    OMG Lindsay, you rock! I just got a set of Water MIxable oils for half price from Michaels because my little niece recommended them. I've never tried them so I looked for a tutorial and here you are. I swear, you are my favorite artist youtuber; there's nothing i want to learn that you haven't already done.

    I wasn't aware you were a vegetarian, too! My son makes fun of me, asking, "why do vegetarians always tell you they're vegetarians?" I tell him, "like religious zealots, we're trying to convert you!" lol! Have never used that type of brush, so that's a new one for me. I gave up oils years ago, but always love to see someone put them to such beautiful use. I really love the background you set down on this. A painting all on it's own! By the finish, this came out really lovely and full of tidbits to take away for use in other mediums, as well! Thank you and cheers! :)

      Thanks Mark, I didn't know you were a vegetarian too! I have followed a vegan diet for 23 years but I didn't throw away my brushes that were hog or sable just to buy synthetics that I would need to constantly replace. I hardly know any vegetarians in real life LOL:) The only ones around here seem to be 7th day adventists but I am not religious. They are nice folks tho:)

    I realized a funny thing today - that after a couple of years of regularly watching your channel I started to adopt your speech patterns and phrases and such into my own teaching (I'm a PhD candidate, so I teach undergrad and grad students, and I'm not a native English speaker but that's the language I use for work so I tend to pick stuff up here and there.) It was an amusing thought on an otherwise dreary Monday, so I guess what I'm saying is thank you for being a teaching inspiration :)

    • @mjpete27
      @mjpete27 2 роки тому +1

      If you follow the fat over lean rules of oil painting you can do layer after layer! Even if you wait months between layers!
      So an oil paint is “fatter” the more you work from the tube of paint. To add layers after the paint only layer you need to add oil to the paint. You can use many different mediums. I might suggest the Chelsea Lavender oil substitute mediums they even have a FAT and LEAN bottle of mediums! They are also non toxic products as they have no petroleum and are all natural, made from lavender! Good luck!

    Hullo Lindsay, I was excited to find a water soluble oil painting from you! I have done exactly 1 oil painting since college. I only did that one because the lady who commissioned it the portrait believed that it was not a true portrait unless it was done with oils! I was so sick from the fumes. I did finish, but I gave all my oil painting supplies away to my friend who worked only in oil’s! I did try odorless mineral spirits but those still outgas so I simply quit using oil paints. I just purchased Robin Sealark’s new book “Oil Painting Everyday “ I am supporting her and thought I might just give water miscible oil paints a try!
    I am wondering if the Chelsea Lavender products will work with these oil paints, they are supposed to be non toxic from the spike oil to the clarified linseed oil to the fat and lean mediums. You have said that you don’t use mediums, have you ever considered trying the Chelsea mediums and cleaners? I am willing to bet Jerry’s would supply you with the Chelsea sample set for demonstration on your channel! I have searched and searched and have NOT found anything that addresses this question. Will Chelsea Lavender products work with water soluble/miscible oil paints? I have sent my question into Jerry’s and a couple other sources, yet I believe that you have a certain level of honesty that is respected by even people that are not subscribed to your channel! I hope you consider doing a review with the Chelsea products and water soluble oil paints. Oh I am in no way affiliated with any company or individual that produces any of these products, just in case you were suspicious about my intentions. I am just an old artist who is enjoying watching videos of incredible people creating art for themselves! And finding out a few new to me techniques as well! If you dedicate your life to an Art journey you never truly stop learning!

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  2 роки тому +2

      I use the lavender brush cleaner from chelsea and it is strong smelling. I wouldn't recommend it if you are sensitive to OMS. Do you have watersoluble oils? You don't need a brush cleaner other than soap and water. I also have the chrasea sample set but haven't used it much as I rarely use mediums so i am afraid I would not be knowable enough to give a good review. I typically use a bit if gamsol if I need to thin a lower layer and linseed oil if I am adding layers. I've used Winsor & Newton, Lukas, m graham and Chelsea and I really don't notice a difference. I dint think im very picky with oils. Im picky with watercolor and pencils 😆
      As for using traditional oil mediums with watermixable oils it doesn't always work. I wanted to speed drying of my wstermixable oils and tried gamblin solvent free gel and it turned my paint into a gummy mess. Even when traditional mediums work fine it diminishes the soap and water clean up of the paint. I'd recommend a mefium meant to be used with the watermixable paint preferably from the same brand.

    Lindsey, why is the 'bright' brush named that?

      Because they are short hairs and make sharp. Bright strokes i guess

    Do you coat
    the dry finished painting with a coating of some type to protect it?

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  2 роки тому +1

      You should varnish it 6 months after it seems dry

    would you be able to paint this in acrylic and still have it as lovely as oils?

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  6 років тому

      sure, use what you like. You might want some slow dry medium to have more blending time tho

    Hi there. I was wondering if you could help me with a problem I have found with water mixable oils. I have painted with oils for some years and decided to give water mixable a go. I used W&N Brand. The problem I have is that they take a long time to dry and even worse they are STICKY when dry. Could you tell me if it’s something I am doing or the brand. Thank you in advance. 🌹

      It's that brand. It's the worst I've used. They were the first I tried too.

    Lindsay, one of the problems I have with paintings like this one is getting the initial proportions for the bouquet of flowers to the vase. should they be equal heights or the flowers twice the height of the vase? This a lovely painting!

      +Brenda Collins Deeks their is no rule:) all compositions are different. Try different ways:)

    I would like to try these if these oils don't have the fumes working with traditional oils have. Maybe because of the solvents?

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  6 років тому

      +annette fournier yes, it is the solvents that smell bad. These have a very faint pleasant odor. Very similar to any oil paint but no stinky paint thinner.

    Can you save leftover paints on the pallet and either freeze like oils or spray with water like watercolor?

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  6 років тому

      I am not a big fan of the freeing oils trick, better to take less than you need I think. They will stay wet on your palette for a day or two though.

    Can you use a hair dryer on this to semi-dry one layer before adding another?

      Maire Millard A hair dryer won't work on oil paints, so no.

    Thank you so much for this video! I’ve been wanting to try oils for a long time but I’ve been afraid of the solvents. I’ve been shopping for cheaper oil brushes, do you have any other reccomendations? I notice you use so many more brushes vs watercolor which I normally paint with. Thanks again so much!

      +Nicole Bertuglia I do because it is hard to get them really clean while painting. I loving the mimik hog brushes. I have the big set buy they have a value set that us around $17 for around 12 brushes I think. You don't have to have as many as I do, you just might need to stop and clean them more:)

    wierds question- do you think about how every brush stroke is going to lie on the paper/ canvas? Or is it any over all look without worrying about the minutiae?

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  6 років тому +1

      I do, I want to strokes to go in the same direction of what I am painting, think fur on a dog, you would m=want to brush strokes to go in the direction of the fur.

    Hi Lindsey wonderful painting! have you had any issues with the paint drying too quickly on the palette? OR does it stay wet after say, a few hours?

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  4 роки тому

      No issues, as far as workability these are the same as traditional oils.

    Love this!! Thank you!! I am going to give it a try- I am going to buy some of these products because I've been wanting to try them, but I wish that something I wanted would qualify for the discounts - any suggestions of best products for the coupon?

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  6 років тому +1

      +encouraginghope that is frustrating. Usually they allow the coupons on their house brands like creative mark and Lukas unless they are on super sale. I've used the reeves eater mixable oils and they are quite good (and cheap) and permabella is nice too.

      Thank you so much! I think they Lukas are on super sale...Would you consider doing plein air oil tutorials when it starts warming up in the Spring or Summer? I can't wait to give this painting a try. Was it hard to learn how to do the back of the peony what i mean is when the peony in the back that is facing away? You have a REALLY lovely peony watercolor painting in the background of your tutorials. I wish I could do this. I really struggle with the gradation in colors from light to dark in roses and peonies especially in watercolor. I've been painting for 3 years now and it's something I want to be able to work on and do confidently this year. Any tips? I've taken both of your classes and completed the first one but not the second yet. Thanks for all you do!! You were my first watercolor teacher and I'm grateful to you!!!

    Bummer, the coupon wont apply to the lukas paint nor the hog brushes. Sad
