Here we discuss the minimal steps we need to do to prep our centipede lawn for winter. Also we go over the negative effects of pre-emergent (root pruning) on centipede.

I would love a Google calendar schedule with what products/dates you are applying for your centipede yard.
Thanks for the suggestion! Appreciate you watching.
Very helpful. I'm in the process of buying a home with an established Centipede lawn. Whoever maintained it knew what he was doing; it's thick and darker green than average. I like your idea of skipping the spring pre-emergent app and relying of a fall app to block spring weeds. Sounds like a good plan for an established, healthy lawn. Thanks!
Thanks, yes I’m just very cautious when using pre emergents on the Centipede because I did some major damage in 2019. The centipede looked terrible and didn’t fill in at all and it even caused some bare spots I think. I may do an app in fall and a light app in Jan so by the time it wears off the centipede can thrive and fill-in in the spring.
@@CentipedeCentralLawnCare Makes sense. If I understand it right, a light dose of Prodiamine will wear out sooner than a heavy dose. So maybe the best approach is to calculate the date we want the PE barrier to break down (just before Centipede starts to grow) and work backward.
My wife and I spent the morning plugging some Stolens From Fridays weed eater cut!
They were growing over the concrete and asphalt drives! I hate to waste them! This grass loves Heat!
We just use a 10" spike and a small hammer to open a mostly horizontal hole in the Georgia clay and slip them in , followed with a light foot pat!
I Like your advice, I have learned this and from multiple sources!
Centipede is so thick and Lucius when done right., It even chokes out the Bermuda!
It grows low and slow and when done correctly done it is as thick as shag Carpet! Mowing once every 2-3 weeks in the right circumstances really puts smile on ones face!
Awesome, thanks for sharing. Never tried that before but that’s great it works!
Great advice 👍 I started watching your channel a few months. Unfortunately it was after hearing about using pre emergent in the spring and seeing the effects. I didn't know what type of sod was laid last year ( long story short, it was not bermuda)and observed what happens when the yard crew come and cut it. So I chose to take care of the issue myself by telling hubby to stop them from cutting it low and not at all when spring comes to help it come back. So I'll keep watching now to catch up on all of your tips and some research and will let you know how well spring 2022 will be 🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞
Thanks for watching! I look forward to hearing your progress!
My lawn is a mix of St. Augustine, Centipede, crabgrass, carpet grass and an unknown grass.maybe Bermuda.my question is should I use pre emergent on the non centipede grass and not on the centipede and spot spray to kill crabgrass.
If you can avoid the centipede with the pre-emergent that is a good thing and yes Celsius is good to spot spray crabgrass while being safe on centipede. Works best in the growing season
Been watching your helpful videos .. thanks for all the great content... of all the fertilizer that you have tried.. which is your preferred? I noticed that the Espoma that was out of stock is once again available.. so which is your fav of all you have tried? Thanks
Thanks for watching and the comment! Yeah I tend to really like the hybrid synthetic/organic products that have a combo of good base ingredients but also use the newer technology of slow release N. I would say the Espoma 15-0-5 and the Sta Green 16-0-10 I have done a couple videos on are both excellent.
Thank you so much! I really have learned a lot from your videos!@@CentipedeCentralLawnCare
So you’re basically just doing a fall pre emergent app (if that) to help suppress winter weeds, post emergents for anything that does come up through summer and then just feeding centipede for the rest of the year? I purchased a house 2 years ago and we’re going into fall now. My yard is basically 30% centipede and 70% weeds. The centipede grows and crawls all over my concrete but I don’t see many runners in the yard lol. I’ve got st Augustine here and there too that I’ll probably just ignore for the most part. I want to focus on getting more centipede than weeds for the next couple seasons. All I’ve done for the last 2 years is mow often at about 2 inches and water it when I get the chance. Idk how to get the scales to tip in grass dominating weeds instead of what I have now
If you aren’t already, bag mow each time to help alleviate some of the weed pressure and seeds spreading. Also for heavily infested lawns w weeds you may want to try the Fertilome 15-0-15 Centipede Weed & Feed. I typically don’t do weed and feeds but for a lawn that is mostly weeds you may want to consider an app of this in May.
Thanks for the info, I have been bagging. It helped a lot for the first year but seems to have leveled out. Still going to bag though, I know it can’t hurt. Would you be opposed to doing the fertilome app before winter? I was just about to go pick up the sunniland formula to do the fall weed and feed but you and others may have swayed my mind on that
It’s too late to feed Nitrogen to centipede this time of year unless you are in southern FL where it never gets cold. Otherwise just wait til April-May. The Fertilome Weed Free zone is a good post emergent in cooler temps
Roger that, thanks bud! Im subscribed and appreciate the content
I had apply 5-1 weed and feed to my centipede grass before I read the direction . Centerpede grass wasn't in the list of grass to use on its list. Do you know what will happen ? Will it kill my lawn . What can I do to treat it .
Yeah those types of products are pretty harsh on centipede but as long as you didn’t go too much on it, it should be fine. Just don’t apply it anymore going forward
Does centipede grass root well on sand? It looks like that is what my homebuilder used when laying the sod instead of topsoil.
It may do ok but I would try to incorporate some organic matter either by granular Humic acid or topdressing with some good compost or soil.
Hi I'm a first time yard owner and I don't know much. What is the best care for a beginner owner. And what should I do keep my grass green during winter coming. I am in the lower Alabama area.
Hi Sarai, I believe in South Alabama you will still get a dormant period coming soon so the grass will just shut down, stop growing and turn to a hazy yellow color which is normal. If you have centipede I would just not fertilize and wait til May next year (see my fertilize video)...for now just keep your lawn free of debris and heavy leaf cover and keep mowing until it stops growing for the winter. The only way to keep it green in winter would be to overseed with ryegrass but I don’t recommend that for centipede.
@@CentipedeCentralLawnCare Thank you for your response. Another question how high should I keep my grass. And how many times a week should I water the grass now thats colder days. Does it matter what type of mower I use to cut my grass.
For centipede keep it around 2 inches. As long as the grass gets about 1 inch a week either via rain or sprinkler... I don’t worry about this rule as much in the fall/winter cold months. I never really water with sprinkler in fall/winter. I let Mother Nature take care of it. A standard push or reel mower works great
See my vid on cutting height
SE NC here, I have centipede grass but have a ton of Spurge. Any recommendations on a product I could apply to it this fall?
If you still have spurge you can either let the cold weather coming in eventually kill it or apply Fertilome Weed Free Zone. It works great in cooler temps. There is a link to the product in the description of my videos.
Thanks, you are awesome
I applied Fertilome and didn't see much results. I went to all the heavy spots and raked them out and got the weed to kinda stand up off the ground. Sprayed a 2nd time. This made a difference. I took the mower and cut it again trying to remove as much dead weed as possible. Today I am seeing new grass blades starting to pop out in the areas that once had the heavy weed presence. Tonight, we have a freeze warning. first freeze of this fall. What are your thoughts on taking a stiff metal rake and trying to rake out any dead grass or weeds? Thanks for your help.
That’s a little risky in the cold temps. Usually when you have to do some rough work it’s best to do it in the growing season so it will recover quickly
