What is the MOST VALUBLE lesson you learned this year about your photography? Or just in general, let me know in the comments and thanks so much for the support!
I don't know if I can say that I have already learned it, but this year my biggest focus has been working on my composition. Your videos as well as a few of the other photographers that I subscribe to on here have really helped me to see that I had been over complicating things. By focusing on the technical aspects of photography, I was missing the big picture LITERALLY.
Thanks for the work you do and I can't wait to see what this year brings.
travel local, revisit old spots different perspectives and conditions.
Learning patience.
During the 2 lockdowns we had, I discovered macrophotography and that I was really interested in cloud photography. The lesson : I should stop complaining and do with what I have as much as possible. Wish you all the best for 2021.
When I heard you say you didn't realize how much you traveled and 2020 gave you a chance to explore San Francisco more, your words really hit my heart. About 10 years ago, I was traveling in Japan photographing the Nachi waterfall. Then, when I went into a local restaurant for lunch and saw these beautiful photographs by local artists hanging on the walls, I had an epiphany. I would never be able to take those photos unless I live there too. There's a reason why Ansel Adam's Yosemite is so intriguing because he lives there all his life. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy traveling and photography but at that moment, it occurred to me that I should shoot locally more because I'll be able to discover it more, have more chances to catch great light because I'm familiar with the place. By the way, I live in Fremont and I'm happy to know that there's a fellow photographer living in the Bay Area. Let's see if our path crosses some day.
Agreed... That is the sad part of it all... we all live near very interesting part of the world but we never ever go and see those and instead, travel the world over to see other parts, discounting the local beauty...
Love that Golden Gate shot, that should be an album cover for a local indie band.
Some killer shots mate. My fave might be the fine art shot of the bridge. Very different from most GG shots.
Thanks so much man!
I always love how honest you are in your videos, I also love how you diversify your work, a true artist! wishing you a successful year, Michael!
Thanks for sharing that with us Michael.
I loved the UTAH vlog that place is other worldly.
Some amazing images this year.
All the best from Scotland for 2021.
Thanks
Absolutely loved this break down of your past year Michael!
I love the great pictures, your calming tones, your self-deprecation and your honesty. Great channel Michael, thanks from Australia! Pete
I always appreciate the mood and tone of your videos. Thanks for the 2020 summary. Beautiful work, as always. The most valuable lesson for me was, "keep on trying!" Working on different techniques, styles, etc... it's easy to give up when things don't work out the first few times. But it always pays to stick with it.
Great look back Michael, some fantastic images, Thanks for sharing and happy new year.
Masterful! Michael Shainblum you are such a great artist. Thanks a ton for sharing the amazing.
Wonderful video, Michael! Thanks for sharing the beauty of the world as you see it with us. You have a powerful gift!
Michael, thanks for the awesome content over the course of 2020. Looking forward to 2021.
These are amazing shots! Your time lapses are just serene. Thanks so much for sharing. Your work is so inspiring!
Incredible shots!! Enjoyed your work so much this year. Good luck for 2021.
Sensitivity and beauty your art is. Thanks for the fresh air you bring in.
Such beautiful images. Absolutely enchanting.
Beautiful and stunning images. Thank you.
Great shots, all of them! Loved your Videos this year, especially the ones above the fog which probably is my favourite Image of yours, too. That Bridge Photo though!
Congratulations, Michael. Your work inspires me and I learn a lot from you.
Thanks for inspiring !!
Stunning images mate, just fantastic, thanks for sharing.
Beautiful images and video. Hope 2021 is a good year and you keep exploring your local area.
Love all the images makes me want to come back to San Francisco and Yosemite. Look forward to seeing what you create this year 💜
Fantastic! Have a great new year
that bridge shot had me saying, yeah, that's dope af
Wow 🤩 what a year of photography. Very inspiring! Love the shot at 13:30... stunning, and what a framing. All the best for 2021!
Congrats! Beautiful pictures, great time lapses!
Yo! Some of the elements in this video are next level! Something is different. Like I can feel more of your emotions in the video. Really well done Mike!
All the images are more than spectacular!! stunning job, really hard to pick a favourite one!
I learned this year I have to make the shoots happen, even if unpaid. Waiting around for the shoots I want to do is a waste of time. So weather I am getting paid or not, I am trying to get out and chase after it and keep my shutter working! Loved that last closing time lapse! Very nice work as well
Those are some fantastic images. May your 2021 be a good one.
A couple years ago we bought a camper and took a couple long distance trips from Michigan to the Rockies and further west. The camper was perfect in 2020 during the pandemic. We basically had our home on wheels and only stopped for gas. Social distancing wasn't an issue in the woods, well most of the time. I took my kids to some of my favorite places in Michigan's Upper Peninsula and also visited some places I hadn't seen before in the northern lower peninsula. I learned there are still alot of cool, beautiful places near home that I still need to explore. Keep Wandering!
I love all your images. My favorite is the pronghorn antelope shot. Thank you for sharing!
Excellent content, excellent images and a humble person! Congratulations, you earned another subscriber....
Stunning images!
i dont love all the pictures as much but hearing the story and why and how is quite interesting, at least as much as the picture itself. makes it easier to relate for sure!
Michael, your work continues to be outstanding 👍 Your planning, perseverance and patience paid off by the truckload in 2020. I loved all of your timelapses and stills but that bridge shot - wow!! All the best for the year ahead from the 'land downunder' 👍👍
Those were some wonderful images! Thanks!
Love this. Have a great 2021.
Thanks you as well!
Great video man. Stunning photos. Hard to choose just one but the bridge shot, outstanding.
Beautiful collection! As always super inspiring and top class time lapses too :)
A beautiful collection of shots. I'm surprised none of the fall colors from Utah made it but hey it's your choice of shots. I'm excited to see your 2021 work.
Love that shirt of yours ! Love your work - been following your work for a very long time now !
Fantastic work 🙏🏽❤️
Hi Michael, You have done a great job staying creative while under the Covid curse of 2020. Your last time lapse with the rising moon skimming the bridge is awesome. My favorite image is of the view looking north of Mt. Tam and the fog poring over Daly City/SF with the inner Bay lit up. 2nd up is the lone tree with the swirling fog on the Mill Valley ridge. You have a fantastic cinematic vision so keep up the time lapses, photos and vlogs, great work! Happy 2021! Veazie
Thanks for your video, Michael. I like the points that you made on lessons learned in 2020. I had 3 workshops canceled and postponed to 2021 and turned to macro photography with flowers, since we stayed home a lot. I was tempted to purchase one of those jumping spiders for the macro work, but decided that landscape photography was my favorite “style” of photography and the spider would not get the attention it deserved after the pandemic is over! I look forward to your videos and photos in 2021.
Wow, really nice photos. 👌😍
Glad you found a path in 2020 Michael. Great review of your favorites
Thanks for watching Frank :)
Amazing pictures, congratulations!
They all are really great!
Thanks for the video.
You have made great images and you have a great landscape, a great nature in California.
Greetings from Germany.
Best wishes to all for 2021.
well done..... happy new year
That Yosemite Falls shot is f’ing incredible. I can’t imagine how stoked one must feel getting a shot like that.
Thanks for the inspiration
You really made the most of your year with the cards we were all dealt.
Your way to see things and transform them to a breathtaking images is very unique, so don`t stop do it! My favorite image is the last one, it unifies the simplicity to take such an image (location) with the complexity to be able to see it (creativity).
Thank you very much! Glad you dig that one!
Very nice!! All beautiful and inspiring photos
Thanks William!
Michael, that last clip of the moon rising is spectacular. Love your videos.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks!
Lots of déjavù moments there. Pfff... man i am so jalours, those mistphoto’s! Totaly agree with your favorit Michael. Thnx for showing again. And keep them up comming in 2021. Have a good year.
Thanks so much for the support! :)
Thank you for sharing these again Michael. My favourite is the image of the fog rolling over the hill at night (#6). Not only is a sublime image, there was a lot of work in capturing it.
Looking forward to your vlog on burnout, its been difficult for me also. Here in the UK I have had to shield for about 7 months total, no going anywhere..... man its been tough.
Hoping 2021 is a better year, stay well and safe, and I look forward to your content as always.
Thanks Tony! Creative burnout is such a tough thing. I hope to have that video out in the next few weeks. I hope my advice is a bit helpful :)
Me encantó eres grandioso gracias por compartir tus maravillosos, espectaculares fotos. ❤️ Cuidate mucho ❤️💋
Awesome shots! I love the shots of the trees in the fog, #7
Thanks Angel! :)
Fantastic images.. thanks for sharing
Thanks Rakesh!
The ending was beautiful
Thanks so much!
Your video gave me an idea to use my kid's photos in a vlog for my UA-cam channel 🙏👍
2020 was a challenge and a chance.
I hiked as never before (elev. gain 44.000 m - 144357 ft) and discovered incredible places around where I live.
Thanks for sharing great content with us during this crazy year and have a great 2021!
Wow that is awesome! Where do you live if you do not mind me asking?
@@MichaelShainblum Sure no worries, I am Italian but I live in Vienna (Austria), and Austria is for its 2/3 just...Alps. 😅
Only ca. 30% of the Country is below 500 metres (1,640 ft) and the last two-thousander Mountain (6560 ft) is only one hour from Vienna.
We are having an incredible foggy Autumn-Winter season. So I tried to put your great advice into practice!
Maybe you will be able to visit this country sometimes! All the best and stay safe!
While I loved almost all of them, Image #6 from the "I ALMOST GAVE UP" vlog was my favorite.
You made really great pictures 😍. The videos you made are awesome to learn and relax. Take care and stay healthy.
Regards from Germany
Dirk
Thank you! You too!
Always fantastic videos, Fantastic images, Its been a tough year for everyone and being stuck in the house in the UK has been so difficult. My channel is growing but the biggest thing i have learned this year in Landscape Photography is never give up and leave until there is no longer a chance of good light and my channel has been growing learning Davinci Resolve hahahha,
2020, so far the greatest year of my life - even with the Covid related debt
San Francisco - my favorite area to shoot. I'll be there more once my kids are a bit older
Love the graphical work.
Also what music is it?
thanks
Michael, really nice. Will you be switching to mirrorless or remain with Nikon D- 850, in 2021? Just wondering. Anyway your images are so inspiring!!
Thanks Lisa! I am still debating. My Nikon works really well. But I definitely need to upgrade the camera I film my vlogs with. I am currently using the A7R2 for video. I tried the A7S3 and it is a game changer for filming stuff. Thanks so much!
Thansk you for Sharing your thoughts and images Michael ...BRAVO!
New subscriber here...In that last shot of the Golden Gate (lovely, by the way), what is that blue building in the distance?
Thanks! That’s called the salesforce tower
So do you mostly take landscape toggery fee with a GoPro or do you use a cam cord to do the motion picture part
I am sorry, I don't quite understand the question
💚💚
Another question...You mentioned exposure stacking. Do you have a video on that?
I do, but only on my website Shainblumphoto.com none on here I am afraid.
Hi Michael,
Great to see some of those photos again. I was wondering, you often talk about telephoto lens and you usually relate to the 100-400mm. Do you think 400mm brings you to a nice ideal range (cropping always being an option of course) or do you also own lenses that go further like a 600mm or 800mm ? Thanks
Thanks so much. I think in almost every case 400 has been more then enough range. (and a bit of crop as needed in some cases) I almost find 100 a bit too close, for the wide end of the lens. I almost wish it was 70. But during those times when I need to go a little wider I will do a panorama. I also switch it out for the 70-200 on shoots where I know there are not going to be many telephoto compositions. I have used 500mm and 800mm for a few specialty jobs, but I just rented the lenses for those gigs.
Michael Shainblum Sounds good, I am always interested to know what gear people use and why. Thanks for your answer !
Hey Mike,
I grew up in Pacifica and on a daily basis saw the fog roll in and out just like in your video. Unfortunately, I never took one picture or video of it. Anyway, have you found other areas where the fog rolls in and out like in the bay area?
I have seen some really interesting fog flows all around CA, Oregon off the coast. Also in the Faroe Islands, Dolomites, Scotland, New Zealand. Fog seems to follow me around a bit ;)
Question for you Michael... I have a Canon 60D and want to upgrade. I only have 1 lens for it. Should I prioritize buying new lenses and upgrade the body later or upgrade the body first since I don't have a whole kit to sell if I move away from Canon?
They there Alex, I think it depends a little on what you are shooting and the technical challenges. But in most cases I would say investing in some good lenses is better then upgrading the camera body. If you do decide to move away from Canon soon, then certainly investing in a bunch of Canon glass would not be wise. In that case I would get a body from another manufacturer and grab a few new lenses as needed from them.
@@MichaelShainblum That is what I was thinking.. now I just need to decide if the R5 is worth saving for or going with the a7riv to save a little money. Both will work fine but in my head the Canon would be best.
@@ZeLoShady I think you would be quite pleased with either! Hell, I certainly would. :)
@@MichaelShainblum Absolutely, I will be! Thanks for taking the time to respond, much appreciated.
Perhaps the joy of creating beautiful images gets tempered by the pressure of creating content? As for my lessons, you can never seem to plan enough for going to an epic location. You plan the time of year for having the right light, the right color in the landscape, using TPE to know right where you want to be for when the sun is low in the sky...and then things beyond your control dictate plan “c”, for which you have no plan C, and you just make the best of what you are given. Sometimes, it works out and you walk away with that killer shot. Sometimes, you just walk away frustrated without ever getting your gear out of the bag...and maybe next time.
One of your biggest fans @mike.pauli
thanks so much!
Love your work Michael and I enjoy watching the Vlog =) However, you have way too many ads now. You need them, but please don't go over the top with them.
UA-cam adds them automatically. I didn’t select a number to put into this video
@@MichaelShainblum oh.. ok. Didn't know that. Thanks for reply =)
Let me know when you’re going to have a neck another workshop I liked it and go to yours you’re in San Francisco I’m in San Jose
I think that everyone that photograph had a benefit of Covid-19. Don’t get me wrong, I wish we never had to experience this pandemic. But it makes me more creative in my photograph’s and value more my own area where I live.
That microphone is hideous in front of you. Time lapses are very nicely done!
AAAAAAAAARRRRRGGH!!!! ANOTHER VIDEO IS OUT!! MUST WATCH TEN TIMES!!
Please do! hahah thanks so much Carlo!
Why do you put a watermark on your images in your own UA-cam video? Good images but the ambience was lost because of the watermarks. Just my opinion.
