Such an awesome movie. Taika Waititi playing Hitler was really controversial when this came out but people missed the point behind that decision entirely. He's a Polynesian Jew filling a role about a man that hated Jews with his entirety. I'm glad you reacted to this and enjoyed it, I was tearing up when you saw the foreshadowing of his mother dying...such a powerful character moment that far too often goes overlooked.
She was doing what she could. Nearly gets me going again, 😢 lol. I didn't know he was Jewish, I thought he was Maori. Still think his priest in the Wilderpeople was the funniest! Cheers for watching.
@@dunkyvslife7447 His Dad is a Maori and his mother is a Russian Jew. Nazis hated the Russians and the Jews...and they feared the Maoris. He was perfect for this role. :) Great reaction btw!
This movie instantly entered my personal top 5 favorite movies of all time after I saw it. It is the perfect satirical example when exploring that particular genre. I wept at the gut punch scene of his mom's demise and how he still tried to tie her shoes. I must've laughed as much as I cried watching this. Brilliant casting, especially the kid who played Jo Jo. Can't believe this was his first time acting in anything.
Great reaction Dunky. The shoe scene had me crying too and left an emotional impact. It was brilliantly setup and executed. Scarlett Johansson did such a great job as Rosie. She was only in the film for 15 minutes, but her performance is something you can never forget. The movie implies that Captain K (Sam Rockwell) is gay and knew about Rosie hiding Elsa ahead of time. He and his boyfriend stopped by the house to bail Jojo out. The pink outfits were designed for him to go out "loud and proud". Keep up the great work Dunky!
Thanks man. I'm not the biggest Scar Jo fan but the scene where she says she'll just 'eat some grapes', and then chews and smiles is the best scene I've ever seen her in. Great smile! I also heard Captain K has a pink triangle on him like the nazis would put on gay people. Damn I love Sam Rockwell!
This is one of those movies that I wasn't too sure about when I first saw previews for it. Anything with a sensitive and painful subject like this turned comedic can so easily go wrong. But TW did such a lovely job giving us hilarious satire, a perspective of the war from the viewpoint of a kid, and a beautiful show of humanity that leaves you breathless from crying. The emotional scenes were done so honestly and without overdressing. It was raw and real, and even more devastating for it. Such a deft hand at directing, I'm in awe. 💔 If you feel like watching a reaction to this movie from a German, try Cultured Bubble's channel. She has a lot of insights that added even more to an already amazing film. Thank you for your reaction. 💖 ~Caroline

I didn't expect myself crying that much watching a (what i thought it was going to be) "comedy" movie as well. Love your sensitive reaction and this movie too of course. A great emotional rollercoaster. Greetings from Germany mate 🇩🇪 🇦🇺
I remember seeing this in the movies with my girlfriend at the time, im so glad I bought a beanie I wasn't expecting to cry so hard at the mum scene and captain Ks sacrifice.
Such an amazing film. The entire cast is fantastic, excellent cinematography, and it really works so much better than it has any right to. Feel like a lot of people swore it off before giving it a chance based on the premise, so glad you liked it. It's hilarious but also not afraid to delve into some serious concepts and heartfelt moments. To wrap a coming of age story around a young idealistic kid who is fed propaganda and doesn't know any better, and begins to question whether what he's being taught is right or wrong is surprisingly profound for a satire with an imaginary Hitler. At least you saw Scar Jo's end coming. I know I didn't put it together, the shots of the shoes were bugging me the whole time asking myself why they were doing that, and then it hits and you realize why they did it that way. Easily one of my favorite films from 2019. Cheers!
Got really strong 'Life is beautiful' vibes but I'm not complaining. Loved how pumped up the kid is at the start! Going to get the fam to watch it this weekend. Thanks for watching 👍
What a beautiful reaction. I reacted the same way right till the very end - smiling and tears rolling down my face as Heroes plays and they both dance... finally free.
This film is so good. There are scenes in this (as in many other films) that I only have to see clips of, to get teary-eyed. Have you seen Dead Poets Society, White Squall, Master and Commander, Boychoir, Stand By Me, or Good Will Hunting? All of those have good stories and heartfelt moments. They all have teary-eye moments for me, too... Jonathan Brandis (NES2) was an amazing actor, especially as he got older, and "found his chops." Sad that we lost him. The Captain and Freddy were lovers, who came-out together in flamboyant costumes, and I'm sure they were friends with Jojo's mother, as she was part of the Resistance, and probably a friend to all manner of "undesirables."
Just finished watching a 'Shawshank' reaction so got some cry therapy in, I know exactly what you mean. Haven't seen White Squall or Boychoir, haven't done any movies in ages so will have to get on that. The Cap was def friends with Jojo's mum, not sure about Freddy, he still seemed kind of serious. They did look cool though!
Excellent reaction video buddy!! Very good observation. I like how you started already getting depressed about Rosie way before it happened. Were she was being “the father” and tells JoJo “She’s doing what she can”
Always great to watch reactions to this film. I avoided it to avoid the depressing reality and finally watched it and Taika is a genius. In my top 5 all time. Thanks for this upload.
A hilarious movie to be sure but one that makes me cry every time I see it. Great reaction Taken from another reaction channel comment: On captain K’s final uniform he added a lot of decorations, one of them being a pink triangle which the nazis used to identity homosexuals.
After I saw this I watched a whole bunch of reactions and I missed quite a few things. Hadn't heard about the triangle but that is soooo cool, go Cpt.K!
That bully who put his boot on Jojo's face in the rabbit scene was the one begging the Russian soilders for his own life, before they dragged away Capt K.
The way you muted all of the color does a disservice to the movie. It is intentionally brightly colored in the beginning, because this is seen through JoJo’s point of view, which is someone who is innocently unaware of his indoctrination and the real war. After he finds his mother’s body, the color grading definitely gets muted, to show his realization of the truth and horrors of war.
as a german, at first it was really hard for me to get into this movie, what with "hitler" being funny and stuff. because obviously, while im not jewish, all the children here learn a LOT in school about national socialism and the horrors of fascism of course. but getting more into the movie, of course i realized how much we needed something like this. movies like schindlers list are a bit iffy anyway on account of them falling into the "heroic non-jewish saviour of jews" you know? and i think theres only so many grey scale, washed out versions of that we can take. but this? beautiful color palette, seen through a little kids eyes, with a jewish character that has actual character and is not a meek victim? (even though she still is one, its just that you can tell that she had a life outside this horrible situation) ... all those things make this movie so memorable in a very good way. i love it.
