I've been having these issues too. I've already flushed out my blinker fluid and replaced my muffler bearing already. I never thought that the piston return spring would need replacing. Thanks ChrisFix!
Hi temp foam rubber works just as well, if not better. Just make sure to use 2 cups titanium chips in the block after draining oil and before smoke reving it. I've seen some guys drain the oil and forget the chips and rev it to the floor for 30 minutes. It smokes and squeals and auto shuts off fine. But it loses a little power after that. Sometimes just playground sand works too. But then you have to take out the plugs, grind off the thread build up before hammering back into the heads. But thats about the only way to get the sanding powder into the cylinders
Just fitted new piston return springs to my cuminins 6bta, doubled the bhp! Amazing! Seems like the engine is bouncing around a bit more than usual now tho, probably highlighted the worn piston con rod shock absorbers. Thanks so much, life changing!

You got me. I've been working on cars for fun for like two years, I never replaced anything on a Honda so I was like, "Maybe that's a weird Honda thing?" Lol
I too, in 50 years, never heard of such a thing as piston return springs. It's seems counter productive. The springs apply additional force during combustion but the springs need energy to compress. With added maintenance, I don't see the need but then I'm not an automotive engineer. No honda do I see in my future.
I'm really glad I'm not the only one to fall for this. This was legit. I thought it must just be a Honda thing or something cause my Chevy sure ain't got these! This was great.
Man, I do I feel had. Yes, that little voice was telling me something but I didn't listen. I did notice his logo on the return spring box...that was clue number one. I remember last year it was headlight fluid. Thanks for waking me up.
After one year I finally found out something was off I had always wondered why had I never heard of these springs I guess this just shows how much of a tech I’m improving little by little 😂
Wait.. i saw this video 1 - 2 years ago and believed it and was really confused on how those springs hold up, heck i think i even told some friend about some engines having some springs. Today i saw the video decided to rewatch it and as i was eating my hands were busy so i watched to the end and just realized it was an April fools video lol. I never expected to get april fooled by chrisfix
I was watching this because I plan on changing a head gasket this week. I was on Rockauto looking for the springs before the video was over because I figured I might as well do that while I'm in there
I can't believe I sat through that. An unbelieveable amount of effort for a sham. The merchandising on the boxes is a work of art on its own. It's all baloney... but you still can't beat a ChrisFix video.
After watching this video I thought to myself, "Why would a piston even need a return spring" ...and that's when I realised what was going on here! ChrisFix strikes again.
Anonymous I actually thought he was serious until he showed the cutaway image of the engine with the gigantic springs right in the compression chambers and I was like whoa, wait a minute here. The owners manual was super convincing though.
Actually somebody came to my store asking for piston return springs , I mean the guy was talking very serious he was on his teens , so I was laughing inside so badly , but I have to explain him, I felt so bad for him apparently he watched this video but not to the very end OMG 😆, Chris please make a disclaimer please I hope in my career within the future I don’t have to deal with this again 😂, even the guy got mad at me , thankfully there was another mechanic in the store who confirmed the prank 😂. I am a parts pro manager and a mobile mechanic in my time off , so I was dying inside afterwards.
His return springs probably weren't his issue. More likely his camshaft was wiped on several lobes. You should have sold him some push rod extensions. Instant increase of at least 40 ft/lbs. torque.
Chris your knowledge and wisdom of cars is very impressive. Your helping a lot of people attempt things they most likely would never even consider. You have a very solid mindset and attitude. God bless you!

You got me. I own a shop and seen some crazy things. This tops the cake. the whole time I'm thinking, what is he talking about. I almost stopped the video to look up crazy mods to see what I'm missing. That just didn't make any sense. Nice touch with the broken ones. The end gave it away when you drained the oil.
I am so gullible. From the very start I KNEW I had never seen these before, but still felt like I was learning something new and watched the whole thing.
In Mexico we reuse BED SPRINGS, they have the same compression rate and are cheaper. That's where they get you on the cost. By the way I just did this on the wife's car, Now I have to do it on my truck, sucks because I have to remove the fusion drive and the continuum transfunctioner.
I wish he would do an actual video on how to replace headgasket and valve cover gaskets, cause its literally some of the more expensive works you could go to the Mechanic for
Haha, you had me going there for a while. Until I saw the animation of the springs, I just assumed that these thing surely had their place somewhere in the engine. Very convincing retail packages for the springs. I loved the 'used' ones as well. Great video!
CherubielOne man he almost had me but I was like I have taken plenty heads and never ever seen or heard of one, I mean he took the time to make those decals and even the owners manual wow good stuff

I too, in 50 years, never heard of such a thing as piston return springs. It's seems counter productive. The springs apply additional force during combustion but the springs need energy to compress. With added maintenance, I don't see the need but then I'm not an automotive engineer. No honda do I see in my future.
bain5872 Incase you didn't realise it's an April Fools prank bain. There's no such thing as piston return springs. Watch the end of the video.
It's insane how good your April fool's videos are, if I didn't know better I'd have fallen for it easy
Make sure to add sugar into the oil to make that engine run sweet!!!!
dont say that some stypid people will read that and make it hahahhaa
@@erhanmustafov1513 then throw some protein powder in it to make sure it runs strong too
And don't forget some lotion! Not only do you want your engine to run sweet and strong, but also smooth! xD
Thank you for that tip
add some carb rich diet for g8 milage
You make these feel so legit
Well I sure fell for it........... I was an IDIOT
Even known this was an April fools video, it was still super informative to help me replace my head gasket on my 94 Del Sol!
Did it have piston return springs?
After one year I finally found out something was off I had always wondered why had I never heard of these springs I guess this just shows how much of a tech I’m improving little by little 😂
Piston return spring??? Checks video date...
same here xD
Same
Thank you for telling me to do that
Same lol
saame :))
I mean you even had the sheet in the car manual... who does this! Details man you got me!
I go all out haha
Was having a horrible day today, this video made my day a little better.
Glad your day is a little better
Wait.. i saw this video 1 - 2 years ago and believed it and was really confused on how those springs hold up, heck i think i even told some friend about some engines having some springs. Today i saw the video decided to rewatch it and as i was eating my hands were busy so i watched to the end and just realized it was an April fools video lol. I never expected to get april fooled by chrisfix
Faking an owner’s manual is legendary
Bruh i was watching this and i was like piston springs? How did not i hear about this before and then i realised it was april 1st. Nice one chris :D
Boris the Blade me to bro.. I even search it on google.. I was like, piston spring?? Really?????
Imagine someone actually pulled their whole engine apart to find out it was a joke
Good time to do the head gasket though!
Imagine someone pulled their engine apart and panicked when they didn't see the return springs that were supposed to be there!
Chris, I just pulled my 6g74 engine apart and found that I don’t have return springs.:. Should I be worried?
I was watching this because I plan on changing a head gasket this week. I was on Rockauto looking for the springs before the video was over because I figured I might as well do that while I'm in there
@@marquitalley8354 I think the real issue is pulling the engine apart and not having new springs available to replace the supposed old ones.
P0401
P = prank
04 = April
01 = First
I love chrisfix
Haha you figured it out!
@@chrisfix hi chris
@@chrisfix Mr. Chris
Your DriftStang did a 15.8 second 1/4 mile.
How much would it after supercharging?
@Nate Zab you are a legend.
I couldn't think of that even in 7 million years.
@@chrisfix
5 years back did you ever think you would have 6.8 million subs and buy a Maserati for your dad?
Chris fix fooled me, after all this time i noticed until today that he fooled me all this 5 years 😂😂😂😂😂
I literally watched thinking they were real
Why would I make a video on something fake? :p
I mean the diagrams looked pretty legitimate what was actually wrong with the car? Just the head gasket was blown?
I think the previous owner of my car replaced the return springs with a return airbag system.
Me too lol I was like wtf Honda
Haha that's why you need to watch the entire video! ;)
His return springs probably weren't his issue. More likely his camshaft was wiped on several lobes. You should have sold him some push rod extensions. Instant increase of at least 40 ft/lbs. torque.
@@chrisfix lmao
Chris your knowledge and wisdom of cars is very impressive. Your helping a lot of people attempt things they most likely would never even consider. You have a very solid mindset and attitude. God bless you!
oh dear
oh boy
Very clever with the Blue Driver code reader. It made it much more convincing!
Man he even checked it on the manual!!! OMG
Lol, he printed out a paper with that on it then stuck it int he manual!
Do a super clean interior detail video on your family's cars
The tough part is that all my cars have clean interiors. I will find one with a dirty interior so stay tuned!
ChrisFix please do!!!!
Just do the Del Sol you just got.
As a former car detailer, I know from experience you will not have any trouble finding a dirty car. Just ask a parent if you can clean their car.
ChrisFix Just clean the Del Sol
I was thinking through the whole video, "wow, what an effort", you really out did yourself this year Chris 😂 Awesome video!
Haha thanks!
you have way too much time....
Andr3iu, I work 14hrs a day 7 days a week so idk if you can tell me I have too much time. This is my job so I go above and beyond with what I do!
I guess it helped that the car actually needed a headgasket.
This video has really helped me diagnose many engine problems over the years.
BTW, when the springs get worn out, they're called Sprungs.
I FALL FOR THIS EVERY YEAR CHIRSFIX! HOW DARE YOU.
The editing was perfect when showing the owner's manual.
It’s like 7am here, I’m taking a shower and wondering to myself wtf is a piston return spring and why I never heard of it before and then I see them and I’m like “okay seems legit” still don’t get why but sure... you got me good, great videos as usual!!! Had a good laugh so I’m happy!
😂same
I was sitting here this whole time questioning my knowledge of cars. Thinking maybe it’s just imports that do this 🤔 and then I was crushed
it was an April fools prank lol no such thing
Same lol I was like whhaaaat
I did the same thing, haha! I stopped the video halfway and googled piston return springs and found them at kaleco auto... then I knew. :P
I’ve been watching all the April first videos today, can’t wait until the 2024 one!
Wow you had me fooled. I was convinced piston return springs was an actual thing. I was actually confused when you said April fools until I scrolled down to the comments. I’m gullible lol
Drunk Green Driver me too I feel dumb now lmao
Drunk Green Driver well he really made it very believable, printing stickers, manual page, doing animated gif.... Dang he really trolled me too😂
got me good too XD
I was like, what the hell I've never heard of piston springs 😂
Had me fooled too I had never heard of those before and by the end of the video I was sold
You got me. I own a shop and seen some crazy things. This tops the cake. the whole time I'm thinking, what is he talking about. I almost stopped the video to look up crazy mods to see what I'm missing. That just didn't make any sense. Nice touch with the broken ones. The end gave it away when you drained the oil.
haha thanks!
I honestly never knew until the end of the video!
I am so gullible. From the very start I KNEW I had never seen these before, but still felt like I was learning something new and watched the whole thing.
U still learn to replace a head gasket
Exaxtly that😂
Still watching this 6 years after this vid release
p0401? thats interesting that the "piston return spring" code has the same numbers as april 1st 04/01, nicely done chris i see you
it's actually the code for ERG circulation as well...
@@alex-marquette I know that one too well. xD
Bruhhhh
Damn good eye
I waited a year for this video and was not disappointed!
Haha awesome!
In Mexico we reuse BED SPRINGS, they have the same compression rate and are cheaper. That's where they get you on the cost. By the way I just did this on the wife's car, Now I have to do it on my truck, sucks because I have to remove the fusion drive and the continuum transfunctioner.
Dang now that’s being resourceful!
LMAO nice
Victor Villasana best comment
@Victor Villasana.....Did you use the worn-out bed-springs from the Wife's side?
Victor Villasana was that a king or queen bed?
I wish he would do an actual video on how to replace headgasket and valve cover gaskets, cause its literally some of the more expensive works you could go to the Mechanic for
Not to say that this doesnt count or that its a bad video just that it be awesome if it were more in focuse
I'm planning on that soon, stay tuned!
@@chrisfix Cheers legend!
EVEN THE OWNERS MANUAL!!!! YOU SHOULD BE ON ONE OF THE LATE SHOWS AS A GUEST!!!
You need to have your own tv show man your videos are awesome!!!
Thanks man!
You put so much work into april fools videos
I don't know what you're talking about..
I just replaced my piston springs and my 1998 Fiat Punto runs like a dream right now
First I did doubt, but removing head on my Golf Mk2 I saw my piston springs were destroyed aswell, now works as charm
I was so confused about wtf piston return springs were until I saw the release date. But this helped me learn all of what I need to replace the head gasket, so thanks Chris!!
😂😂😂😂 It's 6 am I just woke up. I just can't. You hurt my brain. And I'm a mechanic... Now time to go to work and install some new piston springs.
haha
Same here, though I didn't pay enough attention in school 😂

Hey, the blinker on my Infiniti M45 doesnt seem to be working, do i need new blinker fluid?
Nicer than blinkers fluid
Aaaah the chrisfix april fools video. It's like christmas, but way better
it gets me every single time!!!
man just taught us how to fix return springs and a head gasket same video respect
Thanks for the tutorial. I'll do it on my Mazda RX-8 rotary engine.
Ťuleň Dedinský I tried it on mine and used the 150 pound spring, and it cured my unreliability!
Unfortunately nothing can cure a rx8 unreliability accept a v8 swap lol
Ťuleň Dedinský You gotta buy those triangular piston return springs 😉😉😉
Why am I addicted with ChrisFix videos I don't even own a car I am 14...
Glad you enjoy the videos!!!
SotoPlays the same problem!
SotoPlays same😂😂 better learn it now instead of paying the garage your money when you have a car!
same lol

My man making tutorials for something that doesn't exist. Love it
I replaced the head gasket
ChrisFix yeah i noticed but first time watching this i immediately searched for piston return springs, i feel so dumb. Awesome prank 10/10 would fell for it again
From now on, I'll have to check the date the video was posted on for every video I watch😂
I replaced mine with a set of high performance twin piston return springs , and what a difference it made ! I think now that I will replace the cam pressure sensor, and with the extra horsepower, I will need to upgrade the brake gaskets.
Awesome man! Gotta get it dynoed now!
And sell the backup engine (safety first)
Don't forget about the fuel injected lug nuts?
Did you make sure your camshaft pretensioners were good?
Dude for 2 years ive thought this was real
:p
@@chrisfix I watched the entire video didn't think anything of it, re-watching it now and I feel so dumb haha. I though the del-sol was a weird card anyway so I didn't think anything of it. That graphic had me laughing so hard
I also find it it. 😭
@@EliteNK I think the del sol is a type of civic if I’m correct or if it’s not a type of civic I they grab a civic and said let’s make a few changes but I could be wrong
It is real
The 4.2k dislikes are the people that actually did this to their car 😆
Guys at parts stores are so onto it, they'll say "just sold the last one. Its gonna be 3 weeks for the next one. Eyedropper wouldnt work huh?" "Uh..well I figured I'd just get a new one anyways"
After 15 minutes walking around the store, "So um..its been so long since I tried an eyedropper...how do you do it?" "The same way as the old way". By now theyre freaking out. " just fill an eyedropper 1/2 way with warm water. NOT TOO WARM THOUGH. VERY IMPORTANT. 2 grains of salt, put 1 drop on the end of you turn signal every 5 minutes for two hours. Mortens salt works best".
Took my car apart was like that's the problem the was none then didn't have a car to get to the part store long story short they thought I was crazy an my phone wouldn't pull up the video in the store spent three hours trying to pull the video up cause wasn't driving home to do it all over again got stoped by the cops figured out the car was stolen by the time I go outta jail to figure out it was a joke lost my car house an job
@@jbstepchild
Makes one wonder how they got jobs there, huh? They'd rather sell new spark plugs for $$, when all you really have to do after the first 200,000. Miles is rotate them. And if the engine starts smoking, you'll know it's old enough to take care of itself, since it can buy cigarettes.
@@AngryHybridApe my engine is old enough to start smoking! Check out my 3/4 million miles video lol
@@ElectricBlakeGames
Oh yeah. Its ready for a smoking jacket and pipe. lol
Dude,I disassembled the entire engine to "replace" the springs only to find out there are no springs and the video was published on the 1st of april =)))
Nice one Chris =))))
Well I got fooled...
I really should start checking those dates, Chris Fix's April Fool's guides are so convincing.
lol :P
ShadowVipers that's the point none of us want any of the people that don't know any better to do any of this stuff
Awesome, your creativity is great. lol have a good “1”
Thwn what did you change exactly? :D
Regular Reactor I just added the check dates part
This dude makes the best april fools pranks ever

Those transition while removing and adding the springs to the video were very smooth
I love how even the fault code says April 1st. Awesome detail Chris!😂
