Absolutely not the best ship fresh out of the box. Mamba takes some time & lovin'. Engineered, its got 2 big boy guns on it's shoulders & a monster in the middle that you can put to work in the cz all day. It's a pilot's pilot ship for the stick & rudder men who just need a fighting chance & a shot of whiskey. Solid video as always
I look at this ship and see an American WW2 heavy fighter. Not in appearance, but in purpose. Approach fast, hit really hard for a short time, fly out of range before they can do anything about it. Put simply, boom ‘n’ zoom.
so clipper? you forget something, this zooming tactic needs ram, so hullmass, the mamba is a shieldtank, cant ram effectively, low hull weight and armor, clipper is better at this or the FAS
Actually! because Mamba has all hardpoints on top of the ship and around cockpit, makes it much more accurate on target compared with FDL where all hardpoints are under ship and cockpit at the highest distance from them, harder to put all weapons on target.
I'm sure most know that lateral/vertical thrust differs ship-to-ship, though unwritten. And many likely know that that includes max thrust speed as well as thrust acceleration/deceleration. A ship may have higher max thrust, but takes longer to reach that speed than a ship with lower max thrust. But......all of those values are also affected by FA off/on.....not just forward and reverse. Pitch, yaw, roll, lateral, vertical, fore, and aft may differ in FA off. Exploring these dynamics is never a waste of time, and can reveal a niche unfilled by any other craft. And sometimes you can just make your own niche. Fly nasty you bastards!
I looove these videos .. thanks! If the FDL had a center seat in the cockpit, it'd be nigh perfect for a lot of things; but that and the paintjob make me want Mamba :O
I was shown these reviews to try and get me to give ED another try after my first attempt was ruined by flight sticks that were unfit for purpose out of the box, and it was *this* video that did it for me. This one ship I was the reason I spent something like £130 on a flight stick and reinstalled ED. I got myself an Imperial Eagle as I made my way to the Courier, then used that to save up the bounties I needed at the resource sites just outside Baraniecki Vision. Bought my Mamba, named her Whisper and armed her with multicannons while dressing her up in the trappings of a racer. And I don't one bit regret skipping over the FDL, or the Crusader. I'm right on the brink of finally setting out to meet the engineers, and finally bring my Mamba up to a competitive spec. See, Whisper's edge is in the little things. Fitted with a bi-weave shield she'll tank a few jousts with more agile mediums and then be out of range to recharge before they can get themselves turned around. Her great cockpit visibility makes it easier to track targets. She handles like a dream during travel, Whisper is the ship that taught me to take off the supercruise assist module to save weight and power. If I ever need to save a little more, I'm confident I could take off the docking assist too. And a target flying in a straight line isn't a necessity, just a luxury she enjoys when the pirates try to flee and discover they can't outrun her. At least in PvE - where my experience is - a little pip juggling, gimballed weapons and one well-timed turn are all she needs to grab hold of an FDL's tail and ride it all the way to its destruction. A little acceleration goes a long way to stay outside their turn, giving you more room to stay behind them. When it comes down to it, the FDL is unquestionably the friendlier combat ship, that much I'll grant it. An agile ship is more approachable to new combat pilots, and makes it easier to fight when the time comes. But speed gives you more control over *when* to fight. You just need to know how to use it when the battle begins.
Sometimes performance isn't everything. I really like the Mamba for the looks and _ESPECIALLY_ for it's Non-OCD-Inducing Cockpit. Which is the one thing that I hate about the Fer-De-Lance.... so much, that I can't love it - decpite being the (arguably) best (medium) combatship in Elite. 3x Plasma Accelerators (Efficient/Plasma-Slugs), 2 xmall turreted thermal vent beams (which I consider switching for MC's) , a lot of Guardian Shieled Boossters and some extra tanks is how I have equiped my Mamba. Heavily enginered of cause. It is a blast to hunt down ships in between the asteroids of a HazREZ. It is not a highly effective bounty hunting ship (compared to other combat ships), but it is FUN. Provided you are descent at flying FA/off. (Which you should practice while mining for void opals... this is a good and fun opportunity to learn FA/off - just saying.)
I just can't get a hang of flying faoff, I just overcompensate or undercompensate or wind up barreling about like I just hit a jetstream. Correction: I fly better in a jet cone than faoff
Under the icy roar of a sanguine Solo Wing, our curtain drops to the floor, on Round Table’s ring. To the rhythm of Agnus Dei, “Yo buddy, still alive?” A coward becomes an ace. “We will survive.” Is basically the Mamba when I go out in mine named "Galm 2"
When i first started watching these reviews i thought you sounded familiar, I've had sorta heard your tone and commenting "demeanor" before and then it hit me, you are the Anthony Bourdain of Elite Dangerous, with a pinch of Zero Punctuation - Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw, love it!
Really good video. My mamba is one of my main vessels. Shreds an elite NPC conda in two passes as I’ve made a hit and run style ship... 3XPA. Reaches 600 on boost and top speed around 498. Dirty drives and drag make my mamba turn on a dime! I absolutely love it. But, you are right, to get it to where it is today, took countless hours on coriolis, testing in game and a lot of variants. Engineers is essential to make this beast work. Add on: oh and I never have a heat issue anymore! Runs around 28-35 resting.
The Mamba, Viper mk3, Imp Clipper & Courier, are all a good case for implementing a kind of either a death race and/or biathlon in space, game modes/features.
@@mobiteq8220 Dunno, Imp. Eagle is to the Eagle what the Mamba tries to be to the FDL. Faster in a straight line but turns worse, more theoretical firepower, but not the bigger distributor/powerplant to feed them.
Mamba with the gold skin in VR is about the most gorgeous thing I've ever flown. I used it for some exploration for a while cause just looking at it made the trip worthwhile. Also: White thrusters, a purple HUD with white shields, and your favorite trinket on the dash compliments the gold so well.
@Mr Smiley Sorry but my opinion is it sucks lol. Im just so triggered by the camera on a stick thing on the front of the ship. Its especially noticable when night vision is on.
It would probably be useful in a big battle to have a wing of them equipped to do strafing runs into the battle and get out quick before rinsing and repeating.

"The Mamba is in almost every regard a little inferior to the FDL why do you even use it?" Something many CMDRs have asked me before. Here is my rebutal. Because. As a CMDR . There is ONE thing I cannot endure for long on a combat ship. Off. Center. Seats. I can deal with it for mining or salvage. But not combat. They can all argue I should be flying an FDL instead of this. No. I will not. I have never bought. Nor will I ever buy, An FDL. I will sacrifice that small amout of performance (which is mostly negated with intelligent engineering anyways). Just to have that center line seat as I blow someone up. And on top of it. It's not just a big space t riangle. It's got style. The Mamba. What the FDL should have been look wise and seat wise.
FDL virgin: refuses to explore other ships refuses to explore at all only cares about the meta doesn’t care about style, FDL is a space shuttle Mamba Chad: REVERSKI cares about style and grandeur takes second best and makes it the best
love your reviews. I can understand everything you say and everything you mean. which unfortunately I can't do with other youtubers. and despite being very informational you do a very good job and making everything almost poetic. thank you for being my favorite ED youtuber.
I may be late, but it seems like the Mamba's one of those hit-and-run assassins: Get in, kill the 1-3 things you need to, boost away and get out. Whereas the FDL is more of the prolonged brawler, and can stay and fight so long as she has ammo and some recovery time.
When I look at the Mamba I'm reminded of hydroplane racing boats, they have the same kind of pontoon bow with cockpit. And I bought a Mamba, it's named Mystic. LOL
Mamba seems more of a strafing type of fighter, strike target then full thrust out of enemy range before it can get proper bearing on you, then at safe distance turn around and do it again.
Mamba is not a CQC ship. It is more like a SNIPER LONG RANGE COMBAT ship, and as said in its in game DESCRIPTION, great at HIT and RUN once enemy shields are down. Make an attack pass, speed away turn around and REPEAT.
Pure joy man! If I actually could choose a ship to fare the galaxy in it’d be this! Tight and sleek like a fighter but with JUST enough space inside to go on an excursion outside the bubble!
They really need to free up some internal slot spaces. Too much sacrificing when choosing optional Internals. ( would LOVE if they put glass on the floor of the Mamba, like the Asp. ). Put a galvanized blue paint job on mine. Prettiest ship I own.
Use multi cannon's on all the hardpoints except the two small hardpoints where gimballed beams will keep you ticking along, this solves overheating and power draw. Use FA off lots then you have a lovely fast powerfull ship for Bounty Hunting, beauty is if you get into trouble you can outrun anything that can cause you trouble.
Little disappointed there was no mention of the awesome cockpit. Between its mile long canopy and multi-level interior, its easily the prettiest interior in the game.
I think its a role play ship. I have (had) mine set up for exploring instances. repairing/refueling ships, scanning wakes and just looking like a badass when I show up.
Another cracking video. My mamba runs all beams. Has boost of around 618mps. Has shields for days because while in permanent boost + turning she goes like shit off a stick. Another great video. Glad you're back.
IMO it should have a higher boost speed so it can be an interceptor if you want it to be a combat ship. Even if to get a good lead on boost speed balance would warrant cutting the turn rate.
Ship kit you say? You have to give ZP engineers a credit for making a ship kit that shares almost no element from the original ship... Seriously, if you look closely this ship is not built on an FDL frame at all. It's engine blocks are very similar, but the rest is totally different. However, it shares the same "design language", which makes it unmistakably Zorgon Peterson.
Good review as usual but I think it's strange how a large number of people seem to think the FDL is objectively better at everything (or most things) when it's just not true. I get that it's said as a joke sometimes but I also think people should take the time to learn how to use the mamba correctly. I think the issue lies in the fact that they try to fly the 2 ships exactly the same way, which doesn't work obviously. You wouldn't fly a Corvette in the same way as a Type 10 or a cutter, and this is the same thing. People miss out on the Mamba because they are afraid of trying something new and adapting their playstyle to the ships pros and cons.
God, I want to love the Mamba. Just wished Frontier had the balls to make it something radically different instead of just a slight sidegraded FDL. I want this thing to be the muscle car of space, even more so than the FDL
another thing that really got me hooked on the mamba would have to be is the sound and when slam the throttle down you see those two thrusters in the from burning, looks great lol
There is one place in combat that it does shine. Aside from simple beauty. If you have a wing doing combat zones and one of your pilots has a mamba built for speed and range it's fairly easy to chase off opposing commanders once the group gets them to start running. I really wanted to love mine, and the theoretical does is great, but in a fight that is not one sided it can't keep the guns on target well enough to put that down to use. Can you kill stuff? Sure, but how much time do you have to waste on each target while a similar equipped fdl is chewing through everything way faster simply by having the turning speed.
I saw this video and bought a mamba anyways... mainly for the appearance yes. On paper and in your imagination it makes a badass bounty hunter. I fly in combat with FA off and ive never had the turning issue everyone seems to complain about (it has the same maneuverability as the krait II) i bought this ship expecting bark but no bite. However im not disappointed. Its better than i thought... its just a very niche ship
If I remember, fiestygoats had his cadre in decait for a while. As, I think I remember he was being hunted down by ghost legion. Boy was that a hell of a fight.
Can we get a Mamba MK II, one that's actually faster and more manoeuverable than the FDL? Keep the lower shields and hull, but actually have it be fast enough to match that speedster look.
i don't care if it's inferior to the fdl on paper. i love the mamba to death. it's pure style strapped to two massive thrusters. i engineered mine to hell and back and it's sheer joy to fly. I'm triple elite, own every ship in the game plus a FC, and when it comes to absolute fun factor this one is my favorite.
Tried to make an FDL work for months. Reviews like this made me stay away from the Mamba. But I had a slow weekend so I got one and engineered the hell out of it. Granted, I just do PVE, but I would never go back to an FDL. Once you learn FA off in the Mamba it is lethal and the predatory nature of combat in it is addictive. This is the ultimate fuck around and find out combat ship. Buy one, learn it, and you'll never regret it.
Still my main ship, though I don’t have much problem with heat, one of my builds that features missiles, I have to really really try to get it to overheat. Really only one of my newer builds, that’s begging to overheat, and it still cools off fairly quickly. Granted I do have a thermal vent beam for that particular build. But still.
The kind of ship you buy after a life of space trucking, but keep stored just to avoid any scratch. Maybe a short trip around the station and go back to the hangar.

Engineered, its got 2 big boy guns on it's shoulders & a monster in the middle that you can put to work in the cz all day. It's a pilot's pilot ship for the stick & rudder men who just need a fighting chance & a shot of whiskey.
Solid video as always
The FdL is still quite superior.
@@EvilMerlin If you're a one dimensional pilot that can't change tactics to suit the ship, then yes. In all other cases, not at all.
@@EvilMerlin A Frag Mamba is absolutely and objectively superior for jousting attacks; imo it's basically what the Mamba was built to do.
@@spaceonisorceress4406 Boring.
@@EvilMerlin To each their own! Fly whatever works for you :)
I look at this ship and see an American WW2 heavy fighter. Not in appearance, but in purpose. Approach fast, hit really hard for a short time, fly out of range before they can do anything about it. Put simply, boom ‘n’ zoom.
so clipper? you forget something, this zooming tactic needs ram, so hullmass, the mamba is a shieldtank, cant ram effectively, low hull weight and armor, clipper is better at this or the FAS
getting a mamba to do well is alot of work, but it is one of the most rewarding experiences in Elite. getting that perfect set up just feels good
Actually! because Mamba has all hardpoints on top of the ship and around cockpit, makes it much more accurate on target compared with FDL where all hardpoints are under ship and cockpit at the highest distance from them, harder to put all weapons on target.
FA Off is what turned the Gunship from a decent shooty brick, into an AC-130 in space.
Dude that music at the start fits the mamba so well.
"Clean your cockpit." - Zorgon Peterson
I understood that reference.
Qualit of videos is always top notch. But the information and delivery is also amazing.
Always suprising and refreshing
I recently had a friendly fire incident with my Frag Mamba, so I renamed it to "Dick Cheney".
Just started playing Elite and just found your videos. I love the character of these ship reviews.
Cockpit sold it to me. I can't bear with FDL views, it makes me unconfortable to fly.
I prefer the Mamba to the FerD. The top mounted huge works better for me and at least for me is easier to control
It's one of the lowest jumpers... but the Cockpit makes it super comfortable for exploration with an almost unrivaled view, just look up~.
Ah yes. Yet another ship I don’t need.
Alright, you’ve convinced me. I’m buying one
Putting Plasma Slugs on a Zorgon Peterson ship is just asking for it to self destruct from an empty tank
5:10 is the start of one of the most badass moves i've ever seen in this game.
Badass move of exploding and dying?
Under the icy roar
of a sanguine Solo Wing,
our curtain drops to the floor,
on Round Table’s ring.
To the rhythm of Agnus Dei,
“Yo buddy, still alive?”
A coward becomes an ace.
“We will survive.”
Is basically the Mamba when I go out in mine named "Galm 2"
How are things at the border?
When i first started watching these reviews i thought you sounded familiar, I've had sorta heard your tone and commenting "demeanor" before and then it hit me, you are the Anthony Bourdain of Elite Dangerous, with a pinch of Zero Punctuation - Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw, love it!
Let the haters hate. I will fly the unfriendly skies in my golden mamba.
Don't forget the Imp. Eagle!
@@mobiteq8220 Dunno, Imp. Eagle is to the Eagle what the Mamba tries to be to the FDL. Faster in a straight line but turns worse, more theoretical firepower, but not the bigger distributor/powerplant to feed them.
It's also notable that the Orca hold the same max speed. Orca is OG
Yes the Mamba is lovely in VR. I did the entire DW2 trip in one. Mine is all white with blue engine trails.
Thanks for yet another thoughtful and considered ship review, I look forward to your videos every week - and I'd love to see more event collaborations if you can fit them into your schedule too, The Getaway Driver was great fun. Keep up the good work, hope to see you someday out in the black o7
"The Mamba is in almost every regard a little inferior to the FDL why do you even use it?"
Something many CMDRs have asked me before.
I just LOVE taking my Racing Mamba to some canyons just to race around, while looking out the beautiful giant canopy. Wonderful.
FDL virgin:
refuses to explore other ships
refuses to explore at all
only cares about the meta
doesn’t care about style, FDL is a space shuttle
Mamba Chad:
REVERSKI
cares about style and grandeur
takes second best and makes it the best
FDL is just a big adder in terms of styling
well... 5 millions bucks to get the FDL's pilot seat centered. I guess that's one way to do it
I miss this guy!
love your reviews. I can understand everything you say and everything you mean. which unfortunately I can't do with other youtubers. and despite being very informational you do a very good job and making everything almost poetic. thank you for being my favorite ED youtuber.
You're very welcome
Wonderful video man! Just bought my mamba last week, and now You've got me inspired to go use it!
I may be late, but it seems like the Mamba's one of those hit-and-run assassins: Get in, kill the 1-3 things you need to, boost away and get out.
Whereas the FDL is more of the prolonged brawler, and can stay and fight so long as she has ammo and some recovery time.
That's sounds accurate to me. I use mine to clean house and be on my merry way before anyone even realizes their hulls are missing.
When I look at the Mamba I'm reminded of hydroplane racing boats, they have the same kind of pontoon bow with cockpit. And I bought a Mamba, it's named Mystic. LOL
Another well executed video, lovel arty shots, descriptions etc!! Good effort
My engineered MAMBA is a beast. Prefer it over my FDL. If you need to hit sharper turns in combat, just boost & turn.
Pure joy man!
If I actually could choose a ship to fare the galaxy in it’d be this!
Tight and sleek like a fighter but with JUST enough space inside to go on an excursion outside the bubble!
Note: saying Fer de Lance is just as quick as saying F-D-L.
Not now, mayby wen ya posted this

They really need to free up some internal slot spaces. Too much sacrificing when choosing optional Internals. ( would LOVE if they put glass on the floor of the Mamba, like the Asp. ). Put a galvanized blue paint job on mine. Prettiest ship I own.
Just wish it had a better jump range so I can use it as a exploration ship. It looks amazing.
The ship is a hit and run. Think F4F and the Zero. You zoom in hit and run. That’s it.
That was by far the best ED ship review I've ever watched
Use multi cannon's on all the hardpoints except the two small hardpoints where gimballed beams will keep you ticking along, this solves overheating and power draw.
Use FA off lots then you have a lovely fast powerfull ship for Bounty Hunting, beauty is if you get into trouble you can outrun anything that can cause you trouble.
Little disappointed there was no mention of the awesome cockpit. Between its mile long canopy and multi-level interior, its easily the prettiest interior in the game.
Id choose this over the fdl for 1 reason. The looks.
I think its a role play ship. I have (had) mine set up for exploring instances. repairing/refueling ships, scanning wakes and just looking like a badass when I show up.
the courier is the real rp ship :)
I love my mamba. Over 3k shields and the hard point placement/ class of hard points suit my style.
I forgive the Mamba for all it's short comings over the FDL just for the seating position compared to the FDL's dogs breakfast of a cockpit.
because when u get it there it's awesome..love ur work
What’s the intro guitar track from?
Big love to your videos, you make some of the best ED vids in the Galaxy partner ;) Also, the Mamba looks amazing lol
God, I want to love the Mamba. Just wished Frontier had the balls to make it something radically different instead of just a slight sidegraded FDL. I want this thing to be the muscle car of space, even more so than the FDL
another thing that really got me hooked on the mamba would have to be is the sound and when slam the throttle down you see those two thrusters in the from burning, looks great lol
wow it feels like im watching a Discovery Channel documentary
I want to love the ship so bad, the small hardpoints, terrible turning and terrible convergence all combine to just make it not quite good enough.
Ye
I would never use my space Ferrari for combat
If I remember, fiestygoats had his cadre in decait for a while. As, I think I remember he was being hunted down by ghost legion. Boy was that a hell of a fight.
Awesome I have something to watch! I'm going to make breakfast right now just to watch this properly.
Can we get a Mamba MK II, one that's actually faster and more manoeuverable than the FDL? Keep the lower shields and hull, but actually have it be fast enough to match that speedster look.
I just got a mamba, but I think I fucked up and bought it in a system with no go fsd drives, so I'm stuck
change your old ship, simple ^^
i don't care if it's inferior to the fdl on paper. i love the mamba to death. it's pure style strapped to two massive thrusters. i engineered mine to hell and back and it's sheer joy to fly.
Excellent review. Really told me what I needed to know about this ship when considering it compared to others. =)
just to fly it is fun... but it is only really good as a 3rd or 4th ship to have... But I still love mine.
But still.
Your elite content is fire... love your style
The kind of ship you buy after a life of space trucking, but keep stored just to avoid any scratch. Maybe a short trip around the station and go back to the hangar.
Wait - the one guy puts all frags on his Mamba? There are no huge frags, so he gives up a huge hardpoint for a third large frag?
I fly mine FOR the looks ;)
And for her dominating growl as she fills the dock with thrusters.
Love your vids and your style... Keep it up
I may buy one, looks so damn good.
Whats the name of the song
It's just a lesser FDL...BUUUUT it has a centered cockpit so yeah, mamba for me it is.
