    I've been practising your method of standing up for an ALREADY I find it amazing. I was beginning to think I was getting MS, I was so incapacitated when trying to stand. Sitting was no problem as I just threw myself down on the chair. Thank you so much.

    This is great and seems so obvious after you explain it. I’d have never put it together on my own. Great news: I can now STAND up from sitting and all b/c of your other video. Thanks so very much. You’ve improved my life for the better. I shared this with friends this morning and they were stunned to see me effortlessly sit and stand - un aided!! I’m so grateful I don’t have words to express it. Bless you. ❤️

    Surprising! I could not do that at first either. Then I ended up doing exactly what you told her to do.

    I wasn't aware of this form of organized exercises. I will review and certainly incorporate this in my daily routine. Dr. Mitchell, Foot Specialist, NYC Oct.13, 2016

    This was truly fascinating! But what was the purpose? To enhance her mobility? Body awareness? And if so, because of pain? Reduced balance? Relieve muscle tension?

      This video is designed to give a quick demonstration and explanation of how doing Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement lessons works. Many of our problems can be a result of years of using ourselves inefficiently. In this example Persis shows her habit (resulting from her image of herself and of this action of tilting the head) produces, not only limits in mobility, but extra strain on her neck. If the work of tilting the head is distributed throughout more of herself, no one area is overtaxed. This has application to aches and pains, injuries, healing and prevention. It is unlikely that we will expand this self-image without some process for doing so. More likely we will just feel like we are stiff and can't do particular actions. If we have pain, standard treatments often try to "fix" the pain problem by treating the painful area directly. But a problem like this can be a result of the overall pattern of self-use and the painful area hurts because of that. We can go beyond the symptoms and find a way to decrease pain, but more . . . we can find more joy in motion.
      Thanks for asking, Robert

    I really love Feld and my current teacher, but from what I have learned it seems that this is rehearsed - it becomes apparent as the student begins to move slightly before the instruction ... from what I am learning, a new movement should occur as the instructor talks and the student follows - this way the student is not in his or her head, as occurs here, but is learning to retrain and change through the new voice in sync with the new body movement and understanding.

    what will it take to be always aware of using more(all) of ourselves in every action?

    • @spencer4112
      @spencer4112  5 років тому +4

      I'd have to say that being aware of ourselves all the time is a really ambitious goal. It requires total mindfulness, which most of us will never accomplish. But, we can make great improvements by being more aware more often than we are now. By noticing how we are not only moving, but thinking, feeling and sensing also. Improve it by prompting yourself to "check-in" from time to time. You'll eventually find you can be aware and accomplish tasks at the same time. Gradually build up the ability to be present without the impossible demand to be totally aware all the time and find out how far you can go. A mindfulness practice, whether Feldenkrais work, yoga, meditation or other method is a good basis, but a huge extension of those special sessions is to bring awareness into real life as often as you can.
      Good question. Thanks, Robert

    This is so interesting, but does it matter that the opposite shoulder is much higher in the second picture, or is the point more to get the neck to move over further?

      With another minute or so she could do the exploration on the other side. The goal is not so much to make her symmetrical, but to open her access to her whole self in motion. Robert

    Is her arm touching the wall? Is it moving down touching the wall ? I have Pd and it did not work as good as on your video

    • @spencer4112
      @spencer4112  5 років тому +4

      No, her arm is not touching the wall. You don't have to do this to the extent that Persis does. We all start from where we are and progress at our own pace and amount. One thing, I would check on, though, is which foot you are placing more of your weight on. Experiment with more weight on your left foot, then more on your right foot, then maybe more of less equally on each foot. Take your time; it can be harder at first with PD. Enjoy . . .

    Well. Of course. She'd bending at the waist. You told her to bring her ear to her arm. It's deceptive.

    • @spencer4112
      @spencer4112  3 роки тому +7

      I think you've missed the point. If you listen to the commentary after she had done the movement you will hear that the idea is not to stretch. It's to employ more of herself. And she's not exactly "bending at the waist" to do this. She's learned to use all of her spine and ribs to bring her head down. That's how you avoid straining individual parts and make movement safer. At the end she brings her ear to her arm, using what she has just sensed in the lesson - movements done with your whole self, even if some parts are only moving a tiny bit, is generally a healthier and more effective way of moving. I don't hear any deception in this.
