I watch every Jojo reaction video that comes on because I love seeing people fall in love with this film the way I did. You guys got it from the start. I took my kids to the cinema to see this they were 11 and 13 at the time and they both totally understood the message this film was conveying.

Same ! :) Reaction videos for this movie are something special. The emotional journey you take during all the events happening is incredible, and with everyone that takes this journey in this reaction videos, I live it again with them. What a fantastic impact of this masterpiece. For me it especially clicked after I got it, that everythin you see in the movie is seen through the eyes of a child in these times. The way he sees Hitler, the way all the madness starts as a big adventure with bright colors, only to mute down to the lowpoint. But children are incredible at adapting, he lives on, and step by step the colors return to his live. So great...

I hunt UA-cam for reactions to this film - it never disappoints. The laugh out loud bits then the utter shock at THAT scene. This film is a masterpiece and Taiki is a genius.
It was also very touching, that as Rockwell’s character was gay, which also at the time, was also punishable by death, it show’s you why he helped the Jewish girl. The mother’s death always ruins me, Johansson was amazing.
It's not that it wasn't a death sentence, just that they would send you to one of the labor camps and you'd be worked to death, but most were sent to Dachau. The sick thing about it that even in the 70s and 80s, when being gay was still a crime, they tried to send people back to prison to finish their sentences to people who were liberated from the camps, since being a homosexual was outlawed in the Weimar Republic before the Nazis came to power. Its also why Sam and Alfie's uniform at the end had a pink triangle, which was the symbol they were forced to wear.
Exactly, Captain K (Rockwell) understood the risks in his own way and was also doing what he needed to, to survive.
That's the reason the pink triangle is on-par with the rainbow flag as an identifier for the LGBTQ+ community. It was used in the same way the yellow Star of David was used...
A small detail that no one's mentioned here:
Jojo often imagines Hitler eating lots of meat and smoking cigarettes. This is because he is so out of touch of who Hitler actually is due to fanaticism. In real life, Hitler was a vegetarian and very anti smoking.
It's true. Most reactors don't mention this detail, but I suspect that's partly because a lot of people don't learn what the man behind the movement was like in his personal life.
Also I love the little detail of him eating a unicorn. Like evil devouring innocence.

Absolutely loved this movie. Great representation of what a movie should be. I love how Taika makes the movie less "childlike" the more JoJo is growing and learning what truly is going around him. This movie quickly made it into my top 5. Awesome review.
This movie does a really great job showing exactly how people can fall under the sway of a charismatic leader. Most movies struggle with it because they always want to go out of their way to make you see how bad the person really is. There's always a moment where the main character suddenly has the truth revealed to them... and in this movie, we are just shown 1) "Hitlermania" sweeping the nation, 2) the charismatic leader is Hitler, and the movie trusts that you already know he's bad, and 3) Jojo's fanaticism breaks down by degrees. So often, you see people in movies having single moments of realization, but in reality, there are degrees of change before anything major happens. Jojo starts out breaking rules to protect his mother (and himself) and in the process of trying to reaffirm his faith in Naziism, the foundations of that belief crumble until he decides to actively work against the fascists.

31:45 Mark! He sat on the ground for so long because he knew that there wouldn't be a proper funeral or even a memorial for her. He needed to say goodbye to her somehow for that emotional closure. 😢 He tied her shoe and thus demonstrated to her that he did learn, that he was paying attention to her. He prolonged learning because he loved the interaction. I was the same way.
In my case though, and my brother's, there was a big delay with shoe tying experience, because once Dad began buying our footwear, he preferred cowboy boots. 🤠
On a personal note, I also thought it was a straight comedy & I watched it on a plane & my niece kept laughing at me because I would laugh, cry, laugh, cry.
This movie sticks with me & I recommend it to everyone.
Also another factoid, Captain K came to the house because he knew the mother was dead - he carries in her bike)
Great reaction. Here's an easter egg for ya. 'Never look a tiger in the eye'. The painting of the tiger on the wall. Taika Waititi is of Māori descent. In the Māori language Taika means 'Tiger'. Woop thar it is!
THAT WAS THE SYMBOLISM!! I thought it was a reference back to Scarlett' s character to Eliza conversation about a woman looking the tiger in the eyes as I lightly touched on in the video.
@@julienn8844 It is. Rosie was telling Elsa what it means to be a woman, and one of the things is looking a tiger in the eye. This scene of Elsa looking the tiger in the eye is to say that she's becoming a woman.
If you want more fantastic Taika Waitit content I'd definitely recommend Hunt for the Wilderpeople! His new series Our Flag Means Death is also great

It is based on a book Taika's mother recommended "Caging Skies" with a lot of liberties (no imaginary Hitler).
Also, as the movie progresses, Hitler's uniform changes and each interaction becomes more aggressive.
Taika did an incredible job (he is also Jewish & wanted to make Hitler look as ridiculous as possible)
Hitler’s rants also become more aggressive and “real” as JoJo begins to question his beliefs.

Roman Griffin Davis (Jojo) really did a great job holding his own against so many veteran actors like Scarlett and Sam. Scarlett's best role I have seen he in. Sam Rockwell is always a win. Archie Yates (Yorkie) stole every scene he was in.
The scene with Stephen Merchant is thought to have the most heil Hitler's in one scene or sequence.
Seeing Rosie's Shoes was a gut punch.
I am compelled to get this book and yes Yorkie was a favorite to say the least.

'great writing'- yes, it won the Oscar for screenplay- it's only win.
The director intentionally made it to be PG13, so younger people could watch it. A good example of how you can make an impactful war movie, without the gore and violence. It shows kids how to think for themselves, and to not just assume that what is going on around you is true or right.

The film is indeed based on a book, it's called Caging Skies, written by Christine Leunens. Taika Waititi adapted it and one change he made was adding imaginary Hitler. I think it works really well as a representation of Jojos indoctrination. At the beginning he is his best friend, but when Jojo starts to think for himself, the distance between them grows, until he sees Hitler for what he really is (and tells him to f- off 🥳).
Taika said in interviews that he had no intention of playing that character himself, but it was the production company who asked him to. It's one of the best films I have seen in years, I could talk about it for hours 😄
This was such an amazing movie. The acting was incredible. I might have to go and buy the book.
I'm about 3/4 of the way through the book and it could not be more different. Much, MUCH darker. I highly recommend it but don't expect it to be like the movie at all.
This is one of those movies that get better the more you know about actual ww2 and life in Germany pre- and during war, because there are many easter eggs (not sure if it's fitting in this setting) everywhere - posters, items, remarks etc.
This movie is based on the book Caging Skies. I got it after I heard of this movie. Taika said that he based it on the first half of the book but Imaginary Hitler was his own original idea.
I love how Taika takes on kids with no acting experience and gets the best out of them that makes you think they have been acting before, they transform themselves and become the characters.
Just imagine tiaka trying to do a sales pitch for this movie.

Loved the reaction! I know I'm a little late to the party, but if you guys ever think about reacting to more of Taika's work, I definitely recommend Boy. It's about a little maori boy who idolizes his absent father; and even though it's a very different story, you can really see so much of what made Jojo Rabbit great in it. It's another coming of age that deals with very heavy themes, but does so through the eyes of a child who slowly starts understanding what's really happening to him. Not as funny, but just as good as Jojo Rabbit- if not better

@@RKnights It isn't as well known, I think because it's one of his first movies. It's from 2010- so way before he got Marvel fame and people worldwide started paying attention to his stuff
It was adapted from a book, but I heard the ending was changed dramatically. The book’s ending is much darker.
My friend read the book. There is no imaginary Hitler. My understanding is that there is quite a bit of time spent after the allies take the city and the boy lies, and keeps the girl hiding in the wall because he doesn't want to be alone.

It is hinted in a couple of scenes that Captain K. and Finkle are gay and have a secret relationship. When the Gestapo shows up at the Betzlers', K brings back the mother's bike, because he knows she has already been executed, and he worries about Johannes. K was a patriot, but he wasn't a Nazi... and gay, in a darker age. The elegance of how they discreetly put on your mother's shoes, until you see "the scene" in which you recognize her without seeing her, is absolutely elegant and wonderful... and the houses with windows like eyes looking at their desolation, a bloody genius.

Captain k's battle uniform has a pink triangle on the breast pocket, which was the symbol for gays and lesbians in concentration camps.

At the Auschwitz museum (that used to be a concentration camp) they have a whole room filled with shoes of people victim of the holocaust, is very significant that they show the shoes if the german “traitors”, included the mom, signifying that there where also german victims if the Nazis

Notes: I saw the awards shows before I saw the movie. Thanks to "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?" I was expecting it to be a surname not an insult! I also expected "JoJo" to be the name of Scarlett's character or at least a girl, not a boy! But thanks to the award shows, I was prepared for what we got!
This movie is another example of how many movies there are nowadays that have "MCU" alumni in them!
Did the mother's death make you sadder than the death of Black Widow?
There's an old WW2 movie in which a father comforts his son as they struggle with adding the freshly killed body of the wife/mother to an improvised barricade in an alley thst has other bodies in it too. It is hoped that it will slow down a tank just enough to give others more escape time. Viewers would know it wasted effort and time, but the characters wouldn't know due to lack of experience if they were being affective or not. They weren't!
Seeing Rebel Wilson's character's blonde head in a pile of rubble reminds me of that older movie. Especially because the tanks weren't stopped by her either.
This movie is the only movie with her in it that I've seen in which her character died! It is also the last movie that I've seen her in with that body, because she looses a lot of weight for "Senior Year"! But ironically that movie is about a high school cheerleader that is injured in a stunt gone wrong! She's in a 30 year coma and eventually wakes up overweight in Rebel's less overweight body! Irony! But I suppose it is a transitional phase. 🤔
That shot of Jojo kicking Hitler out the window should, by all rights, have felt cheesy as hell. Instead, virtually everyone found it extremely satisfying and cathartic.

When i first saw this movie i was kinda bothered that they made hitler likeable but when i found out that taika and scarlett were jewish it was easier to stomach . Having jewish actors and actresses form so much of the movie’s core made it much more comfortable for me

It’s funny to me when films take place in non-English speaking countries and for some reason everyone speaks English with very heavy accents when in reality they’d all just be speaking German. It messes up my brain lol.

Having watched several reaction channels reacting to this movie. I have to say that you guys have butchered the holy hell out of this movie making it completely unentertaining to watch. You're just cutting out too much too often. I don't expect to get to see the whole movie. But I've seen it done so much better by so many other channels that didn't destroy the entire integrity of the movie just to avoid copyright infringement or a violation of UA-cam guidelines. Do better.
