Michael, your way of looking at a scene is so very different than anyone else. You are so very creative and intentional in your images. Your work is always inspirational. Thank you.
Thanks for the tips for shooting storm clouds. Will be out this storm season in Australia chasing super cell storms and will be having a go at doing time lapses of them.
Awesome work. One of the most impressive things about your work is that it doesn't look like you ever really use the most expensive lenses like SO many other professional photographers use. I've always found it funny all the pro's preaching how "gear doesn't matter" while they're setting up a shot with a $5,000 camera and $2,000+ lens. Your videos always remind me that it's more about the person and the know how and the trial and error that makes a great photographer, not the gear(though it doesn't hurt to have some good gear lol).
Absolutely wonderful video with some invaluable tips to creating time-lapse videos. It's something I really need to do more of. The cloud images were super nice, with a fantastic amount of texture in them! Cheers.
It’s always a good day when it’s a Shainblum upload day. Maybe I’ll try a Timelapse today if I can find a cool enough scene! I always enjoy your work. Cheers!
Smashing video Michael loved it . Due to the pandemic I have totally lost my photography mojo . I’m just starting to get some interest in photography again . Thank you for the inspiration. Regards Martin . UK
Thank You Michael. I enjoyed seeing your timelapses and now I want to do this! Thanks also for sharing the link to you video on how to export the time lapses using Photoshop. It's videos like your that keeps me wanting to do more with my photography. Oh and BTW, your images of the rock formations at the end were great too!
LR Timelapse, you say? I think my absolute fave timelapse of yours was from Zion. Those switchbacks w the long exposure, was amazing. Just as these are. Being in FL, this gives me a lot of options. Thanks for the inspiration, Michael!!
I noticed you usually don't shoot with a hood. I'm looking at the wide Whitney shot and I just can't help but worry about lens flares. Really like this lesson, great work MS.
You mean the bird shot? That was at about 200mm and the sun wasn’t in the sky, so no flare to worry about. But yeah in general if I am using filters, I don’t have the ability to have a hood on the camera, so it’s kinda one or the other type of situation.
Hi Michael, I took a bunch of timelapses during my wife and I's roadtrip this past summer! Glad to see LR Timelapse mentioned, since I used that to edit all of them! I have a Sony A7III and the Tamron 28-200mm (which I love and bought after seeing you and Mads using it!), and I was wondering what size Kase filters you use? Do you pick them for your largest current lens, or did you have another thought in mind when you chose the size?
Any tips on what you do to reduce milky way timelapse flicker through LR Timelapse Michael? I'm shooting with an A7iii. I've cut back my workflow to only use basic adjustments in Lightroom as I saw some of the LR Timelapse tutorials mention the colour flicker that can be introduced if you use things like clarity or dehaze but I still get crazy flicker in the shadows going from green to magenta across different images with the exact same camera and processing settings.
Your work is inspiring as always, Michael! It looked pretty windy when you were taking these timelapses. Do you do anything special to account for the wind (especially with a longer lens on)? I recently took a timelapse in the mountains with nice storm clouds, in some moderate wind. I was bummed when I got home and looked at the footage: it's all wobbly! My best guess is that I left SteadyShot on, but I'm not too sure.
Quick question. I am planning on going to Utah in a few days. Do I need a permit to be able to shoot at night? What is the process to be allowed to shoot there?
Yo , Michael! What time of year did you go to the Eastern Sierras? I've been wanting to make a trip up there with conditions like this. My guess is mid or late Spring, but I'm hoping you can confirm. It is my favorite kind of weather conditions to photograph. Stellar images as per usual. 👍
@@MichaelShainblum Dude, thanks! I always hope for clouds when I go to the sierras. Only time I get to see them is during my Fall fishing trip, but I plan to do photography trips in the future.
Do you still use your Dynamic Perception slider for TL? I'm wondering about alternatives since DP is no longer in business. Their controller is app-based, which is problematic.
I haven't used my DP Stage One Plus in the field in a long time, but the app still works on IOS 16, if you still have it installed. It's no longer in the App Store. The Black Forest PINE controller will work in place of the NMX and gives some additional functionality. They aren't cheap but may be less than investing in a completely new system. I'm considering getting one.
S&Q mode is great for casual timelapses where you want the camera to give you the completed project as soon as it stops recording. If you want more control over the creative process you need to use the Interval Shooting function to take raw photos and then compile and edit them in post.
S&Q is fine if you need a quick timelapse and are not too concerned with the quality. I had done a few S&Q broll time-lapses for a few of my vlogs when I was too lazy to set up a legit timelapse. But you won't get near the same dynamic range, resolution (on most cams except the A7S), or control over timing and settings. The Night Sky timelapses also will not work with that FPS.
Hey thanks, this is just my experience, but In the 15 years I have shot timelapse photography I have never had a shutter or sensor go out because of taking too many images. I have broken 5 cameras in my career, but never because of timelapses.
Michael, you have to be the most chill photographer out there.
haha thanks 😎
Michael you are the GOAT of landscape photography in my opinion 😊
That’s really kind of you to say, thank you so much! I am just glad people enjoy the imagery! :)

Amazing is all I can say. I’m old and want to learn but it all blows my mind. Thanks for all you do
Hi Michael, you nailed it again, I could watch your craftsmanship all day! Thank you.
Simple, to the point and some amazing images! thanks.
That is the single greatest time lapse I've ever seen! Thank you for sharing it!

amazing dude! Subbed! I'm going to learn a lot! beautiful work!

Excellent! I think I recognize one of those Milky Way time lapse sequences as Borrego. Possibly even Fonts Point.
Beautiful work sir!
Thank you kindly!

Beautiful work!! Thank you for sharing your tips!! Do you have any preferences on whether to use mechanical or electronic shutter for Timelapse?
I noticed you usually don't shoot with a hood. I'm looking at the wide Whitney shot and I just can't help but worry about lens flares. Really like this lesson, great work MS.
I was thinking the same thing.

Such a great video!!! Just one question, do you use manual or auto white balance for Milky Way Timelapses? Thanks

I use the 82mm filter set and then just have different magnetic thread sizes for my 72mm and 67mm lenses :)
At 1:37, when you zoomed in, on the left, it looks like the Buddha sitting on the cloud. At 1:53 he's centered. Kool!
wow timelapse! really nice shot of the Milky Way reflecting off the lake. was that Seceda shot from this year? thanks Michael.
Thanks so much! Nah that one was from 2018.

You can shoot in most places at night, just check each parks website regulations and see whats allowed.
Which camera brand you use for your UA-cam video brother?
Wich sony camera are you using

I honestly like the eastern sierras for most seasons. Winter can be gorgeous, but for this video it was late spring.
@@MichaelShainblum
Dude, thanks! I always hope for clouds when I go to the sierras. Only time I get to see them is during my Fall fishing trip, but I plan to do photography trips in the future.
Around 6:22 the clouds remind me to Vikings and Thor or just Thor
That sounds about right! Haha
If the lens is set on auto focus but you do back button focus, won’t that hold focus as well? TY
That would probably work, but I would test it out before doing a timelapse in field that way.
Do you still use your Dynamic Perception slider for TL? I'm wondering about alternatives since DP is no longer in business. Their controller is app-based, which is problematic.
I haven't used mine in a long time. I will probably go out and buy another system, the Rhino slider looked interesting.

Do you ever let the camera create the time lapse internally or do you always take all the photos out and create it manually?
I always do it via RAW files and then make the time-lapses myself.
@@MichaelShainblum Awesome, I figured as much, thanks for the response! 📸😎
What about shooting this in S&Q mode 1 fps? What's the difference?
S&Q mode is great for casual timelapses where you want the camera to give you the completed project as soon as it stops recording. If you want more control over the creative process you need to use the Interval Shooting function to take raw photos and then compile and edit them in post.

How do you edit a time lapse?
15:20 9:51
If camera has no time lapse one must have a program that does it. A real rookie here
Yes, you will need this 3:23.
I love these timelapses, but I worry it's going to significantly reduce the lifespan of the camera (and the resale value of said camera).
Hey thanks, this is just my experience, but In the 15 years I have shot timelapse photography I have never had a shutter or sensor go out because of taking too many images. I have broken 5 cameras in my career, but never because of timelapses.
