My friend, your use of words to describe these albums is nothing short of art itself. Very bold, although understandable, to place the wall at #8. The Dark Side of the Moon has been so important to me and the lyrics have evolved as I grow old. Rather, I have evolved with the lyrics. Very well done video, my friend! Keep up the great work!
@@classicalbum With pleasure, my man. You have a new rabid subscriber for sure. Passing on knowledge of great music and sharing what music means to use is a duty we have been saddled with. A badge to wear proudly. Cheers!
@@michaelsalisbury1477 Marooned was pretty good track. Also the lyric: So I open my door to my enemies And ask can we wipe the ate clean But they tell me to please go fuck myself You know you just can’t win No doubt a shot at a certain band mate. 😉
@@michaelsalisbury1477 Interestingly, I was in a bar one time, and some younger people, offspring of my friends, asked me what bands I liked. (Which is only a step up from 'What's your favourite colour?') After naming a few bands they'd never heard of, I said Pink Floyd. They said that they quite liked The Division Bell, but didn't know much about the earlier stuff... (I've heard The Division Bell probably twice, and that was enough for me.)
Animals is leaps and bounds better than The Wall, in my opinion. I just looked at The Wall tracklist to refresh my memory, and I could fit the tracks I like from it on one side
@@monty2005 It's curious that, from reading the comments on UA-cam videos, Animals is like Marmite. You either love it or hate it. Maybe hate is too strong a word for Animals, but until The Wall was released, it was my least favorite of my Floyd collection. But then The Wall took that slot...
@@lazer2365 I agree about the Marmite thing. Animals came out a few months before I was born, so I can only remember The Wall coming out onwards (I remember being terrified by the video to Brick 2 when it was on Top of the Pops around Christmas ‘79). After I discovered DSotM and WYWH in my mums record collection around the age of 10 or 11, and Dark Side especially kicking off my PF habit, I went out and got the albums over yhe next few years (or got people to give them me as gifts). Animals was the last one of the big ones that I got, having always put it off because it only had five tracks. I can still remember the day I brought it home and listened to it for the first time. It was truly a WOW moment. I fell in love with the album the first time I ever heard it. It is my absolute favourite album, by any artist/band ever! Having heard the 2018 remix of Dogs, it’s given me a second WOW moment. Pigs is my favourite track, so I can’t wait until the 16th to hear it. I just wish there were live recordings from the In the Flesh tour, like professional ones. I definitely remember reading that James Guthrie was asked to work on one show from that tour after the success of Is There Anybody Out There, but for some reason he felt he couldn’t do it justice, yet it’s said there are no professional multi tracks of any of the shows. At least we have Oakland ‘77! As for The Wall, for me too it occupies my least favourite slot, at least of the Meddle onwards albums, but I had always wanted to see it performed live, and I was lucky enough to see Roger do it at Birmingham in an arena setting then again at Wembley Stadium. I have to say that was another WOW moment, especially at Birmingham. I’d love to see all of Animals performed live. Have you ever heard Live Frogs Set 2 by Les Claypool? It’s a fucking amazing set consisting entirely of Animals live!
I mean they have some eh albums. But yea a lot of their best stuff is very good. I think what’s so impressive isn’t the amount of good stuff (there are bands that have a larger amount of good albums), but just how good the good stuff is. They really have like 2 or 3 of the greatest albums ever.
Atom Heart Mother is the most unterrated album from Pink Floyd. I like that it is ranked so high in this video. Although i rank AHM "only" on fourth place it is the Floyd Album I listened to the most.
But #2? Come on. That is absurd. The fact that the 1970 BBC sessions are superior across the board is reason enough to relegate the album to middle at best.
1 - Meddle 2 - Animals 3 - Dark Side Of The Moon 4 - Wish You Were Here 5 - A Saucerful Of Secrets 6 - Atom Heart Mother 7 - A Momentary Lapse Of Reason 8 - Obscured By Clouds 9 - Division Bell 10 - The Wall 11 - The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn 12 - The Endless River 13 - More 14 - Ummagumma 15 - The Final Cut
I heartily agree! I love this album! It's almost my favorite offering from Pink Floyd but then again just about everything from Pink Floyd could be be favorite album. Anyway, I really like the Funky Dung section.
Animals is my favourite Pink Floyd album along with Wish You Were Here. I agree the Division Bell is a very underrated album in the Pink Floyd catalogue.
I love your vocabulary and ability to beautifully articulate your opinions. And I appreciate that you ranked DSOTM at #1. Some Floyd connoisseurs are afraid to praise it in fear of conformity.
While I consider "Animals" to be PF's best album and it's most listenable, especially over time, my favorite PF album is "The Wall". Right album at the right time for my teenage self in '79-'80. Thanks, Barry. P.S. "Acid-drenched Cheshire Cat".....I gotta find a way to work that into a conversation :-)
Nice to see 'Piper...' and 'Meddle' that high up :-) The Division Bell never did a lot for me. 'Atom Heart Mother' over 'Wish You Were Here' and 'Animals' is a brave move...
Yes I know... but it is an album I love. I think people should just see these lists for what they are, an individual expression of personal taste.. I always say, the most important thing is we are all listening to the music albeit in a different order
@@classicalbum fully agree. In my twenties I was - like many music fans - rather obsessed with lists and rankings, but nowadays rather share the view that a ranking is rather impossible, or more of a basis to discuss individual opinions.
Brilliant video again Barry & my own top 10 Floyd albums are... 1 - Animals 2 - Wish You Were Here 3 - The Dark Side Of The Moon 4 - Meddle 5 - Obscured By Clouds 6 - The Wall 7 - The Division Bell 8 - Atom Heart Mother 9 - More 10 - A Saucerful Of Secrets...
I'm giving you a 'like' for your top-5, Stevie - probably my top 5 albeit not necessarily in the same order (but you'd never get any two Floyd fans agreeing that). A special thumbs-up for including the hugely under-appreciated OBC in your top 5 - full of excellent focused songs, great guitar playing, a few atmospherics, and, hell, I even like Rick Wright's love song Stay. Peace.
Strange, it seems to have become modern to rank ANIMALS at number 1. When the Album came out 1977 everyone hated it - and I hated it too (I was 12 years old then). Today I like it more since i understand the meaning of the album better today, but musically it is definitely not one of the best.
@@martinrasinger6306 Yes, I think you're right, Martin, Animals has generally gained in appreciation over the years. I would have it as high as a top 4 or 5. Still Dark Side at 1, for me, though.
The Wall behind Division Bell? Really? The Wall should be top 5 easy. I do like where you put A Momentary Lapse Of Reason though. That album is better than a lot of people say.
I'd agree that A Momentary Lapse of Reason is decent. On the Turning Away is probably my favorite, and Learning to Fly would be second. I would put it somewhere around The Wall overall.
I really enjoyed this video - I never care what the actual rankings are on these videos, as long as enough respect is paid to the artist and what went in to making the recordings, and this video does more than enough of this. What I found most striking was how much there is to love even in the 'minor' PF records.
'The Dark Side of the Moon' is definitely my favourite PF album; in fact it is a very serious contender ( along with several others ) for the title of ' The Best Album Ever ' IMO.
I don't suppose there would be many Pink Floyd fans would agree totally with ratings here. Doesn't matter, all their albums are there to enjoy, l did agree with one thing said, DSOTM is my favourite album too. EVER!! 😄
15: More 14: Ummagumma 13: The Endless River 12: Obscured by Clouds 11: A Momentary Lapse of Reason 10: A Saucerful of Secrets 9: The Final Cut 8: The Division Bell 7: Atom Heart Mother 6: The Piper at the Gates of Dawn 5: Meddle 4: The Wall 3: The Dark Side of the Moon 2: Wish You Were Here 1: Animals
I find The Final Cut to be more of a reflection of my life afflictions than any other of their albums. The Final Cut has been one of the albums that make me cry every single time I listen to it and I always recommend it to others. It is one of my favorite albums by Pink Floyd and I don't find any post-Waters production worth musically or content-wise, except for maybe a couple of songs from a couple of albums. I have spent entire months dwelling in The Final Cut. I find it has one of the most dramatic abrupt nuances in the entire Pink Floyd catalog. And it requires tremendous sensitivity and tremendous fortitude to listen to it. No other album requires this type of self-check and mental preparation from the listener. David Gilmour does an amazing job where he contributes in it and I love the sax player's contribution as well. The lyrics are superb, touching, painful, deep. They tear the soul like no other album does.
The fact that you have the same Top 5 as me is awesome. Mines a different order: 1. Wish You Were Here 2. Meddle 3. Animals 4. Dark Side Of The Moon 5. Atom Heart Mother
Putting the wall 8 is mad. Very bold people will be coming for you 😂. Well done for having your own opinion and not going off what others think though 👍
I agree with this list, however, I would swap Wish You Were Here with Atom Heart Mother. Also, I realize that The Wall is Waters' Magnum Opus yet three of its best songs were co-written with Gilmour.
I agree with the sentiment that “The Final Cut” is essentially a Roger Waters solo record. But if that is so, then we need to consider “A Momentary Lapse of Reason” as being a David Gilmour solo record, and in my view “The Final Cut” is vastly superior, and it didn’t need remixing.
@@vicinvesta8349 I'm aware that those albums have been created under Roger's supervision, his lyrics are great. However, especially David's and Rick's musical work on "Animals" is incredible, so I don't think you can tell it a Waters solo album. Also, the musical pearls on "The Wall" shine because of David's musical work. When you compare "The final Cut" to Water's real solo albums you can clearly hear, that it has only Floyd in the name, all the great influence of the other band members are missing (unfortunately) - no comparison to "Animals" or "The Wall"!
Roger Waters sounds a lot like Donald Trump: In October 2016, Waters arrogantly announced: "We are going to take a new show on the road. The content is very secret. It’ll be a mixture of stuff from my long career, stuff from my years with Pink Floyd, some new things. Probably 75% of it will be old material and 25% will be new, but it will be all connected by a general theme. It will be a cool show, I promise you. It’ll be spectacular, like all my shows have been." Wow, that's better than Alec Baldwin. Bigly.
We’ll just like Donald Trump, he deserves to be that arrogant. After all he has achieved, I think he can confidently say that it is going to be a good show
I am not the biggest fan of Pink Floyd but I think this is a great review. I am probably one of the few that loves "The Division Bell". I still listen to that album quite a bit. It has an emotional feel that just sets it apart from many albums. I think it is one of the best albums ever. Keep up the great reviews.
My ranking 15. The Endless River 14. More 13. A Momentary Lapse Of Reason 12. Ummagumma 11. The Final Cut 10. The Division Bell 9. A Saucerful Of Secrets 8. Atom Heart Mother 7. Obscured By Clouds 6. Piper At The Gates Of Dawn 5. Animals 4. Wish You Were Here 3. Dark Side Of The Moon 2. The Wall 1. Meddle
I want to like the division bell...I love waters and Gilmour...I love momentary lapse of reason and the final cut...I know people like it and most like it more than momentary...I just never felt the songs had any life to them..im currently listening to it on regular rotation hoping it had grown on me..
I agree with one of your points. I can’t understand him or anyone ranking The Wall that low. I do agree that it’s a lot better than The Division Bell though, that is actually bordering on embarrassing
I understand putting it 4th, but for me it is second only to Dark Side. I also find myself listening to The Wall almost as much - probably a product of it coming out just as I hit high school so the nostalgia is strong with it.
I know it's an unpopular opinion, but I think The Final Cut is one of the very best Floyd albums. Despite the cooling relationship between Waters and Gilmour, it also contains some great guitar work.
Agree 100%. My feeling has always been if you like the Wall, then you’ll like the Final Cut. I love every tune except Not Now John sounds out of place with the rest of the material.
In my opinion THE FINAL CUT was the last really interesting Floyd album. Good Lyrics and strong melodies. But I do not like all the screams, explosions and machine noises. Without that it would be a much better album.
At last someone who agrees with me about Atom heart Mother, hats off to you sir I may not agree with your placing of meddle but your top 3 are spot on, in my opinion
1. The Wall 2. Animals 3. Darkside of the Moon 4. Wish You Were Here 5. Meddle 6. The Final Cut 7. Piper At the Gates of Dawn 8. A Saucerful of Secrets 9. Obscured by Clouds 10. A Moumentary Lapse or Reason
A great video. I like how you can still see (listen to) the good in your lower ranking PF albums. So, so good to have Atom Heart Mother right up there. Nice one.👍
I loved that you speak as a true fan of the band's work. Congrats, mate! I feel exactly the same you do about the 2019 mix of A Momentary lapse of Reason. For me, it just became a true Pink Floyd album and I could finally enjoy all of those beautiful songs such as Terminal Frost or Yet Another Movie. Rick's keyboards from live performances and Nick's rerecorded drums just gave it that "timeless" feeling. Here's my ranking: 1 Dark Side of The Moon 2 The Division Bell 3 Wish You Were Here 4 Meddle 5 The wall 6 Animals 7 A momentary lapse of reason 8 Obscured by clouds 9 Atom heart mother 10 The final cut 11 The endless river 12 A sarceful of secrets 13 Piper at the gates of dawn 14 More 15 Ummagumma
Animals is their most underrated and one of their best albums. The lyrics are more relevant now than they were in 1977. I've been fortunate to have seen Pink Floyd live three times, Waters three times and Gilmour five times on solo tours. I'm 60, play the guitar, drums and some keyboards.
No one ever shares my worst to best: 15. The Final Cut 14. The Wall 13. The Division Bell 12. Ummagumma 11. Atom Heart Mother 10. More 09. Saucerful of Secrets 08. Meddle 07. A Momentary Lapse of Reason 06. Wish You Were Here 05. Animals 04. Endless River 03. Obscured By Clouds 02. Piper At the Gates of Dawn 01. Dark Side of the Moon For the record, I love all these albums except The Final Cut
Atom is my fave. It's got spooky bits, religous sounding choirs and I think the first extended Gilmour solo where we hear the fantastic melodies he can create, backed with a funky rythm which is developed in Echoes. And then there is Fat Old Sun...........WOW
Great ranking of the Floyd albums. I am just about to embark on my Album week where i choose a band and listen to 7 of their albums. This was a great guide for me .
I really don’t like TFC. I haven’t listened to it in decades, so I will give it another go and let you know if I change my mind. I think it’s (by far) the Floyd’s worst album. Just awful.
1. Louder Than Words 2. The Dark Side Of The Moon 3. The Division Bell 4. Wish You Were Here 5. A Momentary Lapse Of Reason 6. Animals 7. The Wall 8. The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn 9. Meddle 10. The Ginal Cut 11. Ummagumma 12. More 13. A Saucerful Of Secrets 14. Atom Heart Mother 15. Obscured By Clouds
Love your list. Similar to mine. Final Cut too high on the list and Saucerful too low. To each his own. My list: 15. The Final Cut 14. More 13. Momentary 12. The Endless River 11. Ummagumma 10. Obscured 9. The Wall 8. Atom 7. Division Bell 6. Piper 5. Animals 4. Meddle 3. Saucerful 2. Dark Side 1. Wish You Were Here No slot is etched in stone but this pretty much makes up my list.
Although they are considered as studio albums in their catalog, I don't consider "More" and "Obscured by Clouds" as such, just like Peter Gabriel's "Birdy" and "Passion" aren't considered as studio albums in his catalog. Those two albums are soundtracks, but nevermind. Here's my list: 1) The Dark Side of the Moon - arguably the greatest album in rock history 2) The Wall - one of the greatest conceptual albums and sheer grandiosity of the album is unreal (my favourite album of all time) 3) Wish You Were Here - Shine on & Wish You Were Here, what more to say, two of their greatest songs 4) Animals - very underrated album, doesn't get the recognition it deserves 5) Meddle - their classic period began with this one, they've found their sound with it, Echoes - what more to say 6) The Divison Bell - best post Waters album 7) The Final Cut - not as good as their previous 4 albums, if it was done more as a band project rather than a solo album by Waters, it could've been a masterpiece 8) The Piper at the Gates of Dawn - really a period piece, very psychedelic but very good as a debut album 9) Atom Heart Mother - aside from the horrible cover art, a very good album 10) Obsured by Clouds - underrated too, overshadowed by the release of Dark Side soon after, but it contains some of their best acoustic work 11) A Saucerful of Secrets - struggling to find a way without Barret, but it's got some good songs 12) A Momentary Lapse of Reason - very weak by PF standards, only "On the Turning Away" and "Sorrow" save this album from being bad, too much elevator music and ambient noodling 13) The Endless River - leftovers from AMLOR and TDB, tribute to Wright, nothing more 14) Ummagumma - it's saved by the live album, studio album is atrocious, some of the worst songs in their entire catalog is on this one (several species....) 15) More - they were really struggling in 1969 to find a direction, resulting in 2 very bad albums.
If I have to hear another ten minute guitar solo, I'm going to start listening to EDM. 😡😁 Thanks for mentioning High Hopes, I've always had a soft spot for that track. I saw the Division Bell tour, just outside Paris in the mid 90's, and we all had to queue for two hours to get in... Someone joked that Syd Barrett must have been checking tickets. 😂
I find myself listening to "More" more (ahem) than, dare I say it, Atom Heart Mother and Obscured by clouds. On the other hand I haven't listened to Ummagumma (completely agree with your pronunciation) for about 15 years. I quite like the more "bite-size" experimentation on More and love the pastoral aspects you pick up on, crossed with the harsh (Nile Song and its later reprise in "Ibiza Bar" - two of the heaviest tracks Floyd ever recorded). Perhaps the discipline (whatever it may have been) of writing for a film helped focus the noodling just a bit?
Very good review. I'm surprised Atom Heart Mother is ranked as second, though. It would probably be 9th or 10th on my list. My top ten would be ; 1) Dark Side, 2) Wish You Were Here, 3) Pipers at The Gates of Dawn, 4) The Wall, 5) Animals, 6) Saucer full of secrets 7) Meddle, 8) The Final Cut, 9) Atom Heart Mother, 10) Division Bell.
This is an absolutely brilliant video, filled with such genuinely great commentary and review, superbly dissecting each album and giving a clear and concise talk through of them. Wonderful. Man, you’re very good! My top 3 Pink Floyd albums would be; 1 Dark side of the moon 2 Wish you were here 3 Piper at the gates of dawn Really though, such a great band and so many amazing albums Best wishes
Thank you for heading the list with DSOTM. Like the many, I know the album off by heart but am still captivated. I remember the time and place of first listening, Gateway boys school, Leicester, in the crypt under the headmasters study. Spending all of my pocket money at Revolver records in the market place as I gazed at the "in store" display that linked up the album covers on every wall as Wayne took my cash and sent me on my way.🌑
1. The Wall 2. The Piper at the Gates of Dawn 3. Wish You Were Here 4. The Dark Side of the Moon 5. A Saucerful of Secrets 6. Atom Heart Mother 7. Meddle 8. Animals 9. The Division Bell 10. More
DSOTM & WYWH: outstanding Meddle: great (because of Echoes) The Wall: moments of excellence, but too few The Piper at the Gates of Dawn: wonderfully whimsical and of the moment Atom Heart Mother: not too shabby The rest: ranging from okish to meh to boring
A well researched review and analysis of the albums! For now, my ranking would be: 1. Wish you were here (Every song of this album is giving me goosebumps. Shine on you crazy diamond is the best composition in their whole carrier, in my opinion) 2. The Wall (It´s a fantastic journey and it has opened a new point of view on life for me) 3. The Animals (Fantastic melodies and great lyrics) 4. Dark Side of the Moon (My very first Space Rock album and my favourite one) 5. The Piper at the Gates of Dawn 6. A Saucerful of Secrets (I love Jugband Blues and Corporal Clegg) 7. Atom Heart Mother 8. The Final Cut (The lyrics are good) 9. A Momentary Lapse of Reason 10. The Divison Bell 11. More 12. Meddle 13. Obscured by Clouds 14. The Endless River 15. Ummagumma
A contrarian opinion on "More": It suffers from poor sequencing. If the instrumentals were first up with some segues between each, then the acoustic songs, concluding with the two heavy numbers it would work. I'd put it above The Final Cut, Atom Heart Mother, Ummagumma and the post-Roger Waters albums. I love its hippieness. The film is available on UA-cam.
A well-conceived and researched, idiosyncratic survey with plenty of valuable information. I was unaware that A MOMENTARY LAPSE OF REASON had been remixed. (Might be worth a listen.) Thanks also for the perspective on THE ENDLESS RIVER, another Floyd album that got by me. While I still lean toward MEDDLE, I have to admit to a growing appreciation of ATOM HEART MOTHER. DARK SIDE OF THE MOON is still #1 but I find I go there less and less, preferring the instrumental grooves of WISH YOU WERE HERE. ANIMALS was, indeed, the first of the 'angry' records. I played it a lot back in the day but that was my final 'real-time' Floyd purchase. Despite some astounding moments, THE WALL and FINAL CUT are really a chore to get through. Maybe I've yet to appreciate Waters' overall narratives. Personally, I find myself having more fun with UMMAGUMMA and the soundtrack albums. The two earliest albums are always worth going back to, gradually divulging their hidden secrets. Thanks again, Barry!
If you like the instrumentals may I suggest the 1972 (early mix) of DSotM? Specifically that version of Great Gig in the Sky. If you haven’t heard it, it doesn’t feature the female vocalist so there’s a lot more emphasis on the instrumentals.
@@ChiefXuligan I will be following your recommendation. For all its timeless genius, the one singular "blemish" on DSOTM, in my opinion, is the over extended vocal solo on Great Gig in the Sky.
All a matter of opinion but I have no time for Atom Heart Mother and I think The Wall is one of their most significant works. I would put the run of albums comprising Meddle, DSOTM, WYWH, Animals and The Wall as their top five.
brilliant as always. "Languid" is the perfect adjective for Nick Mason's drumming. Also loved the Cheshire Cat reference. Every time i listen to you i think "i would love to chat over a beer with this guy"
your description of Nick Mason's drumming made me think that the essence of Pink Floyd is that they were instrumentally 4 distinct and complementary "elements" Wright - Delicate Mason - Langid Waters - Ferocious Gilmore - Ethereal
Thanks -- I always appreciate your well thought out opinions. My #1 is The Final Cut (especially with the addition of "When The Tigers Broke Free"). Kurt Loder (Rolling Stone) gave it 5/5 stars (then followed that by giving "Pros and Cons..." 1 star). There is no disputing that it is, for all intents and purposes, a Roger Waters album.
Fantastic ranking/reviews! Very well put and interesting takes. My top 5: DSotM, DB, WYWH, Animals, Wall. It’s oddly refreshing to see someone else unafraid to say how great Dark Side of the Moon is. It feels like so many knock it down because of its popularity and how cliche it is to say it’s a masterpiece. But this is one of those cases where the hype is very much earned. I rarely throw the word “perfect” out about any piece of media/art. But it truthfully is the closest thing imaginable to perfect to me.
Difficult to out Dark Side anywhere else but at number one, surely it’s in the top three, top five at the very least of albums made by anyone. Pop, classical, soul , jazz …… oh and rock !,
1. "Dark Side of the Moon" 2. "the Wall" 3. "Wish You Were Here" (could change that with "the Wall" though) 4. "Animals" 5. "Piper at the Gates of Dawn" 6. "Meddle" 7. "Ummagumma" 8. "Atom Heart Mother" (the brass players don't sound like they are trying to play or this would be top 5) 9. "A Saucerful of Secrets" 10. "Division Bells" (timed really badly for me) 11. "More" 12. "Obscured by Clouds" 13. "Momentary Laps of Reason" (yet to have heard the new version) 14. "The Final Cut" (dig the lyrics but not the music)
I've just been binging a few of your videos. Really like the channel and your eloquent explanations, you're definitely doing your research and it shows. But oh my god we have some strong disagreements! I spat my beer out when I saw Dehumanizer so low on your Sabbath video and now seeing Atom Heart Mother so high made me do it twice within an hour.
You are superb! Such wonderful videos. Your voice is perfect for broadcasting and there’s such broad depth to your knowledge, vocabulary and use of phrases. Impressive Absolutely agree on your pick as best Floyd album. And hard to disagree with it being the greatest album of all time. Great album. Great band. Great video. Cheers. More more more! 👍👏
I asked my dad at 9 years old to by me the "teachers leave the kids alone..." album. That was how rock was introduced to me. The whole experience of listening 'the wall' on the very first time was indescribable. That's my musical reference till nowadays. Another album very impressive to me was 'momentary laps of reason', when everyone thought pink Floyd was dead after Roger walk away. At the time that album sounded so unique, I describe it as tunes from the heavens. Saying that, Pink Floyd before Dark side doesn't sound as good, final cut is the best Roger work, endless river is a beautiful tribute to Richard Wright and Shine on you crazy a consaconsecration of pink Floyd as a greatest Rock band of an rock era.
Momentary Lapse of Reason is more a pink floyd album since the the new remix, I also rather enjoy 'Endless River', and The Wall also had a massive impact on me when I was 11 years old.
Well, you are absolutely welcome to rank albums any way you choose. Which also means I am welcome to rank your credibility any way I choose. I guess you crossed a boundary with your ranking of The Wall, and I will seriously have to consider whether you have enough esteem left with me for me to view any other of your videos. Critics are always in danger of losing their audience by being too shallow in searching for the value in a piece. I wish you a good future and more depth.
Nothing to do with being shallow at all, I beleive The Wall has moments of brilliance but descends into bloated self-indulgent nonsense. Just because you disagree with me doesn't confer upon you greater depth... I wish you a good future and a more discerning listeing experince in the future.
1. Animals 2. The Wall 3. Wish You Were Here 4. The Dark Side of The Moon 5. The Division Bell 6. The Final Cut 7. A Momentary Lapse of Reason 8. Meddle 9. Obscured By Clouds 10. Great list, awesome to see someone giving Atom Heart Mother the respect it deserves. I have the same top 4 just in a different order, for me it’s 4. Wish you Were Here 3. Atom Heart Mother 2. Dark Side of the Moon 1. Animals
Great review! However, you left out one Pink Floyd LP! ‘Barrett’ 1970 was Produced by Gilmore & Wright, and Gilmore played Bass, Wright playing Keyboards! This LP is indicative of were PF would have been had they kept Syd in the band! A great LP!
I think Ummagumma used to be a highly regarded album amongst fans and critics for a long time, but maybe that perception changed overtime. I'd still rank it higher and definitely not the last. The live album is just fantastic. That last spot would be for Endless River. It's not a bad album, just coma inducing. As you said, PF was the sum of its parts, and without Roger there was a void of creativity and life you can hear in the post Waters albums. I do like the original mix of A Momentary over the remix for various reasons. The idea behind it was good, but it wasn't well executed. The last spot would be for Obscured by Clouds, most definitely. It amazes me that such weak effort was released between the great Meddle and DSOTM albums. Atom Heart Mother is an album that didn't age well for me, but it's really closer to Meddle than to the post Barret Avant Garde era. As for The Wall, side 3 is the strongest side, imo. Each side represents a stage, and side 3 is the alienation side, prior to madness. Unfortunately side 4 is a misfortune and I blame Bob Ezrin for such desatin.
I missed Pink Floyd at the time but now listen quite a lot. I enjoy it but they won't rank in my top bands, I see almost no musical progression between Meddle and Animals, yes the song writing gets better but the music pales next to the likes of King Crimson and Yes of the same time period. I think your ranking is pretty good.
My friend, your use of words to describe these albums is nothing short of art itself. Very bold, although understandable, to place the wall at #8. Interestingly, I was in a bar one time, and some younger people, offspring of my friends, asked me what bands I liked.
(Which is only a step up from 'What's your favourite colour?')
After naming a few bands they'd never heard of, I said Pink Floyd.
They said that they quite liked The Division Bell, but didn't know much about the earlier stuff...
(I've heard The Division Bell probably twice, and that was enough for me.)
Animals was "...eclipsed by Dark Side of the Moon and perhaps overshadowed by The Wall..." Well played, sir!
Animals is leaps and bounds better than The Wall, in my opinion. I just looked at The Wall tracklist to refresh my memory, and I could fit the tracks I like from it on one side
@@docdeens4030 Ah yes - but I was more commenting on the puns!
The puns are great. But Animals can be neither eclipsed or overshadowed by anything. It’s the best Pink Floyd album.

It's curious that, from reading the comments on UA-cam videos, Animals is like Marmite.
Who really reads Rolling Stone reviews.. That magazine is a joke.
and has been for decades!
Dark side is like #35 they're on crack
When ranking Floyd albums, it's not so much "worst to best", rather from merely excellent to legendary.
I do not agree. Some albums are just decent.
Except they DO have their share of crap.
atom heart mother is the only one i'd classify as bad
I mean they have some eh albums. But yea a lot of their best stuff is very good. I think what’s so impressive isn’t the amount of good stuff (there are bands that have a larger amount of good albums), but just how good the good stuff is. They really have like 2 or 3 of the greatest albums ever.
Stop lying to yourself. Final Cut is pretty bad and Ummagumma completely sucks.
Atom Heart Mother is fantastic. Just bliss.
I love Atom Heart, but it seems to get beaten up a lot out there...unfairly!
I believe that Pink Floyd regard Atom Heart Mother as an embarrassing mistake. Personally I like it a lot, and played it to death in my youth.

You have made the correct best assessment.
Me too. Class of 79. This was our class album of the year.
Nice to see 'Piper...' and 'Meddle' that high up :-)
The Division Bell never did a lot for me.

6 - The Wall
7 - The Division Bell

The Wall is way better I agree.

EVER!! 😄

I’m so glad you had “the Wall” where you did👏 great list
Opinion aside....
Totally agreed, personally tFC is my best Floyd album.

Roger has turned into Pink from the movie. Get em up against the wall
I agree with the sentiment that “The Final
Cut” is essentially a Roger Waters solo record. But if that is so, then we need to consider “A Momentary Lapse of Reason” as being a David Gilmour solo record, and in my view “The Final Cut” is vastly superior, and it didn’t need remixing.
So is "Animals" and "The Wall" are Waters' solo albums really.
Animals>The Wall>Momentary Lapse of Reason>Final Cut in my opinion.
@@vicinvesta8349 Comfortably Numb, Run Like Hell, and Young Lust are all co-written by David and they are the best songs on the album.
@@ChiefXuligan Gimme a break. David contributed to 3 songs. Awww..... So cute.
When you compare "The final Cut" to Water's real solo albums you can clearly hear, that it has only Floyd in the name, all the great influence of the other band members are missing (unfortunately) - no comparison to "Animals" or "The Wall"!

dude you are better than any rock journalist ever
Roger Waters sounds a lot like Donald Trump: In October 2016, Waters arrogantly announced:
"We are going to take a new show on the road. The content is very secret. It’ll be a mixture of stuff from my long career, stuff from my years with Pink Floyd, some new things. Probably 75% of it will be old material and 25% will be new, but it will be all connected by a general theme. It will be a cool show, I promise you. It’ll be spectacular, like all my shows have been."
Wow, that's better than Alec Baldwin.
No slot is etched in stone but this pretty much makes up my list.
Although they are considered as studio albums in their catalog, I don't consider "More" and "Obscured by Clouds" as such, just like Peter Gabriel's "Birdy" and "Passion" aren't considered as studio albums in his catalog. Those two albums are soundtracks, but nevermind. Here's my list:
1) The Dark Side of the Moon - arguably the greatest album in rock history
2) The Wall - one of the greatest conceptual albums and sheer grandiosity of the album is unreal (my favourite album of all time)
3) Wish You Were Here - Shine on & Wish You Were Here, what more to say, two of their greatest songs
4) Animals - very underrated album, doesn't get the recognition it deserves
5) Meddle - their classic period began with this one, they've found their sound with it, Echoes - what more to say
6) The Divison Bell - best post Waters album
7) The Final Cut - not as good as their previous 4 albums, if it was done more as a band project rather than a solo album by Waters, it could've been a masterpiece
8) The Piper at the Gates of Dawn - really a period piece, very psychedelic but very good as a debut album
9) Atom Heart Mother - aside from the horrible cover art, a very good album
10) Obsured by Clouds - underrated too, overshadowed by the release of Dark Side soon after, but it contains some of their best acoustic work
11) A Saucerful of Secrets - struggling to find a way without Barret, but it's got some good songs
12) A Momentary Lapse of Reason - very weak by PF standards, only "On the Turning Away" and "Sorrow" save this album from being bad, too much elevator music and ambient noodling
13) The Endless River - leftovers from AMLOR and TDB, tribute to Wright, nothing more
14) Ummagumma - it's saved by the live album, studio album is atrocious, some of the worst songs in their entire catalog is on this one (several species....)
15) More - they were really struggling in 1969 to find a direction, resulting in 2 very bad albums.
Monster Movie and Phallus Dei already made the one track for a whole side thing. Third came during the same year as well.
I probably wouldn't put it at number 2 but I also love AHM
Thank you.
Every time i listen to you i think "i would love to chat over a beer with this guy"
your description of Nick Mason's drumming made me think that the essence of Pink Floyd is that they were instrumentally 4 distinct and complementary "elements"

Mason - Langid
Waters - Ferocious
Gilmore - Ethereal
Atom heart mother is a masterpiece
Thanks -- I always appreciate your well thought out opinions. My #1 is The Final Cut (especially with the addition of "When The Tigers Broke Free"). Kurt Loder (Rolling Stone) gave it 5/5 stars (then followed that by giving "Pros and Cons..." 1 star). There is no disputing that it is, for all intents and purposes, a Roger Waters album.
“Lysergic Tourette’s… “ the language and writing is why I watch and listen intently!
Thank you
Fantastic ranking/reviews!
I agree.
Classic content as usual. Thanks Baz
Difficult to out Dark Side anywhere else but at number one, surely it’s in the top three, top five at the very least of albums made by anyone. Pop, classical, soul , jazz …… oh and rock !,
The wall is the best for me
Love the vocabulary you used to describe the albums.
Thank you
Nice to see Atom Heart Mother so high. That's where post-Barrett Floyd really found their feet imo.
Yeah!
this review is very well thought out. you earned a like and a subscriber!
Welcome aboard! If you enjoyed this video do share it and check out others on my channel

9. "A Saucerful of Secrets"
10. "Division Bells" (timed really badly for me)
11. "More"
12. "Obscured by Clouds"

Impressive
Absolutely agree on your pick as best Floyd album. And hard to disagree with it being the greatest album of all time. Great album. Great band. Great video. Cheers. More more more! 👍👏
Atom Heart Mother. Under appreciated by many but not by those in the know.

4. Wish you Were Here
3. Atom Heart Mother
2. Dark Side of the Moon
1. Animals
That's awesome!
You are right....but personally I prefer side two....side four is weak
I missed Pink Floyd at the time but now listen quite a lot. I enjoy it but they won't rank in my top bands, I see almost no musical progression between Meddle and Animals, yes the song writing gets better but the music pales next to the likes of King Crimson and Yes of the same time period. I think your ranking is pretty good.
Thanks
