    hi, one of students caught your video and asked me about underpainting in oil and water.
    I have been using water based oil since the early 90's when I demoed max oil for grumbacher.
    I have used your technique in the past but frankly I find it much more advantageous to underpaint [ like you do] but with acrylic, it actually gives you more range before applying the oil for me anyway.
    I also would draw your attention to diox purple, quin orange as colours with a lot more range.
    Lastly if you add a drop of japan drier to your mix it will tack up even faster and lastly stand oil works very well with artisan as well.
    nice job , bye the way
    P

    • @GebahiArtworks
      @GebahiArtworks  5 років тому +3

      Paul Ross Sandilands thank you Paul! Your correct about the underpainting, the reason I didn’t do it was due to time , I didn’t want to make it too long. Although I have done it in the past for myself and finished the painting in oils! I wanted to try and do the painting alla prima so that they can see the result, but I ended up by adding more later when the painting was dry, Lol! But I believe they got the point. I actually reverted back to traditional oils and using Gamsol and Galkyd for my painting mediums in addition to stand oil, and so far the tacking up is happening at a good pace for me. But I did like the Cobra water mixable, it’s my favorite at this point! Thank you as well for the compliment!!

    • @chriswhitehouse8982
      @chriswhitehouse8982 4 роки тому +1

      So, are you saying that you are now no longer using WMO, but have switched back to traditional oils? If so, what's the reason?

    • @GebahiArtworks
      @GebahiArtworks  4 роки тому +2

      Chris W yes, I’ve reverted back to traditional oils because I’ve had few problems with drying times! Also I’ve problems with paintings feeling sticky/tacky for a prolonge time. I can’t figure it out and it drove crazy. And it’s not on all the paintings, just some! But Cobra claims you can use just water as the medium. But because of the inconsistency I kind of shied away. I may give it another try because they were convient. Now I use Gamblin Gamsol and Galkyd mediums to with my traditional oils, and things have been consistent!

    Thank you for your reply. I have now the issue with redoing my painting. I painted using thinner and linseed oil, made mistake and decided to redo after 4 days. So, I remove part of the painting by palette knife and towel paper and tried to repaint, using Linseed oil, but some spots I can't cover, (can't put new color, except black or umra, which is not suitable.). Maybe I should use again Thinner, like from the beginning? Is it possible to redo in case of mistake after 4-7 days, or it will be crap by default? I am doing slow, need some time... what should I do? Thank you! Alla.

      Hi Alla, only 2 things I can suggest at this point, 1) use some mineral spirits on a napkin, rag, or anything and try to rub it out. Or 2) take 180 grit sandpaper and remove the parts you don’t like! I’ve done that before and just repainted over it again.

    Thank you for this outstanding video on painting with water soluble oils. It is detailed and very helpful. I know I'm showing my ignorance, but exactly how did you add the linseed oil to your pigments and how much of it? Did you use a dropper and add it to each pile of pigment, did you use a cup and dip the tip of your brush in the oil, etc? How much? I paint with Daniel Smith brand and Cobra, and I'm doing something wrong once I start using any oil because sometimes the paint becomes incredibly tacky and other times the brush makes the paint lift right off the canvas. Any help or info you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

    • @GebahiArtworks
      @GebahiArtworks  Рік тому

      Thank you Elizabeth, the struggle is real!! When I use water mixable linseed oil or traditional linseed oil, I dip my brush in the oil first just a little, not too much, and then I pick up paint and mix them together! As for the paint lifting, it’s most likely two things, either you’re mixing too much oil, and or , pressing a little too hard on your brush! Start with a thin layer and then go with a thicker layer on top. Or you placed too thick of a layer initially and that’s why your paint is sliding around! Either you let it sit and dry a little or you can scrap off the excess paint. When it’s tacky, it’s in a drying stage with traditional oils, but with water mixable, it’s usually because there was too much water still on the brush and it’s not evaporating quick enough and it will be that way for a while sadly! That’s the downfall with water mixable oils. I’ve learned to handle it better now but there’s a learning curve! In your situation , I’d let the first layer dry before adding additional layers. Use a water mixable thinner with you paint for your first layer and let it dry and then use a little water mixable linseed oil with your paint for you subsequent layers! I hope this helps! I may do another water mixable oils tutorial soon!

You can mix it 50/50 or 30/70 (30% Linseed or Stand oil to 70% thinner). The 30/70 mixture is for faster drying. Remember, more oil, slower drying time! And no I don’t use a drying medium, just the thinner. W&N sells their pre-mixed painting medium if you want so that you don’t have to do all that, Lol !! Christine Tite hi, I used a 1/4inch Birchwood panel which I cut down to suze! Then I triple prime the panel, 3 coats on the painting surface and one coat in the back to prevent from warping! Primer is a personal preference, some use gesso, which is a minimum of 3 coats! I prefer using Kilz2 water based sealer/primer from the big box stores, in my opinion it seals better and has better adhesion properties, even if you use oils!

      Hi again Artworks....is the prime on your panel white (same as gesso?). sometimes I find gesso so rough I need to sand quite severely, does this occur with your Kilz sealer/primer too. Thank you for your time and I look forward to hearing from you. warmest regards

      Christine Tite hello Christine, I personally use Kilz2 for my sealer/primer, I don’t find it to be as gritty as gesso, and sometimes I just give a “light” sanding. If sometimes I use gesso if I’m recycling a panel on the fly. If you find that Kilz2 is a little thick, you can dilute it just a little and give your panel a smoother finish, but don’t dilute too much!

      Thank you Artworks! Very helpful information, I'm swinging over to water mixable oils and you take the time to explain your process. Many thanks.... (smile) regards

    W&N - WMO was not very good - it was the prime cause for "sticky"

      Eugene Rizzo so are you saying that it was the linseed oil from Windsor & Newton WMO that was causing the tackiness? I have Cobra as well, will try with WMO thinner and see!

      @@GebahiArtworks Yes, Winsor/Newton WMO linseed oil was my problem. Go to the Wet Canvas site and look up W/N Artisan linseed oil. Lots of folks who were using it also had the same problem. I have no extraneous tacky problems with using Holbein Duo Aqua Painting Oil Medium with either Holbein Duo Aqua or Cobra WMOs. Acrylics has a few drawbacks as well, the worst of which for me is they dry so quickly when trying to paint En Plein Air. In my studio, I use Golden OPEN acrylics and like them a lot, especially when using OPEN Thinner and Acrylic Medium - not using water except to clean brushes. I find the color saturation to be good. Anyway, your work is outstanding and I appreciate the information you share. Be safe.

      Eugene Rizzo thank you Eugene!! I’ll leave out the Linseed oil next time and test it out. The open acrylics are great but not as heavily pigmented as the heavy body acrylics, I noticed it when doing my darks and I use the same recipe all the time!

    At first sight it is a boring painting. The sky has no energy, neither have the sea nor the beach. No people or animal on the beach to use as a focus and suggestion of the distance. The foreground is overpainted. Still there is a lot of appeal. Compliments
