the plot... The shit with the Aliens completely threw me off lol!

Then I played MM, already knowing how great it is, finally having a chance to try it a couple years after its release. After taking a while to get into the Bomber's Hideout, I finally get there, but it's so dark that I get lost pretty quick. So I go into FPS mode to figure out where I am and BAM, I get to one and only spider enemy in the that area, first one in the game, smack dab in the face, where I wind up frantically mashing buttons to kill it....and then immediately stop playing. So now I can't play any of the main 3D Zeldas, I'm now retroactively phobic towards any game that does the spider jump scare B.S., or even has them scurrying around. On top of that even, the Skulltula's tendrils are black and yellow, like a bee's....guess what fucking repeated itself in Donkey Kong 64? WELP, guess I won't be playing those either!
***** In those too, eh? In MM, the gold ones are relegated to 1 location, while in OOT, it's a sidequest spanning the entire game. It doesn't matter anyway, the damage is done, and I already know the normal versions are Goomba-level mooks, showing up everywhere. I've experienced the former games well enough anyway, thanks to my older sis beating OOT and getting up to Stone Temple in MM (I fought Majora thanks to Action Replay on GC at another point). She usually let me take care of the bosses if I was around, even the final Ganon fights.
Kyle Campbell They're not in the Hero of Winds timeline games. It's not a completely lost cause though, as I beat Resident Evil 1 a couple years ago. The SGB and 2BFP LPs of RE2 are good enough for me, though. There's that entire sequence starting with the sewers where the game basically says, "You have arachnophobia? Well FUCK YOUR SHIT." Well, fuck, a you.
no spiders in wind waker but there are the moth monsters. Mothula. Not creepy. In Skyward Sword one time a skulltula advanced toward link during a cut scene in skyview temple and it was attacking link when the cut scene was over. Startled the crap out of me.
I'm not aqua phobic, but I do find the sea scary for some reason, and this series is a good example on how to make the sea scary. Also, I can't wait for the next review. We need JonTron in this!

One of your best reviews in a while. I can't remember the last time I laughed this hard at a Johnny vs. review. It just seems like over this past year your content's gotten a lot shorter and the humor's gotten a little sparse. Of course, your writing and analysis have remained pretty strong, but it feels like something about your content hasn't been the same over the past year or so. Not to say it was bad, not at all. Just... different in a way I can't easily describe. Something about this video reminded me of the SGB review days and earlier Johnny vs. episodes. So next time's Bubsy, eh? Gotta stay tuned for that one.
One of the worst things I hate about the first Ecco game, is that, on a TV commercial for the Mega Drive, they, clearly, stated that it's one of the best games that you could EVER play! Only when I played it, I had ABSOLUTELY no idea of what I was doing! Even after I, finally, activated the cutscene where your whole family is sucked away, I, still, had NO FLIPPING IDEA what I had to do to escape the area I was stuck in!! ARRRRRRGGGGGGGHHHHHHH!!!! DX
You perfectly captured the feelings I had as a kid playing ECCO. It scared the shit out of me and I never got far. Just ECCO alone in that sea, scary music...poor guy :(
Thanks for this great video. I was laughing at how absolutely right you were. I owned Ecco 1&2 on the Genesis but only beat 2. I struggled for such a long time with 1, and finally made it to the Vortex Queen only to get dumped back out into Welcome to the Machine. At that point I removed the game and never looked back. When the game was released on Xbox 360 as part of the Sega Vintage Collection, I was finally able to beat it thanks to the save feature. The game was fascinating and haunting. Once the story really opened up in the Atlantis levels I found it very interesting but man was that a brutal and unforgiving game. Keep up the great work, liked and subbed!
Bless you, Johnny! I was always curios about this series, woundering if I missed out on something whenever I heard the name. This wasn't only informative, but also entertaining as hell! This might become one of my favorite reviews of yours! You are a true gaming hero, Johnny! *Salute*
You're not the only one who's Aquaphobic in video games Johnny! The first time I encountered the Ichthyosaur in Half-Life 1, I *immediately* shut the game off and it took over a year to work up the courage to play it again. I'm not even joking here!
@@retrogamelord3763 yeah my friend goes nuts over this game. It being about aliens and all. I just see it as a beautiful memory into my childhood. But I did just watch a video about the reasoning behind this game. Pretty intense
The ecco the dolphin games are worth experiencing in my opinion. They have a psychodelic vibe that no other in that era has. They are games that rejected all tropes and decided to do their own weird thing with their own universe. And the Sega CD music is so good, so atmospheric, almost like DKC music at times. But play them with save states or with a rewind feature... just bypass the difficulty with cheats. The games are good, but not so good as to play them with no checkpoints and very unfair deaths.
That's the gayest way to describe a game, no offense. If I didn't already play the game myself, this description of it would've instantly killed all interest.
7:59 "If someone tries to touch you in a place, or in a way that makes you feel uncomfortable, that's no good!" - Sonic Says Thanks for reminding me that, Johnny. 😂
Strangely enough i think Ecco the dolphin would work as a movie It has an interesting enough lore that I think it would make a pretty good movie Ironically enough sega seems to make Better movie concepts than video game concepts
1:00 It was the middle of the night... I was watching the Johnny Vs playlist... I was about to fall asleep... then... BAM!!! YOU SCARED THE LIVING SHIT OUT OF ME!!!
both: logically it's a great way to get it to a child past the parent (I mean even abusive parents would probably get their kids games to distract them) but it's very unsettling due to the subject matter
Scott Elder It was a time when child abuse was known and acknowledged but not to the mass hysteria and paranoid that we know it today. And it was all part of a large drive to force "educational" subjects within children media. I still remember a Ninja Turtle '87 PSA about brushing your teeth.
Kyle Campbell its strange that a very crappy game was even considered to have its own show.. and its based of adventure of sonic.. a crappy show, but was probably better recieved among kids back then and battletoads made sense, but after seeing the animated atrocity on it, i see why the pilot was dropped, the show sucked almost as much as the difficulty of the game(the shows that suck equally to the hardness of the game is bread..no it sucks more)
I actually had a somewhat similar experience with the first Ecco. I played it when I was older, but I had (and still have) a pretty big fear of large bodies of water. The game really accentuated the exact thing that make me scared (the vastness of the ocean, the loneliness, the echoing sounds, the scary soundscapes, the giant unknown, etc.) so the experience was mostly uncomfortable for me as well. Well, that and the fact that it's EXTREMELY tough. However, I always admired the devs for trying to bring us something else in a time when it was oh so easy to make another action/platformer for the Mega Drive. Ecco's atmosphere, controls, story, the way you interacted with the world... It was all pretty different and a little daring. I don't like the games very much, but I'll always respect it for what it was trying to do.
Loved the review. This is one of my favourite games on Genesis since I was 6. And yes, it really is terrifying. The Machine level with the alien things and that boss at the end were scary as hell but the game keeps you really utterly anxious from the very beginning. And guess what, I still can't beat it in one shot.
Another one of my favorite reviews. Definitely one of the most interesting ones too for how a game like this one brought so much fear to kids, not just you. And I lost it when I saw Bubsy.
The eerie music, the frustration, the trippy story, that TERRIFYING alien queen... it haunted the hell outta my child self, but it's also the reason why my 43-year-old self still loves this game now...
I once played Ecco the Dolphin when I was a kid & I honestly had no fear for this game, nor the surroundings. Then again, I had no idea what I was even doing in the first place!
I didn't expect you to review the entire series, that was a nice surprise for sure. As a result you also gave a fairly detailed opinion on defender of the future, which I was definitely looking forward to since you mentioned it on Brainscratch that one time. So I'm pretty happy. Thanks.
You're not alone Johnny. I saw the Vortex queen in a Sega Mega Drive game guide and I was like "NOPE!" and so, I never went back to it. Thanks for the video!
I was like 5 when I played Ecco and I could never figure out what to do, so I would just swim around for a bit before going back to Mortal Kombat or Sonic.
Cameron Newton I was honestly scared of Shadow Mario when I was a kid. That close up shot of him coupled with that electric guitar riff remix of the Underground theme did NOT resonate well with me and every time I tried to sleep at night, I saw his fucking face, screamed and hid under my covers. My mom would come into my room and wonder what was wrong and when I told her, she just told me to stop overreacting and go to sleep. After I found out Shadow Mario was really just Bowser Jr. in disguise, I got over that fear. Quite the tale, I know.
If it makes you feel better, younger me was terrified of Ecco the Dolphin, and the biggest reason for it was the blue whale, and younger me just refused to go anywhere near it.
I can't say that this game gave me my fear of underwater creatures and the watery depths themselves, but I can definitely say it helped. It also gave me a huge appreciation for what a soundtrack can do for a game at such a young age.
You describing the scenario with your 7 year old self made me think of you as Courage the Cowardly Dog and Ecco the Dolphin as Eustice. I had a similar experience with Sonic the Hedgehog 2, in particular any time I had to go in the water. Not that I minded traversing through it so much, but you're just going through, listening to the stage music, and suddenly the music changes to a warning that seemed about 3 times louder than anything else in the game as a countdown of how long you had to get to the surface or an air bubble ticked away. I get that's it's supposed to be a life-threatening, frantic moment, but did it really have to be so loud? I still powered through it and beat it repeatedly because I still enjoyed the game very much, but it was a moment that always made me tense up as a kid.
I had this on game gear and somehow beat it back in the day. This game definitely understood the term "atmosphere" if anything, but I still think the actual plot was what made me love it. It almost felt like a Spielberg movie in a certain way and the sense of mystery, grandeur, and, pardon the pun, other-worldliness, really captivated my young mind.
LMAO! "NO MORE!!! ECHO DIED SAVING HIS FAMILY!! A TRUE DOLPHIN HERO!!! Get this s**t out of my genesis!!!" Best part!!
Him saluting during that part made it even more hilarious 😂
sad but hilarious
The creator of Ecco the Dolphin actually said he enjoyed this review lol
Wait. Where did you see this?
Thanks.
Great. It shows a good understanding of criticism.
Any word if there will ever be an Ecco sequel ?? :'(
Aj no this series is thankfully done. I hope Sega doesn’t continue either. That all is better off left in the past.

DX
same when i first played it on the genisis colection i had no idea how to beat the first level
You perfectly captured the feelings I had as a kid playing ECCO. It scared the shit out of me and I never got far. Just ECCO alone in that sea, scary music...poor guy :(
7:27 NO MORE! Ecco died saving his family! A true dolphin hero! Get this shit outta my Genesis!
*Salute*
so john whens the ecco the dolphin LP for SGB? :D
You guys love misery huh?
You're not the only one who's Aquaphobic in video games Johnny!
The first time I encountered the Ichthyosaur in Half-Life 1, I *immediately* shut the game off and it took over a year to work up the courage to play it again. I'm not even joking here!
Ecco the dolphin is such a scary game tbh.
How?
@@tolerants231 The music and the way it presents itself is very unsettling
@@retrogamelord3763 yeah my friend goes nuts over this game. It being about aliens and all. I just see it as a beautiful memory into my childhood. But I did just watch a video about the reasoning behind this game. Pretty intense
Phanasy Star 3: Hold my beer.
No, this can't be the end of Tails Doll. He didn't even appear. There is still more, he still needs his revenge. He must make you play Desert Bus.
6 years later and he’s back
Fun fact: the Ecco the Dolphin cover art is by Boris Vallejo. Not joking.
Who?
SteveDoidoUltimate
Really well-known fantasy illustrator, also did the cover for Golden Axe II.
+CruelestChris you mean that incredibly ugly cover?
+Giordan Diodato The cover is awesome, what the fuck?
@@GiordanDiodato I thought y ok u said it was ugly
Is it bad that the new Balan Wonderworld trailer featuring a girl getting traumatized by dolphins made me go back to rewatch this video?

"If someone tries to touch you in a place, or in a way that makes you feel uncomfortable, that's no good!"
- Sonic Says
Thanks for reminding me that, Johnny. 😂
Strangely enough i think Ecco the dolphin would work as a movie
It has an interesting enough lore that I think it would make a pretty good movie
Ironically enough sega seems to make Better movie concepts than video game concepts

It was the middle of the night...
I was watching the Johnny Vs playlist...
I was about to fall asleep...
then...
BAM!!! YOU SCARED THE LIVING SHIT OUT OF ME!!!
Cracked up when Johnny said "ECHO DIED TRYING TO SAVE HIS FAMILY - A BRAVE DOLPHIN TO THE END FUCK THIS GMAE"
cannot believe this review is now a year old..........
WTF?!
has it really been a year now? damn time flies sometimes.
+demonzero677 ikr
The Yoshi Terminator Can't believe this comment is almost a year old.
The best worst channel on UA-cam Yeah, time has flown
I watched this review so much growing up I can quote every word. This was my childhood.
They put child abuse support cards in games?....huh....can't tell if that's a smart tactic or a rather odd one...
both: logically it's a great way to get it to a child past the parent (I mean even abusive parents would probably get their kids games to distract them) but it's very unsettling due to the subject matter
"Hey kids don't get raped!"
Putting a child abuse support card in an Ecco game makes sense. It gives you a place to talk to once you're done playing Ecco.
Scott Elder
It was a time when child abuse was known and acknowledged but not to the mass hysteria and paranoid that we know it today. And it was all part of a large drive to force "educational" subjects within children media. I still remember a Ninja Turtle '87 PSA about brushing your teeth.
Ligtning Dog lol They knew how traumatizing Ecco is.
Bubsy.

That goddamn quote is just tempting as all hell.
"What could possibly go wrong?" I fuckin love that Jontron episode.
For any Bubsy haters (a.k.a any sane person) check out the dropped Bubsy pilot
Kyle Campbell :P Mr. Enter fan, eh?
Kyle Campbell its strange that a very crappy game was even considered to have its own show..
and its based of adventure of sonic.. a crappy show, but was probably better recieved among kids back then
and battletoads made sense, but after seeing the animated atrocity on it, i see why the pilot was dropped, the show sucked almost as much as the difficulty of the game(the shows that suck equally to the hardness of the game is bread..no it sucks more)
Yep I watch enter
5:55 "IM GLAD YOU'RE EXTINCT !" Lmfao this is amazing
Oh God, I'm in tears. This is some of your best work, Johnny.
Didn't play this game until I got Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection, never got far.
This is a series that could totally use a remake with a Metroidvania style.
This game TERRIFIED ME as a kid. I didn't get past the part where the family gets abducted lmao
Why does everyone hate you, Jonny? Their have only been 2 or 3 good games throughout this entire marathon.
Thanks.
Still one of my favorite reviews.

DEATH SONAR TO THE *EYES.*
You're not alone Johnny. I saw the Vortex queen in a Sega Mega Drive game guide and I was like "NOPE!" and so, I never went back to it. Thanks for the video!
those arctic levels were nuts.. the aesthetic of the music and graphics for that section always rocked my sox as a kid.
I was like 5 when I played Ecco and I could never figure out what to do, so I would just swim around for a bit before going back to Mortal Kombat or Sonic.
john I feel your pain when I was young I was scared of that one super Mario sunshine level when you fight the eel
Welcome to the Machine. shit now i have to listen to Wish You Were Here all the way through.
I got an ad as soon as he jumped out of the water. Spookalicious.
150 thousand subscribers. God damn. He has almost twice that amount now, and it just shows how far this man has come. Congrats Johnny.

+danny fonseca To give you the answer, no, it didn't.
If it makes you feel better, younger me was terrified of Ecco the Dolphin, and the biggest reason for it was the blue whale, and younger me just refused to go anywhere near it.
7:23 funny enough that’s what you’re supposed to do, after knocking the vortex queen’s jaw off you’re supposed to ram into it.
I can't say that this game gave me my fear of underwater creatures and the watery depths themselves, but I can definitely say it helped. It also gave me a huge appreciation for what a soundtrack can do for a game at such a young age.
I'm here after AVGN's episode
0:03 Johnny, PLEASE tell me where you got that Samus poster!!!!
"NO MORE! ECCO DIED SAVING HIS FAMILY! A TRUE DOLPHIN HERO! GET THIS SHIT OUT OF MY GENESIS!"
Literally my favorite youtuber, I love this guy
Ecco 2 soundtrack is amazing! The time traveling music was playing in my nightmare when I was a kid. :P
Just found this channel and I noticed your posters
I like you
Just gotta love that 'Genesis twang'
One of my favorite reviews. Thank you Johnny
