+Hylian Alchemist Thats fair. I dont hate DK64, but I dont know if I could call it a bad game. Im not a fan of collectathons anyway, so it could be a bias.

Johnny: If for whatever reason Charles would leave his role as Mario, the next guy would probably just do his best to simulate Martinet's voice. PlatformChef: We will find out soon enough when Super Mario Bros. Wonder comes out.
It's much MUCH harder to notice when playing on the N64 as opposed to any other platform. Mario doesn't switch to his low-poly model until he's too small to render in detail with the N64's low resolution. By the time he's far away enough to switch models, he's already just an indistinguishable handful of pixels. It's only noticeable when you're playing on an emulator, like the virtual console or a PC emulator, that you can clearly see Mario's lower-poly model thanks to the higher resolution.

You're also about to review my all time favorite Mario game. I look forward to what you have to review. Even if it is my favorite, I take note of it's flaws as well. Can't wait, Johnny! My heart goes out to Johnny for inevitably 100% clearing Sunshine when he plays it. The blue coins are always far worse than you think they're going to be. ;_;
I will always respect Super Mario 64 for what it did for the franchise, but I would play any 3D Mario game except 3D Land over 64, as well as Super Mario World. I don't see it as a bad game, but more of an old classic, that was indeed a good game at launch, but has gained issues because later games improved, not because it was bad. I feel the same about Pokemon Red and Blue, as well as Ocarina Of Time. Not bad games, but old classics that have been improved upon since release.
Is it bad Sunshine is my favourite single-player platformer? (Multiplayer might goes to 3d World). I loved the vacation theme and actually liked the voice acting. I'd be all for a sequel that irons out its flaws, with possible multiplayer and a fleshed out story. But Sunshine really tried to do something different.
Sunshine was great. I liked it better than 64. And yes, I played 64 first. I like Galaxy 1, 2 and 3D World were better than Sunshine IMO but, I'd play Sunshine over 3D Land.
awesomeguy2009 well it kinda depends. The 64 is much smother but it is kinda dated. The ds version looks better, and has more to do, but like johnny said, the control is still kinda stiff, even on the 3ds. So it depends on if u would like less to do, but a smother control. Or more to do, and r ok with controls that r kinda stiff.
I liked Sunshine. Honestly I can agree with people that Sunshine is kinda bullshit for completions sake, but honestly. It's so much more interesting than Mario 64's levels. In a Mario 64 level I feel more like I'm going through a level where in Sunshine I am more pulled in by the level. I think the fact that Isle Delfino was the Hub World was a bad and good idea. Good in the sense that it was neat to explore and find hidden things, bad in the sense that you shouldn't be getting Shine Sprites from the inhabitants. Shines hidden in the town, fine, being given to you by Piantas? Inexcusable.
Agreed, plus the fact you buy them with blue coins was always really weird to me. I just loved how all the main characters were more developed in this game, you felt that they were really all in this together when they moved around town (and let's be honest, you were the only one with F.L.U.D.D to clean the town). It also would have been nice to have FLUDD be earned through the story, rather than just sitting on the floor at the start of the game. Even so, the music, theme, levels and so forth were things I loved. They even changed the common enemies like Boos, Bullet Bills, Bob-ombs, Koopas, etc. To show you weren't in the Mushroom Kingdom and they were different species for a more tropic setting (yet Galaxy had the same designs even though it was in space).
Yeah, buying the Shine Sprites shouldn't have been something you had to do, in fact the blue coins basically don't even need to exist. I know people argue that games have pointless collectables, well the blue coins are a collectible that shouldn't have a point. What would have been cool is if you could use blue coins for upgrades to F.L.U.D.D. And that the Fludd attachments were instead switchable instead of having to find them in the levels. Less situational than the hats in Mario 64, but still fairly situational. I feel like Galaxy is just riding off the, space gravity gimmick. Don't get me wrong, Galaxy is fun, but I spend half of the time in a level just being launched to and from planets. The area's a nice to look at, but I don't feel like there's any need to explore. And if you've ever played it with a second player the game gets really easy cause the second player can essentially just freeze enemies.
I recently played through Mario 64 for the first time in years and I couldn't agree more about how frustrating and cumbersome the camera is, I lost count of just how many times I fell to my death all because of that damn camera! :)
Ha! Decided to rewatch this after the Super Mario 3D All-Stars announcement, and I got an ad for that very game. Speaking of which, I wonder if they’ve added full camera control to the Switch version since it has two analogue sticks compared to the N64’s one. Time will tell...
I actually like the DS version more. Some of the character models in 64 (Unagi in particular) scared the shit out of me. I couldn't play Jolly Roger Bay, Dire Dire Docks, or Wet-Dry World for the life of me. That, and I spent DAYS, just screwing around in Ds' rec room.
I watch Johnny vs the World videos, SGBLikestoPlay, Clementj642, and Brainscratch more than I watch any TV show. Keep it up, these reviews are always great!
It actually does make sense that Wario was invited as well According to the well known comic series that came with with incredibly beloved NES game, Mario and Wario, Peach is actually good friends with him.
9:57 Yeah... The eel scared me shitless too as a kid! Well played Johnny, and a great review! As for Super Mario Sunshine... SPOILERS Have A Great Summer Vacation! END SPOILERS...
My favorite Mario game of all time and one of my favorite games period. It might just be nostalgia bias, but it is the quintessential fun experience. I can pick this game up any time, any day of the week and feel like a kid again. Mario's movement, especially the snappy long jump, is just so incredibly satisfying. Despite the awkwardness of the N64 controller and barring the pressure-sensitive analog stick movement, I think Mario controls better here than in Sunshine or Galaxy. Maybe it's just me, but I find his movement too slippery in the former (despite the better camera) and his movement too limited and stiff in the latter. Things do get kinda rough in the last third of Mario 64, as I don't particularly like the stages Tiny Huge Island, Tick Tock Clock, or Rainbow Ride (especially the God forsaken 100 coin missions, which suck in every stage except Whomp's Fortress), but overall, the game is brilliant. Most people will say that it has aged, probably to the point of being archaic and hard to go back to, but I don't care. It's my comfort game and I love it.

So many good memories with Super Mario 64... it makes me want to cry.
My heart goes out to Johnny for inevitably 100% clearing Sunshine when he plays it. The blue coins are always far worse than you think they're going to be. ;_;
7:53 I 100% Super Mario 64 the day that I picked up 3D All-Stars.
Be sure to take your time with the other games dude. Don’t rush or the fun won’t last that long!
@@Komodo772 I just finished 100% Sunshine when I saw your comment.
@@Gamer1288 I was too late lol
All these years later... 7:26 is still my favorite part of any video on UA-cam. God bless you, Johnny.
Always love going back to this video
This is still my favorite Mario game and it's still as fun to play now as it was when it came out in 1998 👍

3D land sucked balls.
ElectricGamerYT It was like arcade fun to me
3D Land was fun but when I played it again, it just felt empty
I feel the same way about the first Metal Gear Solid
yeah, ocarina of time is a little too non linear. not in a good way.
I love that part with Mario and Johnny
Mario:"Nice computer you've got here. Can I have it?"
Johnny: "NO!" lols
Every time I make it to this part of the playlist, the intro song tickles me in all the right ways.
Cheers, J-Man.
I love how his desktop background is always the game he reviews
Little details
2:53 Miyamoto hilariously fucked up by telling us that Chris Pratt can take on that role...
First review I've seen of this without nostalgia blindness involved, it was really welcomed to see an actual fair review good work man
14:12. that didn't age well.
Man 9+ years on and i still remember the eel bit, thats some tight writing there.
3:00 well nearly ten years later were at the point
I recently played through Mario 64 for the first time in years and I couldn't agree more about how frustrating and cumbersome the camera is, I lost count of just how many times I fell to my death all because of that damn camera! :)
FYI, during the title scene with the giant 3D Mario, you can lock his deformations in place using the R shoulder button.
14:13 who would've ever thought that one day this part would age poorly lol
''Luigi is no where to be found no matter what internet rumors tell you''
2020 Nintendo gigaleak: *laughs*
It's nearly 3 am, and I was just about to finally go to bed. Thanks a lot, Johnny.
You could watch it when u wake up
NOPE!
More power to you, if I was in your position I would probably fall asleep watching the review due to lack of sleep.
Typing from the future to say you were dead right about this 2:59
Am I the only one who feels really weird that this marathon happened nearly *TWO* years ago?
You think that’s bad, to me it happened 4 years ago.
@@michaelrhett4958 now *5* years
3:02 Who’s here after hearing the news?
Ha! Decided to rewatch this after the Super Mario 3D All-Stars announcement, and I got an ad for that very game.
Speaking of which, I wonder if they’ve added full camera control to the Switch version since it has two analogue sticks compared to the N64’s one. Time will tell...
I broke my face smiling when I saw this in my subscriptions feed.
9:56 lmfao lol that was great! Johnny cracks me the hell up all the time 😂
I actually like the DS version more.
Johnny, you did it again. This review is amazing! So much detail. Also, Charles is love, Charles is life.
Oh, and happy birthday.
9:45 XP BEST PART!
GOD DAMN
9:57 Fornagi
Johnny to mario 2014 fuck you
3:00 Welp...
You are so amazing Johny XD. Every time you do a review, it never bore me.
It actually does make sense that Wario was invited as well
According to the well known comic series that came with with incredibly beloved NES game, Mario and Wario, Peach is actually good friends with him.
Wario and peach are friends?
9:57 Yeah... The eel scared me shitless too as a kid! Well played Johnny, and a great review!
As for Super Mario Sunshine... SPOILERS Have A Great Summer Vacation! END SPOILERS...
Oh! ...heh heh, I see what you did there!
The Eel scared everybody.
Super mario sunshine is still fun. And I beat Luigi's mantion (b rank, damn it not a rank)
bulletpanda01 Almost everyone got scared the first time they saw that thing!
phantomshadow224 do you know about the plant in luigis mansion?
Watching this since it's coming to Switch now
My favorite Mario game of all time and one of my favorite games period.
Only johnny can make the process of setting up a console and inserting a cartridge look so elegant
John you take so much pride in your work I love it
