This video review is by far the best review of Solo work by Pink Floyd members. None of the solo work meets the standard by Pink Floyd collaborations as the artistic tension that adds so much is missing. This does not take away from the overall quality of their artistry. Ricks Broken China does not receive a lot of credit. I never really got the album until I viewed a rare RIck Interview where he discusses its relationship with depression. I have personally credited Ricks contribution as the key to the Pink Floyd sound. I really enjoy their solo music and include it in my play lists. It blends with PF very well!

I disagree. I think if you combined the solo albums with the Pink Floyd albums Amused to Death would definitely be in the top five. I think Radio Kaos is better than portrayed in the video.

@@Rhiannon011 June 6 1984, Was my first PF/Solo related concert. David was incredible. I will never forget it. Have not missed a tour since of any member. Even a few one off benefit shows. I was so happy he played so much solo. Only 3 Pink Floyd songs if I recall, Money, Comfortably Numb and Run Like Hell. He didn't have an opening act becasue the opening band had a family member die, I want to say it was supposed to be Icicle Works. He ended up with a lame comedian as a opener. Saw Roger a month later with Eric Clapton. 1984 was a great year to be 18.

Lets not forget that the recording sessions for this album produced the song foundation for Comfortably Numb, the melody and chord sequence for the patient verses. That is an iconic melody and went spare/demo from this album but he played it for Bob Ezrin who fell in love with the potential, thankfully.

Great list, thanks for the upload. I’d put “Pros & Cons” at #1, but it probably only resonates so strongly with me because it was the soundtrack to my divorce. “Fictitious Sports”, or so the legend goes, was a Carla Bley project with Mason acting only as the drummer, and all involved were quite surprised when the record company put Mason’s name on the headline of project. Anyhow, I love it. Just as “Momentary” can be considered a DG solo album, I think one can also consider “The Final Cut” as a RW solo album...

Excellent video. Disagree on a few of those but 17 albums that will happen. Including the Body was good but what about When the Wind Blows? I get it that it was only a partial solo work but as a companion to Radio KAOS and even part of the evolution of KAOS. KAOS on the road used bits and pieces, , mainly the closing of Folded Flags. which gave me goosebumps and really was emotional after Home and Four Minutes. I woudl love a full worked over reissue of KAOS with all the b sides, Molly's Song, Going to live in L.A. and Get Back to Radio. Yes ATD is the top solo album by far. Great video and very well made points. I can tell you are a true fan.

The songs on 'The Final Cut' were so much stronger than those on the creatively brilliant 'Amused to Death.' 'The Final Cut' kicked 'Amused to Death' to the curb, at least for me. Oh oh oh... You missed out 'When The Wind Blows' in which Roger did all of Side 2 on the soundtrack to the animated movie 'When The Wind Blows.' Maybe.. not 'technically' a solo album ,but he certainly had original material on it, even Clare Torry doing vocals. I love Roger's, Amused To Death & Music From The Body, solo albums best. Saw Pros & Cons at Earls Court in 1984, fantastic show.. movie screens & quad sounds, Roger telling someone off in the audience for whistling.. lol. Had seen David Gilmour's solo gig in Dublin 31 March 1984, great songs, tho' he didn't play 'No way' or 'I can't breathe anymore' live, great songs! Kate Bush was at the mixing desk wearing a blonde wig. Radio KAOS was somewhat pop-music sounding.. but great concert at Wembley Arena in 1987 with Alan Ladd as onstage DJ, great quad sound effects & graphics, phone booth for audience fans to phone Roger on stage. Not overly keen on later Gilmour solo albums, bit mellow compared to Roger's rage, but Gilmour plays wonderful guitar solos. Not happy about his missus writing lyrics, tho' she is a good word smith in her own right. Wright's solo work was a bit supermarket/elevator sounding, but has some lovely Hammond Organ parts. Not overly keen on Nick Mason's solos, tho' Fictitious Sports was good in parts. Favourite Syd solo album was a bootleg, used to have the picture disc, wish I could remember the name, but 'brilliant' songs on there, never released. Wish I could remember the name, but loved Effervescent Elephant, Vegetable Man, & many others on there.. so trippy & creative, childish... even. His 2 official solo albums were clearly experimental & incomplete, tho' I liked some tracks on there like Baby Lemonade, Gigilo Aunt. l'd like to see you do an album review on German band Eloy's Planets album. I love.. the 2nd track! called 'Point Of No Return' so apt in today's political environmental issues.

Interesting stuff as always with your ranking videos. Just a couple of comments. I purchased Ummagumma in my first year at college, loved the live disc but only enjoyed the Roger Water's tracks on the studio one. (Yes I even enjoyed the small furry animals grooving with a pict.) This was the first Floyd album I had heard and ever since I have felt that the creative genius was Waters. The others were great musicians but not more than that, and I include David Gilmour in that comment. Excellent guitarist but no more. As a result I have only enjoyed amongst the solo albums Water's own issues. He had a few duds of course. But most had a lot of magic. Second comment on Radio Kaos; while I agree with your normal comments about production values at the time, it's still sufficiently inventive to be further up your list I think. Final comment, I have yet to be convinced by all those who regard Syd Barrett as the ultimate sad and flawed genius. I cannot rate him so high and I suspect that if he had not walked back up to his mother's place and left the band, Floyd would never have done what they eventually did under Roger Water's leadership.

Perhaps it did not quite fit in comfortably, but Roger Waters' contributions to the soundtrack to 'When The Wind Blows' surely deserved an honorary mention, as should 'Opel' by Syd Barret, the 1988 album of the best of the unreleased solo work by Syd that David Gilmour had to coax Syd into giving permission for it to get released.

I have a pronounced dislike for Rogers politics and it has affected my view of his post-Floyd work but, Amused to Death was a favorite of mine before I began to be off-put by his vitriolic ramblings in interviews. It didn't bother me in the context of the music until he began to angrily rant about his political leanings in interviews that I tuned in to hear about his insights into the inner workings of the band and the possibility of a reunion. I guess it shouldn't have surprised me given that the rest of the guys had pointed to Roger's culpability for the rift. My top 5 are as follows:
    5) David Gilmour
    4) Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking
    3) Rattle That Lock
    2) Amused To Death
    1) On An Island

Nice video. In my world it seems like their solo work often get left far behind compared to the Pink Floyd legacy. Same goes with Led Zeppelin and a few other big acts which members done their own thing. Also nice to see them all compared, not just the work from one member at the time. Makes it easier for people new to their music!

In fairness, there could be an argument that The Wall and The Final Cut qualify here: the back cover of the Final Cut has that album being "by Roger Waters, performed by Pink Floyd", and The Wall was to some extent the same.

A fine video. I ignored the solo albums for many years (a habit I seem to have regardless of how much I love the source band).
I'd move Radio KAOS up and About Face down, perhaps even swapping places. I like the Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking more than you too.
Waters is the clear winner as far as I'm concerned although, when I listen to them, I yearn for Gilmour to appear with his trademark guitar solos. Clapton and Beck don't have the tones that provide the contrast as well as Gilmour. Such a shame Gilmour and Waters broke up their creative partnership as they were better together than separate.

I like Gilmour’s first solo album - but the corny and trivially rhythmic lyrics pushes it out of the number 2 position imo.
Amused to Death is a brilliant piece of creative work. And Beck provides that unique sonic spice that elevates the album to another level. One of my favourite albums - full stop!

Made me wonder how many of these were actually solo albums in the sense of being made while the artist in question was still in the band. Not a criticism of the video, which is great, and "solo" is a perfectly good tag for covering the entire body of work, it's just it sparked my curiosity. Also, bit of a silly one this really, but should the solo sections from Umma Gumma have been included? Not actual albums I suppose.
