Hi, I am the son of two artists and began painting in my hometown of Richmond, Virginia before I could walk. I was a rare combination of artist and athlete so I moved to Los Angeles in 2008 to play football for USC. I left the team my sophomore year to focus on painting and filmmaking, applying the same focus and discipline from my football career to my art. I primarily work in oils, and spend most free days painting "en plein air" in my new home of Sarasota Florida.

I’ve been using water mixable oils and I noticed you had not mentioned the one thing that I use, instead of just water - water mixable linseed oil! It’s an invention genius. I use it for all painting in oils, it washes in soap and water and works with regular oil paint as well.

On brush cleaner homemade, I found video that used cheap vegetable oil 1/2 and half mix with water and a spoon full of dish soap. This really worked. I followed with more soap to get the oily feel off of it. It seemed to clean wood pallet ok too. I also saw someone using Murphy's Oil Soap. This seemed to work on cheap oils that I was playing with. I would think a layer of paint thinner and letting it sit till it bubbles up the paint and scraping would save a good wood pallet. It works on removing paint from old kitchen cabinets. Love the videos! Thank you for sharing!

DrawMixPaint is by Mark Carder. The paint he makes himself is Geneva Fine Artists Paint, and the medium is mixed in with the paint. It's not toxic to work around, but always ensure that any rags or paper towels used are disposed of after your painting session, outdoors, away from the house or garage, outside, in a safe disposal container until trash day when you throw them out. This is because oils and oil soaked rags/paper towels can self-combust and cause a fire. It's wonderful paint, I did get a set myself. I love it.

I've heard varying opinions about water mixable oils. I've heard some say oils and additives are still required. I've heard others say no oils or additives are needed. That they can paint an entire painting with just water. I've also heard you need to use water mixable mediums, which pretty much defeats the entire purpose for me. Which is it? I've never used any solvents. I've always just used oil and gas to clean. A hint at my age. Back in my day I didn't learn with all that stuff. We were given paint, an oil and gasoline to clean. That's it. We didn't learn with all these quick dry additives etc. I had to give up oil painting over a decade ago because of age. I just don't have it in me anymore to me with it all. If I buy water mixable oils and they only require water then I could get back in action. Which would be great. So I eagerly await your reply.

I've been using watermixables and I love how hassle free the after care "washing the brushes" is. I have no space on my own.. I've been painting in a room shared with my cousin and she never complained anything about the smell. For a person with limited space, money, but wants to experience oderless and toxic free oil painting I say watermixables are heaven sent.

    Good video Chris.
My answer on drawing. I took only drawing classes my first year. I then did monochrome only for a year. I do not draw daily and as a result my painting are good not great. I could talk for hours on it but a short story:
My first drawing class was with a guy today who is considered to be one of best if not best American portrait painter. He was 23 then and could barely talk but he was a drawing machine. All he did all day was draw.
Grids, the divider help but you’ll never be great . So it really all comes down to why your painting and how good do you want to be . I can correct my drawing as I proceed through underpainting and doing the actual painting , glazing etc but it all goes back to the accuracy of my drawing.

To make a photo larger, you can crop it into smaller equal sections and print out the sections larger, line up the print outs and tape the front, rub graphite on back of the paper and tape it to your canvas' use a pen and trace your picture to transfer it to the canvas. Take off your picture and you'll have a outline

  • @meccamw
    @meccamw 2 роки тому +1

Another way to transfer your drawing is to cover the back of the paper you printed the drawing on with graphite or charcoal. Put this paper on your canvas with the graphite/charcoal side down and then trace the drawing and the graphite/charcoal will transfer onto the canvas.

I recently played around with Cobra water-mixable oils. I also got some water-mixable thinner and medium. Using the thinner didn't work very well for me. And the medium, you are supposed to be able to add water to thin the medium, but when I added water, it turned milky white and you could see some water-oil separation...not good. I haven't tried the medium straight yet (without adding water). What did actually work great was when I tried just wetting my brush with a little Gamsol to use to thin the paint. The painted seemed to cover the canvas very well and I was still able to wash my brushes with just soap and water.

pertaining to the first question asked about transferring an image from a photo onto a larger canvas there is this tool I've seen advertised that is called "Lucy" it purportedly a modern version of a tool used by some of the great painters of the past. Its basically some kind of combination of lenses put together in a compartment that is placed atop of a long adjustable arm. You look through the eye piece and aim it at the subject you intend on drawing and it somehow reflects the image onto whatever you want to draw it on. It makes the image see through. It looks very very handy for those that need to transfer drawings quicker either because of time constraints but it also seems like it definitely will aid in helping anyone get better at drawing. Please look it up its called a "Lucy"

I told him it was because he's doing his painting in a small trailer that he lives in, that that was why he was getting these symptoms. That was it. Several weeks ago I was sorting out my brushes and came across seven that had stiff bristles. I could have kicked myself for letting them get into this condition. I had watched a video the day before on how to restore and clean paint brushes. I poured some Murphy's Oil Soap into an empty jar, added a little bit of water not too much then soaked my brushes overnight. I kid you not, the next day the brushes were good as new. I am a skeptic about a lot of things and I actually didn't think this soap would work but it did. I didn't have to work the bristles very much but I did squeeze them gently while I was rinsing them.
This oil soap is now my 'go to' if I need to clean a brush that I have forgotten about.

For blowing up an image you can also use a grafitti artists method (can't remember the name of it, sorry), where you put a bunch of random but seperate marks on your canvas. Then take a photo of your complete canvas. You can then overlay the reference photo with the photo of your canvas. By adjusting the opacity of the layers, you can figure out where certain features of the reference fit in relation to the marks on the canvas. You'd need an app that allows for this (for mobile phones, I like Snapseed). This method is also great for checking your painting with your reference later on, if you feel there is something (completely) 'off' but can't put your finger on it. I have to admit falling back to this when trying portraits... [oops].

Another method for transferring an image would be to trace the image with tracing paper. Then you place a sheet of graphite paper underneath and just trace over your previously traced image onto your desired surface. It works well for up to 8.5 by 11. Anything larger can be a pain.

While learning to draw will be very helpful in the long run, you can transfer your artwork by having the original blown up to the size you want at a local Staples or copy shop and then use transfer paper to draw the original onto your paper or canvas. One note about transferring to canvas that is stretched onto a frame (rather than the canvas sheets) - you need to support the canvas as you press down on it to draw the image. Placing books behind the canvas can be one way to do this. There are plenty of videos about this process online.

FYI, I found Cobra products to be the most painterly - many other brands get ropy and sticky when you thin with just water - Cobra does not! I use their Quick Dry Medium in the early wash and block-in stages. Hope that helps!

It sounds like your canvas is very absorbent, or your maybe your paints are too watery and therefore easily absorbed. I used to like an absorbent undercoat when I used traditional oils and solvents, as the first layers of oils would get absorbed to an extent, drying faster in the process, enabling me to work faster in the beginning. But you could also rub a turps/linseed mix into such an undercoat to saturate it and prevent absorption of the first thin layers.

Draw Mix Paint, Mark Carder owns Geneva Paints, and his paint has many different things pre-mixed into his paints. Some are straight linseed oils, but earth tones dry faster and he has formulated them to dry slower than they normally do. All in all, his paint is designed to ALL dry at the same rate, so as to give the artist full advantage of the slow dry times of oils in general. I personally have not used them, and do not think I would like them... I try to speed up my dry times, and also like that I can mix my mediums for effects, impasto or glaze... the Geneva would make that really hard to pull off... another "quality" is Geneva paints ""self level" and glass over leaving no or little brush strokes. The paints are designed for Mark Carde's preferences- and that's absolutely what I'd do if I owned a paint company!

Also, while he paints everything, Mr. Carder seems to predominately be a portrait painter. Self leveling paint or little to no brush stroke paint is a big plus with some portrait painters. But I am sure impasto medium could help for other thicker styles.

Did'nt know that about Geneva paints. Do not think I would like them either then. but it does sound like an amazing, specialized product.

Could you use water mix able oils more like using water colour paints

    • @kazfarndon4990

No. I have thoroughly researched this and found out if you use too much water to thin the paint like a watercolour wash, the molecules of paint will not bond together sufficiently.

I’ve just started using WMO since I can’t use regular oil paint. I use water only to put in my first block in and of course to clean brushes. After that I use a water mixable medium to finish .
I’ve heard of a product by Schmineke , that lets you use regular oil paint and you can clean up with water. (So they say) . I’m going to try it out, but was wondering if you’ve heard anything about it. It’s called W, and is available on Amazon. Tallahassee, Florida

Try RAPID RESIZER software. You can upload an image and resize then to any size and then print out on printer paper A4, then join all the pieces together.

Gojo is good for cleaning the brush..a master copy helped me how to highlight. for painting the glasses I copy the master. i copy Renoir for the modest dress and colors. retouch varnish. no use spray can! water mixable paint is good. use water for medium.

I know they are called water mixable oils. You are only meant to clean up water not mix it, go figure. You can get water mixable medium.

How to you transfer to a canvas or paper from a screen image, photo, still life or landscape and be very accurate!! That problem had been solved a century or more ago and was used by botanist, archeologist, Entomologists, Herpetologists, zoologists, etc.
They used the Licida projection or camera which today can get as a phone app. Basically the source of the image wanted is shown transparent in front of the canvas or paper. The person looks at the canvas through the image from a fixed point. The pencil held by the person is use to trace the transparent image on to the canvas or paper. Even artist have use this device. Obvious a large image on the canvas requires a long reach.
The approach is great for these scientist trying to put the thing they are looking at on to the page of their records, a small image.
Not very great for artist trying to make a life or larger sketch. I assume a program maybe available that a camera on a tripod represents the person looking through the transparency. A notebook computer image shows the camera view with zooming to the artist with the pencil tracing it. He can see the pencil in the notebook image.
