I am severely afflicted with a few physical issues that makes it VERY hard for me to stand. When I first watched this I said to myself no WAY it can be that simple. Most time I DREAD getting up from a sitting position. I spend time preparing mentally for it. It is not a joke. The very first time I used this method my life got better instantly. I thank you 100000 times! I had success the very first times! I will be sharing this with others! Blessings to you kind sir!

Even though I've been retired for a few years I still keep track of responses to this video. Periodically someone responds to this being difficult if you are sitting in a deep sofa or you are in a restaurant. There are many times you won't be able to do this without some preliminary adjustments.
Imagine you are lying down and you want to get up. Before you do any of the things in this video you have to come to sitting first. Same thing if your sofa sits you so far back that you can't do this. You have to scoot forward first. (Who designs this furniture anyway?) Can't get up in a restaurant because you have a table in front of you? Well, you have to slide your chair back first so you have enough room. Or turn to the side and stand from there.
When you realize you cannot sit down or get up from a position that makes it too difficult, the first task is to solve that problem and get yourself into a place or position that makes it possible. Use your creativity. Solve that problem.

Thank you!!! I’ve had severe psoriatic arthritis since early childhood, so now at 37 I really struggle with basic functions. I still keep a walker in front of me, but this technique has helped immensely! Also, my whole family has arthritis (genetic lottery I tell ya 😋), so this will help the whole tribe. And your wife is gorgeous! Hope you have an awesome weekend 💚🙏

You're a genius! Getting "up" has been a chore for me because I'm holding off on knee replacements until I'm old (only 75 now). (:-)
So from now on, I'll think about moving Forward instead of Up. And Backward instead of Down.
Your demo, showing how some people with bad knees rise up off a chair was a perfect description of me!

This is definitely a game changer for me. I had surgery on my knees about 5 years ago and I had a flare up pain. After 4 months of no improvement I thought I would need to go back for another surgery, maybe even replacement. I remembered this video and watched it again, felt instant results and my knee is finally seeing improvement. I guess the way I was standing up was irritating my knee. Now the pain is practically gone and healing every day. Thank you so much for putting this video up!!! You have saved me from surgery.

  • @spencer4112

Thanks you all for your comments. I'm glad the process seems to help in most cases. A couple of you have brought up potential problems with this movement. One has to do with being near a table or other obstacle; the other with blood pressure fluctuation, especially in elderly people. In each of these cases we need to modify the motion to fit the person. While it looks and sounds like I'm saying this is the "correct" way to get up and down, it is not. The best way is what works most easily and safely for each individual. But this video demonstrates two things. One is the power of counter-balance to produce a movement in balance. The other is to show how the image of a movement we hold in our brains produces the action of the image. If our image of the movement is about getting "UP" we do not tend to employ the counterbalance. We get up using the power of our muscles and this works as long as you're young and strong enough to do it. But there is a price in the amount of wear and tear. Here we substitute the image of "forward" in the movement instead of "up." Standing up requires that we get our center of balance over our feet, moving a relatively long distance from balancing over our pelvis while we're sitting. The idea of counter-balance can be employed in tighter situations also. The requirement is to have equal weight forward of the feet and behind the feet. This means we can arise in a smaller "cylinder" of movement. As long as we get our weight forward enough to find the balance point over the feet. And, of course, it helps to move the chair back from the table. This might also help the problem with sudden drop in blood pressure, but the issue would be to help the person learn the forward-forward movement in the first place and the larger version Faye shows in the video is usually a good way to learn. If it simply isn't safe for someone to do this, then it might it might not be a good idea. Just make sure hey are not holding their breath when they try it. Thanks again.

I plan to try this with my 87 year old mother. I think I will let her practice with the bed slightly in front of her- if she falls, she'll have a softer landing. I need to do this, too, because I see myself having the same problems she is having. My knees snap crackle and pop when I stand up - it is so painful and I withstand pain! Thank you.

I am tall 6'3" and if I stand up too quickly, as my blood pressure lags behind, I often get dizzy and unstable. Standing up this way allows your blood pressure to go up just long enough to stop that. It works very well for me and takes away the danger of an unexpected and uncontrolled fall which I experienced a couple of weeks ago. Excellent advice Robert, thank you.

OK, a few things. I love the Spock reference. Also body mechanics does indeed very good here by putting a larger part of your weight beyond the line from your feet upwards. This works like an old style balance. What I miss is the reference to the position of the feet. You can see it when his wife is doing this exercise. She puts her feet closer to the chair and more importantly, she has her feet parallel to each other instead of pigeon toed. This last part makes a lot of difference.
If you can’t put your feet parallel when they are close together, then you need to widen your stance. This will help your body structure in your position. I learn this my students in Tai Chi class, because it helps them keeping a straight upper body., even when moving.

@@4cats2008For your home, they make higher/taller toilets. You can find them at Lowe’s or Home depot. I think they are labeled “ADA compliant”. I bought this kind when I bought a home and remodeled it. The slightly taller toilet seat makes a world of difference when getting up!
And when you’re using a public restroom, opt for the larger handicapped/wheelchair stall. Those toilets are taller and therefore easier to get up off of.

My father was falling down consistently because of having weak legs. He was 86 years old at the time. As a trainer I started having him do Knee bender’s to a couch twice a week. At first I put pillows underneath so he wouldn’t have to go as low. Each week I subtracted a pillow, eventually he could easily to10 repetitions to the couch. I even had him hold a 10 pound weight While doing the knee benders. The result he was able to walk again confidently without falling down. It only takes a few minutes a week to regain your mobility. Do the squats rest two or three days and repeat. He then started being more active even playing ping pong without becoming tired.

I worked with hospice patients almost for three decades. The simplest way to get up is to ask patient to scoot his bottom to the edge of a sitting surface. After that ask him to shift his weigh forward, above his knees. In this position it’s easy to use momentum and strength of his leg muscles to get up right. Scoot to the edge is the key to this movement!

THANK YOU!!!! I have several older friends for whom this will be life changing. i wish I'd known it when my mother was alive. she was 96 when she died. And, we'll all be old someday unless we die first, so this is valuable for everyone.

This is a great lesson for anyone who has a problem standing up or sitting down, especially when the chair is lower than we are comfortable with. After my knee replacement the therapist asked me to stand without using the arms of the chair, etc to support the movement. I couldn't do it. If the therapist had shown me these methods, not only would I know how to stand unassisted, I believe it would have lessened the stress of finding myself in a situation where it was more difficult to get up and not knowing how to accomplish that.

A revelation that is so liberating! Thank you for taking the time to do this presentation. I'm 75 and had a CVA/Stroke, so I had trouble standing up from a seated position until shown the best way to do it, it's great. :)

Oh my! I've had trouble getting up from a chair or the sofa since my knee replacement, and after doing this movement I'm up & down like a forty year old! It only took about 5 minutes to relearn this movement. Thank you so much!!!

Jeanne Johnson Even if you have a knee replacement, you still have a regular other leg, plus you can still put pressure on that leg. I got up from the floor with no problem, help, or objects a week after breaking my leg.

Tried this method, the thought of falling forward was very scary.
I placed a chair in front of me.
This gave me confidence to stand up, and if I stumbled the chair was there for support.
Thank for getting me standing easier.

I recently retired and developed low back pain during a cross-country move. I had also been sedentary far too long and it caught up with me. The first thing my new physical therapist taught me was standing using hip-hinge. Your method actually starts where I was- not too advanced. I like the idea of the garden pads while learning and getting stronger. A few pillows would work too.

I am 72-year-old This morning i stood up 100 times. Then i did 25 deep squats none stop. I was not breathing heavy at the end of it. If you excercise you don't get in that weakened condition.

I live in a seniors apartment house. I observe others who are having difficulty. This method of standing is excellent, I use it all the time. There is however a point of difficulty, not in the method but in the fear. Rotating the body at the knees, after the bottom has moved off the seat, is a fearful point. If the patient can get by this they will often succeed well. If fear is too great at that point of rotation of the knees, with the heat forward and the bottom back, professional help might be needed.
