    Good advice. I recently fell outside. I tried getting up but couldn’t and worried if I kept trying I’d fall again. I called a neighbor. She wasn’t able to help me up but was able to brace me while I used both hands on my porch railing to push myself to my feet. I was so embarrassed but am glad I didn’t let that stop me from calling for help.

    Thank you. I use the scoot method, my legs are weak because of inflammatory myopathy and my kneecollapses without warning. I scoot to the staircase.

    I devised something when I couldn’t get up. I was trying to retrieve something . I took a very sturdy wooden stepstool with me.
    Brace my arm, and ….nothing happened. I just couldn’t draw my legs around.
    So…..I was in the kitchen. I butt skootched to the basement door.
    Oh…well, as long as my two feet are flat on the third step, why not just use the handrail as long as it’s here (!)
    If no basement stairs, the outside porch might work….just plan and plan some more…..more planning.
    Do not get locked out. Do not have a subsequent fall. Thresholds don’t work. Survey your house, where can you do this safely.
    Now…if we’ve stopped long enough to watch this excellent vid…..why are we not surveying our home? Why and when?
    Do it with a bud, walk around with an iPad. Take pictures of serviceable furniture.
    We need friends , work together.
    No excuse on earth for not having strobe flashlight on exterior door doorknobs, hang orange safety whistle.
    Gift giving, stocking stuffer, we should all have them, give as gifts to practice with others.
    Plaudits . First time I’ve heard the admonition….do not stay on the floor.
    Untold problems…dehydration can come up much faster than one thinks. Confusion results.
    As a kid, remember adults saying…don’t let somebody go to sleep….might just keep on going.
    With a fall, have plan. Don’t stay on the floor. Don’t panic, work your plan.

    Convincing elderly people ‘they are not walking right’ is not easy. They would like to think they already know everything to be known about walking. After all, they have a lifetime of walking, jogging, running and possibly even sprinting behind them! This excellent video would be an eye-opener. Once they accept how wrong they are in their knowledge about walking, they will be more receptive to learn new way of walking. Thus motivated, once they practice exercises recommended here, they will be on their way to walking-ways again, confidently. Thanks for this Excellent video.

    Stoke victims with weak legs and arms have an entirely different challenge when recovering from a fall. We are working with one leg and one arm. I have fallen a number of times luckily all in the privacy of my home. Lifting one self on one arm and leg. Takes time and patience. Something most people don't have.

  • @Paul-lm5gv

    Like your other videos, very well done! The first method requires legs and knees that still work. The second method requires good arm strength which a lot of seniors like myself may not have. The BEST way to recover from a fall - if you cannot get up on your own - is to have your cell phone in your pocket at all times. Or a device worn around your neck with a button that links to a call center that will call 911. Peace of mind!

    Having young and perfectly healthy people demonstrate the method is not very encouraging. I (77), have fallen three times, once severe. I was not able to get up alone since it is impossible for me to kneel due to prosthesis on both knees. What other methods are there?

  • @michaeldominy2084
    @michaeldominy2084 Рік тому +6

    Hi, Thank you for your info, but some of these are ok if you have all the items around you, which many people do not have when outside. I myself have had two knee replacement’s, and it is almost impossible to get back up where there is nothing to help you, trying to put your knees on the ground is overpowering with pain. There is not very often anyone around to help if you live in certain areas.
    So maybe you could work on a solution for the thousands of people who have this problem.🤔🤔

    • @audraeden8923
      @audraeden8923 9 місяців тому

      We should have something devised….I’ve wanted an Antebellum hoop skirt frame for years and years.
      Or….what did Rosie of the Jetson's use? She had wheels?

    • @audraeden8923
      @audraeden8923 9 місяців тому

      Try devising something to pull up with. Use a surface mount D Ring on a window frame. Use a web belt, an emergency tow line, something that wouldn’t cut the hands. Need a boost to get to a sitting position and then up from there. I have a fused ankle, not enough flex to get to a couch or chair.
      Each time something has happened , it’s been different. I have super balanced little giant, steps wide enough to sit.
      Leave it up to use for books and plants. Last time, I didn’t have arm lift to get to the bottom step. I’ll devise a wedge, an inclined plane, a ramp.
      Will be able to skootch backwards to get to that bottom step. I’ll keep it near a low lying chest which is bolted to the floor.
      We have to plan. Work with others for ideas. Plan. What I’ve learned is each fall has been different. Last one, I had no arm strength whatever.
      Before that, I realized, yes, knees hurt…but a voice said…30 seconds…get up, end of problem. Oh . Yeahright. Knees hurt. But the object is…get up.
      Devise. Avoid going outside unless others are around. Handrails can be made DIY. Use inexpensive material. I used rebar.
      Instead of expensive wood railing, I cut down a dogwood sapling. Done.
      Use an aluminum walker. Some, free for the asking. I figured out easily…rollator is fine for airport, but not for uneven outdoor walking,it throws me off leaning forward.
      If you use a three wheeled electric cart just for the route you are concerned with…that might be the answer.
      It’s maddening that designers don’t help. It’s crazy that we don’t plan better. Cost warehouse has a seating system that has a pullout that would be helpful in a fall.
      Furniture could be intuitive, but noooooo.

    When I fell on the stairs and found myself on the landing with a broken foot I had to scoot down the remaining steps on my butt. When I tried to stand I couldn’t put any weight on my foot so I had to crawl to the couch and pull myself up so I could lay down and elevate my foot and call for help. It required surgery to repair.

    I can use your methods ( have used them) for falling inside. What about outside, that is where
    I panic. I fell outside on ice and couldn't get up. I was so embarrassed when my neighbor came
    over to help me up. I crawled to my car in the driveway and was able to get up. I'm so afraid
    of falling in public. I use a cane outside, not inside. I know I shuffle, I will try some of your
    other tips for that problem. Thank you so much.

    • @audraeden8923
      @audraeden8923 9 місяців тому +1

      Looking at these great vids….other things pop up. I found a double cane that I'll soon be ordering.
      It’s a cane with a rod, sort of a handrail with two rubber feet instead of just one.
      These things are deductible as medical. There needs to be more to choose from.
      We should be able to wear something to prevent a fall, a belt or something.
      But…let’s do our part….walking on ice is forbidden.
      It’s possible to not know there’s ice…black ice is the worst.
      Personal experience of walking …real slow…..uh-huh…like that matters to ice.
      Got all the way to the car, bit of a struggle with a frozen car door. Had my hand on the steering wheel, bending to sit on the seat, and I fell.
      My body went almost to the waist under the car…no control to get back up. Was so mad at myself….took a good long time getting back up,now riddled in pain, and the cane flew out of reach.
      Stupidity like that is costly, time and money over months…if still alive.
      Thing about being sensible to avoid…we teach others to do the same, avoid. The mail will still be there. The dog can walk himself.
      It’s not worth it. It’s forbidden. Bones hurt.
