Centipede doesn’t like high doses of nitrogen. It loves Iron (Fe) and other micronutrients as well as Potassium (K). #lawncare #centipedegrass #howtofertilize #fertilizer #winterizer #fertilize #lawn

What do recommend for taking care of weeds? I have centipede grass. I’m going to pick up 15-0-15.
Take a look at the links in the description. I love Fertilome Weed Free Zone, Celsius for broadleaf weeds
On your recommendation I put down Sta-Green 25-lb 5000-sq ft 16-0-10 Natural All-purpose Fertilizer in late April 2023 when lawn was fully green (spreader set on 3 1/2). Is it okay now to put down Ironite 1-0-0 on my lawn? Thanks, you been my go-to guy on taking care of my centipede lawn here in Mobile, Al.
Yes, Ironite would be good. Thanks for watching
Gm I lesson to channel I'm learning about my centipedes grass thanks for your words just want to know when is good to put down Iron on the grass
Any time during the growing season, but you could apply every 4-6 weeks or just once or twice a season, it’s up to you
Good explanation. Thank you. Mine is struggling in Alabama
Can I put ironite and 15-0-15 out at same time in May and water in?
Yes that should be fine. Aim for 3 lbs of product per 1000 so that would be .45lb N per 1000.
Which push spreader do you use? Thanks…
I have a Scott’s Mini with Edgeguard and it does a decent job but I think I’m going to upgrade next spring to something a little larger. Thanks
Good morning is there any type of centipede grass seed that you would recommend putting down four spots that are bad in my yard
I’ve heard good things about Tifblair centipede seed. I haven’t tried it myself but I may on some weak areas this year.
@@CentipedeCentralLawnCare thank you so much 😊
Man...Your vids are awesome and help out a lot with my centipede grass!
Had soil testing by Clemson and report says i need 1lb/1000sf of 0-46-0 triple super phosphate. Phosphate is in the low range on report.
Centipede in Charleston SC
Wow that’s quite a lot of Phosphorus it is recommending. I don’t think I would put that much down but maybe you could fertilize with a number in the 5-10 range to gradually bring it up. Those soil tests can be generalized and not really take the needs of centipede into consideration.
Thank you for a centipede channel. Is milorhanite a good pre emergent? If not what is best?
Milorganite is actually a fertilizer which I don’t recommend for Centipede because of its high Phosphorus content. You can’t go wrong with a 0-0-7 pre emergent from Lowe’s or HD, but I really like the Hi Yield Weed and Grass Stopper. I did a video last year called Prevent Fall and Winter Weeds you may want to check out. Thanks for watching.
I've started a couple spots of new lawn using centipede seed. On the bag of seed it recommends using a starter fertilizer after sowing the seed but all those starter fertilizers are full of Nitrogen. I went with a product that's 16-4-8. Now does the seed require the fertilizer more then the grass?
That one feeding should do well and that should be all you have to do. Just water the seed well without soaking, just keep it moist and you should be good. Shouldn’t have to fertilize any more until spring.
I have found sunniland products here in NW Florida at Lowe's. It is 16-0-8.
That should work well! Thanks for watching!
I had some pretty good luck with a some bare spots by raking out a lot of thatch, then mising some topsoil in with my very clay/sandy soil in those spots and keeping water on the areas after overfeeding with centipede seed. But I'm seeing you're recommending sand and potting soil for leveling. Would that be a better formula for reconditioning the soil in bare spots?
The sand seems to level better than just soil, also topsoil alone tends to wash out on heavy rains. I like a mix but you can have success either way. Thanks for watching. I’m going to do a video soon on bare spots.
Also chinch bugs do make dry looking holes also.
Have Centipede in Southern LA, there definitely is not enough information out there. Props for starting a channel. Good luck.
Will you burn the grass if you use Anugreen in May or June? I live in Northwest Florida where the temp is very hot and humid.
No as long as the lawn is dry and then it is watered in. However it’s interesting that the label says for North Florida do not apply more than once per year on Centipede due to restrictions. I’ve used the GreenTRX by the same manufacturer and it’s good stuff. Thanks for the comment and watching!
@@CentipedeCentralLawnCare Thanks for the reply.
Great video. 👍🏿 Got a new subscriber here.
Thanks for watching and the sub!
New to the south/gulf coast. I am use to fescue/Zoysia grass. We have new centipede sod and have dark green raised spots and red/brow spots all over. It is also pretty uneven. Would you recommend broadcasting sand on the lawn?
That wouldn’t hurt. If you could mix in some bagged compost or peat moss with the sand that would help get some organic matter down and help the lawn level out and give the stolons a reason to spread.
Excellent post!
Thanks for watching!
Great info. Thank you! Do you have recommendations on core aeration and/or dethatching?
Thanks! Yes I did a dethatch video about a month ago, check it out. Core aeration is great at getting water, air and nutrients down in the root zone.
@@CentipedeCentralLawnCare Excellent. I'm working my way through your videos and learning much. Thanks!
I aerated once this year and I think it helped. Should I do it again in the fall?
I spoon feed with Scott’s I never use the whole bag at one time. I spread that bag out over a years time. I also use a hand spreader instead.
Thanks for watching. That’s definitely a benefit of centipede. A bag of fert can last a long time depending on square footage.
Excellent video. I don't have any experience with centipede grass yet but i try to learn as much as I can when I can
great video. what are your thoughts on 5-10-30 + Iron: Starter And Centipede Formulation ?
Thanks! That would be a good choice if developing centipede via seed or sod installation, but as a maintenance fertilizer that would be a lot of Phosphorus, which centipede doesn’t like. The other numbers are good though.
Great videos! So it's end of August. My C lawn looks pretty good but there are areas where I have high weed volume. Some crabgrass, some clover and some others I don't recognize. Anything I can do at this time of year to take out some of the weeds and prep the grass for a strong takeover next Spring?
Sure you could try the Fertilome Weed Free Zone, a great broadleaf control safe for centipede. See my Kill Winter Weeds video. It works great in temps higher than 65. Thanks!!
Thanks for the channel you are providing, I truly enjoy the content, I have a large lawn of centipede grass with all the same problems you have described, bare spots, weeds, lots of shade in certain areas, and I like the approach you are using to improve your lawn, I have subscribed to your channel and have every intention of following your advice and insight to improve my own lawn, I live in the panhandle of Florida, south of you, I’m very excited about future videos you post! David
Thanks for your kind words and thanks for watching!
If “NPK” represents the % of content in bag of fertilizer, I understand nitrogen and phosphorus but why “K” for potassium? Or am I all wrong? Just curious.
It’s based on the periodic table of the elements. Thanks for watching!

Ok, should’ve thought of that. Thanks so much

Great information on centipede grass! Answers some questions on why the dead spots in my lawn and especially how and when to fertilize.
Thanks! Appreciate the positive feedback.
Is fertilome dangerous for pets?
It is a synthetic but I don’t think you have anything to worry about unless your pets eat grass.
I’ll do a video on some good organic options as well. Thanks!
Thanks for starting a centipede lawn channel! There’s not much out there. What would you recommend to top dress my lawn with to make it level? Sand or top soil? I’m in NC
I would recommend a sand/soil mix, maybe 70/30. You could get some play sand and potting soil (not garden soil, too chunky) and mix in a wheel barrow with a shovel. The sand has the best properties for leveling. Too much soil sinks and doesn’t stay level over time. Thanks for watching!
A mix of sand and compost
I think our centipede died... I have a pic of our lawn... I cannot figure out what's wrong... I am dethatching and going to reseed
Centipede can be prone to winter kill and also Take All Patch fungus. If it’s a fungus it can recover.
Great videos! I'm subscribing. I'm over here in GA on the coast with Centipede. Do you ever get Bahia grass invading your lawn? If so, how do you get rid of it?
I don’t think I get Bahia but I do get a good bit of carpetgrass. I’ll do a video on it sometime. As far as control of Bahia, I would think you could try a preemergent application of Atrazine and probably have to do a follow up application at some point but I’m not sure how well that would work. It would probably be difficult to get rid of. I did see this:

Thanks for watching and the nice comment!
I'm in SC and deal with Bahia grass, Ive found that MSM Turf works very good. Have it almost completely gone in my front yard and hopefully completely gone in my back yard this year. I just put down Atrazine for the first time a couple days ago so im hoping it works and I don't even have to use the MSM Turf this year.
@@leemitchell4663 I use Atrazine in the late winter or just as temps start to rise a little to fight winter weeds. It takes about 2 weeks or more to see results, so be patient. Atrazine never seemed to do much with Bahia in my yard. I tried msm but it killed everything around the bahia including the centipede. Is there a safe rate for mom with cemtipede? I hear Celcius can help it go away as well, so that's my plan this year since I will be using it for weeds in the heat. ⁴
@@PatrickWitherow yeah I heard atrazine was a slow worker.. I went ahead and sprayed it lightly being my first time using it. With the warm weather this week and the rain coming in 7 days I figured that lined up perfectly with how I've heard its supposed to be used. My grass is still brown except for the tons of clover and other winter weeds.. I also put down some DG Barricade back first week of Feb so im trying to start the year off right this year. 1st time using any pre emergent. Ive only had the house for 1 and a half now.
With the MSM turf I went lightly and only blanket sprayed my front yard and spot sprayed the back.. Only had about 5 or so bahia grass seed heads pop up all last year in my front yard. Grass was set back alittle but came back nicely. Never really changed colors just grew really slower than normal. I didn't know about atrazine then, so im hoping I took care of the back yard this year with the atrazine.
@@leemitchell4663 MSM Turf is a AWESOME product for bahia, one application per season is all that is needed. Great Info
Hey bud great videos... i love soaking up all this knowledge cause I'm definitely new to this lawn care stuff. Gotta question for you, i got a couple bags of 16-0-8 coming for my 20,000 sq ft lawn this year. The rate is set for 3.6 lbs per 1000 sq ft. The bag said it'll cover up to 5,000 sq feet. If I put down half that rate on my centipede will that then make each bag cover 10,000 sq ft. Instead of 5,000. Might sound dumb but making sure my math is correct. Thanks.
That is correct. That’s actually a good thing to do with centipede. Give it light doses, called “spoon feeding”. Also 16-0-8 is a good analysis for Centipede. Thanks for the comment and watching!
@@CentipedeCentralLawnCare thanks bud.
