    Marvelous video. I meet so many people who are unable to get down to the floor and get back up again, through various reasons. Often there is a fear of slipping when on ice and not being able to get up again, I think learning how to get up before you fall in an essential requisite to prepare you for the event! If only we knew about Feldenkrais techniques years ago! You are providing a life enhancing service, thank you Robert

    This may sound rather silly but I have a dog who is handicapped therefore I sleep on the floor so avoid further injury to the dog. No jumping up and down on the bed for the dog. Afterward, I suffered a back injury and now use your method to get in and out of bed. Thank you for helping me to train my body to do what it needs to do. Keep up the good work!!!

    I just tried this. Going down was good but getting up I rocked back and fell backwards hitting my head on a cabinet. Not hurt at all but I will have to be more careful. I'm 73 and a bit overweight by 20 lbs so my balance needs work. I had great success getting up from a chair after watching the video on how to get up and down from a chair. Thank you for these instructions.

    I'd like to suggest, for heavy people who have trouble finding the strength to raise themselves on their hands placed on the floor, use a step stool, not too high, under the hands and arms. This gives a "boost" and makes it easier to get your legs under you to stand. Thanks very much for these movement lessons, I have used the chair idea and it helps so much!

    • @spencer4112
      @spencer4112  5 років тому +7

      A couple of possibilities come to mind. Please remember that I don't know you or health status, so this just discusses two general possibilites. First, it's possible to simply pivot to the side just before your knees would touch down and you'll end up sitting, but facing mostly in the opposite direction you were facing when you started. To get back up reverse the movement coming onto all fours without your knees touching the floor, then just "walk" your hands back and return to the original standing position. This is a lot like the movement in my UA-cam video "Spiral to Floor," but you would be using two hands instead of one. And please, please learn to do this in gradual steps, making sure you can do each stage without holding your breath. Make sure the movement is reversible at any stage. If can't simply put it in reverse and get back onto your feet without struggle your could risk falling onto your knees or something else. Hope this helps.

    Plz address how I can get up out of that deep squat. After my open heart surgery I discovered that my back leg muscles had atrophied. If I squat down to get something from the bottom shelf, anywhere including a store, I can’t always rely on my legs being able to propel me up from the squat to a stand. I’m only 60 but have several issues, & would appreciate help. Once I tried getting up & my back leg muscles suddenly gave out leaving me laying on the floor in the middle of a store. I was ...shocked.

    Hi!
    I female and I am 70. My back is fused from T9 to S1, with scoliosis rod. I cannot touch the floor in this manner. I also have leg weakness and cannot get up from the floor. Do you have a method for people like me?

    • @spencer4112
      @spencer4112  5 років тому +3

      Darlene, this is more difficult with the spinal rods you have and it absolutely requires avoiding using your back to do the movement. The motion has to do with softening hip joints and knees, then returning to stand by bringing your hips under you. Many, many people try to use their lower back as a hinge when reaching towards the floor and it is, even in otherwise healthy people, a poor hinge. Hip joints are great hinges and allow more motion without overloading the low back. I would think leg weakness is more the limiting factor, which requires strengthening to help ourselves. Even so, the muscles that move the hip joints are a better source of power than just the thigh muscles. I developed this movement years ago while working with a 95 year-old lady with back problems and was very weak in her legs with atrophied muscles. I wish I could help more, but without seeing you in action I can't know where this breaks down for you. Best wishes . . .

      @spencer4112  4 роки тому

      So, did you do the lesson like Ellen did? Meaning, just barely start the movement towards the floor, then stop and come back up? That's the place in the lesson where we learn if there is any point in the motion when we lose reversibility. If you take the time to learn that you can stop the movement and return from any point in the motion to the floor, you should be able to get back to standing. Now, for some people who may have knee problems, for example, there might be some place in the movement when they can't reverse the movement because of the damage they've suffered. In such cases I would have to see them move to be able to help.

    I've had knee replacement and now have some restriction in the knee. I cannot kneel on it, plus cannot bend it more than about 115 degrees. How can I get to and from the floor?

    • @spencer4112
      @spencer4112  4 роки тому

      Laurie, you might try experimenting with something like this: 1)Stand with your restricted leg a half-step or so behind your stronger leg. Slowly bring your hands to the floor so you can support yourself on two hands, one knee and the toes of the leg that is more restricted. If you have trouble balancing, place the foot of the restricted leg a bit farther outside, so your stance is wider. Then walk your hands forward just like Ellen shows in the video. You'll get to where you are supported on the floor by two hands, one knee and the toes of the other foot. You can then pivot to the towards the side away from the supporting knee, avoiding putting weight on the injured knee. This will let you pivot to sitting. To get back to standing just reverse the movement. I recommend not bringing your hands to the floor the first time, but do like Ellen demonstrates in the video - bring your hands a bit closer to the floor, then return to standing. If that worked ok, go a little farther with the hands towards the floor and stand again. Doing a little bit more each time lets you practice how to do the movement without losing your balance and falling. Please let me know if this works for you.

    Is this safe for someone with osteoporosis?

    • @spencer4112
      @spencer4112  4 роки тому +1

      Sharon, osteoporosis is not the same for everyone. If you are worried about this you should check with your doctor, physical therapist or other health care practitioner who knows you. And if you continue be sure to do all the small steps leading up to being able to reach to the floor and return. Avoid any impact with the floor or sudden pushing to get back to standing. Be patient, maybe even take several days to work up to the full movement. Good luck, Robert.

    I've seen someone use this technique only to fall forward onto their face!!

      Linda as you observed the person doing this did they try to get down all in one go onto all-fours, or did they take a lot of time to build the motion safely as Ellen shows in the video, starting at about 3min, 18seconds into it? It's not so much a "technique" as it is a way to learn to make a reversible movement in the interest of safety on the way to knowing how to manage your position. Falling usually means we have made a movement too large, or too fast, too soon. Take as much time as needed and improve by small increments, especially if you're prone to falling. Trying to do the finished movement before you have mastered the reversibility can make the movement awkward, difficult or even dangerous. To fall on one's face would usually mean they went to far beyond what they could control and reverse the movement. Don't commit to going lower until you feel balanced and can reverse the movement and return to standing. If the movement goes beyond what you can reverse you will fall and you may have to catch yourself with your hands - which won't feel good and neither will landing on your knees. It's fine to take as long as you need and take it in small segments if necessary. A few short sessions will be much better if you start to get tired or unfocused.

    I am 71 and can't bend my right knee more than 90 degrees and my left one not much more.

      Bill, I have some experience with a stiff knee and also being 71. A few years ago I was skiing and my binding broke, launching me downhill and shattering my right tibial plateau, which is the bottom half of the knee. I was in a brace for many months and I had to adjust how I got up and down, not only from the floor, but from a chair. Obviously, with one leg that doesn't bend, we can't do exactly what Ellen demonstrates here. What I discovered was that I put my stiff, straight leg behind with the toes on the floor and lowered myself down balancing on my hands and the other leg. Then a pivot to the side of the stiff leg had me sitting on the floor, no problem. To get back up, just make the motion in reverse. I think this would be a little easier if one can put weight on the stiff leg, which I could not do for many weeks. Even with modifications, we can adjust if we look for the principles involved and safely experiment with what works for us.

      @@spencer4112 - I have had both of my knee joints replaced. Kneeling on any surface firmer/harder than a bed causes extreme pain due to the knee skin and tissue being squashed between the surface and the materials that comprise the prosthetic joints. Is there a technique for getting up off a floor that involves either no or just miniscule time kneeling? If there must be kneeling, using only one knee? I am a female, age 68. Thank you for any assistance you can provide.
      Additional issues:
      1. No longer have any muscle memory to assist in getting up because I have avoided putting myself in situations where I must rise from a floor since 2001 when the first of two hips to be replaced began to noticeable deteriorate. I must carefully think through each step before beginning to rise and I try to always have something to grab hold of as I proceed because I try to go as quickly as possible from kneeling (one knee) to solely on my feet.
      2. Have two prosthetic hip joints and two prosthetic knee joints
      3. Height: 5' 10"
      4. Weight: 240lbs

      Wendy, I'm sorry to hear you're having so much trouble. That's a lot of surgery to fix a lot of joint problems. As far as this way of getting to the floor and back, you might be able to adapt the process I described in response to Bill Lee's question last week. I've been pretending I have surgically repaired hips and knees this morning as I explore how you might be able to do this. The best I've found so far is to avoid coming completely onto all fours with weight on my knees. In the video Ellen comes to all-fours, waits, then pivots to one side to sit. If you made this turn earlier, before your knees are bearing much weight you might be able to pivot to the side into the sitting position without much pressure on the knees. Without knowing you I'm limited to speculating, so I hope this idea helps you.

      Cindy, I suggested earlier that you email me. I just don't have enough information from the short comments that UA-cam allows to give you individual advice in this way. Email me at feldenkraisandmore@gmail.com and we can learn more.
