this is a great approach to explaining rudiments. I love the way you described paradiddle diddles as just "two singles and two doubles". That changes the way I play them now somehow...
ive been playing for 20 + years .. and ive NEVER heard a convincing argument for practicing rudiments till now. "when you really practice technique, you do it for a technical purpose ...practicing technique will give you things that playing groove and fills wont" this has gotta be a universal quote from today.. always start with "why".. i wish i had you has a teacher at the beginning...
Fantastic The rudiments opening up my drumming to a new different level . My early teacher taught me basic rudiments but by doing The Lifetime Warm by Tommy Igoe daily and getting it to the advanced level helped by focus, creativity, facility, groove . It took 3 years but I’m cleaner “ and “ faster “ than I was at 21 . Maybe not as loud . Rudiments are great for all style but essential for jazz . Try triplet triple rolls & flam drags 🆒
@@insanedrummer89 How to break free from the money beat (as I heard it explained on another channel). The 8th note hi-hat, kick on 1 and 3&4, snare on 2 and 4. RL snare, snare, tom-tom, tom-tom, floor tom, floor tom crash fill. (I had to double check that...I'm a 64 year old fairly new student, struggling to play while reading charts). I've got innate rhythm, but when I'm noodling, I just do the same old tired stuff. And how to incorporate rudiments into songs (drumless track playing in the background). Appreciate the quick reply!
Could you maybe provide some lessons on how to improve the bass pedal playing? I'm kinda stuck with being abled to play standard grooves as long as the bass pedal or hi hats are not doing anything too weird at the same time.

Cool lesson!
Awesome lesson, thank you!

Love me some Flam Drags!
Awesome I just started and you are great!
Thanks Shawn!
Great tutorial. Nice conversational style. Subbed.
Thanks! What’s something you feel you’d like explained more on drums?!
I agree on the conversational style - very cool. I've just started and so don't have any requests, just probably looking to run before I can walk!

I can help you out with that!
