Danny Carey isn't a talented drummer. He's 5 talented drummers assembled like Voltron. Each one of his limbs is an independently functioning drummer. #Facts

About triggers. A trigger is when you put a sensor on a drum, usually the bass drum, and this sensor then triggers a sample when the drum is hit, like a different bass drum sound, that is played through the speakers. Sometimes it plays both the sample and the original sound for a cool mix, sometimes just the sample. It's often used in very fast metal when the bass drum-hits are fast but weak, just to get that steady hard hitting sound.
Danny here is just using straight up some samplepads, the same thing that's on electronic drumkits. Good to have when you want to incorporate sounds that is hard to replicate with a drumkit.

    • @camangoo
      @camangoo 4 роки тому +22

They're not the same as an electronic kit. He has about 6 Mandala pads which are a standalone pad which provides far more flexibility than a normal electric kit pad. He also has a Korg WaveDrum which again is a very adaptable stand alone pad.

Does not matter what someone is doing, when you see someone so in tune with what they are doing like this it is a beauty to behold. It looks like "he is not there", he is just the notes/sounds he wants to make and his body just auto pilots to make it, stunning.

    • @heatherennis3498
      @heatherennis3498 4 роки тому +2

There's auto-pilot, where everything is pre-programmed, then there's muscle memory, which is from constant practice but has flexibility. Danny has the second - he has been doing this for so long, he can adapt instantly and yet still be the solid foundation which lifts up the rest of the band. As a singer and guitarist, I say this with absolute sincerity - the drummer is the core of the group, and the group lives and dies on the strength of the drummer.

@@senorsavage8702 all you gotta do is tap the beat with your hand and listen to the phrases. Doesn't take any theory understanding or special talent. As long as you can count 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 and rewind where you are confused you can do it too. The guitar and drum were obviously written off the bass line that has a descending riff made of two phrases that are both counted at 7 and accented pretty clearly when the drums and the guitar introduce themselves. It repeats 4 times. The 5th time they want to transition into the verse so they raised the notes, put the accents in a different spot and cut 2 beats instead of copy pasting like a pop track. Traditionally in metal it is very common to cut or add a beat to create a transition, it makes it feel like the next movement wasn't just tacked on but rather built to. There is no "knowing" time signatures, you either can hear a beat or you have simply been mind controlled by all the radio songs. People without any training can easily listen to a new song and tell you what signature an instrument is in when the phrases repeat like these songs.

His Jersey says It. The main riff is in 33/8 and that little variation(~ 3:56) can be counted as 25/8, then it returns to 33/8. Before the B section of the song, the riff after the variation (starting at 5:11, right when he says "one word") actually goes as two bars of 7/4, "chopping off" the last 5 eigth notes from the original 33/8 to make room for the 4/4 that is felt during the break.
Those time signatures can be counted in many ways though, as long as they add up. What matters is the feel, and we only write time signatures as guidance. For a riff that repeats many times, you tipically wouldn't find a constantly changing time signature of 14/8 and 19/8 in a music sheet, that's why I prefer saying It is 33/8 (also because the number happens to be in his shirt, making it a fun coincidence)

    • @lzw3
      @lzw3 4 роки тому +1

Yup, I hear it as 2x7/4 followed by 1x5/8. Adds up to the same and I am more than happy to compromise at 33/8 especially with his jersey.

The song is an exercise in polyrhythms based off of 4 over 3, the general thought is the intro and body is in 33/16 but it’s easier to think of as in recurring bars of 14/8,12/8,7/8. During the chorus there are various transitions to multiple time signatures but that might be the easiest way to count.

You’re the only person to point that part out. I tried on a different reaction channel, but got shot down by everyone in the comments claiming I was jealous. I’m not jealous at all. I can’t be. I don’t put the time in anymore to even attempt anything DC writes. I was just trying to say that it gave me some relief that even the greats can miss a beat. I laugh every time I screw up, so seeing DC also smile when he tripped up is comforting.

@@GhostDrummer Lol, yeah. Danny admitted at some point that the new music are technically the more difficult ones to play, as they aren't totally used to it. He also stated that The Grudge is the most difficult to play endurance-wise. Y'know, the guy is already extremely talented. But when a guy so extremely talented as him also is as humble, to even talking about his difficulties playing some songs, he's even greater.

Time signatures in this song are awesome. Probably one of the most complex Tool songs in terms of time changes.
Here is are measures as I hear them,
    Intro
    4/4 (6+6+4)
    Section A (Bass Only)
    7/4 + 7/4+ 5/8 x 2 measures
Note, Bass starts on the 1/4 before the start of the actual 7/4 measure. This throws of the timing if you don’t count it this way
    3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 2 / + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 2 / +3 + 2
    Section A (All Instruments)
    7/4 + 7/4+ 5/8 x 2 measures
    3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 2 / + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 2 / +3 + 2
Then after 2 measures of bass only the Guitar and Drums enter.
The cymbal choke is the point to start counting the measure. The guitar also plays a note 1/4 before the cymbal choke throwing off the down beat of the measure, same as the bass riff opening the song.
    Section B (Time Change)
After 2 measures with the bass, guitar and drums the time signature of the first measure changes to 17/8 This adds an extra 3 x 8th notes into the measure making it 17/8 opposed to 14/8 or (7/4). This additional 3/8 note plays the highest note in the entire pattern.
The second half of the measure is changed to 4/4 sub divided.
This only lasts for one measure.
    17/8 + 4/4 x 1
    3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 2 / 3 + 3 + 2
    Section A (All instruments)
The original time signature is returned for 1 measure until Vocals enter
    7/4 + 7/4+ 5/8 x 1 measure
    3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 2 / + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 2 / +3 + 2
    Section A (All Instruments + Vocals )
Vocals join and the original measure is repeated 7 times.
    7/4 + 7/4+ 5/8 x 7 measures
    3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 2 / + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 2 / +3 + 2
    Section B (Time Change)
    17/8 + 4/4 x 1
    3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 2 / 3 + 3 + 2
    Section C (Time Change)
    7/4 + 6/4 x 1 measure
    3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 2 / 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 /
    Section D (Instrumental Big Riff)
    4/4
Instrumental big riff is straight time measure, but still feels odd in the drum fills?? - WTF dudes!!.
    Section A (Bass Only)
    7/4 + 7/4+ 5/8 x 1 measure
    Section A (Drums and Guitar)
    Snare roll and guitar enter
    7/4 + 7/4+ 5/8 x 1 measure
    Section A (Vocals Enter)
    7/4 + 7/4+ 5/8 x 8 measures
    Section B Time change
    17/8 + 4/4 x 1 measure
    Section C (Time Change)
    7/4 + 6/4 x 1 measure
    Section D (Instrumental Big Riff)
4/4 x didn’t count the measures on this.
Instrumental big riff is straight time measure
This instrumental continues in 4/4 with Danny’s awesome pattern moving round the whole kit!! - Damn he’s a beast y’all!!
    Section E (Adam Chugging Riff)
This returns to the original pattern which is
    7/4 + 7/4 + 5/8 x measure
Then bass and drums enter. This riff is disgustingly heavy!!
    Section A (Vocals Enter)
This keeps the original pattern of
    7/4 + 7/4+ 5/8 x 2 measures
    Section B
    17/8 + 4/4 x 1
    7/4 x 1
    Ends on
Section D (Instrumental Big Riff) -
    Finished in 4/4.
    What a FUCKING MASTERPIECE LADS!!

Enjoying these reactions Pastor Rob- I’m a huge Tool fan, despite not agreeing fully with their lyrics. That said, I think there is still some good content in them. Pneuma reminds me of neo-gnosticism-the idea that the physical world is evil, but the spirit world is good, and salvation is found by exiting the physical world. I actually believed this unknowingly as an evangelical until getting into NT Wright’s work. While Wright is controversial on many things, I think what he has to say about the physical world being ontologically good, yet compromised by sin, is a major doctrinal distinctive of Christianity that has been lost.

A trigger is commonly used on the bass kick more often than not. It's to help the sound stay consistent. So when playing fast it is basically insurance every hit will be at max volume and impact.
The electronic drum is called a Mandala Drum. You can program sounds into it and depending where on the pad you hit you create different sounds at different pitches and pretty much on and on.
