This in an incredibly important movie to come out. My grandfather was just a bit older than JoJo was in this movie growing up in Nazi Germany. He was in the Hitler youth and was indoctrinated with the same properganda JoJo was...
But that wasn't the man he became. 2 years after the war he came to England and served in the British army for 30 years. He started charities, traveled the world and always left a door open for anyone to have dinner with him. He was supportive of gay rights and was one of the most open minded and generous people I have ever known. People are not defined by those who taught them. People can be saved and can change in meaningful ways. There are so many people today who's parents or governments bring them up to hate... This movie shows us that there is hope and people can change.

Captain K is such an interesting character, because the confirmation in that final battle that he's gay (pink triangles were the symbol the Nazis used for gay men in the concentration camps) puts a lot of his attitude and actions into perspective. When he protects Elsa, it's an act of solidarity from one person hiding in plain sight to another.

So, I learned something unexpected recently, and that is that Scarlett Johansson is part Jewish.
Also, your intuition was correct, Sam Rockwell's character is gay and his coworker was his lover. He really wasn't down with the whole Nazi thing, but was "going through the motions" to keep his head above water, which might give further insight as to why Sam Rockwell played the character the way he did. Also, his costume at the end featured a certain color that, at the time, represented the homosexual lifestyle. He basically knew the war was over and his time was near, so I think he figured he'd go out with a bang, on his own terms and being his true self.

@@gracebrown3074 When the Nazi party first got into power in 1933 one of its first acts was to strictly enforce anti-homosexuality laws, including shutting down many of the gay clubs around Germany/ At the time they cemented as eradicating homosexuality within Germany it's number 1 priority.
Being gay was not expected and was akin to being a traitor, as you were not creating more children for Germany. They slowed down on enforcing this in the army once their numbers started dropping because they needed the troops, but don't mistake that for Hitler being tolerant of gays.. He literally ordered the deaths of thousands of them.

Whats even crazier for me that Taika is also Jewish... And he took the hardest part there is to play. No man should accept to play such role but he did it in order to show how crazy the Nazies were in their thinking. How they literally labeled everyone by their looks, not by their behaviors.

According to IMDB, when Taika was researching WWII he found that Germany was very vibrant and fashionable. He liked the idea of under the surface “the third Reich is crumbling and the dream is over.” Which is why the film was so full of color. It was reflecting what JoJo saw

It’s also considered as a jump scare! Something scary coming into frame and shocking the character and watcher. I think this is great we don’t need loud noises or anything like that to envoke an emotion out of us. Jump scares in horror movies are the back bone and after you watch it a while you’ll become numb to it, but since this is a new approach I will never see that seen and have an emotional response to it. To sum it up it’s great and I love this movie.

There are so many little hidden things in this taika movie.
For example, if you look carefully at the scene where Jojo confronts with Hitler for the last time, you'll notice the drawings of Hitler have butterflies glued on them, as opposed to the beginning.
When captain K arrives just after the gestapo, he's riding the mom's bike. He knew what just happened before, and he came to help jojo.
Just after the dancing scene with the mom, we see Elsa holding the knife, while fun music is playing in the living room. That makes me think she considered suicide...
Also, the part where the mom talks about "driving a car, learning to fire a gun, go to Morocco, trust without fear", makes me think of her life in a resistance movement.

    • @arparso
      @arparso 2 роки тому +1

Good points, though the bike is actually not his mom's. At least not the bike she was riding a few scenes before. Captain K may still have known about the mom's fate, of course... he's clearly there to check up on Jojo and covers for him and Elsa.

That happened a lot. If you ever look into the habits of Nazi guards and officers, you'll find that they were often hard-drinking degenerates with serious issues. The reason is why this film is so refreshing is because it finally gives us a portrayal of Nazis that's closer to that instead of mythologizing them as these cold calculating badasses.

This movie was pretty well received. The scores on rotten tomatoes and metacritic are a bit skewed down due to a handful reviews that were like. Nope. Nazi. Zero stars. Bai. But the rest of the audience and critics loved it. It got nominated for 6 oscars and won 1. And that was in 2019: one of the best years for movies probably this century. Any other year it might have had even better result with the academy.
Taika is just such a master at taking your heart, crushing it into million pieces, but then carefully assembling it before giving it back.

Interesting watching Americans react to the book burning scene. This is minutes after the scenes of teenage Hitler adulation set to Beatles music. Like the German youth 20 years after these events American teens were burning their Beatles records at organised events. Very few make the connection or comment on it.
And the captain is not a Nazi. He is a regular soldier fighting for his country. All his medals and ribbons are the highest battle honours available for bravery in the field. He is a hero who has too many injuries to fight at the front.

this film is a brilliant depiction of the nature of humanity. we are not just one emotion, one experience. we are a multitude of conflicting values needs and aspirations. innocence can be indoctrinated around the world and that does not make the indoctrinated BAD as a whole just Flawed and abused in a different way to the abuse they inflicted on others. our perception of the world is very often formed based on the input of both your caregivers and the world. its however never too late to change your stance and be better. never too late to seek joy comfort and hope. this movie will stay with me and curb my I Stanton judgement of others whose stance I dont agree with. it is so HUMAN.

He's also hiding in plain sight and risking his life doing it. It's played in a lighthearted and funny way and it's easy to miss it as ha ha, gay nazis (like the mockery of a jew playing Hitler) but it's pretty serious stuff for the characters. Klenzendorf was hiding his homosexuality and Jojo's parents were in the resistance and harboring a Jewish girl. He turned out to be an unlikely hero. While it's clear at the end that he's dead and she's upset about it, you also have to think about the fact that she's been locked up in a wall for a long time and would probably miss someone she loves. I do think it’s important to note that Nazis were very ableist. And the way you looked was a representation of Nazis in general. So Jojo, having been brainwashed and indoctrinated from a VERY young age, and internalized all that propaganda. The scars on his face was a constant reminder that he was lesser than all his peers, that he’d never get a good job, never have a good life, nobody would love him, etc. So I think the statement you made is a little unfair, but I also understand that you might not have known this info 😊

I know this movie rubs some people the wrong way, because Nazis are not absolute evil. But the worst take away we have of evil is that it is or ever was absolute.
There was a great display of pictures from a guard of Auschwitz. Just a family album of them going out with friends, kids, picknicks. Yet this man was literally taking place in mass murder.
I think this movie should teach people to realize, evil is very rarely absolute. Which is why every single person is prone to fall for it. If you think evil is only evil if it is absolute you will never relize if you become so.

The internet or outside sources didn't exist.. When America bombed/went to war in the middle east after 9/11 people cheered and came together, and that was only in recent history. While the war was clearly wrong.. the citizens weren't these super sour violent angry people, they were just happy to wealth, a roof over their head and a belly full of food.. hence praising the man who gave it to them.

My Grandad fought in the war and although he never spoke about the fighting and death, he was very keen that I understood that the German people were not evil. The evil they allowed to happen was indoctrinated into them by evil people.

As an adult in this day and age, it's easy to say that it's not so bad, it's just a little scar, don't make such a fuss. But he is only a 10 year old child in a country that had exact ideas of what a man and a woman should look like. And he doesn't fit in there anymore.
And I have a question: what exactly do you learn about WW2 in the US? I can't shake the feeling that they don't go into how it all started in Germany and how it could be that people followed a madman. Many seem extremely convinced that such a thing would never happen to them.

Nooo, we learn exactly that about WW2 in the United States: started in Germany because of a charismatic madman who espoused a supremacist ideology. We just don’t appreciate the irony and refuse to believe it could happen here. See also: pots of boiling water and frogs.

"Jews love ugliness" is the part everyone catches. But the part that gets me (and Elsa) is the followup: "That’s another thing we learned IN SCHOOL."

Maybe you should have watched the movie before, you would have known for the shoes. Elsa is 16. And you would have known the captain. And Elsa drew the pics in the book. Maybe you can watch it now you've posted your video.
