I’m just learning to use oils, starting with water mixable ones. Why did you put the linseed oil over your base colors of the red and the black trees? Is that because the linseed oil should not be put directly on the canvas. Can you finish your painting with an oil varnish or does it have to be a water mixable oil varnish? And lastly, I want to do some paintings on brushed aluminum. What would I prime that with? Thank you.
@@wiffor1 I put the linseed oil so that the paints slide on easily… otherwise it is like painting brush…I use Krylon’s Kamar spray varnish. I would use gesso to prime the aluminum… I’m pretty sure u can get a clear gesso if you want the aluminum to show through👍

Here's his response to a similar question asked further down in the comments -- Hi Lorrie... it depends on the paints you are using , how thickly they are applied and whether or not you are using any mediums with the paints. Some colours (reds especially) take forever to dry, while some colours dry very quickly. Thick paint takes longer to cure... and some mediums (impasto medium) can drastically speed up drying time. The main thing is to make sure the paint has fully cured and dried all the way through before varnishing. You can do a touch test to determine whether or not the paint has cured. Areas of thick paint should feel firm and not soft and squishy... if in doubt you are better to give the painting a little more time before varnishing😊👍
What do you use to varnish water mixable oils? Also, does the varnish matter if you use acrylics before the WMO? Do you need an isolation coat before using the oils? Thanks for your help😊
I use the spray on Kamar Varnish by Krylon. just make sure to follow the instructions on the can and make sure to invert the can and spray to clear the nozzle after each use. :)
Such a beautiful painting- the pop of colors--wow! Can I ask if there is time elapsed in this painting? Meaning, do you wait for anything paint to dry before going to the next stage or was this painting done in one sitting? Thanks so much for sharing so much with us.
⁉️❓❓❓Can you paint acrylic over water mixable oil paint? I have an old painting that I never finished that it was with this type of oil paint. I’d like and preferred to paint over it with acrylic and finish the painting. I have used an acrylic varnish over the entire painting as an acrylic surface.. is this possible?
Hi I am confused if you have to finish the painting in one day or can you continue the next day or a few days later with this method? Does the painting have to be touch dry to paint more layers ? And do you have to follow fat over lean rule ? Thanks
you can work on the painting over multiple days. Because we are just applying the thin coat of oil to the canvas as the first step and are not using the oil medium any more during the process... you don't need to worry about the fat over lean rule. and I paint wet into wet paint layers
How economic is water-soluble oil vs acrylic, especially for a beginner? How long does it take to dry? Also, can you just paint over the oil with gesso if you don't like the painting?
It can be much more economical because the paints stay workable much longer... days even weeks if you use a standard wet palette. I would not re coat them with gesso... I',m not sure how good the adhesion would be
Tim How long should I wait to varnish my painting. I read that water soluble oil dries in 3-5 days but then I read you should wait 6 months til you varnish… what is your method?
Hi Lorrie... it depends on the paints you are using , how thickly they are applied and whether or not you are using any mediums with the paints. Some colours (reds especially) take forever to dry, while some colours dry very quickly. Thick paint takes longer to cure... and some mediums (impasto medium) can drastically speed up drying time. Thank you, very useful tips. Question: why do you apply the oil layer to the underpainting? To improve the paint flow? I started oil painting with Cobra oils, but can‘t figure out the proper consistency where the paint still has enough covering strength but it is flowing like in the UA-cam tutorials :-) I also have some tubes of Artisan but they are even stickier than the Cobras directly from the tube.
Thanks for this instruction using the water soluble oils - how long did you let your base coated canvas dry before you put on the layer of clear medium?
That sun was so bright and well done it literally hurt my eyes and I say that as a compliment LOL

Thank you!@@timpackerfinearts

Such a beautiful painting- the pop of colors--wow! Can I ask if there is time elapsed in this painting? Meaning, do you wait for anything paint to dry before going to the next stage or was this painting done in one sitting? Thanks so much for sharing so much with us.
This about 3 sittings… but only because of the delays caused by filming. Usually that size would be all in one sitting for me 😊👍
⁉️❓❓❓Can you paint acrylic over water mixable oil paint? I have an old painting that I never finished that it was with this type of oil paint. I’d like and preferred to paint over it with acrylic and finish the painting. I have used an acrylic varnish over the entire painting as an acrylic surface.. is this possible?
No... you shouldn't put acrylic over oil... it will not adhere properly
@@timpackerfinearts thank you for answering 😀 this is a great painting method.

The main thing is to make sure the paint has fully cured and dried all the way through before varnishing. You can do a touch test to determine whether or not the paint has cured. Areas of thick paint should feel firm and not soft and squishy... if in doubt you are better to give the painting a little more time before varnishing😊👍

Thank you, very useful tips. Question: why do you apply the oil layer to the underpainting? To improve the paint flow? I started oil painting with Cobra oils, but can‘t figure out the proper consistency where the paint still has enough covering strength but it is flowing like in the UA-cam tutorials :-) I also have some tubes of Artisan but they are even stickier than the Cobras directly from the tube.
the oil allows the paint to slide on more easily...otherwise it is more like painting in dry brush
I use them.no problems🎃
Thanks for this instruction using the water soluble oils - how long did you let your base coated canvas dry before you put on the layer of clear medium?
You need to wait until it is totally dry. That’s why I use fluid acrylics to tone the canvas and block in the composition. They dry much faster.😊👍
Can we use gamblin galkyd for water mixable oils ?
I think you can... but the resultant mixture might not be water soluble🤔
