Also, the tone changed for the movie because the tone changed for JoJo.
At the beginning, he was carefree. He believed the propaganda. Nothing was against him. Then he started to wake up. Things became real. And everything took on a different outlook.

My uncles were born and raised in Germany in the 30s. The propaganda was burnt deeply into them, while they were kids and - even though they were educated men and KNEW, that most of what they had believed in as children was utter nonsense - they never got over a certain degree of racism 😔
My father was ten years younger and grew up at the / after the end of the war and although it was tough times... my grandparents were free to speak their minds, so he ended up with a far less radical worldview.
Indoctrination is a powerful tool. Quite scary really

I remember watching this for the first time with no prior knowledge thinking it was just going to be a silly fun time, and when those inspectors show up at the front door looking for JoJo's mom the suspense was terrifying, then those dangling pretty shoes, absolutely heartbreaking. Such a fresh and brilliant WWII story. Cheers gents. 🍻

I'm so glad I got to see this with you. Taika Whaititi directed this movie, and starred as Hitler. When my mother was a kid, her family took in a young Polish girl for a short time who saw her parents murdered by the Nazis. She tried to electrocute herself on the electric fence that surrounded the concentration camp, but the Nazis turned off the power so she couldn't. My mother is 93 years old now, and people with only peripheral memories about the war, like my mother, will soon be gone.

  • @blytheguy7510

It's kind of funny in a way that the tone shifted when the gestapo arrived led by Stephen Merchant, who is the main comedic actor hired for the film. Or at least he's the most well known of everyone to do mostly comedic roles but his appearance in this almost left you stricken. The fact that he towers over everyone else makes him an ominous being. It's actually really clever to do that, hire a comedic actor in a villainous role. We as an audience are immediately put off by it. We don't know what he's going to do. I saw an interview with him and Sam Rockwell where Sam told him how Stephen comes across as an intelligent person and that intelligence in this role made him intimidating to him. Like his character knew he couldn't mess around with this guy, he's bad news. Which is why his character ran interference when they were at JoJo's. He sympathized with the mother and the cause as well because him and the other guy (Theone) were in a relationship, which if it was made public, they'd be hung up with the others. They were having to hide in plain sight. You'll notice when he showed up all decked out he was sporting a pink triangle that Nazis used to identify homosexuals like the yellow star was used to identify Jews. Sam's character actually was a decent person in a bad situation. He did what was right in the end.

    • @stevenandcarminabeedle9089
      @stevenandcarminabeedle9089 2 місяці тому

Yeah the tone changed the second the stupidity and foolishness of all the repeated “heil shitlers” in his house shifted to the little girl saying it because that was no longer silly or foolish, but heart-wrenching and terrifying.

A rollercoaster of feels and then WHAM right at the end. Excellent reaction! I loved that Captain K and Finkle's uniforms were adorned with pink triangles, the badges that designated the homosexual men in the concentration camps. He was definitely helping Jojo the whole time, and was proud to be a soldier for his homeland, but obviously resented what the Nazi party had done to it. And Yorki, "Our only friends are the Japanese. And just between you and me, they don't look very Aryan."

    "Nothing makes sense anymore."
"Yeah, I know, definitely not a good time to be a Nazi."
Fun Fact: Mel Brooks praised the film in his speech at the AFI awards in January 2020: "I just saw Jojo Rabbit (2019), and it's really a terrific and eloquent and beautiful picture."
Lost In Adaptation Fact: The film is based on Christine Leunens's novel Caging Skies (2008), a book that Waititi's mom loved before turning him onto it as well. "Imaginary Hitler" is an added element, although the rest of the story's main characters are adaptations of the book.
Historical Fact: Despite not being a full-on war movie, all of the German equipment seen, both carried and vehicles, are genuine German gear. No mocked-up non-German vehicles are used ever during the film. Taika Waititi discovered in his research that WWII Germany was very vibrant and fashionable and was interested in shying away from traditional war films showing it as dreary and dark, instead presenting the town as a seemingly celebratory place and dressing characters as stylishly as possible. He liked the idea that everything seems happy, but just underneath the surface "the third Reich is crumbling, and, you know, the dream is over."

He also told the story of "Hitler Youth".....Toward the end of the war they captured a few Hitler youth and the American C.O. had been in a German POW camp and HATED Germans. So he put the youth against a chalk board with their noses in a chalk ring and would beat them with a riding crop if they stepped down.....Dad volunteered to watch the kids while the CO. could go eat, drink, etc....Dad would let the kids sit down every time the CO left....Dad just saw KIDS....Misguided kids.....

For the memories of those lost and their enduring flame that kept them going forward. As humans we shouldn't be shy and look away at the horror we're capable of doing to each other. It should horrify you, break your heart, and piss you off because that shit should be called out and stopped. We need to look it in the eye and know what it is so we can steer clear of that hate. Jojo's father is off fighting in the resistance. His mother is working from home, distributing literature. The SS is at the house looking through her belongings for pamphlets and other information about the resistance. They have already hung her at this point. Captain K knows about it, and he also suspects Jojo's mom was hiding a Jewish person because he knows she's a resistor (he, being gay, and she, being a resistor, had a mutual understanding) and because of Jojo's questions. Captain K went to the house with Jojo's mother's bike, actually, and to protect Jojo (and, along with Jojo, Elsa) as yes, both Jojo and Elsa would be killed or taken to a 'camp' on the spot if she was found by the SS. That's why he grabbed the 'papers' so fast, to make sure none of the other men would be able to check it out. He, being friendly with the family, knows about Inga where the SS apparently don't. Also, she was close on the birthday guess as she was friends with Inga from school, before the war. So she would have an approximate idea of Inga's birthday as she'd probably been to birthday parties at the house, but not the exact day. Captain K saved her and he saved Jojo as well.

And yes, the Nazi youth was absolutely real. It wasn't comical as depicted in this movie, obviously. But the uniforms, combat training exercises, propaganda and indoctrination were real. Jojo's mom, allowing him to participate, was actually for his safety. In the street battle scene, where you see the old 'German shepherds' and the children coming out to fight, that isn't far from the truth. By the end of WWII, Nazis were asking civilians to come out and defend their towns and cities, as the military was mostly devastated by this point, and there was no money left to build a new army. Aside from about 75,000,000 deaths worldwide, WWII also physically destroyed about 1/3 of Europe, not to mention about the same percentage of Asia and parts of Africa as well, particularly northern parts of Africa. German citizens were in deep poverty by the time the Nazis surrendered. They truly didn't care about what they did or whom they did it to. They sold out their own people, their own country, their own continent.

Taika Waititi is an amazing director, writer, and comedian. He’s half Māori half Jewish. His mom made him read the book this movie is based on, then he asked her if it was ok to play hitler in the film. They both thought it would be funny if a half brown half Jewish man played the role and that it would be the most offensive to hitler. Please watch more of his movies, Hunt for the Wilderpeople is my favorite. Love your reactions and your copilots

I always wished we got a moment with his mom at the end there in the kitchen, like as if his dad's surrogate father-figure voice in his head is now replaced by his mom's. JoJo tries to kick Hitler, does nothing. His mom appears with a smile and a "C'mon, you can do better than that." They cut back to the scene we got, successful kick out the window! Oh well. That was still a wonderful watchalong with you, so thanks for that!

I was over the moon when I saw that you were going to review this movie! I’ve seen it so many times, although the first time it was definitely a WTF am I watching moment. Then it went on my top ten list!
Director Taika Waititi (who’s Jewish) was perfectly cast to portray Hitler as a dangerous buffoon who we got to see through the eyes of an impressionable child. And Sam Rockwell, come on! Every time I glimpse a similar pair of two-tone shoes, it still feels like a gut punch.
Kudos for another fantastic review! Hugs to the copilots.

So Sam rockwells character was on the moms side, she and he were longtime friends, that’s why she kept going and talking to him to have him take care of jojo and putting him in the Hitler Youth Program under Sam knowing he wouldn’t push the propaganda and would be safe. He’s clearly gay and would be hung for it if anyone found out so he’d hate the Nazi Risime for hating and exterminating homosexuals. When the Gustoppe shows up after they’ve hung his mom we see Sam come sprinting in the door clearly having just seen his old best friend hung and wanting to keep his promise of protecting Jojo he hauls to the house says he was in the area and bike got a flat which we see when he sets it down it doesn’t have a flat. The gistoppe shows up to search jojos house for anything from her reblion actions but also to make a judgement on jojo on whether he needs to be hung too, if he knew she was helping the resistance. They see jojo knows nothing of her work with the west , then finds jojos book with the offensive pictures and comments confirming to him he’s a “true nazi” then asks for the girls papers notice Sam steps up front and takes them from her facing mostly towards the gustoppe so they can’t see the date on the papers and asks her what her birthdate is . He grabbed it becasue he knows from jojos mom that jojos sister isn’t alive so he makes sure if she gets the date wrong. Which she did and he says correct, then tells jojo to NOT leave the house for the rest of the night not wanting him to see his mom hung. The. Saves jojo in the end. I wish his character had told the Americans he’s been helping keep a resistance fighter safe and is gay which would just help confirm that. He never pushed Hitlers propoganda , he helped keep her and son and daughters friend safe and off the radar , saves jojos life and the Jewish girls life and then gets executed . Many SS were executed on the spot when found or surrendered becasue they are the worst of the worst , the ones that would find young new mothers thst refused to fight when Hitler ordered all Germans to fight, many many mothers and children would flee and hide to not participate , the SS would then search for them and when found they’d break the mothers legs to casue unbearable pain and make it impossible to stand or walk then would “crucify “ the baby in front of the mom placing it upside down alive and screaming tied to a plank or a roof above the mom , they tie her to the spot and leave many times breaking her arms as welll, they did this so the mom who refused to abandon her baby and fight for a casue she doesn’t believe in has to sit in the worst pain unable to walk ir stand or use her arms so she physically could not stand to get her crying baby down having to watch it pass away over hours to days, then she’d pass away. They’d mark SS by the baby and that was to send so much fear into Germans souls that they’d fight out of fear but moreso they did this in the end of the war as the Allie’s were pushing east into Germany , they’d go to the cities the Allie’s would be comming through with a couple days and place to mother and baby at the entrance to the town so the Allie’s would see these evil autrocities in every town they press through hoping it would scare the forces and stop them from advancing . It did the opposite though some SS commanders got wind of these actions and were disgusted and angry they were torturing German moms and their babies . A number of SS battalions and commanders were relieved of duty with several actually being imprisoned but most that were were pardoned by Hitler for doing “all they could to motivate everyone to fight” towards the end as command fell apart, Germans both civilian and those forces to fight began handling things like that on their own without using the chain of command required to relieve an SS or imprison. A number of h German command voluntarily requested to report thsie type of crimes agaisnt humanity detailing the crimes , the soldiers involved , their last known location. Those names would be sifted through German cities and pow camps to try to find these men. There were many recorded events of Hitler youth units of children would come out when a city was taken and the worst of SS fleeing their duties at the front would “take command “ of a youth unit withdraw to a safe location so they could then lead the group of kids out with a white flag claiming they’d disobey command and take the children to safety until the Allie’s arrived . This type of scenario was demonstrated in the Movie Fury. As the Americans reach the entry to the city we see underage girls hanging with signs saying they were Germans who refused to fight , SS , the first stop we see unarmed Hitler youth (which most were unarmed at the end of the war , they send them with grenades becasue there weren’t enough guns. By that time in the war the Americans had seen way too many of these horrors committed and already had cooperation of who was doing these so when they’d get word of an SS commander leading a Hitler youth unit in surrendering , they’d guide the kids out of site to search them , keep the commander behind and executed him on the spot. In fury the kids are led out by the commander and Brad Pitt sees him , note the instant furiostity he expresses ordering a soldier to execute him now. It’s textbook what happened but obviously they’d never of showed in infant in thst state in a movie replacing it with young children which is still so terrible. I wish they had mentioned why he had him executed becasue I’ve noticed proper thst see it many thst don’t know anything about WW2 get upset that he kills a soldier in a sling thst “took care of the youth soldiers and was surrendering. The hanging young German girls were hunted and hung by people like him . Many people have a very wrong misconception of the German soldiers believing they were forced ti fight , the men were fighting for years , forced to or not it’s important to read history accounts of what these Germans units did to foreigners when they’d mow through a town , many feared combat so they’d volunteer to serve at the concentration camps and work camps where constant war crimes were committed , extermination , torture , experimentation and ZERO TOLERANCE . The German forces for the first years mowed through many coutnries murdering , executing , raping , if a German was forced to be in a unit and his unit wiped out 300 cities and civilians there and they didn’t go awol in those years of helping the Nazi marchine, there’s NO special credit given . They participated in 45 MILLION DEAD IN EAUROOE AND RUSSIA . The SS soldiers were the worst which is what the soldier was Brad had killed . Many people upset he hd an SS Comander killed , makes me sick and sad so many don’t know the truth. There’s a documentary on UA-cam with real footage and photos of the end of the war . It shows 4 of the mother child evil documented for the allied leaders . It made me sick , it’s not talked about or reinacted becasue of its disturbing nature but it’s important to know the truth about history becasue this is what Happens , people comment upset an SS commander was shot . They do it becasue they don’t know the facts , not propoganda but actual Vidal evidence . I still feel so sick and angry about what i saw but it puts into perspective what we were fighting agaisnt.
The babies upside down on upside down crosses were done to offend Christian’s in the worst way which most American soldiers were but it backfired. Many journal entries of Americans at the tip of the spear finding these poor mothers and child wrote that on many occasions they’d take their objective city completing the days mission, you can then take some rest until the next push but journal entries recorded that on MANY OCCASIONS the unit would chose to press on to thenenxt city out of anger and to end the war as fast as possible. A number of small detachment units would go ahead in the night to try to locate these SS and help and alove victims. My grandfather NEVER talked about his ww2 experience and I can see why , all he ever said was we were fighting pure evil , had to stop it. Those images forever define my grandpas definition of the evil they were fighting. Around 80-90 MILLION HUMAN BIENGS DEAD BECASUE OF NAZI GERMANY AND HITLER , nearly 100,000,000 dead!!!??? Please don’t comment about the Nazis being no different than us, that they were defending their nation, read some history books if you feel that way, you’ll never feel the same again.

When he said they steal the ends of penises, he was talking about circumcisions where the rabbi cuts the baby's foreskin, which is a very common thing to this day. However it's still something that even to this day I can never understand. I genuinely don't see any point but it's spreading as traditional more and more. I would need someone to explain.
