My parents always acted like my instruments were a nuisance. Never complemented me and usually picked at me jokingly. Today I'm almost at my goal of a home studio and I have 5 kids and a dog and Super wife. Just started playing drums at 41! I love this woman!!
I was lucky. My mum played in a metal band, so growing up, I was constantly surrounded my musicians and great music. I was only ever encouraged to play and sing - it was great fun! Glad you followed your dreams. :)
I am a 71 year old woman and I was denied playing drums in grade school and it made me pretty mad and sad! I started taking lessons years later and drums are my life! I live to play! I started playing open handed though. I figure if my left hand is closer to the closed high hat and my right had is closet to the snare.. will that's now I play.. I practice Paradiddles to this day! Have you ever tried to play "open handed"?
I picked up drums recently and learned using Gary Chester’s New Breed - so started with the open style and a pseudo ambidextrous drum/cymbal config - I do love it!
@@fonya4380 I am so glad you are doing that. I have tried to convince people to play this way. The common sense approach is this!! People will say "I'm right handed so it's my strong hand" You need two strong hands.. So get good with both of them! Is that just too much common sense? :)

I liked how she closed the hi hats carefully at 5:40 very professional. Also I like the way she explains the paradidles. She makes it fairly easy to understand for all levels.

Well, hopefully without getting too much into the "Boo-Frickity-Hoo" of my life story, I just want to say how inspired I am bu this remarkable lady! I'm 56, played drums from childhood until my early twenties, and then, due to jobs, marriage, raising kids, living in apartments, then co-raising grandchildren, drumming stayed on the back burner for 36 years, even though I often tapped along with almost every song I heard. So now, I'm shopping around for an electronic set, and can't wait to dive back in! Long life and health to you Dorothea, and keep rocking!!!!

So true and inspiring. I practised the paradiddle so much when I was a kid. Now I mainly play guitar and it inspires me a lot for unusual picking and strumming patterns.

My 6 year old daughter just started taking drum lessons, and I got to listen in on a lesson earlier this week and her teacher was just teaching her paradiddles. It seems so simple to me, but this video's really opening my eyes on how important that exercise is! How cool
Great video! Dorothea's lesson goes beyond "how to do it" and gets to "Why?" and " what?" ... articulating how this helps your playing. Going form mastering the rudiment to moving it around the kit is what most beginners seem to miss. I got there the hard way. Teaching it this way up front will help drummers get there faster with increased understanding.

Outstanding video, I've been a drummer for many years now and I've never heard any teachers explain the concept of inverted paradiddle or any inverted rudiment for that matter. Now it makes sense how they are used when dispersed around the set or used in beats. In all of his lesson videos, not even the great Dave Weckle explained it like this when he mentioned paradiddles and how to use them.
Dorothea One of the greatest experiences of my life was when I was working construction out in Florida the drummer from white snake in the bassist from iron butterfly own a bar in Dunnellon I asked them to let me come up on stage and play they made me wait all night but when I got up we played almost a whole set together it was something like six or eight songs it was one of the greatest happiest moments of my life As a drummer especially Enjoyable to play with real professionals I’ll never forget that moment it was amazing just thought I’d mention it since you mentioned iron butterfly

I've a history of buying stuff then not using it, tonnes of art canvasses for paintings never painted, fabric for designs never sewn, massage table for...massages lol. Anyway I was going to be sensible & make sure I had the habit of drumming 1st...didn't know about drum pads. Yay.
This is a fantastic demonstration. I took her advice, used as inverted paradiddle, then swung it, split between toms, changed accents, used press rolls, doubles and flams as substitutions and made a great sounding short solo.

I see that all kinds of players have been admiring this wonderful Teacher / Player. I'm 69 YO, and resurrected playing drums after over 50 Years of a Hiatus. It is in my Blood, for sure. Played in a garage band 1966-69 with HS Buddies, all of us learning our instruments as we went along. Took maybe 6-8 lessons back in 1966 at a local Music Shop in Flushing, Queens NY. Syncopation / Paradiddles were the order of the day ..... still is. I couldn't wait to get ona Drum set (that's what we called it in the day -not kit). Once I did, Playing the basic Jazz beat and basic Rock beats .... I was HOOKED. Makes me Proud to be able to "play" an Instrument. I watch many YT videos about Drumming, have to say this is one of the Best . DT breaks it down so well. Happy Drumming All !!
Dorothea is really spittin' out gold here to people like me who, despite knowing technically that a paradiddle is RLRRLRLL, was never actually shown how to apply it musically. Her 23:10 paradiddle example sounded so sweet yet normally would sound beyond my skill level. Which it was and still is because I've always been a single note player. But now that I see paradiddles with more clarity, I can start applying accents to them and stuff. I'm pretty stoked, I have had a new door to knowledge opened for me today! Dorothea Taylor rocks!
I like how she plays, and how,she swings the sticks. I see many people play like they’re slamming the sticks, but this lady does it just right with just enough force. It looks very professional.
45 years old and bought my first drum kit this past weekend. I find playing to slow gangsta rap is perfect starting point for me. If there’s a level below beginner, that’s where I reside
Pretty soon you'll be walking down the street in 4/4 and hearing drum patterns in machinery and cars trains etc. It's glorious welcome to the backbone of music.
I couldn't agree more! I wish more drummers understood this! I'm a drummer-turned-guitarist and since I have a history behind the kit, it drives me crazy to play with a drummer who just wants to roll and smash through the entire song!!! Any bass player will testify that it's sooooo much better to have a drummer who can carry a tempo, hold on to a beat, and stay in the pocket than it is to have a technical drummer who is all over the place!
You're amazing... I'm a 2nd gen drummer, inspired by my mom, who let me practice on her gorgeous 1960-something sparkle green Pearl drumset. When I was 13 got my own drumset, so we were able to jam side-by-side all through high school. Now in the process of getting my kiddo (who is already very musically inclined) into drums, for hopefully all 3 playing together.
Having drummed without private lessons (back in the day) I've learned to drum, for the most part) on my own. In any event Dorthia you just provided the missing link to my drumming (various ways to mix up the paradiddle and how to accent on various beats). My drumming has elevated because of what I just learned in your video. I just want to thank you for being thorough, clear, and to the point.
I'm 50, been playing guitar & bass for 35 years...so OBVIOUSLY...it's high time to get cracking. Seeing drummers like Ms. Taylor and my new sweethearts Nandie Bushell and Yoyoka Kaneai taught me that there is room for everyone on the throne.

Paradiddles was what I used alot of. In high school while the band was practicing we would work on paradiddles I was the fastest. But you amaze me everytime I watch you. So smooth in your drumming. I started playing in bars and clubs at 13. I played all over the us. For 39.years But the reason I stopped playing was the last band I was in made it a job. People said what are you quitting for man dont you make good money playing, this is what people say, I said it wasnt about the money for me I loved playing, the money was just a bonus but that band made it a job and I was done. Was in drum Corp also. And I cant play with the left hand like that, buddy rich did incredible. Love listening to you play INCREDIBLE'. But just bought a new 7 piece Tama star series kit all maple rim mount awesome. And the new Alesis Electronics. No not playing just the 1st set of drums that will never be in a trailer or in and out constantly. God Bless you for doing this interview on paradiddles. I was always 1st chair and I preached it all the time. They are very very useful and are used more than people really think they. Some of my most favorite Led Zeppelin songs like When the Levee Breaks contain paradiddle variations. It was nearly the first thing my drum teacher taught me 45 years ago. It is a great exercise for loosening up and sounding peppy!

I remember 30 years ago helping my son work through paradiddles - he recently steered me to Dorothea and when I found this it sure took me back ❤️

Buy a drum pad if you can in the meantime, it'll be useful forever. Doesnt have to be one with a stand, just one of the big double-sided ones.

Her 23:10 paradiddle example sounded so sweet yet normally would sound beyond my skill level. Which it was and still is because I've always been a single note player. But now that I see paradiddles with more clarity, I can start applying accents to them and stuff. I'm pretty stoked, I have had a new door to knowledge opened for me today! Dorothea Taylor rocks!
I like how she plays, and how,she swings the sticks. I see many people play like they’re slamming the sticks, but this lady does it just right with just enough force. It looks very professional.

I couldn't agree more! I wish more drummers understood this! I'm a drummer-turned-guitarist and since I have a history behind the kit, it drives me crazy to play with a drummer who just wants to roll and smash through the entire song!!! Any bass player will testify that it's sooooo much better to have a drummer who can carry a tempo, hold on to a beat, and stay in the pocket than it is to have a technical drummer who is all over the place!
I got more out of this vid-lesson than from viewing dozens of other tellings/showings/playings etc Im so glad I found this.

You're amazing... I'm a 2nd gen drummer, inspired by my mom, who let me practice on her gorgeous 1960-something sparkle green Pearl drumset. When I was 13 got my own drumset, so we were able to jam side-by-side all through high school. Now in the process of getting my kiddo (who is already very musically inclined) into drums, for hopefully all 3 playing together.

I'm 50, been playing guitar & bass for 35 years...so OBVIOUSLY...it's high time to get cracking. Seeing drummers like Ms. Taylor and my new sweethearts Nandie Bushell and Yoyoka Kaneai taught me that there is room for everyone on the throne.

Paradiddles was what I used alot of. In high school while the band was practicing we would work on paradiddles I was the fastest. But you amaze me everytime I watch you. So smooth in your drumming. I started playing in bars and clubs at 13. I played all over the us. For 39.years
But the reason I stopped playing was the last band I was in made it a job. People said what are you quitting for man dont you make good money playing, this is what people say, I said it wasnt about the money for me I loved playing, the money was just a bonus but that band made it a job and I was done. Was in drum Corp also. And I cant play with the left hand like that, buddy rich did incredible. Love listening to you play INCREDIBLE'. But just bought a new 7 piece Tama star series kit all maple rim mount awesome. And the new Alesis Electronics. No not playing just the 1st set of drums that will never be in a trailer or in and out constantly. God Bless you for doing this interview on paradiddles. I was always 1st chair and I preached it all the time. They are very very useful and are used more than people really think they. Some of my most favorite Led Zeppelin songs like When the Levee Breaks contain paradiddle variations. It was nearly the first thing my drum teacher taught me 45 years ago. It is a great exercise for loosening up and sounding peppy!
